Thanks, having played the i210’s for three years now you’ve confirmed what I thought. There was a reason the 210’s lasted four years, they’re excellent. I love the looks of the 230’s and will demo them but for me the 210’s are supreme. Perhaps the next i iteration for me!
Got my 230's last year; 4-U in standard loft. I'm a quickly improving 16 HCP and I love the way they feel and look while addressing the ball. They actually inspire a ton of confidence for me and are very forgiving. I will really come into these clubs as I continue to improve. Great rundown Coach.
I am coming out of the Apex Pro 21 which I really enjoyed but I didn’t realize how much I needed the i230. I got the retro spec and I can’t believe the accuracy and distance consistency. I think anyone going to a fitting should try these. High or low handicap anyone can play them if you have decent swing speed
Really nice review. I'm currently in the market for new irons (have had 2 sets over the last 19 years) and the 230s are on the short list. Thanks for the great effort to inform.
I can’t help but love all the videos where my man always has to say he hits the ball better then most of us can dream…. I love it keep it up, and agree we get way more out of videos at that speed
Many thanks for a great review/comparison vid, your attention to detail is exceptional👍👍 I love the way PING go about their work improving their clubs and only launching new versions when they have produced something better than the existing product. There is no rushing out new products every year and none of the marketing BS that we get with certain other brands. I wasn't planning on changing my current Irons anytime soon, but the i230 has certainly got me tempted to raid my Piggy Bank.
Hi Bandit, I haven't had a piggy bank for quite some years 😊 well worth a test, they have done an amazing job in the design of the i230 and a club that could be used by so many golfers across the handicap range.
@@AskGolfNut LOL Sadly my Piggy is pretty underfed these days, but I am tempted to give them a try, probably with the new G series when released. Although on paper the G would be a better match for my age/handicap profile I always play better with a thinner sole (with wide sole Irons my ball striking goes rapids downhill). I am also intrigued to see whether the standard or power lofts would give me better numbers.
If I was playing someone for circa £1350 and it came down to an approach shot at the last where I needed an extra few yards carry over water etc. to win, I might consider changing up from my I210s or then again I might just take an extra club for that shot.
I'm assuming the rather particular £1350 number is driven by how much a set of the same composition you play is to buy? Agree that if it was, only that then absolutely don't waste your money, but I guess if you are someone who really needs to be custom fitted for your irons and the i210s aren't available anymore in custom fit then some may justify going that way. Although I personally think that if you have a set of fitted i210s then at present there isn't any justifiable reason to upgrade..... Unless money burns holes in your pockets then why not have something new and somewhat shiny 😊
@@AskGolfNut exactly right. My i210s were custom fitted and after 3years use they are still in pretty good condition. Grooves are a constant depth across the face as I seem to use most of it most of the time. i.e. no central wear.😜 Good in depth review. Thanks for helping my decision making. 👍
I game i210 and was at a Ping fitting today at my home club. The fitters summary to me was exactly as you suggested. For me, no point in upgrading from i210 and I saw little difference at all on the trackman between the two.

Great review - I have i210 and considered switching to the i230 - but decided to try out an under the radar forged players cavity back - Fourteen TC-7. First impressions are favourable.
Hey man…I am looking for a iron that helps reduce draw and my hook as much as possible. I’m hearing the i230 due to the longer blade length and the weight in the toe, it kinda helps protect a little by slowing rotation. Some have said they have changed the toe weight to a tad heavier also to help. Guessing may give a little more shaft droop also. What are your thoughts on this and with the i230, and do you recommend a different or few other irons that are the most fade biased/anti left (right handed)
I have the i200s in green dot although Ping's chart has me as blue. In your testing did you notice the 1% lie angle difference? I understand about getting fitted but when buying 2nds you have to compromise... Great review.
How is your ball flight? The chart is just a starting point. If you see them going a bit more left than you like consistently, it could be the 1 degree more upright lie angle. You can also send it in to Ping for a free adjustment once you have it figured out via fitting on a launch monitor.
I’m in my third season with i210s , last year was unable to play much but the previous year I dropped from 15.3 to 8.9 hc This year I’m gradually improving again and really can’t justify changing clubs but if I had some spare cash? Perhaps
Best technical reviews on TH-cam. The i230 vs Taylormade P770, both 7 iron and 4 iron, would be the "dream comparison" for me. Your hard work producing this data is greatly appreciated !!
Tested the 770 vs my i210 recently, and there was no worthy gain for me. They were pretty much identical. Then tried the P790 and saw huge gains, yet I do realise they are different categories
With so little difference between the i210 and i230 I am surprised that you never threw the i200 in there. Let's face it surely that's the "real life" customer for the i230. Like me, there will be plenty out there that have a 5yr old set of i200's, that didn't bother upgrading and have been waiting for the next gen to come along. Would love to see the comparison and jump in tech from i200 to i230. Any chance?
Hi Kev, if there is enough call for it (get all your golfing friends to comment the same) as I've got loads of videos to do on my list. Happy to do the video. Just need go know enough people want it to justify the time doing it 👍
@@AskGolfNut Fair comment. Just thought it was a natural progression for most golfers to perhaps "skip" a generation. Perhaps something to include in future "new" club reviews. Probably more relevant with the likes of Ping who don't launch a new model every other day of the week. 😉 Keep up the good reviews and comparisons. Really helps the average golfer when parting with north of £1000 on new irons. 👍
Hi Keith from Kent, I would definitely put them up against each other. Performance may be not huge amounts in it, but from a forgiveness and feel point of view, quite possibly 👍
Have been gaming Mizuno JPX919 Forged for the past few seasons and absolutely love them but really want to try the i230's. However, I found for my swing, the Mizuno irons work really well, possibly due to the low bounce? meanwhile, the i230's are a bit higher bounce. Great review as always!
Ping improves their clubs in small increments. I would have guessed the 230’s are just a wee bit better. Hell, I still play i20’s I bought off ebay many years ago and they have been wonderful irons. With Ping it helps to know your lie angle if buying a used iron set thou like my green dots.
Ping are the only manufacturer to use a colour code (AFAIK) to describe lie angle. It does make knowing your spec easier for the non technical golfer 👍
With the i230 moving even more towards being the main Tour level iron with smaller profile, would love to see them replace the i59 line with something like an i300 line with cast construction and a bit of a bigger profile. As a feel player who rarely hits full shots, hollow body and hot faced irons are just not nearly as predictable for me. I’m also not a tour level striker so the bigger club head would be helpful.
Great review , been playing with i210 the last 2 and a half years just bought off the shelf and to be honest absolutely love them . For feel and forgiveness but obviously with not having been fit for them I’m not 100% on the kbs tour 120 Shafts I have In them I feel like they are spinning too high and stalling especially into any kind of wind . I play links golf in Ireland so there’s always wind . I was going to get a fitting for shaft alone in the i210 but now I’m fixed on the i230 . To be honest I’d be happy if the i230 performed the same as the 210 but to be fit to bring down the launch and spin I’d justify spending the money on them Also they look unreal and I just want something new and shiny 😅. Great to see a head to head review on them before buying tho cheers 👍
Ping offer (although not a standard option in all fitting centres) a DG 120 X that has a lot Stiff tip that could promote the ball flight you require. Only thing is that I know that accounts have to purchase them separately to standard AFS shaft options so not many fitting centres will have them. 👍
@@AskGolfNut thanks for the reply . I was looking to try project x rifle 6.0 in them but they aren’t available as an option with them as I’ve tried different irons with that shaft and they have a much more penetrating ball flight for me . Yeah maybe the x 120 might be similar hopefully the fitting centre has them options for me . Cheers again for the reply 👍
7 iron club head speed is about 89 -90 and I only seem to have problems from 7 iron down to 4 , to be honest more than likely all down to me and the strike but as I said I’ve never been fit for irons so at least after been fit il have no excuses it’s all me
If the shafts feel good otherwise, you might do better with power-speccing (some or all of) them and keeping the same shafts. Ping will adjust them for free and you can save thousands.
I don't think I am changing my pro spec 7-U I210s out. However, I am currently playing a G425 6 iron (165 yds.) and G425 4 Hybrid (185 yds.) which are the weakness in my kit. Oddly, I tend to hook the hybrid, although I like my 3 hybrid. Given the comments about the i230 irons and a G430 coming, do you have any suggestions?
I am really interested to see how this compares to g425 in terms of forgiveness(ball speed retention) when the lofts are the same. Can we do that test ? Being a high single handicap player, I love the forgiveness of the g425 and want to quantify what I would be giving up if I switch to i230.
Don’t overfocus on loft, it’s just one variable. Would be cool though to pick a distance, then compare the accuracy and ball flights of two clubs that are closest to that distance.
You can definitely can make a Ping combo bag. I have Pings in D, 3 &5 woods, 3 &4 hybrids, 1 G425 iron, 3 i210 power spec irons, 2 i21 wedges, and a Cleveland CBX Fullface SW. I originally purchased i210s with stiff steel shafts. The gaps got smaller after the difference from 9 to 8. So, I kept the i210 W and U, then got G425 in graphite 6-9. After taking good lessons, I bought an i210 9 iron in graphite in pro spec and loved the improved feel. Then, eventually, I added an i210 7 and 8. Now the weaknesses in my bag are my 4 hybrid that likes to hook and the 6 iron that doesn't feel as good and doesn't seem to be that forgiving because it appears to fly oddly. Maybe I'll find room for a 5 and/or 6 iron stamped i230 or G430.
Both great irons. I’ve been playing i210 for about 4 years and was looking to change next year. I’m not sure that the i230 would be worth the money for the minimal gains
Unless you've played your i210s so much that there is fade degradation, I would go as, far as, saying its worth the test but go into it with an open mind but demand open and transparent launch monitor data with head analysis to ensure true comparison 👍
I have had some way diff feed back from higher face shot hits. When I’m high on the face I sometimes get a dead ball. Like completely dead losing 50% distance
When the ball is it high on the face (unless the ball is on a tee) then the club is interacting with the ground first causing ploughing. Ploughing is where dirt us pulled up the face causing a cushioning effect and the ball can go absolutely no where in comparison. Also there is absolutely no 'meat' high on the face from a clubs perspective so any time you hit fairly high on the face, will be poor, with any iron 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut thanks. It happens off tee and on fluff shots in grass. Basically when I get the chance to hit high face. Don’t get me wrong, I love these clubs. Broke 80 for the first time with them. But I need to be on it and hit good shots. Toe or heel shots don’t matter. It’s just high face on center and high face close to toe.
I know of no Irons that are forgiving from high on the face. You'd have to go into some form of hybrid iron to find that. Best advice I would suggest would be to go for a lesson to understand why and more importantly how to remedy it 👍🏻
Great review, been waiting for this comparison, as I play i210s and got excited about the release of i230, was thinking about getting fit for them, now I'm not so sure if it's worth spending the coin after watching this, so thankyou, although the lure of the shiny new i230s is hard to resist for a Pingite !!
Hi Vince I would still give them a test and get "properly" custom fit for them at the time (so most probably a paid for session). As this is just my test and opinion. Thsi could differ from golfer to golfer. It's been such a long time coming, I'd definitely give them a test 👍
Thanks mate, yeah I'm going for a fitting at my club, when they arrive on November 11th, looking at $350 per club here in Australia, which I think equates to about £195. Not cheap, lol.
Wow in UK they are £167 (well that's how much I'm custom fitting them at) so not sure what that equates to in Oz money. Long way to come for a fitting though 😂👍
Are you gunna do review of the new ping i crossover? perhaps comparison to g425 crossover? Was thinking of this as a top end gapping option for me, as I can't hit hybrids, I hook them massively!! Cheers 👍
Hi Aaron it's a custom divot mat. I'm in the process of making a video about my simulation setup, make sure your subscribed and got the notification bell on so you don't miss the video coming soon 👍
In the 5 and 6 due to the slightly smalled head lengths, the physical forgiveness difference between the two is near on identical. If they had run in line head lengths then the i230s would just pip it but really the longer irons are about the same 👍🏻
Love my i210s but this was the video I was looking forward to, and it did not disappoint. I prefer the looks of the i230s over the i210s Looking at the data there were slight differences mostly explicable by strike - I think the 4mm difference in strike height between the 2 clubs probably explains most of the performance differences, but not all the differences. Not really seeing much difference in forgiveness between the i210 & i230, they are both surprisingly forgiving. Overall, the i230 is objectively a slightly better club than the i210. Not worth upgrading, but if you have you i210s damaged or stolen it would be wonderful replacement. But now we need a comparison between i230 & i59, because I think the i230 might just capture the i59 user base
Ping have got a very strong iron sector at present and that's before G430 comes. I think if anything the introduction of i230 may very well cause a slight problem for the i59. Amazing in looks as the i59 is, together with its price tag and marginal aesthetic differences to the i230, make the i230 a much better value for money option 🤔👍
I'm thinking if I did then it would potentially highlight the lack now of a need for an i59. The i230 is that good and possibly sits among the best i irons ever 🤷
Tested the i230 today. Such a solid club and felt great. Put them up against the i525. i230 is the better balance and definitely under consideration to replace MP20’s. Just need to have a conversation with the bank manager @ £180 a club!
£180 per club..... I custom fit them at £167 from memory. I don't earn or want any part of commission based purchasing as it allows me to be 100% honest. So ensuring my clients get the best price possible is important to me. 👍 I am sure most places that fit correctly (so many places that still don't use camera based indoor launch monitors with head data, and those ancient lie boards) will price match 🤞
@@AskGolfNut that was Retail quoted. Tested on GC Quod. Same shaft spec as my current but only had 1* flat heads and I am currently 2* flat. But enough to know they are worth changing to. Might need to head up to Bury St,Edmonds! I’ve got some relatives up that way I have not seen in a while! ;-)
You are always welcome 😊 if you know your specs then all is good. Standard AFS heads are 1 Upright and 1 flat for the i230 so only 1 degree off in lie but very easy to see the change needed 👍
Great vlog Golf Nut, l am thinking of new irons early next year, would love a comparison with the Ping i230 and Mizuno pro 225. These are the two sets I’m thinking off 👍⛳️
You're welcome, thanks for watching... It's an old video and now my reviews have evolved a lot. Watch one of the latest reviews say the Cobra Limit3d iron and let me know what you think 👍
IMO slowing your swing isn't a great idea. Just swing at your normal tempo. Many of us avid golfers watching reviews swing quick. 93mph is not very fast. Pretty average for lower handicaps. Nice comparison. Some improvements obviously.
It would be much easier for me if I was to swing at my normal speed. However due to being inundated with requests to swing a bit slower so that it could be more relatable to slower swings bearing in mind most golfers operate at slower speeds. I'm trying to help as many people as possible. Maybe I can add in a shot or two at the end of each dataset to showcase how it works with my normal speed 👍
@@AskGolfNut Can't please everyone. I understand that. Perhaps it might be good to adjust for the type of club. Hot Metals maybe cruise is down to mid to low 80s and something more players up into mid 90s.
Cracks me up to hear you constantly reference how fast you can swing, how viewers could only dream of that speed or distance, and how you have to dial it back to show everyone how the club performs. These are well done and I like the channel but the arrogance is a bit off putting.
Hi Southpawhacker, the reason I reference this is that in all my previous content its always been at 92,93 or 94 mph 7 iron swings, which I have received many comments over the years stating that it's absolutely unrealistic for the common golfer to relate to pro reviewer speeds. So with the channel changing and growing, I've felt the need go try and take the feedback forward (and it is quite difficult to swing slower yet retain club delivery) and to let long term viewers of the channel know that I am listening and am attempting. One thing I would definitely say is that I'm not an arrogant person, confident yes, but I do feel it's important for my viewer base to know why there is a change to my normal swing. I very much appreciate your feedback and that you feel that the videos are well done as there is a huge amount of work that goes into them. Thanks again for your comment and for watching 👍
@@AskGolfNut I should have used different/better words. You do a great job with your content and I consume it regularly. "Arrogant" was too harsh of a word for what I was truly going for - my apologies. Keep up the great work!
Hi M P P, that's the beauty about golf, everyone is different and as long as everyone fits in within a reasonable spectrum, it's each to their own. So many interesting swings on the tours. I've always had very active hips and this has always caused (since junior days) a certain amount of early extension. Having the clearance between the club and my hips means I don't have any issues within delivery. 👍 Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
I230 is by far pings best iron to date keep your 210s if you want but there not as good as the 230 play 3 or 4 rounds with the i230 and you will understand what I’m talking about distance control is second to none there not much longer than my 210s but much more consistent

Shafts I have In them I feel like they are spinning too high and stalling especially into any kind of wind . I play links golf in Ireland so there’s always wind . I was going to get a fitting for shaft alone in the i210 but now I’m fixed on the i230 . To be honest I’d be happy if the i230 performed the same as the 210 but to be fit to bring down the launch and spin I’d justify spending the money on them
Also they look unreal and I just want something new and shiny 😅.
Keep your i210’s, not enough difference between them and the i230’s to make it worth the purchase!
If you are currently happy with your i210s I'd say that this is fairly sound advice 👍
Great review Jay, what would u choose in jpx923 hot metal Pro or i230? For me of course lol. Cheers
Personally the i230 due to a more bladed look. Feel is actually quite close now the 923s slight change in acoustics. 👍
Cheers 👍
Random question, what is the Golf mat insert you are hitting off of?
Hi Aaron it's a custom divot mat. I'm in the process of making a video about my simulation setup, make sure your subscribed and got the notification bell on so you don't miss the video coming soon 👍
@@AskGolfNut appreciate it!
for 5 & 6 does the little larger 210s more forgiving than 230 or not really?
In the 5 and 6 due to the slightly smalled head lengths, the physical forgiveness difference between the two is near on identical. If they had run in line head lengths then the i230s would just pip it but really the longer irons are about the same 👍🏻
Love my i210s but this was the video I was looking forward to, and it did not disappoint.
I prefer the looks of the i230s over the i210s
Looking at the data there were slight differences mostly explicable by strike - I think the 4mm difference in strike height between the 2 clubs probably explains most of the performance differences, but not all the differences.
@@AskGolfNut an i230 vs i59 comparison video would be very much appreciated 😁
I'm thinking if I did then it would potentially highlight the lack now of a need for an i59. The i230 is that good and possibly sits among the best i irons ever 🤷
@@AskGolfNut I have to admit the i59 looks great 😁
Tested the i230 today.
Works also be interesting to test you on swing dna to see what bend profile you actually fit into against current choice 🤔🤔
Great vlog Golf Nut, l am thinking of new irons early next year, would love a comparison with the Ping i230 and Mizuno pro 225. These are the two sets I’m thinking off 👍⛳️
Two very different irons Steven, lofts and tech of the 2 are very different 👍
If I were in the market for irons and didn’t want to break the bank I would buy used i210s
It wouldn't be a bad call either 👍
thanks
Not worth a change for me. Especially as I’m currently playing off 12 and swinging my 7i at 81 mph.
As far as castings go, Ping has it down
With their insane adjustability, I would absolutely agree 👍
Sir - with all due respect, you stand very far away from the ball.
Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
I230 is by far pings best iron to date keep your 210s if you want but there not as good as the 230 play 3 or 4 rounds with the i230 and you will understand what I’m talking about distance control is second to none there not much longer than my 210s but much more consistent
Ping continue ever model to look after the golfer. They are just relentless in being able to design iteration by iteration a club that always slightly outdoes the previous version. They are possibly the most honest manufacturer in golf 👍🏻
