Don't need his shop full of tools. Watch closely over the episodes. You will see he does a rabbit fir example with the radial arm saw in one episode and the table saw in another. You can do a lot with a few tools if you think your way through the operations a bit.
@@TadTheTinker I agree. As you watch the episodes throughout the seasons one can see Norm shows several ways to do the same operation, teaching flexibility in techniques and methodology.
Really appreciate these visits to Napa Valley California for the antique projects to build in the New Yankee Workshop. I beg to differ with Norm when he stated in the introduction "Napa Valley has the best wines in America". That was in 1996. Where I live near Paso Robles California we have a saying "NAPA is for auto parts and PASO is for wines". The Paso Robles AVA's wines in 2023 are every bit as good and award winning as Napa Valley - especially the Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfindel and proprietary winery blends - maybe better because of the price points and friendlier (not so snooty) wineries. This is a great project and tutorial on using a lathe. On my version, I used rough sawn White Oak (Chestnut impossible to get in Pennsylvania at the time) when I built this project in the later 1990s. I used squared heavy rounded over legs for my version of coffee table because I still do not have a lathe for turnings (or need for one) and a Danish Oil finish. After 25+ years this coffee table sits proudly and functionally in our family room here in California. Thanks as always Norm and Russ as well as the 2023 Crew for bringing these memories back to us on TH-cam. (Norm, if you read these comments try a Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon - you will enjoy an award winning AVA and your Yankee thrift will appreciate the price point.)
This used to be true, but the plastics they use in tools are a LOT better than they were when we were younger, and you don’t need metal everywhere on a tool. That said, I can’t vouch for the electronics.
? You can still get new tools both hand and machine at least as good and often better than those made "back in the day" - you just need a big bank balance nowadays!
so 2 days ago, I had a strange dream about chestnut trees and their demise( i said it was a strange dream) and when I woke up, this had been posted just 1 minute prior... crazy.
They have been making phenomenal advancements in hybridizing them in hopes of reintroducing them to their native range again. Mature, likely untouched, trees are occasionally -yet rarely - still found deep in the woods.
Greetings and felicitations, Norm. I was wondering as to why you cut those small splits off the boards, instead of using the yellow carpenters glue to correct them? I understand it's easier for the show, but it would be nice to see how we can repair salvage old boards that contain checks and splits. Great work, and I love the series. been a fan from the start! This Old House with Bob Villa, comes to mind when we saw a young Master Carpenter named Norm Abram!
I built a Bench my Wife fell in love with at a shop that was not for sale. It was Hard Pine. I asked the lady if I could take some pictures and measurement. She said sure. (Thanks Norm) My Wife wanted Wormy Chestnut. North of Lancaster, Pa. I found a guy who just took down a massive barn of Chestnut. I bought 300BF @ $3.50/ BF! What a bargain. I built the bench and bookshelf. The Chestnut has an amazing patina with a Danish Oil finish.
If I understand your question, it’s because the tablesaw blade doesn’t cut straight up and down. That’s why he did it on the bandsaw. Or are you talking about something else?
There is several methods to reach your end destination. The earlier NYW'S Norm had more basic tools, that got the job done. The later episodes became tool advertisements. It worked,I bought them.

Before we use any power tools, let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule, than to wear these, safety glasses.
I think he was breathing heavy because of that gut. He got rid of it later. I met him ten years ago and he didn’t have breathing difficulties I could tell.
Thank you for sharing your art with the world.
In Norm we trust.
I remember my dad watching these shows. I definitely don’t have the tools to do what he does, but maybe some day, if the fates come together.

Norm handled that coffee table like a pro!
Because he is a pro.
Beautiful wood.
Looks similar to white oak.
That finished look is drop dead gorgeous.

We had some damn fine wines in Paso last year.
That is a charming coffee table made of repurposed chestnut.
Great table Norm and Russ. Really enjoyed this project, thank you!
Bring back the New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abram.
I watched this whole series the first time around. Watching again. Very satisfying. Thank you for posting!
I miss being able to buy quality tools made out of sturdy metal and not all plastic. Big, heavy and will last a lifetime.

Norm has done that on other episodes. For the Mesquite Bookcase he repairs quite a bit of the wood.

At 19:11 he uses a tenon jig to make the cheek cut. Anyone wonder why he didn't notch the cheek off when he made the reference cut on the table saw?

Yes I was considering an easier way the would still fit in the mortise....why would I ever second guess Norm..@@johnsrabe

because it's a quicker, cleaner, more accurate and repeatable with the jig.
Are the legs chestnut as well?

i always wondered about his breathing too, but i think it has to do with the amount of speaking he's doing and the microphone picking him up
