How does the resume check? Is that like the reference check, or do they contact the employer again? It is weird how they already call your supervisor without any offer and make you look bad.

My fingerprints were done on Wednesday and came back the next day. I was told that my background was submitted I was offered a non Risk level ? Just so nervous 😟 I hate background check.
What if you forget to include a 2nd job such as uber, doordash , UPS and etc on your resume but you list it on your e-quip. You explain to the investigator that you wanted to keep your resume focused on professional experience.
Good deal! Also, I have a question. I just recently received a TJO and completed my background. I have on my resume I have been an Independent Contractor. But on the background I had to list every job in detail with dates. It looks like I am a "job hopper" but actually was working contract to take care of my father the last few years. I am concerned it's taking away my credibility and will not pass. Any thoughts? Going crazy waiting. Thank you!
@@jillplott4986 job history doesn't have an impact on background investigations. Just need resume and eqip to match. As long as you weren't fired from any job you should be fine.
Thank you. My concern is I just have on my resume "Independent Contractor". I don't have all the jobs I had in my resume because it will junk it up. But on the background I listed all of them. So it's not going to match my resume. I'm a very qualified candidate. Just life happens sometimes but you can't explain that on the form. I dunno. I actually was let go on one because it wasn't a good match. What happens if I was. It was only a month. Nervous wreck! I'll keep you posted. Thanks.
I received a TJO for a Government Information Specialist. I was truthful on the OF 306 and I completed the NBIS background check and Fingerprinting. They just rescinded the offer without an investigation because they found an arrest record. The arrest happened almost a year ago and the charges were dismissed and the judge ordered an expedited expungement. Although I assumed it would not be an issue, I was honest. Can't HR take back the rescindment of the offer based on the correct information? They said the decision was made based on 5 CFR.731. I feel this should not have been an issue since there should never have been an arrest record due to the expungement. My attorney said, that he can get the order but that expungements come from the State police and they are backlogged so that's why it is still on my record. What can I do to clear this matter up and get the job back?
You'll just have to discuss with that HR office. Usually a single offense would have to be severe for it to be automatically disqualifying. Was there anything else that could have been in your history that wasn't disclosed?
Awesome video! Thank you! For the employment check, you say that they confirm dates of employment and job title, typically by mail for lower level clearances. I have three questions: 1. I had four different titles at the same company over the years, I assume I list the most recent title? 2. Do they ask other questions such as eligibility for rehire, reason you left, etc? Or just basic facts such as dates of employment and title? 3. My last supervisor is no longer there. Can/should I list her Manager instead? She knew me well and can also verify. If I list my old managers name, the form may be returned to sender. I will be receiving the FS85 for non-sensitive positions, if that matters.
For the SF 85, what kind of supervisor information do we put on that? Will a representative from the human resource department from my job be good enough? Do I have to put my current boss/lead supervisor's information? My current boss does not know I have a federal job offer. That would be an awkard conversation to have with them if they get notified of this background check first before I tell them the news.
You'll want to check with your HR POC on how to answer. My recommendation is to complete the form with what is asked. Generally you would list your supervisor and the business address and they mail a reference sheet to them.
This video is very informative, thank you for all the information. I wanted to ask a question? I received a TJO from the VA and am completing my background investigation. I have a 4 month gap in my employment history, that was highlighted on my e-quip. I updated my resume to refect this. I did explain on the e-quip in the additional comments section that it was due to me being a full-time caregiver to an ill family member. I keep seeing these messages that there can be no employment gaps though, I'm wondering if this will hinder my employment?
I worked for two employers after leaving active duty for extremely short periods (2 months for one job and 1 month for another job), and decided to not list them on my resume. Should I add these jobs back to my resume before my investigation is started? I left these positions to pursue other opportunities and not because of poor performance or being fired. I just don’t know if I should add them back or not. I don’t want to fail the investigation due to this minor change. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
You would want to add them back to your resume. The investigation will have you list all employers in the last x number years so you will have to list them there. Everything will need to match.
I was recently given a tentative job offer from TSA about 2 weeks ago that I accepted and Ive already submitted my background information to them online. I was hired by the United States Postal Service about a year ago that Im currently still working now. The Post Office did a really thorough background check on me last year before they hired me and of course I passed. How much different is the government background check for TSA than it is with the post office? ......Also, just to let people know, I had a very minor felony conviction 19 years ago that I didnt mention when I applied at the post office and they obviously didnt see it maybe because it was 19 years old?? I didn't mention it either on my TSA background, so I wonder if it will matter to them or if they will even look back that far?
The background check should be similar to the post office. They may dig a little deeper because it's a security type position. If it wasn't within the time frames asked then you wouldn't need to disclose. My recommendation is to always answer the questions as honestly as possible.
I appreciate this question being asked. I have a minor felony (for possession of what is now legal in most states); my record was expunged over 20 years ago. I had some concerns but now it sounds like as long as the offense did not occur in the timeframe of the question, there is no need to disclose.
@@amar01dr correct. There should be a time frame for disclosing. Some items do ask if something ever happened. In those cases you would have to disclose no matter how long ago it was.
@amar01dr You will be good. They are only looking back 5 years or so, and as long as your record is clean during that time frame, you have nothing to worry about. My TSA background check came back good just as my post office background did over a year ago and I didn't disclose that minor felony.....I honestly feel that all businesses including federal jobs are hurting for employees and they've got to relax the rules a bit because if they don't, they won't ever fill many of those positions.
Hi thanks for so much interaction with us here... Quick question. I have been employed with a federal agency as a contractor for 2 years. I did my background check eqip exactly one year ago but I still do not see the clearance in my eopf. I just got a tentative offer for a permanent position it is a moderate risk, suitability/fitness level....... Should I ask about my background and the status.. Is it possible they will have me do it all over... Also does the agency I work for have the final say in deciding upon my background being cleared once they get a report from investigating agency? Hope that want too much lol.. thanks a bunch
You're welcome! It's possible they never uploaded it after it was cleared. Some places do get behind. I'd mention it so they can look into it. If your current level is the same as the permanent position you shouldn't have to redo it. If the new requirement is higher you would though.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 ok . I was thinking that but everyone that did theirs at the same time as me have their own file so I did think deeper into it lol.. but pretty much if I'm still working here then I may not have much to wonder about?? Of course Im just hopeful that I don't get denied or released
Hello, I am currently going through the process of getting my clearance. I was told I am in a limited background status. What does that mean in terms of what you explained in this video? Thank you
You will probably be in the stage where you are cleared to start before the entire investigation is complete. If you start before it's done and fail then you would just be terminated.
It depends on what level of investigation is required. The grade doesn't dictate the level it's the exposure to sensitive material. At the lower levels it is a mailer but the higher levels will have interviews with the applicant and call the references.
Hi there, great videos! Thank you so much! I have questions about unpaid taxes and how to disclose them on EQIP. In 2018 I was audited for my state taxes and owed a small balance. I was on a payment plan and recently paid it all off. Additionally, for 2022 I was self-employed for the first time and did not make enough payments; as a result, I ended up owing for both state and federal. I am currently paying both down and plan to have them paid by the end of this year. Do I need to disclose 2022 as unpaid taxes and the 2017 tax audit? Thank you, also, for the reason of financial hardships, what kind of documentation will I need to provide? Also, in the past 5 years, I had a lot of waitressing jobs that I did not include on my resume. I assume I am required to disclose on EQIP; should I also plan on adding them to an updated resume to hand to HR? Thank you!
You're very welcome! For the taxes you will have to disclose. You'll just follow the format listed on the 306 and eqip for listing federal debts. Since the one year is paid off and you're in a payment plan for the other it should be fine. And you will need to update your resume with all your experience. There can't be any gaps on the eqip and has to match the resume exactly.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 Thank you for answering. One more question for the previous jobs, what if my former supervisor no longer works at the agency? Do I provide my supervisor's up-to-date address? Or do I give someone else's information that can verify my employment with the company?
If there's a job I did not list on the resume because it was 6 months of training, which I ultimately resigned from after not meeting the course standards, is that an issue? However, I listed the job and, I thoroughly explained the reason why I resigned on form 306 and Equip. I also recently received an email notice from PSI-CoE that my "PSIP request requirements are completed." Not sure what that means.
Does EQIP is not call e-App? I have gone through my Fingerprint process couple of weeks ago and waiting on to be released and who knows how long it takes. And the next step would be e-App after fingerprint released. Any thoughts? This is for IRS.

Hi, thank you for the information. I worked for the government a few years ago and just received another tentative offer. I completed some background questions, but have not been asked to get finger printed. Would I need to be finger printed again or do the use the prints they have on file?
I have a question about the past employment part: I've worked at my job for 10 years (so far, since Jan. 2014) , but we went through 3 different owners and a lot of different supervisors. My original supervisor (from Jan 2014) passed away a few yrs ago. I don't have any of my other supervisors contact info from 2015 (when we got the 2nd owners) to 2022 (when this new owner took over). What should I do/write?
That's a good question! You may want to confirm with your HR POC. If the company name has stayed the same I'd think you just put your start date to present and your current supervisor. But definitely confirm with your HR.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 ok. The company name has changed a couple of times. Also, I looked up my name on Experian bc I tried to apply for a credit card and they said I had student loans. It takes months for the investigation to clear. If you signed the provisional work document HR should move forward to the firm offer once all pre-employment requirements are complete.

I have approximately 8 years left on my current Clearance before renewal. Will they still run another background/credit check although I already hold my Clearance? Or will I be able to transfer it?
How much could be the minimum wait time before we send a follow up e-mail to the personnel security specialist. The background check is for low risk level..filled formSF85 and it is 1st Federal job. From past experiences how long could the background check take?
It depends. Low risk can take 2-3 months but many agencies let employees start before it's done with the understanding that if it comes back negative that they would be terminated.
I was sent an email on April 13 saying that someone from U.S. Mint security would be contacting me in 1-2 weeks to initiate the background check... Something about fingerprinting, but no one has contacted me yet! The email also stated to schedule me for a physical. I was sent to take the physical tho and passed. My question is, how long does that process take?
I am currently at this point.....I have a question.....I worked at the agency I have a tentative offer for as a contractor and also hold the clearance required for the position (and did when I was a contractor also). Does this help speed up the security clearance process or does it have to be a new investigation every time? Also, how long does a reinvestigation typically take?
If you have the clearance already they should verify and not have you complete. If it's not current your information should still be in eqip to make it easier. It takes awhile to fully complete but many agencies let you start before as long as everything is submitted.

What if you forget to include a 2nd job such as uber, doordash , UPS and etc on your resume but you list it on your e-quip. You explain to the investigator that you wanted to keep your resume focused on professional experience.
You should get a chance to update your resume when you turn in your eqip. It all has to match to be accepted.
Nice video but the volume is so low I can't hear your content.
Thank you! I'll see what I can do.

What if I had a suspended TS Clearance. Then waited to apply for a new 1? I did not admit to previous suspended clearance.
If it was within the time frame and you didn't disclose it that could be justification to rescind an offer.

For a lower level grade 5. Would the background investigations call a former employer instead of mailing a letter?
I hear you say depending on the level of investigation. What positions require more investigation?
Positions that have a higher level of access to confidential information will have higher levels of investigation. Like IT and HR for examples.

This may get caught during a reference check. If not you'll definitely need to update your resume when you get to the background check. Don't have any advice for this position but you should update your resume for future positions.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 ok thank you for letting me know. The job posting says they do a credit report and a drug screening which I know I’ll pass . I was just concerned my job history may be an issue. I’ll update for resume tho!

@@federalhiringadvice1385 when you advise to update resume, does that mean to go into USA jobs and update the resume that was originally submitted or how exactly do you make the update?
This is great! Just a quick question about the background investigation. I received a FO from an agency and my report date is in less than 2 weeks. The position is for noncritical-sensitive/moderate risk with no security clearance. I have already done eQIP for a Federal Contractor position that I’m about to leave, so I am technically already “on file.” The only thing I’m worried about is my high credit card balances. I’ve never missed a payment and have never been late. Also just got a car yesterday, so my credit score is bound to take a hit pretty quickly. I’m pretty worried about working for a month and being let go because of that possibly disqualifying me. What are your thoughts?
I don't think having debt or a low credit score will effect your investigation. Only if you are delinquent or filing for bankruptcy or something like that would it hurt.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 I appreciate your time and your excellent videos! Thank you so much for your response.
@@RandyOrton07 you're very welcome!
What clearance is for the position u.s probation officer? How thorough is it? I read it’s the SF 86 form. Is that correct?
Sf86 is a higher level clearance than most positions. It's one where you'll have to do an interview as part of the investigation.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 does OPM have the final say to not hire or is it up to my agency?
@@fellowstranger7549 it goes back to the agency. Opm gathers the info and the agency reviews and decides.

What is NBIS and do they check credit
I'm not sure what NBIS is. Usually credit is only check for higher level investigations.

So I recently applied to be a volunteer. I did my fingerprints and then I went in to do my badging. A man came out and asked me a bunch of questions about some a couple misdemeanors I had over ten years ago .After I answered and talked with him for a while, he rescheduled and had me to come back for the badging the next day. So I have my badge now . The same week they called me to interview for an AMSA position I applied for, then a few days after they emailed asking for two references. My question is do I have to got back through the background part ..and if so can they turn me down for a job? The guy who came and talked to me before I did my badging said that he was going to explain so that whoever looked at it in the future should know that I am good now. But I'm scared ..
As a volunteer you should have only had to do fingerprints for the background investigation. As an employee they go a little deeper with eqip. If you just did fingerprints you will have to do more but if you did eqip and everything then you shouldn't have to redo the background investigation.
Thank you for another informative video! I relocated four months ago for the position I applied for. I am staying at a hotel. I don’t know anyone here, so I have no one to put down under Residence History/Person Who Knew You. I indicated that I don’t know the requested information, but I still received a warning/validation error. I honestly have no one to put down - how should I proceed?
For that the person you put down doesn't have to also live there. It could be someone you know anywhere that can confirm you live in the hotel.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 I should have clarified when I said “I don’t know anyone here” that I meant here in the city that I am in, not in the hotel. I thought I needed to list someone who lives in the vicinity. Thank you for your help! Much appreciated!
@@TammiSparks you're welcome!
@@federalhiringadvice1385 Well, although this portion of the e-QIP does state to “list a person who knew you at this address, and who still lives in that area (do not list people for residences completely outside this 3-year period …), I still don’t know anyone in this area. The best I could do would be a relative. So I will take your advice and name someone who lives elsewhere but who can vouch for me.
@@TammiSparks that will work to complete that part of the eqip. If there are issues with that they will ask for someone else later.
Hi, i got a TTJO, filled out all documents online and passed all medical requirements. I have been fingerprinted and just waiting on the background check. It has been two weeks, how long is the usual background process ? My tentative start date is Sept 25. Should i be concerned?
The background check takes months but alot of times you can start after it's been submitted if there aren't any red flags. I'd check with the HR POC. They may just need a reminder.

If your background fails. How long do you have to wait before replying?
This hiring process sucks 😞and it’s stressful
First Advantage background got to the point.
If you're going to fail its usually identified once your fingerprint results come back. They will let you know right away.
Do you have to list your former manager’s name and phone numbers. What if you don’t know it?
For the background investigation you have to fill in every block or OPM won't accept it. If you know the manager's name list it and if you can't remember the number just look up the company number and use that.
How long can a background clearance take.
It just depends on the level of investigation. The lower level of investigations could still take 1-3 months to fully clear.
