If your jack stands are too short, try making cribbing blocks like the Fire Dept uses. Take something like 2X6's, wide enough for the jackstands to sit on, and fasten them together in a stair step pattern. Bonus points for doing a pair at the same time so that you turn 1 upside down and the pair slides together for compact (as it were) storage.
