    Great video! I have just ordered my first gopro to record a forthcoming road trip from uk to drive through some famous alpine passes in switzerland including the Furka Pass, then through to the B500 Black Forest road in Germany. I will fit my camera to the front screen so will experiment with linear or wide and your other suggested settings before the trip. I will time lapse the long stretches of motorways but record all the mountain roads in real time but hear that these cameras have a tendency to overheat. What post edit app would you suggest i use on my Mac?

    • @motoringmatt
      @motoringmatt  ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on your set of editing skills. Davinci Resolve is an epic tool for post-production, but sometimes I even use such a simple app as an iMovie. If you need just to trim/cut clips and put together a video, it may be perfect, since it is very easy to use.

    Good tips thanks. I wish they would give an option to turn off the panning. As we race rally so without stabilisation, the footage is very rough.

    • @motoringmatt
      @motoringmatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point! Yeah, perhaps rally or rallycross is a different case. It also very depends on the mount. Some mounts are rubbish and vibrate like crazy, but there are some expensive ones that are solid as a rock :)

    Thanks Matt for the useful tips you shared.
    Most of your videos are on smooth roads. Now, if I drive on rough roads / offroads, should I still set Image Stabilisation OFF ? I user Hero 9, where there are 4 options - Off, On, High and Boost.

    • @motoringmatt
      @motoringmatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd suggest to keep it On in this case. Its a pity that it still keeps panning while the stabilizer is turned On. I wish GoPro could done a setting specificly for motorsport :) maybe its a matter of time 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Which mount would you recommend on a rally car. It has to be fixed on the rollbar according to FIA (I think).

    • @motoringmatt
      @motoringmatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For rally driving perhaps the best mount is the one that mounts on the cage. However, I would suggest to leave the stabilization ON, because severe vibration can make the footage unwatchable. Its a pity GoPro don't offer a stabilizer that would stabilize the vibration, but not pan in corners :)

  • @ShochikubaiMiroku
    @ShochikubaiMiroku 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Matt, do you think a Gopro works well without stabilization and some hi frequencies due to the engine (gopro rigid mounted on the rollcage)? Actually I try two different smartphone and the result is horrible.

    • @motoringmatt
      @motoringmatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. Thanks for the question. In my opinion, if the camera is mounted securely, there shouldn't be any issues with the quality.
      Personally, I always use GoPro without a stabilizer for onboard videos. However, once I experienced bad footage even though the camera looked to be secured properly. It turned out, the road surface was too bumpy (or imperfect) and that affected the final result.
      To sum up, I can't really tell a thing or two about the smartphone camera performance, but an action camera with the stabilizer turned off should be good enough on the track.

    • @motoringmatt
      @motoringmatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, I forgot to mention this thing: the major difference between an action camera and a smartphone is the fact, that action cameras don't have a focusing system. GoPro, for instance, has everything in focus from 70mm to infinity. In this particular situation smartphones may be too busy trying to get an image in focus. If it's possible - you can try to set the manual focus to infinity (or 20-30 meters) and then try to turn the image stabilizer OFF. But take note: the camera should be secured VERY firmly.

    • @ShochikubaiMiroku
      @ShochikubaiMiroku 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@motoringmatt thank for the reply, I use my phone with autofocus and stabilization turned off, but the image flicker a lot with the engine vibrations

  • @itzfreakinjamie
    @itzfreakinjamie ปีที่แล้ว

    So I do like how with stabilization off it keeps the screen locked in without panning left and right but with the camera mounted to the passenger seat and the car being low, the footage is extremely shaky. Any way to stop this? I wouldn't think so

    • @motoringmatt
      @motoringmatt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest looking for ways to tighten the camera securely. Seat is never an option, as it moves a lot during cornering or braking. I would suggest to mount it on side windows, or, ultimately, if you don't need showing the steering wheel, mounting it directly onto the windscreen from the inside. But then you'd be happy to switch the settings to wider angle (FOV).

    • @itzfreakinjamie
      @itzfreakinjamie ปีที่แล้ว

      @Motoring Matt so just from rearing this and not yet testing, I can already tell this change from the seat mount is already sounding better. As you mentioned the seat moving a lot and how much it actually vibrates. Thank you I will try other placement.

    Can I use a smart phone to apply the same method?

    • @motoringmatt
      @motoringmatt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps yes. Never thought of this, actually. Phones could record good videos, but you should try to do it to see if it does the job for the onboard videos. I think you should lock the focus because it may have a hard time focusing due to vibrations. I think it will be too difficult to secure the phone firmly.
