@@armogantraining7164 Is there normally a delay between the investigation and the polygraph? They had me schedule the polygraph immediately after turning in my packet but it was cancelled. This has been well over a week and I have not recieved a DQ letter yet despite this agency being only a couple hours away. How much of a delay would be expected between getting DQd and beinh notified? They aren't responding to emails or phone calls

@@jonm7541 It one of a couple things. It could be they made a mistake or had to get rid of that polygraph examiner and don't want to advertise a bad image. You could have been removed from the process (sometimes) they will never tell you, or it's a scheduling conflict on their end.

One thing that worries me is if I answer NO to a question like "have you ever stolen anything", isn't that itself a suspicious answer? Hello sir. I’m 38 years old and thinking about becoming a cop. I was arrested for class c felony when I was 17 years old taking a vehicle without permission (parents car) and also used hard drugs like coke, meth, mushrooms. Haven’t done any drugs for the past 20 years. The record has been squashed. Clean driving record no tickets in 20 years. I filed Bankruptcy 6 years ago but my credit is excellent now. Back in 2014 I was almost done with the hiring process of a large agency in california but I withdrew from the process to avoid getting caught in a lie. Omitted doing cocaine 10 times 5 years before the application. At the time, I was in a toxic relationship with my child's mother and was a new father so I was not thinking correctly. Fast forward to today, I served in the military and got honorable discharge in 2020. Currently an armed security supervisor while going to vocational school full-time for Medical assistant and being a single dad (just got custody of my daughter). I realize my mistakes and I feel ashamed of lying but I still want to be a cop. It's been about 10 years from that application, and its been 16 years since I tried that junk. Is there any way I could get over this hurdle? Am I fried??? Would a degree help? Im 39, fit, no arrests, havent had a speeding ticket in 10 years.

I’m in the same boat bro when I was 17 a officer “chased me” and put me down for evading arrest with a motor vehicle. It was dropped due to no probable cause, and I’m getting it expunged right now. The recruiter at SAPD told me they have their own police records so it’s still going to show up. I was told since it wasn’t a conviction I’m not disqualified but I am going to have to explain to the chief what happened… Keep in mind this is 5 years ago when I was 17 so I don’t know how it’s going to go but a class starts in December so I’m hoping to start my process in October.

If you have a dismissed arrest on your record, does the investigator know every detail from doing their own background investigation or do they want to hear your side of what happened. The real question is how to acknowledge you were arrested but to not go into detail. I feel as like your being interrogated for something that might have happened 10 or 20 years ago and I know I'm not the same person I was 10 or 20 years ago and I wasn't even convicted or went to trial, the case was dismissed.

Wait but if you don’t get hired by a department and other departments take the info from the prior departments you applied for, wouldn’t that imply that once you don’t get hired at one you most likely won’t get hired at any other department and first time applicants who have never applied anywhere else will beat you every time? If you don’t do good at one interview and that info follows you then it sounds like your chances just keep dropping and dropping the more you interview and don’t get selected.

Police departments don’t look at what you did as a kid, although they will be able to see juvenile records.
The second time I applied with my local police department, I told the officer conducting my CVSA (lie detector test), that I stole a donut from a City Market and that I purchased a pie from Burger King and threw it in the playground slide. I was in middle school, so I was between 12-14 at the time.
The officer got a little annoyed and told me that they’re only concerned about anything I’ve done as an adult, so 18 and up.
However, on the LHQ, life history questionnaire, there’s maybe 5-10 questions on if you’ve committed crimes at 16 or older. So, I don’t know if laws or rules have changed, but I’m sure everyone was rebellious and arrogant as a teenager. I actually overthought those questions because I ditched classes in high school, talked back to my parents, and there were even two or three times where I ditched a full day of school. My family has a history of anxiety and depression, and every single one of us overthink certain things, so the last two times I’ve gone through the recruitment process, I’d overthink every step. We’re all human, though, so I’m sure mostly everyone gets nervous when going through a recruitment process.

Every departments hiring can be different, think about it this way if you a 20-21 year old applicant. and they need a 7-10 history that definitely goes back to prior to 18. As for overthinking we see this all the time rather than an applicant focusing on question intent.

Does having a job under the table disqualify you in backgrounds?

It depends on the questions, but the generic answers are the police hiring is its own process and more in-depth than most things.
