  • Well, here we go again... How much did it cost me to build the 2005 Subaru WRX STI's new engine set up. So we rebuilt a set of 2006 Subaru STI Case halves, pistons, rods the whole shebang! To be honest it really was not as much as I had thought it was. Hope the video helps!

    At this point i'm something like 50k (i'm too scared to check) into my 08 sti project including the car. We're talking full suspension, poly bushings, wheels, closed deck block, built/ported heads, rotated, externally gated g30-660, meth injection, full in tank dual pump to injectors fuel system, all supporting mods plus a ton of carbon for the interior and exterior. Besides the money/time i'm pretty sure it's cost me a small piece of soul too. Hoping to crack 450 whp on 93/meth and 500 whp on 110.

      mannnnnn if you’re closed deck get that g30-900 and make some power bro! depending on ur fuel pump/injector size it sounds like your setup can handle way more than what that 660 is capable of

    • @donmerrigan2362
      @donmerrigan2362 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devon5078 iag rates the block for 700-750 bhp is believe. So 600-650 whp. On pump/meth @ 22-23 psi I did 420/405 and on e50/meth @24-25 psi It made 475/467. The tmic was just getting too hot on the dyno so my tuner wasn't comfortable pushing it much further. It's now back on e75 pushing 28-29 psi, getting a fmic, short runner na intake manifold and port methanol injection. Depending on outside temps I'm seeing between 62-65 lbs/min airflow compared to 54-55 lbs/min when it made that 475/467 so low to mid 500s should be no problem. Somewhere down the road I'll be looking into either a g30-770 or g30-900 as I'm pretty much at the limit of what this turbo can do. It does hit 29 psi by 3900 rpms in 4th which is great for the daily driver/back road warrior I wanted though.

    All things considered 🤔
    This isn't exactly a terrible amount of money spent. Reusing good parts saves you money (I acquired about $7k worth of FB/flex parts via a part-out 2 yrs ago which I plan to install over the winter and paid a good but under that $7k too) and getting the bottom end for free saved a bit too.
    I'm looking to pick up 11'+ heads/18'+ halves very soon. Your motor build (if my math was right) was just under 5k....which is making me very happy. That actually fits my budget.
    I'm not going super big rotated probably ever and something like your first FP Black setup would do me just fine.
    Thanks for the breakdowns and the content. I'll have content in the future for my own stuff soon enough.

    Great video. I think its expensive to modify any car. Every car that you want to make power with needs almost everything you mentioned anyway. I guess after doing it you may realise its probably better to do the big build the 1st time. Almost every Subaru owner starts with a bigger stock location and its supporting mods and within a year you're considering a built motor and a big turbo rotated setup.

    Crazy build, and very expensive. I know this car would be a blast to drive in its condition it sits at right now, but the issue I have with builds like this are that they still suffer in performance compared to cars with the same power levels of today. 0-60mph times on this Subaru wont even hit the 3's, and 1/4 mile times are maybe in the 10's, which is not that great for the amount of $$ put into modifying this build, trying to make it faster. For example, if you bought an MK7 R, which used right now you can find in the $20k's, and you add a hybrid turbo upgrade, tune, downpipe, intercooler, and fueling, which would cost you $4000-4500 in total, you are hitting 3-second 0-60's and 10 second 1/4 miles. I know everyone likes specific cars for specific reasons, but to spend this much money trying to make your Subaru fast, but in the end it won't be compared to today's cars, is just not smart, even as a car enthusiast. It's best to keep an older Subaru stock and just enjoy it. If you want to mod a car, get something that's a better platform.

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely not cheap but like you said specific cars. It'll take on hellcats when on E from a dig or a roll. 0-60 times I don't care too much for but also have to keep in mind the Weight and drive train.
      For me it's the simplicity of older cars, less tech, easy to work on, relatively affordable parts. I've looked at golf Rs the past few weeks because I've wanted one and they're all 30-35K right meow

    I got the full ETS kit from intake through IC and exhaust, and with 44, there is VERY little lag right now, even on a base MAP..

      Also, I have my own spreadsheets that I've tracked since owning the car, and how much I've invested since I bought it.
      I would be more than happy to share this out, and for each person would be unique for all the 'little' stuff. I have ever single purchase scanned, and picture proof of what was involved to show.
      But, with receipts.. I have now invested over just shy of $100k in my build with both "Power", and "Looks" with the base car price. Will find out the HP numbers on the Dyno next week after MONTHS of waiting! But, it should be somewhere in the realm of 450-470 HP on E85, and the tuner says will be safe.
      If you're doing this, just the biggest thing I can/will ever say, PLEASE just build things right. The base EJ257 is stable, just do your build right, and understand it ain't going to be cheap.

    Subaru's just seem like such a massive overhaul to make any real power.. Meanwhile Ive been running 650whp for about 6 years(80K miles) on my CSS K24 with just upgraded rods, pistons and valvetrain.. Motor build cost me maybe $3K? No machine work needed, no fabrication, no nothing.. K's are monsters.

      Those K24s hold some nice power 🔥 subarus are definitely not cheap to make power with but something about em that we love

      @@Smeedia For sure.. Subbies are really unique cars and Im sure they are rewarding to build and get right.. Me personally, My wife would kill me if I bought a subaru and modded it lol... Our bank account would drain faster than Usain Bolt running the 100m.. I guess sponsored builds really help.. Sadly just dont have the time to do the YT grind. I chose Honda's for their reliability, ease of modding, power they hold and far cheaper price points for parts. Its just amazing I can beat a 2.4 liter for 6 years with this much power and never have one issue.. Just stuck with my maintenance and had her retuned once a year. Thats it.

    Sheesh, this is why my bugeye is getting the rally car treatment. Still gunna be ~450whp but it'll be reliable and I can rip it on dirt/gravel and snow and street. So it'll be just expensive but hopefully won't explode on me as often lmao
