I look forward to seeing the two do your magic on the boat. Your ability to make repairs in less than ideal conditions is what attracted me to the channel and now I'm hooked.
We lived and worked on our 1987 44 DeFever for 14 years. Its an awesome boat, no doubt. Ours wasn't nearly as bad as the one you are looking at. It took the better part of a decade though to get her into the condition I wanted and that was doing the work myself.... in FL. The two dealbreakers on a DeFever are the fuel and water tanks. If they are leaking (which they probably are) then its trash. It costs way too much to replace/repair those. Those Lehman engines are great, no worries there. Join our DeFever club and you will have access to a wealth of knowledge. Good luck!!
Could you pump the tanks dry and use internal bladders? ...or would that not work/not be worth it? I don't know the boat at all, I'm just thinking if I were in that situation...
I love seeing guys like you who have sweat and bled and are willing to share their hard-earned knowledge and warmly welcome new folks into the "club". Good man!
Recommend you get an experienced person for this type of boat and spend the time/money to get a REAL list of the items that need repair/replacement. You all can make a real good review, but someone that knows that type of boat is invaluable. Enjoying the channel. Tks for sharing.
As a sailor stuck in a power boaters body, and a lover of trawlers, I am so excited to see these videos start coming through. PS - I love DeFevers too! Good luck, but I know this boat is going to look 1,000 better when you guys are done with it.
What a great way to handle the delay getting your new boat! You two are incredible worker bees and I cannot wait to see how you transform her into the beauty she could be!
I am not sure when the seawind is coming. If you have over 9 months until that comes, this trawler could be home base and a slow stable platform to explore the left side. Say 2-3 months on systems and cosmetics. Nothing structural unless it’s absolutely necessary. Get it running safe and run it around until your world cruiser is ready. Then turn this over to a subscriber for what you have into it. Bam…the birth of a whole new sister channel. You guys are great. Cheers
Jetty smiled and jumped All In! 🐕 I think they had their answer all along! 😊 🚤 🛠 Look out…here comes the🩸😅 & 😭 !!! But it should be fun…fun to watch! 😆 Good Luck, you two!! 🤞🏻
DEFINITELY go for it!!!!!. If you know how to do the repairs it will be a great boat. Take it from a classic yacht restorer. I have refit many many large boats 60-140'. If both of you will be working on it will take about a year of full time work. All the through- hull fittings, and sea cocks are salvageable, unless electrolysis has wasted them. If I was looking for a live-aboard, I would defenetly take on the challenge!
That would be an opportunity I’d love to have. It would be a retirement project for me. As long as she won’t sink, I’d love a chance to spend the rest of my days restoring her.
All you really need to figure out is, can you fix it up well enough to leave the dock, and be able to sell it for close to what you put into it, by the time your boat arrives. Last thing you want is to be on your new boat, and stressing over how to get rid of this boat! But I always wanted a DeFever! Sweet boat!
Billy , like you said " you know what's involved in the amount of time for little jobs, to do them right, and there seems to be a lot of them" Don't be fooled by the prise, there are always other boats. All the best no matter what the decision 😁🤞
Go for it !! I'm very excited to see how it turns out. You can cruise while you are working on the small stuff. Prefect timing for getting back up to the San Juan islands, Just a few miles north of where you were are the Canadian Gulf islands. Further North, is Desolation Sound where the water temp is very warm. Check it out.
I launch my boat just across from that harbor. I use the ramp at Oyster point. Looks like a fun project. You can always rent it out as like a air b&b right at the slip 👍
IN A HEART BEAT !! In a San Francisco Minute ! I think it is a Great boat. And I have the tools and skill to do a boat 'Fixer' like this. Good Luck ! I'll be watching.
Have you owned a big boat before. I had a chance recently to buy an old Crist Craft that need work but at 78 I am too old to start a long project, what an exciting time for you. good luck ........
You guys have that new boat look. Having had the same sickness several times consider hiring a very good marine mechanic to inspect the boat both in operation and out of the water. Have fun.
@ Around 3:10 the narrator is talking about " Going Through the boat " ! The 1st., thing you check is " The Engine ": As in " The Fuel Tank " ! If it's gasoline, It will have " Separated Into Layers " In the Tank " ( That Takes About > 2 years ), if so then the Gasoline is " NO Good " ! It has to be " Removed and Replaced " ! Check ALL The Other Fluids Also ! Check All the Wiring ! ( Pluming excetra ) ! Even Get a " Boat Maintenance " book and follow the " Prescribed Procedures " !
Depending on exactly how much you will put into it for upgrades and making sure it floats and runs, you could flip it and have fun on it while waiting for your catamaran then sell it for way more… you two know what you are doing, just depends on how much work you want to do :)
just waiting as is till the sailing season starts will increase value, buy a boat in the winter, sell it right before the summer, BLAM! doubled your money....
Firstly you have to look at it from a totally different angle, don't think of it as buying a seaworthy vessel. I would like to think of it like buying a campervan first.....an old campervan is valued at much more than that. Convert it to a liveable space and if time and resources permits than make it seaworthy. Haul it to a hard inexpensive location if required. I certainly would buy that if I don't have a home.
For $100, and a bit of cleaning, you could easily have a place to live and have some fun while waiting for the new boat. Just don't go too crazy with the upgrades and repairs and you can unload it for what you have into it (or better) when it's time to get the new cat.
I mean this to be in the most kind of way…Do you want to spend the next 12-24 months of your lives restoring a boat? You seem to really enjoy exploring & this boat will take your summer and fall at minimum, & a couple years to get it in shape out of your youth-spoken from older travelers-it needs lots of repairs that will insert a catheter right into your bank account. Defever are great trawlers no doubt, we almost bought one as well. The question is, do you want to spend the extensive time and money to do it up and, what will it be worth in the end. It will be sunk cost. I don’t think from what we’ve seen, you can put enough lipstick on the pig. Run away! Enjoy experiences doing fun things like you have been. Too many boating vlogs doing boat repairs & restoration already as well. FWIW.
Hi guys, love your channel. How long until the new boat is ready? Do you want to spend that time exploring the west coast or working on the trawler? Worst case, you can’t sell it. What’s the monthly cost to keep it and/or the cost to have it hauled to the dump? How much do you lose in $, time, travel and exploration? Other option - rent as AirBnB.
It’s always difficult when you see massive future timelines and have to decide if that’s the road you are going to go down. But the road NEVER plays out like you imagine. I was on a boat this year. I slept on it one night and was like nope. Now I’m on a completely different time line. Things are going well...
I'm a chef I like what I do but overall I've not been happy with my life within the past 10 years or so. The idea of living on a boat and working in a tourist area at a restaurant and being able to move around and work as a chef pretty much wherever came to me the other day. Then I found your channel. I don't want to waste my life anymore I want to be happy. It's my dream to find a boat like this and live on it now. I'm from Ohio, Never been on a boat never had the opportunity to. I've been to the ocean once with my ex-girlfriend's family. I'm not sure how this is going to be possible for me but I want it and I'll get there one day. I subscribed and I can't wait for your next episode!
LMAO..."Wait a minute, you can't do vital things without me!".... That was so cute and funny at the same time! That cracked me up! I'm working on a 43 ft Gulfstar Trawler now, fixing her up. Following this will help with my motivation! Best of luck to you both!!
Good luck finding a DIY boat yard in the bay area. We've been "stuck" in the area working on a tayana 37 in our slip for the last year, and they are sticklers about staying aboard more than 2 nights/week. And haven't found a DIY yard.
I think this Trawler idea is an adventure that Billy & Seirra just can't pass up. She's a Beauty with some work needed. Each engine alone is 5 grand minimum.
While you're thinking about it maybe consider someone paying you 1/2 costs of materials, fixes and any updates when your new boat comes? Maybe even do an agreement with future owners and get some cash now towards this project?
You two mmaaaayyybbee Crazy, BUT ... It's your kind of crazy that brings gems in the rough back to life. You look like you love the boat, so just do it. Go get you tools, come back and give her the love you two already are showing her
For $100 you can't beat that.. I would do it. It's not only a place to live until your boat is done but also the money that can be made with your time that you guys have right now and money from making the videos to.
Personally, I see a beautiful old boat with tons of potential. Get those tanks checked ASAP. You can get a scope pretty cheaply to look inside it, and around it in areas you can't see normally. Under it, etc. Check into pricing on new tanks if needed. And engine rebuilds if you're not able to do it yourself. After that, if the bones are good, then you're golden. How much you redo or rebuild is up to you, your budget, and time on hand.
Hell YES--as long as there are no liens on it. De Fever made good gear--the engines will be your concern--and you can sail it through the Panama if you have to. Clean fuel tanks or replace them with saddle tanks--buy 'em from truck wreckers--some trucks use stainless ones.--the old fuel will probably need to be removed and stored--then filtered if you intend to use it again before putting it into the tank. I would not consider the North West Passage unless you really like to take risks. I think the engines will be OK after shaking them, loose--pull injectors and pour a little diesel into each cylinder. After it soaks for a day or so, try to move the flywheel. Motor vessels cost a BOMB in diesel to run-- but with luck you will not lose money.
Tula's boat rescue could be a whole new series :) - I don't wish all of this work on you guys, but I know it would be great content, and we've all watched you put in great work getting two boats back into great shape, so in the meantime, love the boat you're with?
Wow, just wow! To see how you rehabbed this awesome trawler is amazing! You found a great boat! So happy for you ❤️ just an amazing adventure! If you have the know how to do this, go for it!!!
My God beautiful buy it unless a knife slides btw the gaps you know the rot.. It sounded really nice. It's so great you tapped on everything so I got a great vibe of the boat it's solid buy it the engine is worth 500 Pluss as a resell and mahogany wood is worth thousands best buy ever..
As a professional engineer for a military defense builder / supplier, first serious idea that comes to mind is the wiring throughout the watercraft. Especially check for baked, brittle and cracked insulation on the internal hidden wiring from extremely hot weather. Get fire insurance immediately. You are looking at external cosmetics visible to naked eye. Please have a inspection engineer go over the boat with a fine tooth comb and give a complete inspection report.
We looked at the same model Defever last year. Somewhat better condition but same interior leaks all over. The fuel tank issue was the dealbreaker though. $50k project hanging over our heads to replace them and all those boats need it done. Enjoy your journey.
LOL i can do that job for less! the metal needed is at max about 500$ .... cutting the metal only takes time, not money....(Provided you have all the tools) welding could be done in a day or 2 .... if i take my hourly wage, it wont cost you more than 10k for both tanks and 3 days of work.... (might even be less depending on where you get the metal from or what fittings you going to use) Gotta love rich boat people with no skills what so ever.... you guys are like piggy banks for people like me.... got payed $2500 once for an anti-fouling job i did in 2 days :D (less than 8 hours of work) did do a double coat because i wanted to finish the can of antifouling
In German we have a saying: "Geschenkt ist noch zu teuer" - "Even as a gift, it's still too expensive".... Without an appraisal of how much it will cost to repair the ship, I would not embark on this adventure.
That saying is for ppl that don't know how to fix it them self, I'll do all work myself and have the knowledge to do it. It wont cost me a ton of cash to fix it, and I got the time to.
It is lovely to see many positive comments about how you guys will do a great job fixing that boat.... but let's leave the fantasy, unicorns, and pixie dust behind and talk reality... it could cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars to get that boat back in shape, and that is if you do almost everything yourselves. Get a grip and find a boat that is within your budget and within your ability to fix.
These are fantastic boats, you should really look around see if you could get a newer one. With about five or six years of work in about $50,000 you can get this boat up and running and have around for many years. Good luck! Be very patient this is going to take some time. And money!
Interesting , Thank You. I personally want it , but as a practical matter I think that it would be to much money ,time and ambition . To me the biggest questions , is the hull sound , are the engines , fuel system functional . Good Luck
Like You said, " Hatch Covers and locker covers are easy." One would be Crazy to walk away from this. If the hull doesn't leak, then everything else is Doable ! I think ?! Blow, Blow !! Roll the Dice !
So I am a SF Bay/Calif Delta 30' boat owner. BUT my first question is how long until your new cat is supposed to be delivered(and be sure to add 3-6 months)? If it is still a year out then I would encourage you to go for it from an adventure standpoint. There are plenty of smaller marinas in the bay/delta area that will let you work on the hard. A slip is gonna run from $400 to $1000/mo. Not sure about boat yard rent. Surfing in Santa Cruz, Fleetweek in SF, diving in Monterey(brrrr), and a long trip to the Channel islands. Tons of history and national or state parks. Avoid SF mooring and move up into lower cost of Vallejo, Benicia, Pittsburg areas for repairs. Tons of marina and parts. BUT ONLY IF you are quite a ways out of the Seawind. It will be a huge amount of work.
it's lovely ! I love the warm color interior wood ..what ever it is.. they seem to use wood with more grey overtones in the newer boats that I've seen..
When the engine started I think that look was a yes from Billy. Lol another options is weigh the cost of taking it out of water and scrapping boat but salvage everything that’s good. Maybe resell I lot of it at a flea market or a resell yard. Lot of work but need to weigh the cost. 100 bucks what the heck, you already spent that on dock fee lol
My thoughts on your poll are that you need to look at your timeline to getting the new boat, the fact that it's so far away from your home base, and you know as well as anybody that you'll end up deeper into repairs than you calculate. I know you have the knowledge and ambition but I would personally pass on it. If it was here in my area that would be different as I know my resources here as do you on the east coast. But either way you go I'll be watching.
Make a list of what you know has to be done. Make a worst case estimate on how much time you need. See the budget you think you need to do the job. Multiply all by, at minimum, a factor 2. Then you come to the most optimistic estimate of what is ahead of you. Ask your self if you are willing to go for that endeavour with your partner and bring all ups and downs here as episodes. The viewers want you to overcome whatever is possible for you. When your positivity and love for each other shines, then you will get the support you need.
I just saw your video where you're going through the boat for the 1st time the engines are not to worry about never seen a pair of forward laments that were not reparable well I take that back one had a run to decide their readily available the parts are available and they run forever
I'm @ 1:45 *If you don't take it ... I'll buy it today.* *And I've not even watched the rest of the video yet.* *If the engine start and it's not taking on water and the generator runs ... I'm good to go.*
Good luck!!
Wow! It is beautiful and so much personality! For $100!!
Could you pump the tanks dry and use internal bladders? ...or would that not work/not be worth it? I don't know the boat at all, I'm just thinking if I were in that situation...
WOW..! Blatter ... good idea...🤔
@@ryano.5149 That's what I would do. Many ways to fix old tanks.

What a great way to handle the delay getting your new boat! You two are incredible worker bees and I cannot wait to see how you transform her into the beauty she could be!
Coool show! A Panama trip would sure be an Adventure! That galley alone is worth the price of the boat!
Bronze ports all over ...
I think they had their answer all along! 😊 🚤 🛠
Look out…here comes the🩸😅 & 😭 !!!
But it should be fun…fun to watch! 😆
Good Luck, you two!! 🤞🏻
Best line in the video: "Sometimes the free boats are the most expensive".
Boat = Break out anther thousand! 👍
That sign you're looking for is called a Valuation Survey… worth it! Find a local Trawler Specialist
DeFever trawlers are my favorite trawlers. I just love the layout of them.
DEFINITELY go for it!!!!!.
If you know how to do the repairs it will be a great boat. Take it from a classic yacht restorer. I have refit many many large boats 60-140'. If both of you will be working on it will take about a year of full time work.

That would be an opportunity I’d love to have. It would be a retirement project for me. As long as she won’t sink, I’d love a chance to spend the rest of my days restoring her.
Love it! You two are going to kill it. I see some $$$ and a lot of swet equity turning into a great situation.
Fixing up this boat will make great content.

Wow! I’m in Arizona and even I was drooling over that diamond in the rough! I see lots of potential!
You don't have to be mad ... But it does help !! ...... Stay Safe & Fair Winds !!

The West coast thing would have killed it for me, but congrats guys she is a beautiful old boat.
That classic boat has some beautiful lines. Stay groovy and stay safe.
I would LOVE to watch you guys do another boat rehab!!
Yay!! Been waiting for this! Can't wait to see more videos. YES take on the project!
Buy it!!!!!! I’ll love to see what you do with it. It will make some great videos. 😉👍🏻👍🏻
Just found your channel today.
IMHO that ship's steering wheel is worth $100
So you're right, it's a no brainer.
Jetty reminds me of our baby Chloe we lost in April. She was such a great girl and our buddy. Man, I miss her!

Even if it's a complete DUDD, you have proper brass fittings that you could sell if you realize the boat would take too much to fix! GO FOR IT!
Have you owned a big boat before. I had a chance recently to buy an old Crist Craft that need work but at 78 I am too old to start a long project, what an exciting time for you. good luck

I would buy that boat in a heartbeat! It looks awesome. I like all the wood and it seems spacious.

Stop guys right now you are in fairy fairy land. here is your sign sleep on it please.
We lived on a 1974 Marine Trader for 5 years. Oh I miss it. That is a fantastic boat yes it needs some love but so much potential. Good luck desiding.
Oh HELL YEAH! She looks like a good ship and very livable

seems like a new adventure! I'm pretty sure that just by cleaning this boat you can make money on it!
I think you should go for it...the videos you can make...for diy boaters...might increase your subscribers
Tough decision.
Once I bought an old tiny house at the beach, completely remodeled it myself and loved it. I had a lot of determination.
Finally some good content again on the channel. Buy it!!!!! you can always sell it or rent it out as a BnB when the new catamaran comes.

Susan & Tony here, One word , RUN!. No way are you spending that much time working on a boat that has been that neglected.
I think this Trawler idea is an adventure that Billy & Seirra just can't pass up. She's a Beauty with some work needed. Each engine alone is 5 grand minimum.
Give the people what they want! We wana see you guys fix it up! Do it yourself! That would make a good show!

Jetty likes that boat. I saw Billy rebuild a motor one time with Minimal tools so I’m not worried.
(might even be less depending on where you get the metal from or what fittings you going to use)
Gotta love rich boat people with no skills what so ever.... you guys are like piggy banks for people like me.... got payed $2500 once for an anti-fouling job i did in 2 days :D (less than 8 hours of work) did do a double coat because i wanted to finish the can of antifouling
In German we have a saying: "Geschenkt ist noch zu teuer" - "Even as a gift, it's still too expensive".... Without an appraisal of how much it will cost to repair the ship, I would not embark on this adventure.
Thats stupid, if you dont have the skills to fix it yourself you should not buy a boat.... or make 6 figures minimal a year....
That saying is for ppl that don't know how to fix it them self, I'll do all work myself and have the knowledge to do it. It wont cost me a ton of cash to fix it, and I got the time to.
They can appraise the boat themselves. They already have experience fixing up three boats prior to this and selling them for a profit later.
@@rogerelzenga4465 so true
I totally agree, looks like a money pit.😳
It is lovely to see many positive comments about how you guys will do a great job fixing that boat.... but let's leave the fantasy, unicorns, and pixie dust behind and talk reality... it could cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars to get that boat back in shape, and that is if you do almost everything yourselves.
Get a grip and find a boat that is within your budget and within your ability to fix.
Awesome boat take care of the important things and the little things just do them one at a time 👍
So excited to see all the projects hopefully!
These are fantastic boats, you should really look around see if you could get a newer one. With about five or six years of work in about $50,000 you can get this boat up and running and have around for many years. Good luck! Be very patient this is going to take some time. And money!
Jetty was waggling his tail so its definatly a yes 👍🏼
I love the warm color interior wood
..what ever it is..
they seem to use wood with more grey overtones in the newer boats that I've seen..
$100.00 unbelievable😲, but hope and pray it's not rotten underneath and the Engine was rebuilt at one point, good luck y probably going to need it.🤞
I’m glad that we got the vital things. I’m still laughing so hard. 😂
Finally after seeing this for so long in Instagram its great to get the first TH-cam video
Yup get it. I will watch every episode. I’m tired of waiting for the new boat.
You asked the question "what can go wrong?" The real question is "What will go right."
Yes yes yes! I Love it. I so hope y’all buy this boat.
I’m sooo excited. I can’t wait. Hurry with the next video.
When your positivity and love for each other shines, then you will get the support you need.
what a turnaround! Congratulations.
I just saw your video where you're going through the boat for the 1st time the engines are not to worry about never seen a pair of forward laments that were not reparable well I take that back one had a run to decide their readily available the parts are available and they run forever
Just because you "can", doesn't mean you "should". I would walk. But its always fun to think of the possibilities.
I´ve seen some crazy boat projects, but this one is really intimidating.Good luck and best regards from Germany
NO NO NO, marina probably requires liability insurance. May need a survey for that. And tap tap tap topsides, what about blisters on the bottom ?
Thats so cool!!! I wish I could get a deal like that on a 35+ ft boat!
You guys are great but I have been there and tried this! That boat is a money/time hole even if it is beautiful!
I'm @ 1:45
*If you don't take it ... I'll buy it today.*
*And I've not even watched the rest of the video yet.*
*If the engine start and it's not taking on water and the generator runs ... I'm good to go.*
YOU have to buy it!!! I was stoked I got a nice low miles BMW for $100.. got to get that boat!
