The week before the movie came out, one of my aunts passed away suddenly. Growing up we were poor but every Christmas, she gave us Barbie stuff. We had so many Barbies, the Dream House with all the furniture, and more doll clothes and shoes than we had for ourselves! My sister and I went to see it and were floored by it because it reminded us of all of that. Can't say how much more meaning it gave the movie for us ❤

You should watch it. This is not a just a girl movie about girl toys, it is actually a movie about humanity. And it is a movie that everyone should watch, because everyone is a human. It is very educational, and it tackles really deep life issues, but in a way that is still fun and entertaining. It is overall a really well done movie. And ironically enough, despite the fact it is supposed to be about Barbie, Ryan Gosling totally steels the show! However, it is a show that contains topics that are very triggering for many people. Because it does shed light on mass human oppression, as well as the harm that human oppression is actively causing in today’s society. This can be very emotionally triggering both for people who are victims of human oppression and for people who benefit from human oppression,(whether they are aware or not), or both. Most people who watch the movie see it as validating and eye opening, which feels very freeing, but there are a fair amount of people who become very angered, insulted, or who feel very threatened by it. Honestly, it is a good idea to watch this movie just to see which category you fall into. Because this can be a good way to learn about yourself. You can learn if you currently a part of the problem (which you probably don’t know that you are). And if you realize you are a part of the problem, but you don’t want to be, this is a also good thing. You don’t have to be part of the problem, you can and should become part of the solution. You just can’t do this if you aren’t aware of the problem. So if this movie does trigger you in a way that makes you feel angered, threatened, blamed or if it makes you feel a desire to exert control over others or punish others, than this is a sign that you need to learn more. It is not your fault that you feel this way, and it does not make you a bad person to feel this way, even if it feels bad. This does mean that you need to work on seeing people for their full humanity.

I was cynical about the concept as well. Watched it on MAX and it's way better than I imagined. There's some deep thoughts that come up.

I loved America since Superstore where you get to see how progressive and caring she truly is. Incidentally I watched 'Dumb Money' yesterday (the GameStop stock story, AWESOME movie btw).. America in it is absolutely amazing and again her true character shines brightly through. You always feel she's one of us, the global downtrodden and oppressed!

Now I really want to see Barbie. I haven't been in a theater in years, and I really blew Barbie off as fluff. Because lots of trailers, not able to engage with the cast, it was awfully pink. I will be learning America's monologue. It's awesome!

It's going to take me the rest of my natural life and at least 20 years beyond that for me to wrap my mind around the fact that the corporate Juggernaut that is Mattel was on board with this *very* revolutionary project.
I swear, it's like they know that the end of their era is coming, and they've got zero fucks left to give!
