  • Reporters Without Borders has cautioned of declining state support for press freedom around the world. The group released its 2024 World Press Freedom rankings, showing a mild improvement in press freedom in Germany. Norway retained its top position on the RSF index, but the group highlighted that the country had also seen a fall in its political score. Eritrea ranked lowest, taking over from North Korea which was in the last position in 2023. Afghanistan fell 26 places to 178th, Togo went down by 43 to 113th and Ecuador was ranked 110th after slipping down 30 places. The 13 highest-ranked nations where were all in Europe, with Norway followed by Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Portugal, Ireland, Switzerland and Germany rounding out the top 10. Germany moved up to the 10th position from 21st last year. Belarus ranks as the worst country for press freedom in Europe.
    DW's Freedom of Speech Award 2024 will go to Yulia Navalnaya and the Russian Anti-Corruption Foundation, Germany's international public broadcaster announced on Friday. Navalnaya is the widow of the late Russian opposition leader - and founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation - Alexei Navalny.The award comes amid a heightened crackdown on Russian journalists. Just days before DW's announcement, Russian police detained journalists Konstantin Gabov, who formerly worked as a correspondent for DW, and Sergei Karelin, a cameraman. Authorities claimed that the arrests were part of combating extremism, accusing them of preparing material for a TH-cam channel linked to Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation. The two journalists had previously worked with DW. However, the charges against them are not connected to their work with the German broadcaster, which is also banned in Russia.

      That has nothing to do with freedom of press. Even if DW or any other media wanted to interview these two, it's up to the authorities that hold them, to allow interviews or not. Free press means DW (German media) and others can say and write whatever they want (as long as it's true). It is not allowed to interview prisoners pending trial because of possible evidence and witness tampering and interference. If Assange were sentenced in Europe, he could give interviews after sentencing. In this case Assange's trial is about extradition to US.

      @@lise1255 free press also means that dw can interview everyone they think important. if one country ban interview from certain people and the news agency obliged and only write something that country want, doesn't mean that the news agency has no credibility to criticize other country press freedom?

      @@MudThought "you guys have no right to talk about freedom of the press" - just to be clear, I am Danish and my country is one of only 4 countries worldwide with an absolute free press (Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Portugal), so I do believe I have a right to talk about freedom of the press. It usually takes two parties to do an interview. Assang is a prisoner and it's therefore up to the authorities that holds him to allow an interview or not. Various foreign news media can't just demand an interview. As mentioned, the rules about not allowing interviews of prisoners BEFORE trial apply to ALL prisoners, not Assange in particular. Assange is NOT a journalist and has never held a press card. The charges are not initially about the publishing but mainly for hacking. So still; NOTHING to do with freedom of the press.

      What does an incarcerated hacker have to do with a free press ranking !!! Obviously nothing, since Assange is not or has ever been a journalist. He has studied programming, math and physics without finishing any of his studies. If a hacker in your mind should enjoy freedom of the press without holding a press card, being a journalist and affiliated with a newspaper, does that make me a journalist because I write this ? Or do you confuse freedom of the press with freedom of speech and disregard the illegal aspect of hacking into others private network?

    I don't get this ranking system. Belarus is 10 spots worse than Palestine and 10 spots better than North Korea. So how many journalists are Belarus killing and torturing compared to the other two countries? I know Belarus is bad for free speech, but are they really on the same level as we say? Even Turkey are little better than Belarus according to this, while Hungary is a lot better. It makes no sense to me from what i know of the nations.

It's not up to media Whether or not they are allowed to interview certain people, but they have the freedom to write whatever they want. But there's really nothing new in Assange's case to write about. Besides you do know DW is German and Assange is imprisoned in London, right?

      @@lise1255 I know there are some people who lost the plot. And think European countries would not have power over each other. Or the US. Or think that it is normal to have a reporter in jail for years fighting an extradition for releasing information deemed secret by non elected officials who will work for 40 years plus in administration. But having a ranking judging press freedom by people hired only from certain countries (check it) that represent a certain ideology and perception of the world, while most coups, large scale conflicts, control, war and censorship in the world since centuries were triggered by these countries (central europe and later america) who are known to have the best psy-ops and secret services, and thinking this is normal and should not be talked about, is sad.
      the biggest deep data leaks for the people of the world are prosecuted just like in a dictatorship right now and not one "democratic" country dares to point out that paradoxon.

    • @lise1255
      @lise1255 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@cwpv2477 First of all Assange didn't have any press credentials, when he revealed what apparently was top secret and therfore obviously can't claim freedom of the press.
      Second, even in the 4 countries, my own incl. (Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Portugal) that has full freedom of the press, there are state secrets that isn't available to the public and is punishable to publish. It's like arguing the concept of "free speech" with an American, that believes it means he can say anything anywhere to anyone. Free speech means you have the right to have and express an opinion and the freedom of press means you can publish it. But it IS restricted to not hurting others or incite violence or cause damage.
      I don't know what Assange revealed, but if he published information that for any reason were classified, he could potentially have caused damage or harm to others. So even with a free press and free speech, it's NOT an absolute and it's not illegal to use common sense.

    • @lise1255
      @lise1255 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@cwpv2477 let's be clear about one thing. I have no opinion on Assange's potential crimes, but he is NOT a reporter. He has NO journalistic education ( or any official at all).
      He is a well-known and good hacker, has studied programming, math and physics apparently without finishing any of his studies. He created Wikileaks on hacked and stolen material.
      But since he is (was) NOT /NEVER a member of the press, he can't claim journalistic immunity. Had he been affiliated with an Australian newsmedia, had a press card and published what he did in their name, - he couldn't be touched. But since he published it on his own platform, WITHOUT press credentials, his situation is much different.
      Personally I hope UK reject the extradition in order of protecting all the people's integrity in the Commonwealth countries. If it were up to the politicians, they would have pampered up to the Americans and handed Assange over. Thankfully we have separation of politics and the judicial system here in Europe, so I hope the UK law will do the right thing. But again, - nothing to do with freedom of press.
