Happiness is TK Friday! You explained the difference between the masks in the TK panel in an easy to understand and follow. I now understand these masks significantly better after watching this. You are a wonderful teacher and all your tutorials are awesome. Thanks Dave!!!
Going back to the basics like this is good and bad for me. It makes me feel how dumb I've been for so long and happy that you showed me how to be less dumb in the future.
This was a great workshop, Mr. Kelly. The tip regarding to Saturation mask was a must. Thanks for, as always, share your knowledge. Best regards from Rio de Janeiro/Brazil.
Thanks Dave. This was just perfect. You really clarified when to use the specific mask type. I now have a much better understanding. I had never made use of the Vibrance/Saturation mask. That will change thanks to this lesson. TK8 Masking Workshop Notes (Feel free to share) Luminosity Mask Targets a specific starting tonal range for building a mask. Use when wanting to select the lightest lights, darkest darks. Also used for mid-tones masking. This excludes lightest lights and darkest darks. Best used for global tonal balance (mids-3) at the start of the editing process. This will protect you from any clipping. Can make use of rgb or colour channels to isolate the masks. Need to use Levels in order to lighten and tighten. Zone Mask Targets a specific tonal range (0-10) for building a mask. Use for zones 2 through 8. Otherwise, use a luminosity mask instead. Able to easily lighten and tighten the mask with this tool. Colour Mask Targets a specific colour range for building a mask. Sliders are available in order to isolate the colour range that is being selected for the mask. Vibrance Mask Targets weeker tones that need a colour boost for building a mask. Ranges 3-4 are typically your best choice. Lightest areas of the mask are the least saturated areas of the image. Darkest areas of the mask are the most saturated areas of the image. Output to an HSL layer to boost the saturation. Saturation Mask Targets over saturated colours that need to be desaturated for building a mask. Used to desaturate over saturated areas of an image. Lightest areas of the mask are the most saturated areas of the image. Darkest areas of the mask are the least saturated areas of the image. Best to output to a separate layer and paint on the saturation. Click on Hamburger Icon Click on Paint Brush with red & gray background Icon Generates a blank pixel layer with a saturation blend mode Brushes will be defaulted to gray and red (start at 20% opacity) Use X key to switch between gray and red Gray - will decrease saturation Red - will increase saturation
Gracais Dave, muy bien explicado y conciso todas las funciones de mascaras. Como siempre esperando los vienes. Gracias a ti exprimo al maximo el panel TK8. un saludo
One other comnent. For years, I was doing this with a darken layer and going in to darken the areas. Isolated the exact area is a godsend thru luminosity masking and your videos make it less complicated to use.
Thanks Dave, The best things for me were the tip about using the zone mask toes what type of mask is best and secondly the saturation mask technique is great and something I was not aware of.
I agree with what's been said here by the viewers. This was another stellar video, Dave. I'd love to see one where you dedicate the whole tutorial to the calculation masks and the different and creative ways of using it. That's one aspect of the panel I'd want to really master. Thanks again!
Thanks for this Dave. This is exactly what I needed to more quickly choose the best TK8 tool to accomplish my vision. Thanks for answering our call. Best photo editing channel on TH-cam imho.
Thank you, Dave for this excellent video! I have always wondered why you used certain masks instead of other masks in you TK Friday videos. This gives me the reasoning and suggests to me how I should proceed in my work flow. In fact, I would say this should be the first of your videos to watch before watching other editing videos.
Hi Dave, another great video tutorial for us all. Thank you. The one thing I missed is the PDF notes. They come in very handy to look back on without having to locate the video and watch it again. I understand that time doesn't always allow these things but if you made any notes it would be handy to have something to refer to in times of forgetfulness. Cheers for now, (Nigel).
This ranks at the top of my favorite TK8 FRIDAY videos Dave. You have provided me very clear and practical advice on the selection and application of the various masks you address. Thank you very much.
Very useful and detailed information, particularly the saturation mask. I appreciate the effort and time you devote to creating these great TK FRIDAY videos.
Hi Dave. I just finished watching your masking workshop and wanted to tell you this was really helpful in understanding your process. Thank you for taking the time to explain the steps you take. I enjoy all of your TK Fridays, and I hope to see many more like this masking workshop. You are the Bob Ross of Photoshop and that is meant as a total Compliment!
Perfect! This is the video I wish I had a few years ago when I first started using the TK panel! Helps develops a solid understanding of all the different mask, the difference between them and when to use each. Another outstanding, informative lesson. Thank you Dave!
I do some pretty advanced masking, but I always get some great tips from even basic intro topics you do. Didn't know about painting saturation out with the grey/red paint brush. Really valuable, and I will be using it.
Thank you so much for the tutorial I am going to watch it many times, by the way I spotted the Before After in my Action panel , can you please tell us how to do it? thank you
Hi Dave: Thank you so much for creating and sharing this video. Your explanation on when to use the Zone Mask vs. Luminosity Mask techniques was really eye-opening. I rarely used the Vibrance/Saturation Masks before but I now feel much more confident on when to use them. Cheers, Keith
Thank you Dave for a great Masking Workshop. Although you have covered 99% of the video in your TX Friday sessions for me, it was really useful, and reinforced the power of the Panel. Another very informative TX Friday and I hope you produce one on the calculated masks. As always - thanks!
Thank you Dave. Is there a way to view the saturation mask when using the grey/red saturation brush? It would be helpful to e to see areas where I overdid saturtion or desaturation. My eye is not as keen as yours. Thanks
Can i ask a general question ❓ Is the TK plugin good for masking hair or some specific clothes with a lot of holes or shapes? And if it's ok and you have any tutorial about that please give me a link , i can send you some photos for you to understand my question better if i have your email . Thank you so much Dear David for all of your great and helpful videos You are amazing my friend .
The TK8 Plugin combined with Photoshop's Selection tools should get the job done. If you would like please send me some image. Here is my Contact LINK: edenbridgephotography.com/contact
Hello Dave, thank you so much, this is useful because it was a bit confusing vs some notions as "Zone System" confusing with zone masking and also luminosity masking using a color picker witch could let me think that it was a "color" luminosity. Now everything is clear to me, tanks one more time.
