I do have one question about this gun which, I have to say, seems very cool. I'm not a gun fan but I have to say I'm thinking of getting one (yes I heard you mention this device is not a gun). As I watched through the video I got the impression from the way you loaded and reload the device that the method for doing this is not practical and may be unsafe if an unintended discharge occurs. Did you get that impression during your testing? It seems to me that the designer of the gun should have made the arrow top loading (rather than barrel loading). My idea is that pulling back the bolt should have chambered the arrow from the top (Kinda like how a pump action shotgun chambers the shot gun shell from the bottom). I'm no engineer so maybe this doesn't make sense mechanically but I thought I should ask.
It;s my understanding that in many jurisdictions the over-the-barrel loading is necessary to get around the "firearm" definition or other statutes, thereby technically making it a "toy".. also, as far as safety goes, I think the safety engages after each shot. Even if not, it must be cocked. So as long as you're not horribly negligent there shouldn't be any danger in the loading process
How does this mechanism you proposed work? This gun works because it fires special hollow shaft arrows which fit over the barrel which is another hollow tube, and when firing the air from the barrel pushes on the inside of the arrow and the arrow glides over the barrel as a result. This means that the arrow must be muzzle loaded. A pump action shotgun is breech loaded, which means there is a chamber (or special compartment) behind the barrel that opens and the shotgun shell is loaded into the chamber. This improves the loading speed as there is no need to bring the shell all the way to the front of the barrel to load it. But this only makes sense if the projectile length is short relative to the barrel length. If a breech loading arrow air gun is to be made, the length of the chamber will be the same length as the barrel, which is extremely bulky (ignoring the fact that the structure of the arrow with its vanes means it CANNOT be fired through any circular barrel). Also the point of the over-barrel firing mechanism is to circumvent laws and regulations against projectiles which travel through a barrel. The only way to achieve a top loading mechanism with this is to have the "breech" on the arrow itself, which means the arrow is hollow with a "door" along almost the entire length of the shaft which allows it to fit over the barrel, before being closed around the barrel prior to firing. The need to ensure the strength of this opening means the arrow will be unnecessarily heavy, which means it cannot be fired at any decent velocity at all. Increasing the power of the air means the seal must be reinforced further, which further increases weight.
@@Sharklops Thanks for the help. Sounds like I shouldn't worry about getting one of these toys. Speaking of toys, I kinda wonder if our long-distant ancestors would look at this device as a toy. Best bet would be, "Maybe; but, not if they were on the receiving end".
Based on Skall's demonstration, this airgun is single shot only, this means that you have to re-cock it after every shot, it's not a repeater of any kind. So, there's no danger in muzzle loading because there's no air in the firing chamber, just in the C02 cartridge; I'm guessing that each pull of the charging handle only allows in enough air for 1 shot. In addition to having charge it after every shot, there's also a safety on it and it wouldn't surprise me if the safety automatically engages after every shot, further reducing the likelihood that you will accidentally shot yourself when (re)loading.

My favorite to buy when I actually hunt, is the 12g cartridges. You almost Never actually use all the air in the larger ones. I also get more power it seems out of the 12g singles over the double 12g adapter. One only hears stories of ppl getting 360 fps, but have yet to see it on any channel. This thing seems to stick close to 290-305 fps. It's far quieter than a 22cal gun. With a scope, I literally Robinhood every arrow at 90feet. Crossbows you have to have a disability permit to use hunting. Airbows are counted as Bows, and need just a normal archery tag. You can also shoot fish all day long at any lake as long as you have the string attached to the arrows and the safety stops installed on the arrows. Shooting them indoors amplifies the sound Much louder than outdoors. I can tell you for a fact this thing is a pig killer. With 50gr broadhead, it blows through both sides of a pig breaking ribs. In the right hands it could take a White Tail deer, and even "maybe" a Mule deer. I personally wouldnt go for deer with it. Even though the math says it can, it's arrows are lighter than regular bows, and may not have the umph to cut deep enough.
How big of a hog are you talking because if it's if it's going through two hundred pound even in 150 lb hog you're taking down a doe or a buck with a lung shot yeah probably doesn't have to momentum to get through the shoulder blade to get a heart shot but if it's passing through a hog it's passing through a deer
With liquid CO2 in the tank it should keep the same pressure at any given temperature until all the liquid is used up. The slow decrease in performance is probably because the little tank is getting cold due to gas expansion. Give it a few minutes to warm up and you'll get your power back.
I was wondering if you would mind firing through sheet rock and perhaps some insulation? The idea is if you are in your home and someone comes in uninvited and you are forced to fire but for whatever reason you miss and hit a wall what I want to know is will it pass through fast enough to hurt anyone on the other side
Since you've already done a video on Shardblades, it would be cool if you did a video analysing the stances from the Stormlight Archive, (Windstance, Smokestance, etc.)
i got an adapter for 88g canisters that umerex has. it allows you to remove the tank and saves the air. it is a money saver and allows one to remove tank for storing gun
Skall you should test this again in the summer, from what i experienced with Co2-Airsoft, the power and amount of shots to get out of the Co2-cartrige can vary a lot depending on temperatur.
One point I see in its favor for the hunting use case is the more streamlined shape. No bow limbs to get caught on brush as you're trudging through the woods.
The Slingshot Channel showcased a "crossbow" (relies on elastic potential energy using special springs) with the "bow" inline with the profile of the weapon, which prevents it from getting caught in brush as well. The problem is that it is expensive and is much harder (I say impossible but never underestimate the Slingshot Channel) to simplify the loading process due to its design but it is more consistent than this in terms of shot consistency
Could it be that not only the lighting conditions were effecting the chronograph, but also the expanding cloud that wafts over the chronograph aswell due to the expanding gasses?
Thank You for review my Canadian Brother,it's a nice gimmick and works.Stick with the Real Crossbow or a Bow,but this is good alternative for people who don't have enough power to draw the string and I might consider one myself and trade other ones away...
That’s pretty cool. I didn’t even know these existed. Thanks Skall! I’m interested to see how the valve functions. Co2 valves are easy to modify. More power is more gooder with arrows right?
Mmm mmm mm i truly like this weapon. Im usually more of a knife guy (i have no idea why) but crossbows has always been a favorite for range (except throwing axes) and this beauty has made my top 10 on ranged. Can't wait to try it out for myself. I don't hunt but im curious on how this one is compared to a hunting rifle. Im going to google on it and learn something new. Also would it work well in a post apolalyptic world? What would be the pros and cons?
I think range, noise and accuracy are more important than cost. Bolt throwers aren't really something you can do a straight comparison between an air gun or crossbow. A crossbow has a disadvantage of being big and heavy and slow to reload. Air arrows or bolt throwers are great in confined spaces or for those who might have a disability but still want to hunt or shoot arrows. One glaring issue I can see with this is that the guide barrel doesn't extend past the stock making it hard to reload. The shell and grip look cheap and flimsy. I would rather see a wooden or aluminium stock and the ability to swap out the grip. You could slap a silicone sleeve on the grip I guess but it would be nice to see some customisation options in the basic design. Skall can the charging handle be swapped over to the right or is this a righty only gun?
I wonder if you could put a compressed air tank on it. They made basically mini scuba tanks for paintball guns. Reusable and cheap to fill (or free if you have access to a fire station scba filler😅).
Thanks for doing a great review! I kind of want to call this type of weapon an Air-Bow, but whatever... CO2 is a refrigerant gas, and the pressures drop as you shoot, and the colder it gets. Rapid shots will consistently drop in velocity, so if you pause for a couple minutes between shots to allow the CO2 cannister to warm up, you should get more consistent shot velocity results. If you shoot a CO2 gun on a hot 80+ degree summer day, you will get the highest shot velocity results that the gun is capable of. I recently purchased an Air Javelin, but I live in southern Ontario where "zero discharge" By-laws have outlawed Fun, and hope to find a legal place to try it out soon.
Have you tried FX Airguns? They are like those but the FX seem to be superior in quality and don't need Co2. You can even refill them with a specialized hand pump.
Massive difference between this and a 22cal. Literally only as loud as most decent pellet riffles. Indoors can't hear someone shooting it in the backyard. However, indoors or shooting it in the garage will magnify the sound of the shot considerably.
First obvius thing to do is to connect small refillable co2 paintball tank or better - hpa tank. CO2 is cheap - 12g and 88g cartriges are expensive. If You chose hpa way, You can buy high pressure hand pump or refill bottle in scuba center or on paintball field. If You have friendly local firestation they can help too.
The 12g adapter is good.... if you just wanna fire off a dozen shots without breaking the bank.... I might get 10 shots go into the target bag.... last ones bounce off due to the pressure drops
If there was a green gas or compressed air version with an internal tank would it lose power? Because personally I don't really like co2 powered things in general for a number of reasons
For hunting purposes it would count as a firearm, the rule (at least where I am) is "if it has a trigger it's a gun" which includes standard crossbows. But for other legal purposes it would probably count as a grey area between bow and pellet gun
Just a random idea: maybe giving a whistle blow (or some noise like that) before the shot would note the neighbors that it's controlled practice/sport/test shooting?
My only issue with this is loading. Using target arrows is fine. But what happens to your fingers when you start running broadhead meant for hunting? Or is this just a toy and not meant for hunting?
Hunting would be one Capsule per tried shot since every animal would run if you miss causing you to wait for the next one while the capsule drains slowly and if you find a new target the bolt falls of halfway

@@asasasas-tt9zj I see. Interesting knowledge to have. Not sure what that has to do with me though
@@mingyi456 I think I understand what you are saying C.M. Thank you for your help.
Air Venturi makes a refillable 90 Gram CO2 cylinder that fills off of a larger paintball gun tank, this would bring the cost to shoot down greatly

are bow strings cheaper than the specified co2 canisters?
Yeah, but would you really consider a bit of string wax a significant upkeep cost? I wouldn't count oil as upkeep cost for swords either. :)

Released compressed gases can be very load…Especially while indoors. Looks fun.
It looks like a sci fi laser rifle yet it's firing the most primitive of ammo types.
That's ironic huh.
Bow sides of a hog, but not deep enough for a deer?
How big of a hog are you talking because if it's if it's going through two hundred pound even in 150 lb hog you're taking down a doe or a buck with a lung shot yeah probably doesn't have to momentum to get through the shoulder blade to get a heart shot but if it's passing through a hog it's passing through a deer
"45 shots in a raw, nobody got time to sit through that", how disappointing, you clearly underestimate your audience :|

I’m surprised they didn’t design it with embellishments that make it look more like a crossbow. I think they made the right choice. This looks cool.
after watching The Slingshot Channel for years, I already have an idea about how strong this weapon probably is
With liquid CO2 in the tank it should keep the same pressure at any given temperature until all the liquid is used up.
"watch me screw my thing" fucking lost it after he made a weird face xD
Since you've already done a video on Shardblades, it would be cool if you did a video analysing the stances from the Stormlight Archive, (Windstance, Smokestance, etc.)
i got an adapter for 88g canisters that umerex has. it allows you to remove the tank and saves the air. it is a money saver and allows one to remove tank for storing gun
Yo first 60 seconds got me invested your attitude killed me so hilarious well done sir glad to be a new subscriber.
Based on your measurents and the weight of the arrows given by umarex the launcher has a muzzle velocity of about 32 Joules or 23 ft/lbf
In Canada, it's not a firearm because the velocity is below 500fps (and the muzzle energy is below X joules, but I can't remember what the limit is)
Skall you should test this again in the summer, from what i experienced with Co2-Airsoft, the power and amount of shots to get out of the Co2-cartrige can vary a lot depending on temperatur.
One point I see in its favor for the hunting use case is the more streamlined shape. No bow limbs to get caught on brush as you're trudging through the woods.
you dont have to worry about bow limbs when hunting in a place with low foliage.
I wouldn't modify this without a ton of research but if you do please post the video lmao
I am betting that all the internals are brass, which gives you an upper pressure limit you can run with.
You can store it with the 88g cylinders, just make sure there is plenty of silicone oil or grease on the seal.
I'm wondering if the intial lighting was too low frequency for the chronograph.
Massive difference between this and a 22cal. Literally only as loud as most decent pellet riffles. Indoors can't hear someone shooting it in the backyard. However, indoors or shooting it in the garage will magnify the sound of the shot considerably.

Yes. Yes you are. And I love it.
its nice he can have a laugh with himself too,it makes the video more relaxed and personal
you can get decibel aps for phones if you want to check relative loudness.
Suitable for hunting small game? Like, say, some small, miniaturized vampires? How much joules of muzzle energy it got at these fps?
Would be cool if this had a hand pump like the FX Indy. Perfect survival setup.
I wonder if you can increase the co2 pressure by putting a low heat on the canister? That might be dangerous though.
Looks like a weapon from the first Xcom; Ufo Defence (Or UFO; Enemy unknown). Especially when he held it straight out with one hand...
If you let the co2 warm back up between shots it'll drastically improve the fps
First obvius thing to do is to connect small refillable co2 paintball tank or better - hpa tank. CO2 is cheap - 12g and 88g cartriges are expensive. If You chose hpa way, You can buy high pressure hand pump or refill bottle in scuba center or on paintball field. If You have friendly local firestation they can help too.
I would have liked seeing how it compares to your crossbows in terms of range and depth into a target.
If u can get a silencer for that it would be a good replacement for the crossbow
It looks interesting and also kind of fun to shoot.
Very cool video / weapon.
Thank you Sir great video, content, clarity, explanations, & demo
Think some day they will make a packpack type tank for extended usage?
I have a question, do you think it would be possible to use a longsword to parry a strike from a bullwhip?
