- Here is a practical project that harks back to the first half of the season: the design for this nest of drawers is based on an antique found in a Nantucket shop. A 10-drawer storage unit built of recycled pine, this versatile piece will be equally coveted by the handy person, who will want it for the workshop, and the decorator, who will want to display it on a table or hang it on a wall. The compartments are perfect for storing odds and ends like stamps, hardware or craft supplies.
Season: 8 | Episode: 12
Original Air Date: March 23, 1996

I watched Norm faithfully while the program aired. Thanks Norm and Russ!
In England in the 1950s every tobacconist had these drawers for keeping cigars in. Nice work.
Norm ,you have some patience to produce furniture like this , wonderful craftsmanship 👏👏🇬🇧🇬🇧
Does anyone else hear the director or someone saying go for the shots? I completely understand and respect. So cool to see again and hear the difference 😆👍
I watched these shows as a kid growing up in the 90’s. I loved them then and love them now. I’ve never built a single thing but I still love watching. Such enjoyment and relaxation from watching. Thanks for all the years Norm!
Same here. I too never built anything, but I loved watching the show. Recently I built a Lego house, and while I was building it I had The New Yankee Workshop on in the background. It felt very nice and relaxing. It was as if I was actually building a piece of furniture, even though it was a Lego set
I really encourage you to build something! With a very basic set of tools, your hands can create some amazing things! You're never too old, I'm still teaching myself new things as I add metalworking to my Shop's Arsenal! I don't normally build anything I see on shows or books, but I use the techniques to create my own projects! The only time I truly feel at peace with myself is when I'm working with my hands....
I watched all the shows and got hooked on woodworking. I'm still at it today. My kids still quote Norm all the time.....safety glasses...glue and brads
Still Great to watch after all these years. I remember watching this episode in my 30's, now in my 60's and still enjoyable and educational. Thanks Norm.
Great having all the NYW catalog online.
Something like this I could see one taking the plans and adapting to be a monitor stand of sorts.
I truly miss being able to watch Norm every weekend on TV and learn from his huge level of experience. No matter the political situation surrounding me, the weather, or anything else, I always knew Norm would have something more relaxing, informative, and sometimes useful to share. I didn't have a shop, didn't have the tools, but always had the desire to watch someone who wanted to show and share. Thanks Norm for all you gave us over the years.
A nice project using many skills.
Boy, I miss this show, It was always relaxing , enjoyable, and educational . Hope everything is good with you, sir.
Norm you are a master craftsman and will always be a high quality contractor
I remember when this episode premiered. I loved the Nest of Drawers when I first saw Norm build one. I bought the drawing and the VHS tape and went to the shop. I built one and still have it to this day. It’s probably my favorite build from Norm and the New Yankee Workshop. Thanks Norm.
Absolutely brilliant TV show
I remember watching this on PBS and it was one of my favorite episodes. i became a woodworker partly because of the inspiration from watching this show. I fell in love with dovetails and drawers. Thanks for sharing these and bringing back amazing memories.
I watched this episode when it was first uploaded here on TH-cam and knew immediately I wanted it in my shop for all of my lathe accessories and router bits.
I bought the plans and only built half because I dont have the wall space, but it is a fun and relatively simple project.
I used my lathe for the fronts though because it only took about 5 minutes a piece 😉
A nest of draaas. Notice the draaaa front. Park the car in Harvard yard always remember these safety glasses. Caaaacas. You’re the best norm.
I have built two of these. One in 1997 and another in 2008. Every single drawer is so functional and we use them every day. Milling the pulls is a lot of fun. The next project from NYW should be the 1996 Router Station.
Great news about the build. It's a great project to give your router a workout and very practical. Regarding the original Router Station - hold that thought. It's going to be a little delayed. We will jump to Season 9 but we will come back to it.
@@newyankeeworkshop Aww. Why the delay? It is the most successful project from the NYW. We love and appreciate you downloading these videos.
@@christopherstein106 The most successful is the Adirondack Trio 😉-- then it's the "Deluxe" Router. We stopped showing the Original Router when the Deluxe came out and it never got digitized since it was out of rotation. We had to send it out.
@@newyankeeworkshop thank you for that information. Who can I send the pictures of my work to? Does the new Yankee workshop have an email address to where I can send my progress pictures?

Really enjoying seeing these old episodes again. Watching an episode or two has become part of my morning coffee routine. I've watched Norm's NYW & TOH since they first aired so long ago. Like so many others, both have helped me become a reasonably accomplished woodworker. Norm's first router table build (S8E13) is not available within the TH-cam S8 series. I noticed Norm using a router table in S9E1 and said..whoow..where did the router table come from?? When did he build that? It turns out it was the missing S8E13. Unfortunate. I know he rebuilt it in S15, but it would be nice & helpful to see him build the original. Please make it available. If a text update early in the show needs to refer to the S15 remake, that's fine, but the original show would be helpful to see.
man I wish I had to tools and time to build something like that. I can certainly use it!
Takes a steady hand to make those drawer knobs, especially after all the work involved with the dovetails and assembly.
Though I watched the NYW back in the day, and foregone much building in an attempt to climb the ladder of life - putting my passion for woodworking on hold. Now; as old as dirt, it matters not what rung of the ladder in life I am on, it’s time to build. No more truck tail gate builds … it’s time for a proper shop ( the best I can anyways ). 👍🇺🇸
Neat project, I imagine these are maybe spice drawers, in a store or restaurant or "manor" home.
As always thanks to Russ and the 2023 Crew for reposting and updating these New Yankee Workshop videos - and Norm for all the years of woodworking motivation, teachings and projects for over 20 seasons. This Nest of Drawers project is THE TUTORIAL on using the Leigh Jig for dovetails. When I first got mine I was overwhelmed. Back in the day Leigh provided a detailed spiral ringed instruction guide and a VHS tape. I tried following and using with mixed results at best on my dovetail joinery. I found it confusing and overwhelming. I remember when this project was first aired. I bought the video in VHS format just for the Leigh Jig tutorial section and how to make dovetails for drawers, boxes, case work - any project I wanted dovetail joinery. While I still need to refresh my older memory when using the Leigh Jig, it all comes back to me eventually. So great to see this Nest of Drawers project on TH-cam. Now I have it all on TH-cam. Thanks for the memories and updating for 2023 and the future. Cheers!
This is certainly a great project to practice dovetails and router skills!
I clicked just to hear norm say drawers 😂
Looks like a good piece for the kitchen.
I watched this episode when it first aired... I remeber thinking, id love to have that!
27 years later, id still love to own that, and still dont know why. 😂
Anyone else notice the This Old House magazine in the beginning?
It's also sitting on the Long Table with a Pergola outside 😀
I love watching these classic NYW videos with Norm. I pretty much watch everyone years ago. I do hope they restore and clean them up though. The quality is not that great and I think it would attract younger “makers” if the video was crisp.
Great chest!
It’s a nest of drahhhhhs! 🤣🤣
If you look close enough you can see the Stationary Planer in the corner of the shop. I imagine the Portable Planer was used for this project because of the overall rough condition of those boards. Why sacrifice the knives on the good planer when you have the cheaper planer on hand, it makes perfect sense.
That might have been the case however there are a number of examples throughout all the seasons where an "inferior" tool was used instead of a more capable, powerful etc. version.
Originally it would have been in a shop/store selling something sold loose but unlikely to be tea, coffee, tobacco or pharmaceuticals as the drawers aren’t lined and those products would dry out very quickly and be worthless.
Why are there episodes missing from this season? Have they yet to be converted and posted? I am looking for S08E13 specifically the Router Table. Thanks!
That's the only episode we don't have 😬 We're still looking for it.
Or as Norm would say, a nest of "draws".
I think Russell’s grandson posts these videos
I've known Russ for quite some time, but I'm pretty sure we are not related 😉
@@newyankeeworkshop well you’re doing a great job anyway 😃
Was this guy Fired from THO?
No. Norm did TOH for 43 years and NYW for 20. He simply retired. You can watch his retirement special here:
therokuchannel.roku.com/details/4e7c1a455272561688bb8fb06e805ee6/the-house-that-norm-built
He lost me at the plywood back on this one.. I think some nice ship lapped boards would have been amazing.
Beautiful job but I would've used a fancier wood such as cherry, Quilted maple or perhaps walnut.
I would have just used a hand plane to knock down the edges and slightly round over those partitions and case edges, adding some minor dings and gouges to enhance the old look. Machined edges are too regular and clean-looking for an antique appearance. I might also make mine with a deep enough case to accommodate a French cleat in the back to hang it on a wall.
Before we use any power tools, let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule, than to wear these, safety glasses.
My guess is apothecary or tobacconist
pbs
I still can’t believe how the shop went from a large cast iron floor model planer in the early episodes, then to a Taiwanese 15” model, and eventually to a cheap portable planer. At some point, someone should have said “no” to certain free tools.
In watching the season one episodes I have noticed there is more than one piece of professional quality equipment in the shop. The change in equipment might have had to do with using what the audience would have access to.
No… using what the audience can buy new. All marketing.
@@joeblow9180Yes. Same thing.
You put your weed in there
I watched this show when it aired on PBS. It came on every Thursday night right when that dumb show Friends was on. I would rather watch this show then that dumb show Friends. As you can tell, I didn’t like Friends.
You probably don't have any, either.
I built this but on a smaller scale for my embroidery floss
