HOW DO YOU SLEEP?
So Sgt. Pepper took you by surprise
You better see right through that mother’s eyes
Those freaks was right when they said you was dead
The one mistake you made was in your head
Tell me... How do you sleep?
Tell me... How do you sleep at night?
You live with straights who tell you you was king
Jump when your Momma tell you anything
The only thing you done was yesterday
And since you’ve gone you’re just another day
Tell me... How do you sleep at night?
Tell me babe... How do you sleep at night?
You was king...
Whoah... How do you sleep at night?
Whoah... How do you sleep at night?
A pretty face may last a year or two
But pretty soon they’ll see what you can do
The sound you make is muzak to my ears
You must have learned something in all those years
Oh... How do you sleep, brother?
Ohh... Tell me how do you sleep at night?
Hit it!
Jump when your momma tell you anything
But pretty soon you’ll see what you can do
Ohh... How do you sleep at night?
Tell me... How do you sleep at night?
Tell me... How do you sleep at night?

No reverb or echo, no effects, no strings, just live, unvarnished and raw. Available in stereo and exclusively in 5.1 Surround Sound in The Ultimate Collection Box Set.
Imagine you are at the Lennon’s home, Tittenhurst Park in Ascot, England. It's night. It's the last week in May in 1971 and you are their special guest, sat in a chair in the very center of the their recording studio, Ascot Sound Studios. John Lennon is sat in front of you, teaching the musicians one of his latest compositions. He is talking and singing and playing the same wood-finish Epiphone Casino electric guitar he played on 'Revolution'. A bearded George Harrison is in front of you, to the right, playing electric slide on John's pale blue Fender Strat. Just behind you and to your right, Rod Lynton with Ted Turner from Wishbone Ash are strumming chords on twelve string acoustic guitars, and directly behind you to the right, John and George's old friend Klaus Voormann is playing his deep hand-painted Fender Precision bass. Behind you to the left, Alan White (who would later join Yes) is playing his Ludwig silver sparkle drumkit, and in front of you to the left, John Tout from Renaissance is playing chords on the Steinway upright piano, and to his right, Nicky Hopkins is improvising on the red-top Wurlitzer Electric Piano, literally days before he leaves for Nellcôte to play on Exile on Main Street with The Rolling Stones. You are listening to the band playing 'How Do You Sleep' and all the hairs are standing up on your arms.

About ‘How Do You Sleep?’ by John & Yoko
excerpted from the 120 page book in the Imagine Ultimate Collection Box Set
John: Somebody said the other day ‘It’s about me’. You know, there’s two things I regret. One is that there was so much talk about Paul on it, they missed the song. It was a good track. And I should’ve kept me mouth shut - not on the song, it could’ve been about anybody, you know? And when you look at them back, Dylan said it about his stuff, you know, most of it’s about him. The only thing that matters is how he and I feel about those things and not what the writer or the commentator thinks about it, you know? Him and me are OK. So I don’t care what they say about that, you know? I’ve always been a little, you know, loose. And I hope it’ll change because I’m fed up of waking up in the papers. But if it doesn’t, my friends are my friends whatever way.

Oh George was fully in on the hit

@@valvortexx5628 shut up
Even after breaking up, The Beatles were still ahead of their time with Paul making a subtle diss and John making a full diss track.
and here I thought hip hop/rappers started this whole diss track genre
George's touch on the slide is impeccable.
George was the main selling point of the Beatles as he had an encyclopedic knowledge of American guitar idioms. But for him John and Paul would be just another brill bld songwriting duo.
There was no one quite like him. It's difficult to "classify" this musician. He came from VERY humble roots, so it's no surprise that he uses restraint when he plays, which makes his music that much more enjoyable. I always thought of him as the "cherry on sundae." Just made it all complete and all worth the enjoyment.
Most people know that Ringo visited the recording of "How Do You Sleep".At one point he said:"That's enough John!"Ringo persuaded John to delete a few really nasty lines.Thank you Ringo!
And this is a guy that wants "PEACE" for the world? John was full of inconsistencies!

@Frank:
They all withered and died after the divorce. Each had a few good albums left in them. After, it was all pretty much shite.
Paul: Subtle references in ram
John: "THE ONLY THING YOU DONE WAS YESTERDAY"
They may been subtle but they were nasty and John knew what he meant. Paul knew John would get it and he knew the lyrics would be unnoticed by the general public. Paul’s a sneaky fucker.😎
next line references "Another Day" from ram although i don't really know if it was on purpose because there's a lot of past referred in the song and how Paul has changed
Well to me, I've always looked it as their two different songwriting techniques, John was straight to the point and Paul would include metaphors and be subtle. Like obviously not for all the songs they've written but like that's what I've noticed from most of their catalogue. Imo Paul's way is better, it makes his songs more relatable, it can give the lyrics he's saying different meanings to the listener, making it easier for it to have secret meanings. Like I say thats just my opinion but yeah I would say Paul's subtle references are way better than John's straight to the point, you want to show the listener what you're feeling, not tell them, this is exactly what Paul did. Even John regretted being straight to the point in this song saying that he shouldn't of used it as a song all about Paul because it the would make a really good song without all the references
I read somewhere that the next line was originally “you probably lifted that one anyway” but was thought too litigious.
It sort of comes down to which album you prefer: Rubber Soul or Revolver.
"Imagine all the people Livin' life in peace"
"Those Freaks were right when they said you was dead"

To hear George's slide is priceless.
The funny thing is that if someone else said something like that about Paul, John would surely smash that man's head.
Indeed, it’s been confirmed by several sources close to the band that John didn’t let anyone say a bad word about Paul. Only he could do it. I recently watched the Imagine documentary, and found one scene particularly amusing. I don’t remember exactly how it went. John was mentioning something about Paul’s records, Phil Spector went: “But who wants to make Paul’s records?” and John, obviously annoyed at the comment, said something like: “But you know what I mean, it was just an example!”. Considering this song, he could’ve joined the trashing, but instead found himself annoyed and chose to cut the conversation off. Very telling.
He always loved Paul’s music, by the way. He talked a lot of shit, but his closest ones have revealed that he had people get all the records for him. He would listen to them with Yoko and either cry or smile through comments like: “There you are!”. He interpreted several loving songs as direct messages to himself. His diaries also show that he nearly obsessed over Paul throughout his life. They loved each other deeply but let their pride get in the way. None of them dared admitting the love explicitly to each other’s faces, and they were both too hurt to give in completely.
John was very protective of the Beatles as a whole and would defend them when other people would try to diss them..he said in an interview that he felt like a parent and would fiercely defend the Beatles especially when someone like Mick Jagger made some comments about the Beatles..John said I can knock the Beatles but not Mick Jagger..I think with Paul, they felt like brothers and brothers fight sometimes but Linda said one time that there’s a love between those two that no one will ever know how deep it runs..except those two.
So much ego by both of them, specially John
@@Nerkin610 John and Paul were mates since high school - and co-wrote since then. Take a look at the Sing-along segment with James Cordon and Paul McCartney - they go to Paul's childhood home - and Paul shows the piano where they'd sit and write - it's very revealing. These guys we're in each others deepest thoughts - to write songs together. So, John knew what Paul was capable of doing - but was frustrated when Paul would not do what he was capable of doing. Many of Paul's songs - including Beatles and after Beatles, are really combination of multiple songs - Paul just writes portions of songs and slams them together. Listen to any early PM solo songs "Jet", etc - they're just different partial songs put together.

John Lennon’s voice is a musical instrument
it even has a bit of overdrive...
Not to be dick, but the voice IS a musical instrument. Lennon had a nuclear bomb in his windpipe - and a Stradivarius.
One of my favorite Lennon voices is the chorus to "This Boy". From hushed harmony to full "overdrive" as suggested below. He imbued what are just pop lyrics with "deep conviction". His voice pulled any pop song along convincingly with signature Lennon emotion whether it's vague irony in "Norwegian Wood", or belting sexuality in "Twist and Shout".
I never cared to much what kind of "person" he was but will always wonder where he came up with those ideas for writing and singing.
Then Yoko's voice is a disaster
If Jonh lennon's voice can be a musical instrument, then mayonnaise can too!
For maximum troll points John should have credited the song to “Lennon/McCartney” 🤣
So true! ;o)
hahaha
Holy shit haha damn
Problem
Then Paul will have a royalty
Klaus and George, along with Alan White and Nicky Hopkins. Pretty nice little unit John put together there. Alan White was virtually unknown when Lennon got a hold of him
Alan White played drums for the band YES too replacing Bill Bruford.
People forget it was actually Paul who fired first shots on his first solo album.. it was just john who responded with overwhelming firepower
Yeah, I think "Too Many People" is a much better song. It was tuneful and enjoyable. This is just mean and hateful. It's revolting.
2nd solo album*
i don't think paul really said anything about the other beatles on mccartney? Except for how lonely they'd been, i guess.
@@jmarty1000 I think too many people is a poor song, and the jabs at John and yoko uncalled for and sly. John's how do you sleep is funky, groovy and musically brilliant and typically John pulls no punches, that's not jl"s style
@@jmarty1000isagree. This is a much better song. Completely uncalled for too. This was groovy af
@@jmarty1000 pues si pues, asi consume la miseria de las amistades.
John: how do you sleep?
Paul: TEMPORARYY SECRETARYYY

I Can Only Sleep When I Listen to Temporary Secretary
lol
Imagine if Twitter was around back then? Paul and John full out twitter war
Paul would only reply in gifs
I'm gonna grab my popcorn 🍿😐
Dude that would be a hilarious meme to make parody twitter accounts of Paul & John's twitter war lol
Gallagher brothers be like:
Oh you know it! But they did have alot of fun each writing his own songs knocking the other. They became very competitive.
George was a natural at the slide. So spot on it really is uncanny. Adds a great texture to the music.
Love this song. Especially how the slow, laid-back groove of the music belies the savagery of the lyrics.
Great music, not a big fan of the lyrics personally.
George was there only to get back at Yoko by eating her biscuits
the bitch stole my biscuits
He was there only for John...
I get it
George's solo is one of the most underrated slide guitar solos of all time
His solo on Gimme some truth tops this by a fair bit, could listen to that on continuous loop for hours on end.
What makes you believe it's underrated?
It's arguably his best... even John Said that it was George's best slide guitar solo and he laughed when George wanted to take one more take(John said "are you joking")...
Yes...George's guitaring is so good in this song. Pity this is not one of the "popular" songs. Would have loved George to have got much more recognition for his work here.
The word underrated is banned from TH-cam. You didnt know?
What a great song brilliantly played by everyone. George's slide is sublime. Klaus's base is perfect blues line. John later said he regretted the association with Paul and wished more people saw it as just a great song. It was.
I think that's exactly how most listen to it, nowadays. So his later wishes possibly actualised.
@@Leo_nbd Nice!
Like most every Lennon song, it was introspective. But the devil on his shoulder that he was resisting was Paul. Or, rather, what Paul represented to him.
The good thing was that they both became friends again before John died
Nothing more than excuses! He saw how negative the responses was of him , klein bad mouthing Paul and his music and came out with this bs!
Crazy to think that Klaus Voorman and Yoko (who was almost 40 when this was filmed) are the only people in this who're still with us today.
Klaus looks as a mug in this too. All laid back. Good bloke he is.
yes, even Spector who appears in the background ...
Kinda crazy that she's 88
Yoko and who’re in the same sentence 😆
@@harold3165 and she is still a hot babe
George's slide is so subtle and magnificent on this track.
I want someone to caress me the way George carresses his guitar.
it takes alot of years and losing whats important oftern, for us men to learn selfless love,,its our children that can teach us that (you girls have it more naturally) but hay your a pretty lady,im sure there would be a Q To hold you
❤️❤️
George is a great womaniser
@@lepetitchat123 😂😂he flirted with maureen while married to pattie boyd
Where do you live ?
Unironically this song makes me sleep better XD
I love the guitar work from John an George, it just shows how good they were in their own way, John keeps such a great groove which is what made him such a good backing guitarist for the Beatles, and George just follows that with a lead guitar that serves the song perfectly
rip george and john
If Klaus gets anymore relaxed he may just fall asleep.
Is that the drummer?
@@cesar-fr5hj Bass player.
Ja, any more stoned and i'll take over the bass :)
Klaus was a cool kraut. We Love You KLAUS
@@graemeknox1275 He looks completely wacked out here. I'm surprised he got through it.
John said this was a lash out that he eventually realized was really about himself.
I find it so awesome that it was actually john who first played slide guitar in one of George's songs (for you blue - let it be) , and this was almost like george returning the favour which in turn gave us such an awesome slide guitar sound!!❤❤
🎶🎶“go johnny go”🎶🎶
George is the most gently guitar in a all rock music
Peter Green
@Kevin Oscar Clapton
Just hear it weep
A Lonely Lizard Ha, nice.
Loved Paul's response when hearing the track. " Very well thank You. "
🤣🤣😊
Where do u see that response? Its recorded?
John: th-cam.com/video/FoJQAyrUHhA/w-d-xo.html
Paul: th-cam.com/video/kWFehaQEMYI/w-d-xo.html
Faul's response.
Paul's a punk.
Super canción, al puro estilo de Lennon, cruda, real y directa. Siempre habló sin tapujos.
Y George Harrison también se lo dijo pero con su slide.
John Lennon: Imagine all the people living life in peace
Also John Lennon: makes a song trashing his former best friend on the same album
Paul did it first tho
It was a reply to Paul's song Too Many People. It's just a song. Shouldn't affect you so much. They got over it probably before you were born!
Same album too
The poison was in the video.
One of the things I love most about the Beatles is they so fully captured the spirit of being human in their music. A song about peace followed by a dis track is so freaking human.
The original diss track, John is dropping some bombs over here
I think Too Many People by Paul came first
The poetry of ancient Arabia came first
He was singing about Faul, not Paul, ergo beginning with Pepper. John was a genius and would never have dissed his best friend so he made it about Faul as clear as he could without giving it away and being clipped even earlier than he was.
Jerry Foster It did.
@@veritasinvicta8128 he was know to imitate people with down syndrome, so i don't see why dissing his former friend would be such a suprise
every second of this song is gold
How George coyuld play that and hold a straight face without laughing his ass off is beyond me
He was just a bitter moron. I don't think there was much humor in him when he was singing this shit.
why would he be laughing lol
I'm with you. What would be funny to Harrison?
@@TheClimberbob1 Maybe he was referring to this track dissing Paul?
@@natehunt3415 I think that's the case. xx
My man Klaus just sitting there with his bass playing with 2 beatles
ALL you need is Klaus. Having Paul join on this one: That would be something, really sould be something....!
Klaus knew the Beatles even before they were famous from their time in Hamburg, Germany.
PassCookie Everybody else got mansions but Klaus and Pete.
@@nicoliro Was where?...
Ringo wasn't on this song but he remained indifferent towards Paul. He didn't want the drama. It was everyone against Paul except Ringo because Ringo was friendly with everyone.
Like all families, the Beatles would argue, piss each other off, be nasty to each other. At the end of the day, they loved each other more than anything.
@James Fehr Come on, James. All you need is love. Oh, and how do you sleep at night making a comment like that?
Absolutely! Thank you for seeing that. They would just go to very childish extremes.
@James Fehr if thats how you think, then that will become your reality. Those were the goals they wished for all earthlings, but dont forget they were human too. As long as anyone is human they are bound to make mistakes even contrary to their philosophical ideals. You become a better man to take responsibility for those mistakes, apologise and resolve to do better the next time. No one's perfect, we are a work in progress, our Creator is not done with us yet. "You may think I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
This 'raw' recording legit sounds quite a lot better than the album version
I only just clicked thats why george gives such amazing guitar work on this track he's giving McCartney the middle finger as well
Lennon's killing the vocal here..great natural overdriven distortion. Genius
He really is. That raspy tone is really great.
i prefer his vocals in this versus the released version sounds more natural
John nailed it, when he wrote that to Paul. He sued the other Beatles when they broke up. We have Alan White on drums, later he played with the group called YES. They were a progressive rock band
"only thing you done, was yesterday" shits on point yo....
George Harrison slide playing is hypnotic. Amazing video
John : "Pretty face last a year or two, soon people will see what you can do"

Almost, the bass on the album version is so desirable. So thick and punchy.
Yeah, love George's slide guitar on this version
@@toma411 Forgot that as well. Love how it's all the way through. How it should of been.
Omg yes. George just MAKES this version.
You’re right. John’s voice is much better fitting here, sounds so angry and pure
Everybody should write a blistering song to their best friend. I'm sure it would be very cathartic.
Great guitar from George.
There's a band from my home country (new zealand) called the Doublejumps, you should check them out. It's like The Beatles music
