India has had 75 years of peaceful power transitions. Just because Modi is loved by a sizeable population doesn’t make it “democratic backsliding”. There’s a right wing wave across the world. It’s no different in India.
Nobody said it is a problem that a large part of the population likes him. People were just addressing their concerns that for example journalist that writes critical articels are harrassed by the law enforcment agency or that to many position of power are occupied by modi people.
The video flew over most commentators heads. Its not about merely choosing the leaders of your choice. It's about choosing leaders who take away your choices.
The most sensible comment. This comment should be pinned. I see most right wingers getting pressed and commenting here, not able to handle criticism of their beloved autocrat leaders. On the other hand, the DW has covered both left and right wing governments taking control of the democracy. But the funny part it has gone over most brains of most of the right wingers. What DW is trying to say is the seperation of power must be maintained by any government, be it right or left. So that people will have the choice to raise their opinios and revolt or disagree with views and policies instead of getting suppressed.

Secular word was added to the constitution in 1977 during emergency with out much debate. The Deutsche Wllle India Editor is wrong on facts. India is secular because Hindus are in majority, not because it's written in its constitution by a dictator Indira Gandhi during Emergency.
For your kind information, India was secular since its birth, Nehru tried to establish secular values in the government since his first day in the prime minister's office. The secularism was just officially declared by Indira Gandhi. Before that, India did not have any state religion and hence was secular. The Supreme Court has also said this in a verdict. But yes, it is true that India is secular because Hindus are in majority.

Well, it could well be that the western has not anymore the power to give or take freedom, but India is as chained as others to the new emergent powers. Let's say, they are China and Russia (in a minor role). But they are spearheading the new wave of colonization. Depending on what you think freedom is, you can have freedom. However, what you think is freedom is only a nationalistic illusion.

Very sad to see people like u are living in their made-up world. Democracy is not only about elections , its about individual freedom and most important freedom to oppose freely. Modi is also destroying free and fair elections , such as in the case of Chandigarh mayoral poles.
In a democracy they make us speak, but they do what they want and it is convenient for them. The difference with a dictatorship is that this one does not allow us to speak.
Interest is entirely subjective. Atrocities against mankind are not. Through great sacrifices and efforts, international standards have been established to determine what abuses to humanity are considered unacceptable. The western "democracies" presented as protagonists at risk here, have been the prime violators of said standards, and they are now failing to control the narrative to claim otherwise. The perspective of loss is an illusion, these powers are overdue for collapse, and most of mankind will benefit from their fall. DW really demonstrated their U.S. lapdog status here, and have entirely relinquished what little journalistic credibility they had.
Democracy should respect majority choice without name calling such as far right or far left. People should define their destiny and not IMF who lives somewhere far away from the suffering citizenry!
It's not name calling when it's calling things what they are. Far left and far right are inherently non democratic. Which is more than just doing away with voting. Democracy also requires rule of law, institutions thereof, and rights for minorities. Democracy still has to color withing the lines or else it's not democracy anymore.
Main issue is that our selected politicians have failed to serve people, in the west all has become so unaffordable, almost everyone's struggling to make a living, how do you want democracy to survive if people has lost faith?
Look what people in dictatorships have. The people voting for trump here in the US have never lived in a dictatorship and I don’t really believe they know what they’re getting ready to unleash.
Democracy is about people, not leaders. We, as a part of animal kingdom, always search for leaders instead of intellectual development which leads to logic and rational rather than emotional choice.
With PM Modi in India, I love that he has given the youth something to look forward to, to cherish their own culture, and that he has been targeting multidimensional poverty (albeit slowly). But I hate that people here don't care much of the declining independence of the accountability institutions (RTI, Lokpal, etc), the law enforcement agencies (CBI, ED) and BJP's general frustration with Parliament procedures. And I also hate that Congress didn't do things properly that people are ready to give BJP a completely free hand. The way I see, an idealistic way forward could be when BJP respects all good things it has done, but also the important institutions that make India the largest democracy.

A democracy is a marketplace of idea's. It doesn't get weaker, if once side is unable to sell its ideas to the electorate. Or even explain those ideas in language that is understandable to the voters.
Interfering with a free and fair marketplace is exactly what weakens democracy. Voter suppression, insurrection, intimidation, foreign interference. Ideas are fair game, but anti-democratic methods are not.

A strong opposition is the linchpin of a stable democracy. People in power will inevitably try to hold on , sometimes by controlling the narrative by any means at their disposal. A weak opposition makes it possible for them to do that without accountability. The blame for rising autocracies also falls on a fragmented and weak opposition.

Exactly!!!! Look into Liquid [I often get censored if I don't do things like this] Democracy (LD)! I WOULD love to say more (but see my comment in the square brackets for why I can't).
LD (Liquid Democracy) is a form of democracy where you can split and delegate your vote indefinitely, vote directly if and when you want, and update/change your vote(s) virtually whenever you deem it necessary. Note that any one definition you read doesn't need to be the ultimate one; esp. as no country is a LD yet (few representative democracies are exactly alike either). LD addresses one of the greatest problems with current systems of governance which is their inability to properly accept and process feedback from citizens. Which isn't so weird considering existing systems were mostly designed in and for a time when - ignoring smoke signaling and the telegraph - information needed to be transmitted on foot.
World geopolitics changed a lot and almost every country is opting the nationalist, centre right, conservative to led the country like in case of Argentina, India because developing nations are trying to protect their interest but these trend is arising in developed nations too like Italy, finaland , USA (trump) . These shows that people are becoming more protective, inward looking and want to led a secure life intime of uncertainty
According to USA. If you are working according to how USA wants then you are fine whether you are democratic or not. Example is pakistan run by a pakistani military supported by USA and USA relations with middle eastern countries and South American countries run by dictators in the past. At the end of the day or is about what powerful countries like USA,china and Russia and blocks like EU and IMF wants and they justify their actions in the name of right ,wrong ,human rights ,freedom of speech and things like that.
And it might also mean....you need to change some policies/actions ......instead of concentrating all your energy & money trying to destroy your opposituon !
6:40 It's not "unprecedented" at all. Two other Prime Ministers (Nehru and Indira Gandhi) served three terms. If you count India's time as a Dominion of the UK, then Nehru served four terms as Prime Minister. The whole section on India is very poorly researched.
It is kind of depressing when I think about it. Not so many centuries ago, actually quite few centuries ago, people fought and killed other people for the right to vote, to have a say in the question of "who will be in charge". Yet, there are people today who don't think it is important, and skip voting, don't make any small research to find out which candidate will fit best. And it is also mindblowing, how people use one of the freaking results of democracy - right to write anywhere anything(mostly) and they use this opportunity to blame liberalization. Why can't we just separate people geographically, mf's who don't accept democracy - in one territory, and the ones who accept it - in another. Well, 80% of those who didn't like democracy will pray to get back in the first 5 minutes, but still.

A right wing party in Europe is not automatically a threat to democracy. It is part of the democratic process to have an opposition to the current migration policy or the lack of thereof. Just because you don’t like the Liga, AfD or le pen doesn’t mean they are not the expression of the democratic will.
I understand where you're coming from completely. There just comes a point whether these parties on BOTH sides of the political compass are acting truly in the best interest of the people for the long term which is far more important than just the short term. E.g. would you rather short term unsustainable growth which would positively impact people for a small amount time or would you rather a list of policies that enact sustainable long term growth that would impact people positively for the long run? The answer is obvious, just apparently not to voters (once again on both sides) who only have short term interests or who are misinformed. The democratic system needs to be reformed.

Although he achieved financial stability after the 2022 economic crisis and things are now calmed down, the prices are very high and there are lot of protests almost everyday. He is also a bit authoritarian. The communist leader (Anura Kumara Dissanayake) is currently the most popular candidate. They tried to overthrow the government in 1971 and 1989 via armed revolutions, but in both occasions they were unsuccessful. But after the economic crisis in 2022, they are the most popular by far any others. They never had power before, and they are very radical and authoritarian. They are also Pro-Chinese and Anti-American/Anti-Indian. The second most popular candidate is the Social-Conservative one (Sajith Premadasa), but he is a corrupt fool. Once Nixon made peace with the Chinese Communist govt, it all changed. The mainland Chinese-run CCP became "China" globally and the Republic of China became Taiwan. China has specifically said that any changes to Taiwan's constitution or territorial claims will be justification for them to invade. The other aspect of it is that these claims are upheld by the Chinese nationalists who seek to keep Taiwan tethered to their own idea of China which is in stark opposition to the beliefs of a majority of Taiwanese people. Democracy also requires rule of law, institutions thereof, and rights for minorities. Democracy still has to color withing the lines or else it's not democracy anymore.
"Western governments are prepared to give India quite a bit of freedom" the colonial mindset never dies
Main issue is that our selected politicians have failed to serve people, in the west all has become so unaffordable, almost everyone's struggling to make a living, how do you want democracy to survive if people has lost faith?
True. Specially left governments that supposedly should reduce inequalities have shown to being either too inept to do it or not really willing.

Dictatorship doesn't solve them.

Very nicely articulated!
The idea that democracies don't get weaker is a pretty convenient justification for mainstreaming fascism.
Democracy has ran its course for this cycle - and there’s no doubt the world goes through cycles.

Strong, but ethical, opposition who don't revenge when they win and jail the opposing as the Dems are trying to do in my country.
"Big tent" politics like America is ironically the most stable form of democracy, but it looks like we're going to need revisions as corruption is a major issue in America.
Democracy does not mean freedom. Its all about money. The more money you have, the more freedom you have.
Thanks to India, Democracy will survive and thrive!
In Germany you have to pay for the state owned media
You mean tax money? Don't all national broadcaster get tax money?

Yes but that doesn't mean that voters cannot vote in favor of powers that will undermine democracy. This is obviously the point - even if you sometimes need to be generous in you "reading" (which you should be, because otherwise you'll end up constantly needing to have basic things explained to you).

what is now democracy? if they say one thing during the elections and when they get power they do what they want?
That's why don't listen to what they say but what they do...
Future democracies controlled by multinational corporate houses, they controll everything indirectly, people just voted , nothing change
False. They say one thing and then can't do anything wjen they're elected.
So is minorities rights should be safe?
You are also saying that india is not a democracy anymore right.

11:10 is not that they see a bunch of hypocrites, it is that we ARE a bunch of hypocrites.
Who's version of democracy?
According to USA. If you are working according to how USA wants then you are fine whether you are democratic or not. Example is pakistan run by a pakistani military supported by USA and USA relations with middle eastern countries and South American countries run by dictators in the past. At the end of the day or is about what powerful countries like USA,china and Russia and blocks like EU and IMF wants and they justify their actions in the name of right ,wrong ,human rights ,freedom of speech and things like that.
Leftist
Psychology has a term called “catastrophizing” and modern media seems to do that every day. See this video’s headline…
Choose left- DEMOCRACY WINS
Choose Right- DEMOCRACY LOSES
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Obviously who wrote this headline does not understand what a democracy is! If your party loses because of a democratic vote then that’s too bad.
And it might also mean....you need to change some policies/actions ......instead of concentrating all your energy & money trying to destroy your opposituon !
27:30 so it’s social media that polarizes Americans?!!! It’s mainstream media. That’s been their business model for 30 years!
The soundbite in the background is disturbing.
Personally I blame the Biden administration for this seeing as how they've shown weakness overseas while simultaneously trying to kick his political counterpart Trump off the ballot whether we the American people want that or not while calling Trump supporters a bunch of deplorables.

A right wing party in Europe is not automatically a threat to democracy. It is part of the democratic process to have an opposition to the current migration policy or the lack of thereof. Just because you don’t like the Liga, AfD or le pen doesn’t mean they are not the expression of the democratic will.
The truth these government are just working for the American they never care about their own people
Best example is Ukraine
I understand where you're coming from completely. There just comes a point whether these parties on BOTH sides of the political compass are acting truly in the best interest of the people for the long term which is far more important than just the short term. E.g. would you rather short term unsustainable growth which would positively impact people for a small amount time or would you rather a list of policies that enact sustainable long term growth that would impact people positively for the long run? The answer is obvious, just apparently not to voters (once again on both sides) who only have short term interests or who are misinformed. The democratic system needs to be reformed.
This year, my country Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 is also having a Presidential election (I know we're irrelevant to the world, but still).
The current President (Ranil Wickremesinghe) is liberal and Pro-American/Pro-Indian, but he is widely unpopular.
The second most popular candidate
is the Social-Conservative one (Sajith Premadasa), but he is a corrupt fool. I don't think he can even pass a simple IQ test. They are Pro-Everyone 😅.
The far-right nationalists (Pro-Chinese/Pro-Russian and very Anti-American/Anti-Indian) also has some popularity, but not as much as the communists. They also haven't revealed their candidate yet.

People always love to talk about how China claims Taiwan, but don't mention how Taiwan claims China is theirs, but so is Mongolia (even China has given up on Mongolia, whereas Taiwan still sees Mongolia and inner Mongolia is still theirs)
Heck, it doesn't even make sense because Taiwan was and is the Republic of China and until the 1960s, it represented what we call "China" globally because the West refused to accept the Communists, who had captured the Chinese mainland.
Once Nixon made peace with the Chinese Communist govt, it all changed.
The mainland Chinese-run CCP became "China" globally and the Republic of China became Taiwan.
Technically, both sides are right in their claim.
But the ROC lost land and power to the Communists in their civil war.
Technically, Taiwan is the last stand for the Chinese Republic

If its not Taiwan, then its Tibet. China can't hide its bullying in Asia, its a fact.
This is a bad faith argument that is akin to a snake eating its own tail. Aside from Chinese Nationalists, nobody on Taiwan truly seeks to "take back" China. People in Taiwan simply want self determination for Taiwan and for their democratic institutions to survive without fear of the PRC constantly threatening military force.
No offense but no country in the region sees South Africa as a beacon of hope concerning democracy, instead it is seen as a declining regional power with greater insecurity, a widening wealth gap, inter ethnic clashes, and public discontent that has encouraged violent xenophobic attacks against fellow Africans in the past few years. It’s only those that have lived there for the long term that would be able to cope with the way the country is now; and don’t let me get started with the other large democracy on the continent which had its own suspicious election last year; Yes I’m talking about the largest country in Africa in terms of economy and population.
Democracy has only been proven to be most effective in small nations like Taiwan, but in bigger and more diverse nations with a complex array of problems, it hangs precariously.
