Throwing in a couple of general tips:
    1. Do NOT chew on anything during the interview; this is seemed as very rude. If you are offered something, that is different of course.
    2. Do NOT speak while you have your hands in front of your mouth. Have a good resting position that makes it easier to talk/breathe.
    3. Try to maintain eye contact, but do not stare as if you were a deer caught in the headlights.
    4. Do NOT come late without having the world's best excuse. There better be a fire or a traffic accident, not that you woke up too late.
    5. Remember that the interview is always two ways, meaning: What's in it for you. Also: Look up the department and have a couple of good questions you can ask them IF they ask if you have any questions. It shows that you came prepared.
    6. Don't get too comfortable (Officer401 talked about this a little) Just because you think the panel interview is going good, it does not mean that you should celebrate early.
    7. This is probably the most important one of them all: If they ask you: "Tell about yourself" Do NOT start talking about your whole life story. A lot of people get nervous and just keep going about schools, other jobs, hell even girlfriends. To prevent this, write down a couple of sentences that say something like this: "I am Jeff, 22 years old, come from Jonesboro, educated so and so and something about your hobbies. Point is, make it SHORT, informative, and have yourself memorizing it so much that you can tell it without stuttering and forgetting your lines. Again, make it SHORT, this is extremely important. Extra plus if you manage to make a bridge at the end with something like: "and this is why I am applying for this job or that is why I am here"
    8. If you do get nervous, try to breathe a bit deeper and also put your hands on your legs or similar. Try to ground yourself and relax. Remember that just because you feel nervous it does not mean you look nervous, nor do the interviewer care too much about this. As long as you can speak you are golden.
    9. Do try to smile a little even if you are nervous. Nobody died, so smiling a little will definitely not only help yourself to a better emotion, but it will also reflect on the people interviewing you.
    10. Good luck!;)

Ive kinda made a reputation for myself runnimg armed contract security solutions on the south side of chicago. Detective is a dream i only realized later in life and im 31.
Based on everything you said, im a top pick for getting in on patrols to start.
I have my own private bodycam footage especially in those parts of the vity during riots and covid showing me already in action, sharing pleasantries with local gang members, a real grey area being a glue for police and their community. Gun incidents, getting shot at, multiple fights 'yawn'. Lol... a Sergeant on gang/narc unit really keeps hounding me especially after he met me working at a bar and during a giant brawl i got excited to dive in and cone out with a 100 dollar bill. I laughed slapped him on the shoulder and said 'bonuses'! He's been on me since.
Ivwant to just jump in like my sister did. She just hit detective and im so proud of her. I'm kinda over my yown though if I cannot get in there.
Any districts or agencies really in need just let me know? FBI was another i looked into when i saw having a degree in finance pushes you further to the top for their demand. I would like to get to know more about that. My old boss was fbi currently and i would be telling him all the details on things going on in the world and he like.. would have no clue who jihaddi john was, or ehat the stuxnet malware was during the tensions with iran. Lol blew my mind.
There are sone tid bits of cam footage on my channel. The rest i dont feel comfortable showing since i nkrmally work aalongside law enforcement and theyre some wild scenes
      Great video

Same, I told my parents and they became furious. They began to go on about Police Brutality and spoke about how valuable my life is compared to others. My siblings said that I was too intelligent to waste my life to become a police officer but there is really nothing else I want to do! A lady overheard me the other day talking and she said that my choice of words was proper. She then asked me what I wanted to be in the future and I responded that I wanted to become a police officer. She too was now upset. She talked about how intelligent I am for someone that grew up where I did and the way I did (she knows this because she is a friend of my fathers) and that I should become a prosecutor. A prosecutor does indeed sound interesting but I much rather become a police officer. I want the experience. Pursuing this career of a police officer indeed does put a lot of pressure upon me.

Best advice I can give to anyone, is to be yourself and relax, especially for the panel interview. The panel interview is meant to intimidate you, and if they are successful, you may disqualify yourself. For me personally, 20 minutes into my interview, I was asked to give a description of the person who greeted me at the door. Pay attention to details.

Also the "What would you do?" scenarios. That's why I feel like military experience would offer me the opportunities to get experiences and develop as a person to answer those questions.

I’ve done an 8 month deployment last year, and I deploy again in august for another 7 months. After I get back is when I get out. Military really does help you grow as a person. With the right people around you, it can mold you into a professional more than qualified capable person of being a cop. If I were you look around at all the branches and pick out the best choice for you. And when say for you, I mean don’t pick a branch because it’s the “best” branch out there. I’m in the USMC, and although it’s great, I wish I would’ve joined the Air Force. Every military branch has an MOS/job of MP, which is military police. Here where I am stationed, the MP’s are actual cops. They go through their own academy, and after graduating, they’re sent to do policing. They wear cammies and or police uniforms. And they ride around in charges with lights and sirens. It’s pretty cool. So do your research and don’t let your ego pick out a branch. Hope this helps. I passed the police hiring process in Germany (Hessian state police) last week. It was really intense, especially the computer test and the physical evaluation, but I made it. It will get harder during the 3 year long training, but getting through those tests is a big motivational boost and gives me hope that I am going to be a police officer in 3 years. I enjoy watching your videos because it's interesting to compare police work in different countries with different laws and cultures.

I've passed 2 oral board interviews, & bombed a phone one (phone bc corona reqs in march). I have 2 more agencies I'm lined up with in the hiring process to see if I can make the cut. Anyway, everything you said is spot on. I'd add that they ask scenario based questions as well. Some agencies are heavy handed on them, some only ask 1, with the rest being personal - box of chocos
As for academies, some are hardcore, some are pretty relaxed. Mine was in between. If you're sponsored, don't be an idiot & take it for granted. We had guys sleeping in class, being consistently late, one person back-talking instructors & their fellow agency cadets, all the way to cheating on exams. I put myself through & did 100x better than those clowns, so it's frustrating, & we lost ppl because of stupid stuff like that. Also, if you're timid, develop no command presence, & can barely shoot, drive, or DT, you're gonna fail FTO when the time comes. If you have ANY doubts about doing this line of work, then don't take up a class/sponsored slot for someone else. I also hated being in groups for PT (physical training) with extremely overweight ppl who didn't give AF - made me either work harder or less (to the point I couldn't get a workout in) depending on what we were doing that morning. You also make your entire class, or classes there (we sometimes shared PT with corrections class) suffer because we held a plank or leg lifts waiting for the 500lb ppl to finish which can take forever. Not trying to sound mean, but you really are a burden if you go into an academy in such a condition. How did they pass the obstacle course to even get into the academy you may be wondering? - They knew someone important. Yep.
A video I'd like to see, or direct me to if it's already been done, is what to learn for self defense? My academy's DT course was an absolute joke. I know an agency will train you a bit more once hired, but still won't be great. I usually hear Brazilian jiu-jitsu is the go-to. Whats your experience in that area of policing?

Great points here especially regarding the panel interview. I've been part of a few panels and here are more tips:
Big difference between confidence and arrogance. Regardless of your background and/or experience, dont walk in like you are doing them a favor for applying.
Always try to make eye contact when answering questions with whomever asked the question, but not uncomfortably so lol, if that makes sense. Scan the room when you talk, briefly speaking to each panel member. Be polite, dont slouch in your chair and dont name drop. I promise that no one on the panel cares that your neighbor's, cousin's, eldest daughter works there... Best of luck all!

Everything here is spot on. I do find it funny how you mentioned the oral board suppose to be unbiased. My first one, in California, was unbiased and I won them over. The easiest process I've experienced is NYS Corrections. The NYPD process is the most difficult one I've dealt with. The NYPD wants to know EVERY SINGLE THING! If you moved around a lot as a kid, if you've had tons of jobs (regardless of how long you worked there), if you've had tons of tickets, if you've had tons of email addresses, social media accounts, if you've visited or lived over seas, attended multiple schools (including overseas)... All I can say is GOOD LUCK because the process is going to be hell for you. They want EVERYTHING! I swear the NYPD is an intelligence agency.

Thank you Officer401 for making this video and all your other videos. I plan on starting my hiring process in a couple years once I get my degree. The incite from actual police officers is very helpful and has been allowing myself to better understand the process and to know what I am getting myself into.

This was a great video! Does anything important change in the process if you apply after being active duty military? You might not be able to answer directly, but maybe someone else in the community might. I understand and appreciate all the key recommendations and suggestions you presented. Thank you, Officer!

@officer401 nailed it. This is such valuable information. I'm always surprised by how many applicants there are that don't take the hiring process seriously.
I absolutely agree with the part on giving unique answers during your interview. EVERYONE says that they want to serve their community so come up with something unique.
As officer401 mentioned, dress in business attire for your panel interview (this is a must). Know what the physical fitness standards are and train for the PT test like it like it's your job. Memorize the agencies mission statement and actually READ the job description.
Regarding the scenario based questions, this advice is spot on. You MUST be able to articulate your answers and once you make a decision, stick with it. Be confident in your answers.
The most important advice, BE HONEST! Good luck to all of the prospective officers out there. We need more officers on the streets. Stay safe and God Bless America!

As a cop, wouldn't it be required to be "color blind"? 😁

No, because being color blind is not in the interest of equity and accommodating for those who may be more disadvantaged.

Got a couple of laughs and smiles but over all I couldnt really get a sense of how they liked me. Their stone face game was strong...
