@Soft Tofu No, that's not with me. I spent 1 year 5 months & 13 days without any entertainment source cause i don't afford it and leave alone in a house with my hamster. Doing only exercise and study on how to die without pain but i don't how I'm alive until now
all depends on the planning going in with a checkered t-shirt and boom you can make a chess set out of cloth. You could make figurines out of the pyjamas if you rip it into streaks and shapes. Chess gives you enough playing time. or other stuff. You could probably somehow make a deck of cards or other games out of it. read up on enough games you could do when bored. Imagination excersies and stuff like that. Even if they sound stupid those are better than nothing. but in the end... And with both people having been together for long enough beforehand they know how to treat each other. Good communication. Strong relationships will survive this no doubt and yeah... if they are able to do it then theyd come out stronger than before.
this is build so they would be fail, the professor will send someone/something which will somehow hit their soft spot and trigger the conflict, yeah if they could trough all of that they might be best couple, but the whole point of this is that to make them realize that the price is not that important like the man realized, so in the end losing is the actual winning here.

Interesting how they were able to tolerate each other when it was just them, albeit being bored. But as soon as external factors came to play, that's when problems really started piling up: the bug, the crayon, the gun, the woman who purposely sabotaged the couple's trust. Perhaps these factors were amplified due to isolation, but if they had some discipline/goals, it would've been a lot easier. For $5 million, people can go through worse. So basically the professor pretty much wanted to fuck with them with the "treats", which I guess was part of the experiment.
It is just 50 days. Imagine what people go through when sentenced for life till death. What will be their motivation to live through every day. Hence one can easily get through 50 days
@@friendsgroup470 Keep in mind that this is an experiment with a suspiciously high reward for seemingly little effort. It doesn't say in this recap, but I can imagine that the professor carefully selected each contestants and researched them beforehand, ensuring that the test won't be a walk in a park. Note the treats that were given to them and the videos that were prepared. It's like the professor dangled a carrot in front of them. If they gave in to temptation due to boredom, then the "treats" were designed to mess with them, in my opinion.

Damn only 50 days? We have a Japanese dude that did this solo for 15 months and his food wasn't free from the wall, he had to acquire his own food from inside the room with only magazine sweepstakes challenges. Look him up, he's called Tomoaki Hamatsu, nickname Nasubi. It's insane what they put this man through, compared to 50 days for 5 million Nasubi would have stomped that challenge.
Not impressed with that since he is clearly an introvert individual. You have to take that into account. This sort of challenges are difficult for people who are highly social, introvert have an easier time with this sort of challenges
@@NT-lq3lq You should look him up before the challange, he was really extroverted and even wanted to become a famous comedian, which is quite an extroverted public job. However, the challange ended up messing with his mentality so badly, that he still struggles with it till this day.
I like how the movie subverts your expectations. Between the two, it’s expected that Mike will be the “weak link” in this room and that Kate is the sensible gardener of the relationship. Even Kate kind of dismisses Mike’ and his feelings as those of a spoiled rich boy. However, after the initial difficulties, he was right and in full control of himself in this space, and the movie did a great job of revealing how he is actually the gardener who has been struggling to care for Kate, a woman who completely dismisses his efforts and feelings. He was totally right about taking advantage of the treats. No matter the cost, it’s better to walk out with 4.9 mill than to go crazy and lose it all. Even if you could get through 50 days with no treats, if it’s going to be detrimental to your mental stability, it’s not worth it. Kate refuses to accept that Mike may need a little more stimulation than she does, which is foolish for a game where you’re supposed to be acting like a team. Even if she is the more responsible one, there’s a line between giving advice and taking control. Mike can have a crayon if he wants, he can draw you how he wants. How dare she get so angry just because he’s not a realist (As if she didn’t know that before?) Kates greatest flaw is her inability to process her emotions and instead store resentment. I honestly think she wanted him to have a breakdown. Why else would she even bother giving him the “candy” knowing his past?. She clearly sees Mike as a tool more than a person. Something to extend herself. Just because he’s rich doesn’t mean he hasn’t suffered. I could never imagine speaking the way she does to someone who not only has gone through their own trauma, but has also poured themselves into loving and taking care of you. It’s almost like she tries to use guilt and weaponized helplessness to keep him by her side. Also, even from a fully rational perspective, the ending shows she’s kind of just an idiot. You know there is a gun in this room, therefore you should be avoiding violence at all costs, and you should be aware that the game master is not going to play fair. How she still can even believe that what Simone wrote on the wall ( with a crayon the researchers must have given her) is stupid. Even if he did cheat, just wait a week? And even if he did cheat, that doesn’t justify pushing him into a wall. I’m glad Mike realized the abuse he was going through because even a stranger, after causing bodily harm ( and perhaps a concussion) would’ve shown enough concern to seek help. I would’ve understood treating the wound and waiting a few hours to see if he was lucid or if there was any lingering damage, but forcing someone to possibly bleed out for a wound you’ve caused them? What a fantastic metaphor for their entire relationship. Glad they didn’t get back together.
Gotta say, that room would be way more of a red shade if I was to be in there, I kind of hate humans. And ofc I am a human, I hate myself the most. That would be my blood.

This challenge was easier too because yes it was half the length, but also they weren't subjected to arguably a form of torture of perpetual bright lights and not to mention there wasn't a one week power outage. Just proves how holywood needs to write mentally deranged characters to make an interesting story lol

I disagree, when you first get together with someone you are learning and growing with them, you are learning their flaws and their strengths, as you spend more time with the person, you both grow and learn and change into a different person, someone who is super compatible with the other based on time, experience and problem solving throughout the time you have been with that person. This was a couple who had been together for a couple of years tops.
This wouldn’t in no way determine that the most compatible people will still get annoyed or mad at their partner you are growing and adjusting with that person this wouldn’t show anything but how you to could possibly annoy or kill each other
Considering it gives you the time spent and the lights change, it's not as hard as it could be. Vsauce spent 3 days in a white room, lights always on, no clock, and he lost track of time very fast.
3 days compared to 50, and I just saw a tweet asking a similar question, only the time and prize money was doubled to $10 million might seem super easy at first, but boredom can very quickly set in and even mental deterioration as well.
honestly i dont know why this even seems difficult at all. 50 days is pretty easy in my opinion as long as you are aware what you are in for and you have proper discipline. for me i would make sure we have some sort of routine that we can improve on everyday like pushups situps running handstands etc. i would try to talk to the other person about stories in life for every single year of our lives for each day. then maybe some facts that we know. when the gun appears i would immediately make an activity out of it like trying to shoot a tiny object on the other side of the room. maybe they reload the gun each day. that would be another activity. there are just so many things you can do that are spontaneous and routine that could almost guarantee you can hold out 50 days maybe even more in my opinion.
Yeah im confused. it doesn't even seem like they had to fast or anything. they also get water. im fairly sure this is a lot easier for some people over others but it really doesn't seem that difficult.

I think the point is it might be more difficult than you think. It's not just spending 50 days with someone, it's spending 50 days in a pretty much empty room. The space might seem like a benefit, but it might actually not help or make things worse. The most logical course is to simply sleep it off and set proper schedules and boundaries. But who knows what you'll feel like after even a week, even the smallest common noises the other person makes could drive you mad, until you have an outburst, which makes them upset, which creates on going tension that can build up to a breaking point. For 5 million I'd find a way to stick it out, but the other person would be the real worry, because if they're going mad, you not going mad might make them even madder and take it out on you.

I’m not immune to boredom. But, I’m pretty capable of entertaining myself with my own thoughts. It’s less than 2 months. I could blow through the first couple weeks just coming up with different detailed plans for what I might do with the money.

I'm not saying it would be easy, but if it means i never have to work again then bring it on😅 I can sleep a lot if i want to, and i can entertain myself for a while with my imagination or the tons of songs and stories i have in my memory. The only issue is that i don't trust most any other person i'd have to go in the room with to not f up😂 So i guess it still wouldn't work.
As someone who has battled severe depression where I haven’t left my house for months at a time, I really do wish this was real. Then I could be rich and not feel so guilty of being useless

No doubt the professor picks specific people out so he can mess with them to see the results. There's most likely a rule that you can't tell anyone what goes on in the room to keep the experiment a secret otherwise people would figure it out pretty quickly.
Maybe it's an evolutionary selection experiment. Take in troubled people, mess with them, those with the good resilience, choices and innate preconditions thrive, others get into legal trouble, or even die.
You're right. Games like DnD will be blast here. Exchanging folk tales and stories would also be a blast. Trust is a major factor here as other people/things are introduced into the room.
My wife and I would nail this (we endured something similar during the height of the pandemic) without even bating an eye. Exercise, mental discipline and deep meaningful conversations would make 50 days go by like it's nothing

the biggest problem is to keep your mind straight and not falling into despair. trust me, i´ve seen many peoply cant coping with it and just a few, which does.
Absolutely couldn't do this on my own, but could easily do this with any one of my good friends. Conversation and sleep and a bit of exercise is about all I need, I can talk for hours with my friends no problem. Not to say it'd be easy, the food would definitely get to me because I like nice food, and the lack of sunlight and fresh air would be the worst, but for that amount of money it wouldn't even be a question. 50 days of determination and focus to do literally anything I could imagine for the rest of my life? Easy
@@truzle6133 yes, it would. Most people work for 45-50 years, if you were earning the average salary of 40k, you only earn 2 million pre tax in your entire lifetime. Most people survive on that, though not comfortably. I would have that money instantly so I could set my life up to be a lot more sustainable, and obviously could work if I needed to top it up at any stage. Not to mention the dollar is worth more than the euro right now so I'd actually have a bit more than 5 mill :)
I think the same too... I'm not someone who's very problematic and I don't get all fcked up when I get depressed because of someone or something..I mean you could call me a chill person. And a company of someone trustworthy would be an amazing opportunity of building up even a closer relationship with that person and getting to know them more. All I need is good food and some music in there hehe.
@@nuknukisdead yeah allowed but many people have neither. In the US the hospital tv costs money to turn on. Not everyone gets visitors or it's much more difficult like immuno-compromised or psychiatric hospital or even covid during its peak. During peak covid no visitors were allowed at all.
I'm in a happy, wholesome marriage but HARD NO to this, we'd go nuts. I'd probably "spend" all the money while we're in that awful room (I love treats) and Al would leave, fed up with my spending spree 😂

You don't even need that strong of an relationship. As long as both are just reasonably smart people. I mean 5M is hell of an motivator. As long as relationship is not totally dysfunctional/abusive, I don't really see any problem.
dont misunderestimate the power of "bland white facades" ... you needs stuff to keep you occupied. its all about the clothes you wear in the beginning. Get stuff you can use for something else once inside. Board games or something hell idk

I feel like this challenge would be pretty easy if you went in with a halfway decent plan. The trick is just knowing when to get away from each other using the bathroom as a quiet place to be alone. Obviously the room is designed to fuck with your relationship so keeping that in mind is important
Easiest money in the world. It's under two months. You get enough food. You can catch up on sleep. You can stretch, do calisthenics. Meditate, daydream. Play verbal games. You can play chess in your mind. You can share stories. Visualize.
This is basically sensory deprivation and it is extremely hard even tho it looks easy. Vsauce Michael made an episode about it where he explains everything even the white interrior has a reason. It's very hard and a torture for a human being for even a shorter than 50 days i guess.
That's the main point. The only form of stimulation is the other person. So it tests how the people can keep each other adequately stimulated or not without outside influences. It just turns out that experiencing those outside influences together is a big part of being social.
Another person being present helps aid is sensory deprivation. It’s only a form of torture when they are separated by SOCIAL activities. 50 days is nothing for a normal person being with someone they like.
50 days is just about enough time to make up your mind on what to invest the money into and how to make the most out of it. They could have just fired the gun for fun and to make it impossible to use it in a bad way later on. They could have given the bug poop to eat. The crayon and candy could have been used to create a game like chess. Dreams offer plenty of entertainment. Solitary confinement would be hard but two people. eh. Emotionally stable mature people wouldn't have a problem but then again many people are emotionally unstable and undisciplined and have not experienced significant difficulties in life and therefore easily get out of control over minor non issues
I'm convinced the scientists placed the bug there on purpose. To torture his girlfriend by getting him to threaten to open the door, all to get back at her for setting those early alarms :( Hell is other people etc.
When I was in the U.S Army, I spent 15 months deployed to a dusty remote location in Afghanistan followed by a 12 month deployment to Iraq. So this 50 days challenge in an empty room would be a vacation for me compared to my deployments.
These movies always portray the absolute extroverts who would actually be bothered by any of this. I can go and I already went 50 days without almost speaking and without any entertainment whatsoever. Ive had depression phases where I was sleeping maybe 15 hours a day and didnt speak with anyone. And it was insanely easy. I dont get bothered by almost anything. Putting me there for 365days for 20mil would be the easiest 20mil ever made in the history of man kind..
Yeah society in general tends to make judgments based on being social. So everyone must be in a relationship, must have lots of friends, etc, or else you'll be regarded as unhappy/lonely/weird. This paints the minority of people who are introverts/hermits in an unfavourable light, when in fact that is how they enjoy life. PS I wish you all the best with coping with dealing with depression
@Jorge Garibay I told you Ive done it.. I had depression episodes where I didnt leave my room or talk to anyone for weeks. Even now at work (male nurse) I rarely speak and when somebody gives me shit I never get mad.

There's a more extreme version of this. It's a webtoon titled money game and pie game. They basically just throw random people together in a building, tell them to stay for a specific amount of days to get money, basically the same premise but without bathroom, with more rules (like the rules that say they need to be inside their own room after a certain hour) etc.
Like, random hot lady shows up, awesome! Now we can play like a bunch of other games and maybe trade secrets or whatever. We could all take turns showering and see who does it the fastest or who can make the bed in the worst way, stuff like that.
Ur not realizing that the naked women is part of the experiment. Her whole existence is to cause tension between the couple. If a girl wont bother u then a guy. They will also try their best to manipulate the situation to cause tension.
It was pretty much the same in the mental hospital 2 years ago. They lock you in your room at least 5 hours a day where you are supposed to question yourself and your life. There were board games, a television and some couches but nothing more. Every morning, the nurses gathered everyone at the nursery for daily body examinations. And when nighttime comes, we all gather at the same place again to take the pills. If someone had the balls to escape the appeal, they would have serious troubles like being confined in a chamber, stay longer at the hospital or even forced to take their meds by injection. Also, you better not creep out or having a burn out there. Even if you were one of the teenagers in the most secured unit of the hospital, they would immediately send you to lockdown and tell the doctor about it. The moments when you see the doctor are decisive, you say one wrong word and it’s over for you. So I had to lie about everything to be freed after 4 months. Otherwise I would have spent a whole year or maybe more if I was myself. They sent me there after a burn out at school. Then, for some reason I had « Psychotic Symptoms » according to a doctor I’ve never known before. But regarding the situation in that « child friendly unit », it’s not surprising that 70% of all patients in my unit were depressed. But thanks to the Social Security, my family did not had to worry about the 50€ they farm each day on me.
This would be extremely easy. If you've ever had unaliving thoughts around where I'm from, you'll know that all white walls, being forbidden from hearing any news from the outside world, only having flavorless food, no entertainment, thin all one color cotton pajamas every day, and extreme restrictions on any kind of human contact is just every mental health facility.
Mike who doesn't want to invest and just party all his life is the typical example of people who don't see further than their nose. They don't realize inflation and that their money will lower and lower overtime living nothing to their kids.
This shouldn't have been a issue. They split the $5 million evenly. Even if he blows his $2.5 million simply having fun, she still has control over her own $2.5 million.

ye i have been in my room since i was 11 years old, now im 22 and then i was corona memes before it came out, people joking about 100 years having passed and saying every 100 years come a pleague then corona actually happen and for me nothing happen i just kept doing what i always did, stay in my room all alone. literally i was laughing at it as i heard people cry like kids for being 1 week at home crying how they got bored ecc i wanted to bitch slap so many fucking people during it i swear... cant they just shut up and stay home silently? 50 days is really bs, you pass half of it by sleeping, shitting and showering. to pass time you can work out, day dream, fuck on every corner, play some "familly" games, like you say one word and the other person says one word that starts with the last letter of the previous word and games like that 50 days are a fucking joke
@@seven7775 Nah I lived in Strict hostel dorms where phones are allowed for a year. I'm used to not using phones a lot. I used to spent most of my days in my dorm room either sleeping or studying that was the worst time of my life but now I'm lacking ability to meet people and prefer alone. I think I need Therapy

For the people that say this is a piece of cake and that you spend more time at home locked away all the time, y'all are really forgetting the biggest difference between spending time alone at home for days or a few weeks at a time to this room. Its that you're at home in a very familiar place im assuming with some form of entertainment to keep you from being bored, whether its your phone, television, social media, a gaming console, books, etc. This room provides none of that at all and only gives you the bare necessities needed to keep you alive. Many are gonna find themselves going crazy within the first 2 weeks of isolation.
Literally just use the treat to get some sort of activity that you can sink a lot of time into. The crayon was a brilliant idea, but why not even ask for a crayon set? This would be much harder if the guy was alone. And there was a Japanese guy who did a much worse challenge for much less, and the producers abused him to an extent that he has yet to mentally recover.

There’s a bed and a sofa. Everything is white or in muted colors. There’s no form stimuli of any kind. You’re in a sensory deprivation scenario. The room’s system doesn’t respond to verbal cues. You come in with just the clothes on your back and are immediately ask to disrobe and change into clothes provided by game. A top and bottom. You receive no socks or footwear. You have nothing. No Wi-Fi, no cellular device, no television, no computer, no gaming console, no internet, no electronics, no books or magazines. You have no communication with the outside world. You have no access to the outdoor. You have no access to windows, no natural sun light. You have nothing. It’s just you and your game partner.
But you wouldnt be alone. You are with your partner. Its easy. Super easy. Only mentally unstable people would not be able to do this challenge like nothing. Considering you spend 5 hours each day doing basic stuff, eating, showering, exercising, sex, you only need to find 11 hours worth of entertainment each day for 50 days straight, when you are with your partner. Talk to each other. Ramble about the life of each other in detail. Play games. Have some alone time to gather your own thoughts. I could talk about my life for 50 days revisiting every moment i remember, cracking jokes, exploring different perspectives and "what ifs" with my partner. Game is only hard if you are alone, not with your partner
I really enjoy stories like these. It doesn’t take a major Hollywood movie budget to make a thought-provoking movie - ‘what I would’ve done in that situation?’
Everyone says they'll do it until they're actually there. This is torture. I couldn't even imagine. No source of entertainment for 50 days.... that's 1200 hours, 72,000 minutes. Guys, that is an INSANE amount of time to have NOTHING to do. I guarantee if we placed the people "willing" to do it in a room for even 12hours with nothing to do they would struggle big time.
Hmm. Nah I'd make it. But my personality would allow me to. Knowing that after 50 really shitty days, I would have 1000s of awesome ones ahead of me. I'd brainstorm a bunch of ways for entertainment. Like someone said, sleep like.. 12 hours a day. Make up stories in my head if I have to. Meditate. Do Yoga idk.

I feel like half way through writing this movie they realized that 50 days of nothing isn’t that hard, so let’s just introduce a gun, do nothing with it, introduce a chick. Do nothing with it and use it as a plot device to stir things up and again reference the gun that was never used lol
I think it would be easier for an older couple ...if you grew up in the 70s & 80s? Most of your life was imagination or nothing. I would really miss reading books ....but I think as parents ? My ex husband ( my bff) and I could do it . It would be really hard but I don''t think it would be AS HARD as for younger people whose lives have been filled with entertainment, connections through devices etc . I could be wrong but thats just my gut feeling.
@EvanMurphyCapstone it would be easy-you are literally with someone and know the time. Just remember you're goal to get that much money. Making money working is way harder even in a good paying job. Hell would be alone in a Dark rook barely being able to move for 50 days.
I wouldn't mind having 5 million dollars, but wouldn't do that kind of challenge for it. Being stuck in a room too long can indeed make you depressed enough to lose your sanity. I'm single at the moment, but even with a girlfriend/wife, I'd hate for us to be stuck in a place like that for 50 days straight. That would feel like being in prison.
I feel like this is a relationship that was doomed to fail either way, and this just sped up the process. Kate and Mike seem like exact opposites in almost every way. Mike grew up with wealthy parents, Kate's drank away all her money. Mike wanted to sleep in while Kate set an alarm, spend vs save, even the bug was live vs kill. Maybe it has some deeper meaning though, idk.
I think the biggest problem here is that Kate, to me, seemed greedy. Even if she didn't get 2.5 mil, 500k is a lot of money. If they had known what the rules were before going in or agreeing to go in, I think they should have talked out whether or not they were okay with getting 500k each. I also think that the treats would have been perfectly fine for either of them to buy, as long as the person who partakes in the treat is the one who pays for it. If they both partake in it, they both split the cost. I also think coping with sensory deprivation is different for everyone. As Kate seemed to be a very goal oriented person, I think she should have set goals for herself while in the experiment, instead of just doing yoga and meditation. Whether it's "I'm going to learn to do the splits", or "I'm going to get strong enough to do 100 pushups", Kate seems to me like someone who needs direction, and without it, she quickly becomes disoriented and starts to spiral mentally. I like the idea that someone else here had, which was making an activity out of using the gun. If it never gets reloaded, then it can't be used as a weapon once the bullets run out, and if it does, then there are more chances to associate it with playing, and the game will provide stimulation for both parties. For me, the challenge would have been social isolation and boredom. Like Mike, my brain needs a lot of stimulation and social contact, and I can actually start hallucinating fairly quickly if I don't get that stimulation bc of my mental health. However, I'm also fairly goal oriented, and likely would have wanted to set up a routine of some sort to keep myself busy. What would have been important for me would be establishing ground rules of communication and financial responsibility with my partner, and finding ways to create stimulation for myself, especially ones that only require my body (dancing, music, calisthenics, etc). Love all the people saying this challenge it's in fact easy, while knowing most of them probably spend most of their time with their phone on youtube. To anyone thinking it's easy. Stay still and meditate for just 2 hours, without going to sleep. I have not been outside my house in the past 4 weeks, no isolation, nothing just anxiety. And 3 years ago I would have been one of you, but I realise I use most of my time on a computer, to talk to family and friends from across the borders, or to work and play. Even with no internet I spend hours on it just drawing, writing or playing games. You don't have that there, you don't even have a book. Unless you can stay still in one room for multiple hours and do nothing, this experiment would be extremely hard. You might say you like sleep or working out, but that has a limited use. You can't sleep for that period straight and if you do sleep for 15 hours then you have the next 24 hours to be up, and you can't workout constantly either. So multiple of those 2-3 hour brackets where you can only think, put back to back would cause extreme anxiety, paranoia, maybe even hallucinations at one point. Granted this experiment makes it easier by showing you the time, presuming you can trust it, and also providing lighting to give you a simulated cycle. But otherwise, it's a heavy toll. I really liked the movie as it does seem to stick to its narrative of it being an experiment. With the stuff I said above it does not seem to be inspecting the torture method but genuinely just a curiosity for the human psyche. And the ending is nice as well. Plus the added benefit of actually having the roles reversed in this situation. Usually it's the male that goes nuts and starts threatening, but it's nice to see a focus more on the nurture part of nurture vs nature, since Kate would be the person to cave into the desperation of the money due to her upbringing. Would have really liked to see what the second treat was for Kate.
Its easy because you have your partner with you. You already spend like 5 hours doing basic stuff (showering, eating, exercise, sex), you only need 11 more hours of entertainment each day considering you sleep 8 hours. 11 hours talking with any of my previous partners for 50 days straight is not that hard. Each one of you can ramble about your life for 5 hours and a half each day and get to know in detail the life of your partner. You can play games. You can do improv. Tell jokes. Its super easy to do if you with your partner
MrBeast did this. It was for a tenth of the money and double the time. He had enough food but he still had to ration. It also had a happier ending than this. Lol.
Being a couple makes it harder as eventually you grow to despise each other and do terrible things, where as being alone...all you have is yourself, your thoughts and endless room for creativity and self reflection, spiritual development even. We think we need other people, but in reality we don't, it limits us.

Being alone, however, takes strength of mind, willpower, it's only then an individual can truly develop and express him/herself, it's why so few can remain sane when isolated. Unfortunately the vast majority of people are somewhat primitive, animalistic even, hence the inability to live without other people, the longing for connection, recognition...to be worth, to mean something.
Humans are social creatures so not having anyone to talk to and nothing to do for fifty days would take a toll on your mental health. Especially in an age where entertainment and communication are at your fingertips and it seems as if there is always something to do. Humans also need stimulation and the room has no natural light, fresh air and appears to be completely silent ( except for the Ai voice occasionally). Not to mention having the same shake and wearing the same clothes everyday. So no, you couldn't do this by yourself.
For an introvert and antisocial guy like me, this experiment will be a piece of cake for me🙂 I usually spend months indoors and feel like a pretty normal guy😆

Interesting how they were able to tolerate each other when it was just them, albeit being bored. But as soon as external factors came to play, that's when problems really started piling up: the bug, the crayon, the gun, the woman who purposely sabotaged the couple's trust. Perhaps these factors were amplified due to isolation, but if they had some discipline/goals, it would've been a lot easier. For $5 million, people can go through worse. So basically the professor pretty much wanted to fuck with them with the "treats", which I guess was part of the experiment.

It doesn't say in this recap, but I can imagine that the professor carefully selected each contestants and researched them beforehand, ensuring that the test won't be a walk in a park. Note the treats that were given to them and the videos that were prepared. It's like the professor dangled a carrot in front of them. If they gave in to temptation due to boredom, then the "treats" were designed to mess with them, in my opinion.

Damn only 50 days? We have a Japanese dude that did this solo for 15 months and his food wasn't free from the wall, he had to acquire his own food from inside the room with only magazine sweepstakes challenges. Look him up, he's called Tomoaki Hamatsu, nickname Nasubi. It's insane what they put this man through, compared to 50 days for 5 million Nasubi would have stomped that challenge.
Not impressed with that since he is clearly an introvert individual. You have to take that into account. This sort of challenges are difficult for people who are highly social, introvert have an easier time with this sort of challenges

I like how the movie subverts your expectations. Between the two, it’s expected that Mike will be the “weak link” in this room and that Kate is the sensible gardener of the relationship. Even Kate kind of dismisses Mike’ and his feelings as those of a spoiled rich boy. However, after the initial difficulties, he was right and in full control of himself in this space, and the movie did a great job of revealing how he is actually the gardener who has been struggling to care for Kate, a woman who completely dismisses his efforts and feelings.
He was totally right about taking advantage of the treats. No matter the cost, it’s better to walk out with 4.9 mill than to go crazy and lose it all. Even if you could get through 50 days with no treats, if it’s going to be detrimental to your mental stability, it’s not worth it. Kate refuses to accept that Mike may need a little more stimulation than she does, which is foolish for a game where you’re supposed to be acting like a team. Even if she is the more responsible one, there’s a line between giving advice and taking control. Mike can have a crayon if he wants, he can draw you how he wants. How dare she get so angry just because he’s not a realist (As if she didn’t know that before?)
Kates greatest flaw is her inability to process her emotions and instead store resentment. I honestly think she wanted him to have a breakdown. Why else would she even bother giving him the “candy” knowing his past?. She clearly sees Mike as a tool more than a person. Something to extend herself. Just because he’s rich doesn’t mean he hasn’t suffered. I could never imagine speaking the way she does to someone who not only has gone through their own trauma, but has also poured themselves into loving and taking care of you. It’s almost like she tries to use guilt and weaponized helplessness to keep him by her side.
Also, even from a fully rational perspective, the ending shows she’s kind of just an idiot. You know there is a gun in this room, therefore you should be avoiding violence at all costs, and you should be aware that the game master is not going to play fair. How she still can even believe that what Simone wrote on the wall ( with a crayon the researchers must have given her) is stupid. Even if he did cheat, just wait a week? And even if he did cheat, that doesn’t justify pushing him into a wall. I’m glad Mike realized the abuse he was going through because even a stranger, after causing bodily harm ( and perhaps a concussion) would’ve shown enough concern to seek help. I would’ve understood treating the wound and waiting a few hours to see if he was lucid or if there was any lingering damage, but forcing someone to possibly bleed out for a wound you’ve caused them? What a fantastic metaphor for their entire relationship. Glad they didn’t get back together.
Gotta say, that room would be way more of a red shade if I was to be in there, I kind of hate humans. And ofc I am a human, I hate myself the most. That would be my blood.

I disagree, when you first get together with someone you are learning and growing with them, you are learning their flaws and their strengths, as you spend more time with the person, you both grow and learn and change into a different person, someone who is super compatible with the other based on time, experience and problem solving throughout the time you have been with that person. honestly i dont know why this even seems difficult at all. 50 days is pretty easy in my opinion as long as you are aware what you are in for and you have proper discipline. for me i would make sure we have some sort of routine that we can improve on everyday like pushups situps running handstands etc. i would try to talk to the other person about stories in life for every single year of our lives for each day. then maybe some facts that we know. when the gun appears i would immediately make an activity out of it like trying to shoot a tiny object on the other side of the room. maybe they reload the gun each day. that would be another activity. there are just so many things you can do that are spontaneous and routine that could almost guarantee you can hold out 50 days maybe even more in my opinion.

I think the point is it might be more difficult than you think. It's not just spending 50 days with someone, it's spending 50 days in a pretty much empty room. The space might seem like a benefit, but it might actually not help or make things worse. The most logical course is to simply sleep it off and set proper schedules and boundaries. But who knows what you'll feel like after even a week, even the smallest common noises the other person makes could drive you mad, until you have an outburst, which makes them upset, which creates on going tension that can build up to a breaking point. For 5 million I'd find a way to stick it out, but the other person would be the real worry, because if they're going mad, you not going mad might make them even madder and take it out on you.

Absolutely couldn't do this on my own, but could easily do this with any one of my good friends. Conversation and sleep and a bit of exercise is about all I need, I can talk for hours with my friends no problem. Not to say it'd be easy, the food would definitely get to me because I like nice food, and the lack of sunlight and fresh air would be the worst, but for that amount of money it wouldn't even be a question. 50 days of determination and focus to do literally anything I could imagine for the rest of my life? @@truzle6133 yes, it would. Most people work for 45-50 years, if you were earning the average salary of 40k, you only earn 2 million pre tax in your entire lifetime. Most people survive on that, though not comfortably. I would have that money instantly so I could set my life up to be a lot more sustainable, and obviously could work if I needed to top it up at any stage. Not to mention the dollar is worth more than the euro right now so I'd actually have a bit more than 5 mill :)

Easiest money in the world. It's under two months. You get enough food. You can catch up on sleep. You can stretch, do calisthenics. Meditate, daydream. Play verbal games. You can play chess in your mind. You can share stories. Visualize.
This is basically sensory deprivation and it is extremely hard even tho it looks easy. Vsauce Michael made an episode about it where he explains everything even the white interrior has a reason. It's very hard and a torture for a human being for even a shorter than 50 days i guess.
That's the main point. The only form of stimulation is the other person. So it tests how the people can keep each other adequately stimulated or not without outside influences. It just turns out that experiencing those outside influences together is a big part of being social.
Another person being present helps aid is sensory deprivation. It’s only a form of torture when they are separated by SOCIAL activities. 50 days is nothing for a normal person being with someone they like.

50 days is just about enough time to make up your mind on what to invest the money into and how to make the most out of it. They could have just fired the gun for fun and to make it impossible to use it in a bad way later on. They could have given the bug poop to eat. The crayon and candy could have been used to create a game like chess. Dreams offer plenty of entertainment. Solitary confinement would be hard but two people. eh. Emotionally stable mature people wouldn't have a problem but then again many people are emotionally unstable and undisciplined and have not experienced significant difficulties in life and therefore easily get out of control over minor non issues

When I was in the U.S Army, I spent 15 months deployed to a dusty remote location in Afghanistan followed by a 12 month deployment to Iraq. So this 50 days challenge in an empty room would be a vacation for me compared to my deployments.

And it was insanely easy. I dont get bothered by almost anything. Putting me there for 365days for 20mil would be the easiest 20mil ever made in the history of man kind..
Yeah society in general tends to make judgments based on being social. So everyone must be in a relationship, must have lots of friends, etc, or else you'll be regarded as unhappy/lonely/weird. They basically just throw random people together in a building, tell them to stay for a specific amount of days to get money, basically the same premise but without bathroom, with more rules (like the rules that say they need to be inside their own room after a certain hour) etc.

It was pretty much the same in the mental hospital 2 years ago. They lock you in your room at least 5 hours a day where you are supposed to question yourself and your life. There were board games, a television and some couches but nothing more.
Every morning, the nurses gathered everyone at the nursery for daily body examinations. And when nighttime comes, we all gather at the same place again to take the pills.
If someone had the balls to escape the appeal, they would have serious troubles like being confined in a chamber, stay longer at the hospital or even forced to take their meds by injection.
Also, you better not creep out or having a burn out there. Even if you were one of the teenagers in the most secured unit of the hospital, they would immediately send you to lockdown and tell the doctor about it. The moments when you see the doctor are decisive, you say one wrong word and it’s over for you. So I had to lie about everything to be freed after 4 months. Otherwise I would have spent a whole year or maybe more if I was myself. They sent me there after a burn out at school. Then, for some reason I had « Psychotic Symptoms » according to a doctor I’ve never known before. But regarding the situation in that « child friendly unit », it’s not surprising that 70% of all patients in my unit were depressed. But thanks to the Social Security, my family did not had to worry about the 50€ they farm each day on me.

If you've ever had unaliving thoughts around where I'm from, you'll know that all white walls, being forbidden from hearing any news from the outside world, only having flavorless food, no entertainment, thin all one color cotton pajamas every day, and extreme restrictions on any kind of human contact is just every mental health facility.

For the people that say this is a piece of cake and that you spend more time at home locked away all the time, y'all are really forgetting the biggest difference between spending time alone at home for days or a few weeks at a time to this room.
Its that you're at home in a very familiar place im assuming with some form of entertainment to keep you from being bored, whether its your phone, television, social media, a gaming console, books, etc. This room provides none of that at all and only gives you the bare necessities needed to keep you alive. Many are gonna find themselves going crazy within the first 2 weeks of isolation.
Literally just use the treat to get some sort of activity that you can sink a lot of time into.

Everyone says they'll do it until they're actually there. This is torture. I couldn't even imagine. No source of entertainment for 50 days.... that's 1200 hours, 72,000 minutes. Guys, that is an INSANE amount of time to have NOTHING to do. I guarantee if we placed the people "willing" to do it in a room for even 12hours with nothing to do they would struggle big time.

I think it would be easier for an older couple ...if you grew up in the 70s & 80s? Most of your life was imagination or nothing. I would really miss reading books ....but I think as parents ? My ex husband ( my bff) and I could do it . It would be really hard but I don''t think it would be AS HARD as for younger people whose lives have been filled with entertainment, connections through devices etc . I could be wrong but thats just my gut feeling.

I wouldn't mind having 5 million dollars, but wouldn't do that kind of challenge for it. Being stuck in a room too long can indeed make you depressed enough to lose your sanity. I'm single at the moment, but even with a girlfriend/wife, I'd hate for us to be stuck in a place like that for 50 days straight. That would feel like being in prison.

I feel like this is a relationship that was doomed to fail either way, and this just sped up the process. Kate and Mike seem like exact opposites in almost every way. Mike grew up with wealthy parents, Kate's drank away all her money. Mike wanted to sleep in while Kate set an alarm, spend vs save, even the bug was live vs kill. Maybe it has some deeper meaning though, idk.
I think the biggest problem here is that Kate, to me, seemed greedy. Even if she didn't get 2.5 mil, 500k is a lot of money. If they had known what the rules were before going in or agreeing to go in, I think they should have talked out whether or not they were okay with getting 500k each. I also think that the treats would have been perfectly fine for either of them to buy, as long as the person who partakes in the treat is the one who pays for it. If they both partake in it, they both split the cost.
I also think coping with sensory deprivation is different for everyone. As Kate seemed to be a very goal oriented person, I think she should have set goals for herself while in the experiment, instead of just doing yoga and meditation. Whether it's "I'm going to learn to do the splits", or "I'm going to get strong enough to do 100 pushups", Kate seems to me like someone who needs direction, and without it, she quickly becomes disoriented and starts to spiral mentally.
I like the idea that someone else here had, which was making an activity out of using the gun. If it never gets reloaded, then it can't be used as a weapon once the bullets run out, and if it does, then there are more chances to associate it with playing, and the game will provide stimulation for both parties.
For me, the challenge would have been social isolation and boredom. Like Mike, my brain needs a lot of stimulation and social contact, and I can actually start hallucinating fairly quickly if I don't get that stimulation bc of my mental health. However, I'm also fairly goal oriented, and likely would have wanted to set up a routine of some sort to keep myself busy. What would have been important for me would be establishing ground rules of communication and financial responsibility with my partner, and finding ways to create stimulation for myself, especially ones that only require my body (dancing, music, calisthenics, etc). Also, if I knew what the experiment was about (sensory deprivation) beforehand, I would have researched its effects and how to mitigate them with the limited resources I had.
Everything is good, but Kate wasn't really "greedy" or anything, (to me.) I mean with all that money it would be a life changer for her. Don't forget Mike had everything funded for him from his dad while Kate didn't. I don't think she was greedy. (My opinion don't attack) But ye everything you said was true 500k is a lot! Love all the people saying this challenge it's in fact easy, while knowing most of them probably spend most of their time with their phone on youtube. To anyone thinking it's easy. Stay still and meditate for just 2 hours, without going to sleep. I have not been outside my house in the past 4 weeks, no isolation, nothing just anxiety. And 3 years ago I would have been one of you, but I realise I use most of my time on a computer, to talk to family and friends from across the borders, or to work and play. Even with no internet I spend hours on it just drawing, writing or playing games. You don't have that there, you don't even have a book. Unless you can stay still in one room for multiple hours and do nothing, this experiment would be extremely hard. You might say you like sleep or working out, but that has a limited use. You can't sleep for that period straight and if you do sleep for 15 hours then you have the next 24 hours to be up, and you can't workout constantly either. So multiple of those 2-3 hour brackets where you can only think, put back to back would cause extreme anxiety, paranoia, maybe even hallucinations at one point. Granted this experiment makes it easier by showing you the time, presuming you can trust it, and also providing lighting to give you a simulated cycle. But otherwise, it's a heavy toll.
I really liked the movie as it does seem to stick to its narrative of it being an experiment. With the stuff I said above it does not seem to be inspecting the torture method but genuinely just a curiosity for the human psyche. And the ending is nice as well. Plus the added benefit of actually having the roles reversed in this situation. Usually it's the male that goes nuts and starts threatening, but it's nice to see a focus more on the nurture part of nurture vs nature, since Kate would be the person to cave into the desperation of the money due to her upbringing. Would have really liked to see what the second treat was for Kate.

Being a couple makes it harder as eventually you grow to despise each other and do terrible things, where as being alone...all you have is yourself, your thoughts and endless room for creativity and self reflection, spiritual development even. We think we need other people, but in reality we don't, it limits us.

Unfortunately the vast majority of people are somewhat primitive, animalistic even, hence the inability to live without other people, the longing for connection, recognition...to be worth, to mean something.
Humans are social creatures so not having anyone to talk to and nothing to do for fifty days would take a toll on your mental health. Especially in an age where entertainment and communication are at your fingertips and it seems as if there is always something to do. Humans also need stimulation and the room has no natural light, fresh air and appears to be completely silent ( except for the Ai voice occasionally). Not to mention having the same shake and wearing the same clothes everyday. So no, you couldn't do this by yourself.
