      I need to remake the video. No sooner did we make it than did the GoPro 9 come out. *And now the 10. And there's some really cool features in ProTune that would take these basic settings to the next level. New video on the "to do" list once the racing season winds down.

    Very helpful, I just got back from a trackday and was annoyed with my footage as it panned back and force due to the g-forces. I think this might be due to the Linear+Horizon Leveling setting but what do you think? This is on a Hero9. My settings were: 1080p/60, linear+horizon leveling, hypersmooth ON, boost OFF. Trying to figure out if the weird panning effect comes from horizon leveling or hypersmooth.

    • @FlyingLapMedia
      @FlyingLapMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending which version of the GoPro you have, be sure to check out your Hypersmooth settings. It's a very subjective setting and some will prefer the natural shake or authenticity, whereas some prefer the image stabilized via the camera software. GoPro's own demo shows how it works. th-cam.com/video/SFVYB3ylHnk/w-d-xo.html - hope that helps!

    • @FlyingLapMedia
      @FlyingLapMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The vintage stuff can get pretty loud - so you'll definitely want to experiment with both wind and engine note. We have ZERO affiliation with any product, but look on Amazon for a GoPro "Wind Slayer." Again, zero affiliation or promotion. But we've heard people having very good results with these with open wheel or open cockpit vehicles. The sound and wind is muffled in a small way to give you a pleasing result when watching.

    Thank you for the video, this is awesome information, if you don't mind I do have a couple of questions, I use a GoPro 10 for rally racing and the camera is mounted on the roll cage between the seats facing the windshield, I have seen many videos where they recommend not to turn on the Hyper Smooth feature so that the camera view doesn't pan from left to right as if the camera mount was loose, you can actually see that on Ken Block's onboard videos where the camera seems to move left to right and right to left on every corner. Also with the Hero 10, we lost the ability to set the Spot Meter on the menu permanently and we have to set it by doing a long press on the back screen but every time the camera restarts or powers down and back up the Spot Meter needs to be set again which is very annoying in the middle of a rally, is there a way to set it like we used to do on the Hero 3, 3+ and 4?

    • @FlyingLapMedia
      @FlyingLapMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regrettably, you share the same frustrations we do. Strangely, GoPro removed the ProTune settings from the mobile app. The only way to access it now is in the camera itself. There are varying ideas as to why they did this, but the consensus seems to be that they did so in order to sell their remote control. It's crazy making.

    • @tonous83
      @tonous83 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep... and that's why I am gona stick with GP Session 5 as long as possible. Stabilization is just right, and Spot meter still on. GoPro needs to make some settings for motorsport in their new cameras/firmwares. DJI Action 3 is bad aswell, same moving picture with g-forces. And on top off that you cannot lock exposure.

    I just bought a GOPRO 8 black wich I intent to use on karting and on my cars, it will be used mostly under sunny conditions.
    First thx, your video was very good and informative, do you recommend the use of any filter on the GP8 under sunny conditions?

    • @FlyingLapMedia
      @FlyingLapMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can see in the clips, even in this video - one of them has an ND filter. We tried the ones by PolarPro. In our experience they really only become useful if you're going to go into fully manual settings.. The GoPro is amazing at compensating with software to changing lighting conditions. So unless you're going to disable all of that entirely and manually set everything, we might suggest you steer away. Reason being, a race track is often dynamic in lighting. You might have one section of the track where it's shaded and one where it's bright and sunny. Depending on what you're ultimately doing w. the footage after the fact, you may want the camera to adjust itself throughout, so you have a decent image at every turn on the track. Just the same, some who are using the footage to edit into other content may prefer the exposure to stay EXACTLY where it is, regardless of some sections of the track being shaded. Not to babble, but best answer might be asking yourself "what do you want to do with the footage after you record it." - if it's simply watch and learn to go faster, leave it on auto. If you want to get into more high production editing, considering using filters and manual controls. Hope that helps!

      If you're just looking for decent video, you might be best to leave it on auto. As you race under the lights, at a certain point, the footage will get very noisy. We usually try to make the ISO max no more than 1600. Just to avoid tons of noise in the image. What are you doing with the footage, exactly? Just general highlight stuff? Editing for social media? Unless you are really going to lean into it in editing, auto will probably work quite well in changing conditions.

    • @FlyingLapMedia
      @FlyingLapMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Subjective, but in our experience - anything more than 800 ISO creates more noise than we typically like in our results. Most of our footage gets used in some bigger capacity or edit, so the less work we have to do in post to composite it with other content... the better.
      But as always, mileage will vary. If you find the higher ISO and settings more to your taste, that's the way to go!

      @@thecorporategypsy Experimenting is the only way. We shoot a lot of closed roof motorsports. So there's a BIG contrast between the inside light, and outside environment. But if you're shooting a desert scenario, it's very likely you'll have window nets instead of plexiglass. So you might have a lot more similarity between inside light, and outside light. The best way is to consider pairing the GoPro to your phone and getting a flavor for how the image looks once you mount it in place. Then using the ProTune settings to make and fine adjustments.

    • @FlyingLapMedia
      @FlyingLapMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The frame rate is a very subjecting thing. If you're shooting the footage just to review and rewatch for learning purposes... then 60FPS is your friend. If you're editing the footage after the fact and trying to match up with other cameras, chances are 24 FPS or 30FPS / 29.97 is going to be the preferred way to do it. My biggest setback is just not understanding the settings I should be using due to a lack of understanding of camera settings. I feel like some say (for all cameras) to have a high FPS, whereas others say low. I use my camera for dirt track racing so the best quality is of course what I am looking for.

      @FlyingLapMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@teamtaterracing-ttr9857 If you're shooting the footage to simply evaluate and learn from your driving, I would recommend 30 or even 60 FPS. If you're shooting it to edit, or combine with other footage use the same frame rate you're using on those other cameras. We for example shoot 24 FPS in our client work, so we set the GoPros to the same frame rate when mounting them in the cars. If you're shooting just to improve your driving, the higher the frame rate, the more "clear" the footage will look to your naked eye.

For client work and shooting for use in sizzle edits, we try to make the ISO no more than 800. Anything more than that and the footage becomes really messy. That said, if you're shooting just for personal viewership or evaluating your racing, there's no reason to limit it. Set it to auto and the GoPro should go as high as it needs to expose the image.

      The stuff we shoot is pretty stiffly sprung. GT3 cars, primarily. So there's not a lot of body roll in the image. But you'd definitely want to try in your particular car, depending on how you want it to look. In a different video, we actually used the panning of the 360 camera as a stylistic thing, which was fun. th-cam.com/video/3NniIUD9qTA/w-d-xo.html. - might be worth a watch if you're actually WANTING the pan and scan vibe. You get lots of panning with any stabilizaton. However, the image can be pretty bouncy without it turned on. You have to see wht works for you. In car, on a glass smooth highway it's not a problem. If there are any kind of bumps on the road, you will notice it. Your setting depends entirely on what you want to do with the footage. I set it to the minimum stabilization to reduce panning.

      Hi Jeff, thanks for the comment. This is going to sound snarky, and I truly don't mean it to - but consider upgrading. The image quality on the 7 and the 8 is leaps and bounds better than the 6. And GoPro offers a pretty legit $100 coupon if you trade in any old camera. gopro.com/en/us/shop/tradeup - I realize it's money out, but I can truly tell you the image and the color of the 7 or 8 betters even some of the pro gear we have. It's probably the single best thing setting the cameras apart from other action sport cams.
      As for the best settings for the 6, I would start with these:
      • 4K60 / Wide Field of View
      • Shutter Speed - Auto
      • Sharpness - Medium
      • Exposure -0.5

    Just got a GoPro 9 , how do I stop it looking like it's moving around on corners? I wish my old hero 2 never died lol

      How are you mounting it? What are you ultimately aiming to do with the end footage? Just look at it with your friends? Edit it for something else? Happy to try and help.

      @@ponyboy1st So what's happened is GoPro has adjusted the camera firmware to make ProTune only available in the camera itself. So to get to ProTune you'll have to swipe DOWN in the profile editing screen until you get to the ProTune settings. So the options are there. But just no longer accessible in the phone app. Really stinks they did that.

    Does this work for the hero 9 black?

    • @FlyingLapMedia
      @FlyingLapMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does, yes. However since the time of recording this video - GoPro has taken the "ProTune" settings off the phone. Now they're only on the camera itself. So in the picture profile, you have to scroll DOWN (manually using your finger) to access them. The settings are the same, but the method in accessing them is now slightly different. Hope that helps.

    Hypersmooth should be set off because then your camera will counteract any car movement and it doesnt translate well when you want to show the dynamics of driving like skidding or even drifting.

      @@FlyingLapMedia I make videos for motovlog and also residential or outdoor, I want a result that is not too dark when I see objects around,
      that's why I set it to 1600 and the result is white spots what do I have to do and sorry for asking too many questions what's the difference between my auto white balance settings and 5500 does it have any effect on motovlog recording? I spend about 20-30 minutes motovlog
      I usually do the recording in the morning, afternoon or evening

      Tough to really give an educated suggestion without seeing the footage. Do you have any sample footage you can link to? It's very likely the dots you see are noise. And if your cockpit or lighting is indeed that dark, you may need to set the ISO higher, or even change the EV settings (Exposure settings). Posting your sample footage somewhere will help us, help you.

      I just got input and experimented
      I record 2.4k/60fps
      and I export to 1080 /60 fps
      the results are quite good but after i upload it to youtube why the results always break after I do the motovlog movement
      but not if I do a slow move
      video bit rate details 60,000 kbps
      I exported it to 1080/60 fps and I equalized the value to 60,000 kpbs but it still broke
      what should I do what value should I fulfill so that the movement of the video at high speed is also good like the original video??

      @@ronalinvi_property You'd have to turn the video to unlisted. Right now it's private, and it won't allow us to see it.
