      Tolerances are so tight that hot oil has to be pumped around the engine to "loosen things up a bit".
      that's how it works today. Not sure about but era but i'd imagine so.

    Thought f1 engines, even ones from 12 years had to be heated to operational temperature before starting because the component tolerances are too tight when cold.

    • @GTI1dasOriginal
      @GTI1dasOriginal 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      exactly. that's why it smokes like hell. it's initially burning itself up, therefore it can idle. they just ruined the engine when starting cold. LOL

    • @chrisandersen930
      @chrisandersen930 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      i believe that the f1 teams warmed the engine prior to running them to get the engine components to their running temp sizes. you know, heat expands/cold contracts. this way you don't have the cold (smaller) parts banging around while the engine is warming up.

    • @GTI1dasOriginal
      @GTI1dasOriginal 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Andersen Correct. Engine + all the fluids (viscosity) are "pre warmed". The tolerances of the engineparts are designed to only function when the engine is at operating temperature. What these guys do is use ether to FORCE a combustion, no matter what the result will be. And well... the result of this: pistons etcetra are WAY to tight for the bores when cold, so they "eat" themselves a way where there isn't any when running, thus fucking up the engineblock.

    • @marcov6t770
      @marcov6t770 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GTI1dasOriginal Not correct, it's the other way around, the bores never get that hot(water jacket), but the pistons do(top), they'll be slapping a little in the bores until fully warmed up. Oil temp(viscosity) will be more important, you need flow to lubricate, when cold there's less flow due to the greater viscosity.

    • @GTI1dasOriginal
      @GTI1dasOriginal 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MarcoV6T well, with all due respect, but you may explain that to the person I got that knowledge from, a high level engineer / professor at the IVA institute (netherlands) who specializes in high performance and F1 engines. He showed me blueprints of (former) F1 cars which showed that the distance inbetween bores and pistons (engine cold) where near the unmeasurable, (running towards zero) At operating temps it showed the distance was big enough to move freely and the oil needed to be prewarmed to get the viscosity needed for those tolerances. If I'm wrong, then that professor is wrong...

    • @stubbi
      @stubbi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's an A18. It can very much be the car Hill nearly won the Hungarian Grand Prix back in the day.

    • @ladislavmalak444
      @ladislavmalak444 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh really? I was a big fan of Damon Hill back in the days. There might have been better pilots, but he was the ultimate driver+personality in one, at least for me. And that Hungarian race was a really memorable one. Just like the last race of his F1 carreer that he won the next year in Jordan F1. Or at least I think it was his last....

    • @hejamodo
      @hejamodo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ladislav Malák, it's correct that his last win was 1998 Belgian GP driving Jordan 198. Jordans first and only 1-2 finish as Ralf Schumacher came in just under a second behind. They had great help from DC at that race when he took out Michael Schumacher when he was about to lap DC.

    • @ladislavmalak444
      @ladislavmalak444 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember that race.... I was serving my compulsory military service (in that year it was still compulsory in my country), me and one other F1 & Damon Hill fanatic were sitting in the only room in our army barrack with a TV and all the other soldiers were enertained by watching the two of us going crazy in front of the TV.... ;)

    • @hejamodo
      @hejamodo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Especially at the first start I imagine. That was a big one, and also DC:s fault. Not one of his best races :) But nice to see Hill take his only win with another car than the Williams.

    To all of commenting this video: of course we preheated the water and oil during a couple of hours before we started the engine. The total preparation work before starting the F1 car took 2 days. I have been running it on different racetracks and it goes like a dream👍
    And dont worry, I am still alive, very fit and enjoying life and my old Porsches 😊

      Um...no. Any car nut worth sludgy oil is smart enough to wear plugs and vent the room. What they did...cool, got a beautiful old racer to crank up. I'd have taken it for a spin (rural here, we drive all sorts of dangerous things on the roads). Not cool....no plugs or vents.
