Would love to see you put these in the hands of a player these are targeted for and compare them to what they are playing at present. Another revealing honest review.
Went for a ping g430 iron fitting today, struggling with distance and trajectory on my present irons apex dcb with recoil f3 shafts. Older golfer with slow swing speed. Tried the 430s and immediately added more distance and a little better trajectory possibly down to moving to a recoil f2 shaft. The fitter then changed to the 923hl and ball after ball had this amazing (for me) trajectory and more forgiving straighter flight and much nicer feel. We then went on and tried Paradym and Stealth irons but none of them had the feel trajectory or forgiveness of the Mizunos. Had tried the JPX923 range previously and didn’t get on with them but these were a relegation for me, ordered a set 5_GW and can’t wait to get on to the course again. I had almost fallen out of love with the game, good move by Mizuno to look after aging golfers with a slower swing speed, handicap 15 and an unfit 65 year old, thanks Mizuno 👍
I just bought the women's JPX923 Hot Metal HL irons 6-PW this week. I already love the new mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal HL irons. I used to play with top flite irons from around 2012, so the mizuno irons are definitely an upgrade for me.

I recently got fitted for irons and these HL irons were better suited for my game than the Cobra SZ irons that I was using. I’ve used them now about 5 times and am amazed at how high I’m hitting them. I’m carrying them further than the Cobras but I’m hitting about a half club less in total distance. I’m loving the forgiveness they are affording me and the sound is great! Everything in your review is spot on. Thanks from a new subscriber.

I have really enjoyed your game improvement iron videos. I turn 60 in January and have been struggling with my MP33 blades as of late, granted I don’t play or practice as much as I used to. Coming from traditional blades, I struggle with offset since I naturally draw the ball, but the sheer mass of the clubs I’ve hit in the shops in comparison to my blades seems to have kept my hands from turning as fast, so I’m not getting hooks as badly as I thought I would. Never considered the 923HL until this video, and would prefer functional distance over all out distance. These are still a club+ stronger than my current blades, but not 2 clubs like like most everything else. I can still hit my 7 iron 150-55 on solid strikes, but that unfortunately has seen a dip in consistency, hence the shopping for new clubs. Was cranking the G430 7 iron out to 170 in the shop yesterday…yeah it felt nice to be hitting far, but also knew I was basically hitting just a little shy of current 5 iron. Had a fitting today for the HL’s fitter recommended A flex in the Recoil ESX Graphite, 7i swing speed 68mph. I’m 70 years old, what a difference to my current Ping 425’s on a reg Graphite, the difference was night and day.

This is the concept I have been looking for forever ...finally found one...the mavrik max is build on the same concept whereby they have thick soles for lower cg but they are not jack lofted ...I am looking forward to the comparison of marik max with mizuno hot metal 923 HL

I totally agree that functional distance is more important than absolute distance. I play a course with hard greens that run off on all sides. Stopping power is essential.
I would be very intersted to see how the 923 hot metal HL stack up against the ping 425 irons which would be aimed at the same sort of golfer.

I get this completely. I'm 61 and my distances have fallen off a cliff. My stock PW for 25 yrs was 132 yds, I'm lucky to make it fly 115 these days. Tried to gain some back by buying the TEC X irons and they just dont perform for me, swing speed is to slow and the 7 iron is basically unusable. That's frustrating and puts a ton of pressure on my short game and hybrids; I've been looking for a solution. I will have to go and try these out and see if they are a fit for me.
This HL model is right up my alley .Its lofts are identical to my 10 year old JPX 800 HD irons- even the offset is the same! So why switch? Because of the new Metals used ,the MOI,and COG placements,should make these irons even more forgiving and powerful. Am going to get fitted, bringing along my 800 HD 6 iron to compare!!
Hi Jay, I have recently purchased a set of Callaway ST OS lite irons. They have almost identical lofts to the Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal HIGH LAUNCH irons, and also have all the Callaway game improvement technology. I have never hit a 6 iron, which is my longest iron, so high. Would love to see a head to head with these 2 irons which in all respects are very similar.

The JPX923's are one of a few irons I was thinking of to replace my 12 year old Mizuno MX300's. At first I was put off with the HiLaunch because of the supposed really weak lofts, thinking it would cost me distance. Then I checked the lofts of these against my current irons and the HL's are still 1 or 2 degrees stronger lofted than the equivalent numbered iron of my MX300's.
Many thanks for the review. I am a 75 mpg swing speed. How do the HLs compare (for 70- 75 mph swing speeds) to say (i) Callaway Rogue ST O/S; and (ii) something like to Cobra T-Rails?
I’ve just been fit for these. Interestingly I swung at 80 however these performed best as I struggle for height. Tried against the Stealths and these were so much better. However went for a dynamic gold 105s in these over the regular ones in the Stealth. Flew much better for me. Also they have got a 4 iron option when I got fitted. So happy with that got 4-GW.
Hi Earl of Ipswich, you say you went for a fitting and preferred the HL and they gave you the option of purchasing a 4 iron??

Just wanted to ask as I think you'll be supplied a standard hot metal 4 iron as these are 100% not available in a 4 iron. I know companies have mixed and matched before without informing customers. Not normally too much of an issue but these are distinctly different lofted iron sets so I would double check before they deliver something to you that you can't give back due to being a custom built order 👍
Can you slow down your swing at all or get a mod swing speed player to fit?
Great review would like to see these clubs against Titleist T300/400, Taylormade stealth. Callaway DCB. Another great test would be the 923 HL versus a hybrid iron either Cleveland, Wilson or Cobra because I think that Mizuno might have got an iron that looks great but can offer the forgiveness and launch of a hybrid iron. That is unique.

I had a golf fit yesterday and the guy looked at how I swing etc and brought out a few clubs. As soon as he placed one of these in my hands it felt and looked amazing. I was hitting really sweet and high shots and kept saying WOW, WOW WOW, these are so smooth. I will be purchasing a set 6iron-sw with graphite shafts and American Golf promo are throwing in a £270 stand bag for free.
It's not an American Golf promo it's one direct from Mizuno. On every custom set 6 clubs or more they are throwing in a bag as a promo 👍 not sure how long it'll last..... Well until they run out of bags I guess 😊

On purely your comment I'd go the 923 Hot Metal HL however this would depend on so many things in your swing. A small change to your swing could open up a large array of options that I suggest would be worth looking into 👍 generally unless very mild, it's better to change the swing characteristics than try to buy a club to improve the swing fault 👍
@@AskGolfNut If I swing a 100mph with a driver, drive it 250-260..Is my speed fast enough for a 225 iron, if I change the technique or usually go with those big 923 shovels???

Would be great to see them being swung by the intended swing speed player…I love your videos, but not much to get from this with your swing speed. And, from my reading through Mizuno’s materials and their videos, the tech isn’t quite the same as the other JPX 923 line. My understanding is the CG isn’t as low on the club because it’s intended more for the player who has more forward shaft lean then your standard high handicapper…That’s why they kept the lofts the way they are…So, in the end, these aren’t necessarily geared towards your traditional high handicapper (implication is not a very good swinger)…it is geared more towards someone who is probably a former low/mid handicapper who can’t swing it as fast, but still has good technique, i.e., forward shaft lean. And because of that, lowering the CG doesn’t help since a good swinger will have forward shaft lean, contacting the ball higher on the face (many high handicappers hit it low on the face because they tend to scoop or not have forward shaft lean). I think that’s a critical difference with these clubs that many reviewers aren’t paying attention to…they are all just focusing on slower swingers…
Hi really enjoyed this review I must start by saying I've tried all three 923s using the dynamic 105 shaft to being with starting with the pro version it took a few hits to get used to it due to the smaller head its helped by switching to a 85 Gram shaft especially with launch but maybe a 95 gram Kbs shaft might be even better, the hot metal and the hot metal high launch were both tested using the the dynamic 105 gram shaft only and I hit these both really well with the difference being 5-6 yards longer the the hot metals again I would have loved to have tried using these with the 95 gram shaft, but what I liked most about your review was the stopping power of the high launch which I think has the edge over distance and possibly giving you a little more control when attacking the greens which using the standard 28.5 degrees of loft might see you run through the greens which happens quite a lot when the ground is hard along with the greens in high summer.
I’m just watching this video today. I’m 75 swing speed with 7 iron 75 to 78 playing the hot metal 923 that’s been my problem can’t hold the green or a long roll out. I’m going to test the HL this week thanks for the video

Hi Walter, sorry the reason, why I did it at my normal speed was that I did the same speed for all the new JPX923 models so people can gleam any differences in flight etc if they watched the series of videos. I have another video coming soon that shows slower swing speed players..... I believe its 75mph so make sure you subscribe and get the notification bell on as it will be coming soon 👍
Here is a message for Mizuno's Chris Voshall in terms of what Lofts I think make sense:
- JPX Tour - 34-degree 7-iron, JPX Forged - 32-degree 7-iron (similar to the T100, T100S)
- JPX Hot Metal HL - 7-iron 33-degree, JPX Hot Metal Pros 31-degree 7-iron, JPX Hot Metals 29-degree 7-iron
Please stop letting the marketing department decide how to build a golf bag and let the fitters do it.
Great move by Mizuno. I think Ping has also gone this way a bit with the G425 irons. These two are superior to any hollow body game improvement iron IMO. Now if Mizuno made a JPX Forged High Launch, I would buy it.

Compare the JPX923 HL against the Taylormade Stealth. Those are the two I was most impressed with while at the local golf store a few weeks ago.
Stealth lofts are jacked in comparison, you'll want to test them yourself.
Im a low left draw player so a HL Mizzy w help really looks sweat! Did your spin go up or down, that matters too for us here in AZ... current gamers are Apex DCB, how would these compare to those?
They will be very similar - offset, large perimeter weighting, only about 1 degree different. The next level of more launch is a Cleveland Launcher Xl Halo or the Wilson Launch Pads
Why do these clubs have so much offset? If you are a decent ball striker does so much offset hurt you or is it irrelevant? Who benefits from so much offset? Thanks for helping me understand
I just did my demo. @AskGolfNut - I tested them against the pros. The pros held up with the HL on launch angle which I was rather surprised. The standards.... may end up in the bag. What were your thoughts overall?
Overall, for the average slow swinger I'm really excited for what a higher lofted iron will mean for them going forward. It won't work with everyone and some will gain more than they think..... It'll be very individual, like most things golf 😊
@@AskGolfNut agreed. I started laughing when hitting them because how fast they shot up. I won't play them. Honestly, the standard ones have a good chance of making the bag. The pros were really good on manipulating the ball.
How would you expect these to compare with the Ping G425 retro fit - the lofts would be pretty similar although not identical ? Would weakening the lofts 2 degrees for the 9 iron of the HL ( to 42) to make a better gapping to my wedges be detrimental
I would think the offset would cause a draw/hook. That would be my concern with these.
I'd like to do a mix set of these and the regular HM's. But I'm concerned with the difference in distance between the two sets. Any suggestions?
I’ve hit all 3, and the HM HL definitely gets the ball up and in turn feels a little more forgiving, but I had distance and ball speed drop offs compared to the regular HL

I play 223’s with a 2 iron in the 225. Looks like one of these in a 2 iron could be fun…shame they stop at a 5!
I would maybe emphasize that these game improvement irons do more for resistance to twist and bettering dispersion than it is gaining distance. The ball speeds are only slightly higher than a players cavity. The big reason most game improvement clubs are longer is due to lower loft. I like that Mizuno makes the option of a higher lofted 7 iron, but most people don't need it. It seems to be for people that have unusually low launch. If people need height, they should be looking at incorporating more hybrids. Much easier to hit.
Is there a reason why this wouldn't be a good option for a faster swing speed mid/high handicap player?
My 7 iron speed is 90-92 mph but I struggle a bit with consistency and ball striking so I am looking at GI irons (~14 handicap). I don't really need the jacked lofts that most of the GI irons have because I don't need the extra distance, but my ball striking is not good enough to play MB/CB irons that have traditional lofts. So would this HL version be a better fit for a player like me than the regular Hot Metal irons?
Hi William, good point you make and yes in essence your are correct. It could also work quite well for the golfer of the higher swing speed to give sensible loft / distance gapping between irons. The big problem with Game Improvement irons are the stronger loft for the faster setting speed golfer as the distance created causes gapping issues so going to the HL versions could maintain usable jumps.
All the benefits of the game improvement design but without the pitfalls of them 👍

and how about a fitting with these for a high speed steeper player? i’m concerned there is a high speed market that could benefit from these too. IMO these need to be tested by more people than just slow swingers. What could a stronger new player or 5-15 handicap player do with these with s400 or Motus 125? In all my thoughts i can’t see a downside. Show me !! Help Jay Help!!!

Do all HL irons have tons of offset? I already play with a slight draw, won't these make me hooky?
In true terms offset makes no actual difference to flight. It's a part of design that manufacturers know that golfers perceive it in a certain way regardless of its actual affect. For example if they made a Game Improvement iron with no offset, sales would suffer due to people thinking offset helps them and then seeing the club automatically as less helpful before they even hit it. First shot that isn't what they want to see is straight away blamed on it and it's dumped off immediately.
Face angle is key and offset literally from that point makes no difference whatsoever 👍🏻
finally a Mizuno iron I can use.
Got fitted for these and was hesistant with the HL due to thinking its the 'old man' version of the club. But honestly it does exactly what it says on the tin. Swinging 80mph with 7i goes a great height. I had a stiff shaft put in as well which made the whole thing come together. If you ever hit a 7i and it rolls out past the green, give these a try and see what some launch can do.
How about comparing it to the Ping 430 HL?

921 hot metals with true temper elevate shafts (TT elevate designed for loftt jacking irons for more height and spin)
they don't offer that shaft - the closest is the TT DG 95 or the KBS Tour Lite

This was a really good, honest review. Nice to see you point out all the benefits of this iron, high ball flight, more forgiveness, better dispersion and it’s sneaky long without saying it’s for people who can’t play golf, because it’s not. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you hit the ball better than you did with these Mizuno HL irons. You were dead on the flag. People get so carried away with these strong lofted, player distance irons thinking they’re going to hit the ball a country mile but they don’t have the speed to do it. Plus by the time they hit hole 13-14 they’re already wore out and losing speed. Mizuno should have just call these Hot Metal traditional cause that’s what they are. They have a traditional loft that all us older guys grew up with. Must of us don’t need those ballistic cannons , we’re playing from the gold tee’s and rarely hit more than a 7 iron in unless it’s a par 5. I just ordered a set of Mizuno HL. They feel great , stop on a dime and are so easy to hit. And yes , you can work the ball with these irons cause I tried to when I got fitted . Never owned Mizuno’s before but I do know they make great irons. Thanks for the honest review.

Love to but PXG aren't replying to my attempts at getting hold of them.... I've so far has reluctance from a few manufacturers to release media samples for testing when they realise what my testing is like and how it is data driven not marketing hype.... I'm not saying that this is the case but from a win win situation I can't see a reason why PXG wouldn't want to send a few media samples out for review content 🤷🤷👍🏻👍🏻
if your showing clubs for lower swing speeds then why not slow down your swing?

I'd need to get a Retro lofted G425 to do the test. Remember also with retro lofting the offset and bounce is affected. The G425 already has a decent amount of bounce..... Hard ground turf interaction might be interesting with even more bounce 🤔

You could but with the loft differences it would be a touch tricky to get what's needed especially if there was any lie adjustments also.
I'd play a full set of HL if that is what's suggested/required.
The Srixons are a fairly low spinning iron so will be interesting to see what the spin differences are between the 2 sets 👍
Would be interesting to compare the HL to the forged model since they are the same loft to compare the peak height, launch angle etc

That’s a 6 Iron (mid-stamped as a 7 iron). However the spin rate and distance appears to be in line for a 6 iron. The chubby look and offset would probably not appeal to players but the forgiveness would help a few.
Swing at 70
I wish it was that easy to swing slower and maintain my delivery but I can't. I could do 3/4 swings but then I tend to deloft more and would then mess up and comparison like for like.
Best thing I can hope to do is capture some swings from real golfers that swing at that speed whilst comparing within a custom fitting environment to see the benefits 👍
If they want 70, they should stop by my channel, I tested the HL against the old Adams.
No, a 28 degree 7 iron. Who fooling who? All this tech. But really only jack up lofts. Even the high launch 31 degree. Not for me anymore.
Hi Jay I would have liked to see you hit the 5 iron at 70 mph to let us know the height we would get. I’ve ordered 7 to pw and may go to fli his as I’m not sure about flighting a 5 and 6 iron at my 72 mph swing speed. 🏌️♂️
Hi Wayne, not sure anyone swinging at 70 with the additional length of the 5 iron over the 7 iron should be playing a 5 iron. I would say that depending on loft delivery, 6 iron at that speed would be maximum, maybe the 5 iron at 75 mph. 👍
