Before we use any power tools, let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule, than to wear these, safety glasses.
I love watching thees again but they do age. It does matter what wire you attach to what terminal. Doing it the wrong way can lead to bare metal that is energized when the lamp is off but plugged in. It's not a massive risk but listen to the instructions from your kit and have the hot wire go to the hot side.
Wrong. Incandescent light bulbs, fluorescent lights bulbs, and even screw base LED’s don’t care about polarity. The lamp kits you buy even today will have both terminals on the plug the same size which will allow you to plug it in either way to the outlet. As for the hot touching metal, lamps don’t come with a ground wire, and both terminals on the socket are guarded from touching the outer portion of the socket. Sometimes by cork, cardboard or even paper. Go to a big box store and you will find exactly what he installed here, and the instructions will likely not tell you to take the hot to one terminal or another. This was filmed in 1993, not 1953. It aged just fine.
I’d rather buy a wood lamp than make one! It’s not because of knowing how to turn wood, it’s making electrical connections if you’re not sure how to make electrical connections!

The good old days of Norm Abram on the New Yankee Workshop.
Excellent work as usual. I have had a workshop in Wyoming and restored furniture for 50 plus years and always learn new techniques. Thanks…….

Also the green felt and brass fittings would be swapped for black felt and oil rubbed fittings these days haha

This is a place where we can come to appreciate Norm, Russ and their show. Nobody wants politics here, don't ruin it for everyone else.
