I've been watching Formula One since 1964 and all that I remember from one year to the next is "progress", especially once the road car manufacturers got involved. The V8, nice though it was, is history. Progress for large engine manufacturers like Mercedes Benz, Ferrari, Renault and Honda is the turbocharged hybrid power unit. Why would these guys want to go backwards? They are in it for the prestige and technology development that they can use on their road cars. So, forget about V12s, V10s and V8s unless they are mated to a hybrid system. F1 is meant to be the pinnacle of motor sport racing; why would they go back to an old "has-been" technology? To satisfy some die-hards that like "cheap", noisy and "environmentally unsound" petrol engines? The motor manufacturer's Executive Board (on behalf of their shareholders) see this as Research and Development as well as Marketing. Perception and money is what will make the decision for those big teams taking part , not some cantankerous, wrinkly, old wealthy, fart that likes to stir the shit in the paddock (aka Bernie Ecclestone).
Mate. Formula 1 is WAS world renown for the "loudest" race on the earth. It didn't matter who you were or whether or not you follow moto racing, everyone new the sound of a formula 1 car. Now we have these bucket of shits that sound like a vacuum cleaner. The close racing is gone. The noise is gone. And to top it off, the sport has virtually made it impossible for smaller teams to exist. And you can't say that the v8's wernt economically friendly because there using the same amount of fuel each race and they don't race enough to do permeant damage to the environment. So all you up tight idiots who think hybrid is the way to go, congratulations because you killed the sport. Go look at the poles and see what 77% of the fans say. Yeah that's right. V8. Don't give me that hybrid bullshit lecture. Go to another form of motor racing if you don't like the noise.
"Go to another form of motor racing if you don't like the noise." Luke, I would say that it is you that needs to go to another form of motor racing, because that is the way Formula One is these days (certainly in 2014 and 2015. And more than likely 2016 and 2017). The big Teams make road cars and this technology is what they want to use in their cars; not loud, V8, gas-guzzlers. I know where you're coming from but this is the reality of F1 now.
There is 1 team who wants v6 turbo (Mercedes). Now I'm not sure if you are aware but they had a votes over the Christmas holiday. Everyone single team and driver voted a return of v8. Everyone except Mercedes. That's a statement right there. And go and ask any single driver what there favourite era was, v10. They are the people in the car, so I think we should follow their opinions. Your right though. Technology is evolving. And it just goes to show that it has ruined our sport
Now that is how an engine is supposed to sound. If turbo charging is the future, well I'm glad I witnessed the glory days. The sound of that Williams and McLaren V10... Seriously, R.I.P F1.
its sad my generation will most likely be the last to have v8s its a sad just the beautiful sound they make alone not to mention the power makes them unmistakable
This is the sound i'm missing. Please FIA, bring back 3 litre V10s with no rev limit, ban ERS and DRS, more down force, bring back re-fueling, tyre war, wider tyres. Better still, throw away tech rules, let designers do what they want, cars would be 10 seconds a lap faster.
richardxeelee I know, I also dont like the sound of the cars, but those engines were outdated and Mercedes said that they would pull out of the competition, next year they will be better, I hope.
I respect what you are saying and I agree with 99% of what youre telling me but just understand this. It's been almost a year when you wrote this and what we've witnessed is, that these current f1 cars are by FAR the fastest F1 car ever, and it's not even close, along with the fact that they're using far less energy to do it. If only they can make the sound loud and sexy somehow. Doesn't HAVE to sound like the aforementioned orchestras on wheels but wish they sounded wicked in their own way. Not my Moms Eureka Vacum.
I am a massive Formula 1 fan but PLEASE can we have the V8 s back with sounds like the above rather than the wet fart noise we have now. Oh, and while I'm on a moan, let's get rid of this daft double points for the last race thing! Good luck Lewis!!! And Jules :(
I would like to know what they are doing porting some of the exhaust gas from the manifold under the car....look under the exhaust manifold and you will see the small pipe glowing as well....I wonder if they are sending hot exhaust gas to the front of the side pods or chin spoiler for extra downforce...
Slapbladder if I remember correctly lotus tried something like that and it didn't work out to well for them. doubt redbull would follow suit. then again Asian Newey is a genius so if anyone were to get that working real world instead of just in theory. it's be him
Alonso did this on youtube when he left Renault. Look for it. The sound is unreal. The sound in this clip sounds like air, not that impressive. I'm sure it's just the device it was recorded on. Anyway, look for the Alonso clip.
It kills me that there's nobody sitting in the cockpit, and everything's controlled by electronics! That, and the garage floor's cleaner than dishes coming out of my dishwasher!

"Go to another form of motor racing if you don't like the noise."
Luke, I would say that it is you that needs to go to another form of motor racing, because that is the way Formula One is these days (certainly in 2014 and 2015.
Seriously, R.I.P F1.
wait until 2018, it will be worth it
Why? Will there be bikini clad minxes driving the turbo cars instead of boring F1 drivers? ;)
***** nope, they will improve the engine sounds, wait for it
Mclaren mp4/6 for life
The Turbo F1 cars in the 80s were some of the best ever.
WHAT?? I CAN'T HEAR YOU! WHAT???
some artist should sample this, if not i probably would, this is beautiful
F1 the pinnacle of motorsport technology and then they go fuck it up with the introduction of V6 engines. Missed the V8s, V10s and V12s
Alucard Hellsing . 8th 6cyl I thought sounded good and they make more power and Tom.
Electric motors are the future, it's progress, although the Vs will never die on an enthusiast level.
LOL
Alucard Hellsing I totally agree. I would rather see a twin turbo flat 4 with 950 hp...lol.
Technically, 4 cylinders F1 cars existed in the 80s. The BMW/Megatron M12 and M13, for example. 920hp in '87.
v8, the sound of god.
The sounds that keeps you awake
I miss the sound too, but holy shit 2014 has been an awesome season! Deal with the lack of noise and enjoy the great racing!
Engineering brilliance 2014!
Seb and Horner making out was a nice touch ;)
Final thing Mark Webber did for F1 :(
insane levels of mechanics nd engineering all in one
My grandpa would have said: "geez they're revving the tits off that thing!"
its sad my generation will most likely be the last to have v8s its a sad just the beautiful sound they make alone not to mention the power makes them unmistakable
ADDICTIVE !!! F1 will never be the same ..
Good GOD! That thing is savage!!!!
That was fuckin' radical! I got goosebumps a little! Dude!
Este é o maravilhoso som de um autêntico F1. Pena que estes dias estão no fim...
Sad ending of Vettel dominance
This is the sound i'm missing. Please FIA, bring back 3 litre V10s with no rev limit, ban ERS and DRS, more down force, bring back re-fueling, tyre war, wider tyres. Better still, throw away tech rules, let designers do what they want, cars would be 10 seconds a lap faster.
If you want society to develop you have to accept the rules.
helder da silva The current engine rules were demanded by the car companies, no one asked the fans what they wanted.
richardxeelee I know, I also dont like the sound of the cars, but those engines were outdated and Mercedes said that they would pull out of the competition, next year they will be better, I hope.
V10 are the best engine in F1, pure sound, pure speed, fuel, tyre war... Now we have a Formula SHIT, this is not formula 1. FORZA V10. V6 SUCKS
That nostalgic v8 engine sound!😩 missed it.
The last time an amazing engine was in F1 the V6 is efficient but let’s all agree we want this.
that’s one way to heat up the engine, lemme tell ya
Amazing, old school must return.
"Old school" ... are you serious?
jraybay ??
Tom Stevenson ??
jraybay what's wrong with old school?
Tom Stevenson There's nothing "old school" about a 3 year old V8.
GIVE THAT BABY ITS PACIFIER JESUS (in all seriousness i wish i got to go to one of the races back then, i wouldve been so happy )
I wonder how high they revved without the rev limiters.
22000 RPM =)
Pedro Pereira Where do you get the 22000 rpm figure from?
On Redbull´s facebook page a long time ago
rossiwilton when the V8s started back in 2006 they didn't have a rev limit.
Watch an onboard video of 2006 and you will see the cars revving to 21,000
This is so cool, and so sad, at the same time. I don't think the cars, even this year, are exciting at all. Really miss the old days.
Anyone here in 2020 just missing these f1 times?
The time they took off the rev limiters and just went for it. I think it was 22000 rpm in the end. Wow
You can see why it is worth recovering exhaust energy.
That engine is literally screaming "I WANNA RACE, I WANNA RACE, I WANNA RACE" on idle
holy crap nice vid, thanks.
Doctor: yes you have really bad tinnitus, what have you been doing?
Me: listening to TH-cam
Holy F**K! F1 taught me that its not a real race car unless I'm scared of it! GOD DAMN
この頃のレッドブルが一番最強だったかもね。
セバスチャン&マークのベストドライバーが揃ってたし、非力だがシャシの邪魔しないルノーエンジンとかバランスが良かったよね。
Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Cant believe these days are long gone 😪
I had the privilege of going to the Singaporean Grandprix in 2014 and I will never forget that sound - epic.
this reminds me of that video of fernando thrashing the renault v8
I can feel masculinity in this video.
sound like an alien T-Rex trying to blow his noise.
2:18 ahaha the guy in the back is like "omg this stupid shaky smartphone video is more worth to me than hearing clearly ever again" hahaha
Interesting to see a space frame around engine much like a Superbike.
I am a massive Formula 1 fan but PLEASE can we have the V8 s back with sounds like the above rather than the wet fart noise we have now. Oh, and while I'm on a moan, let's get rid of this daft double points for the last race thing! Good luck Lewis!!! And Jules :(
2023 no more engines now🙁
Sad that the crappy phone (?) loses the sound
This would explain why Webber always hard car problems :P
Next up 2018 single cylinder turbos
I would like to know what they are doing porting some of the exhaust gas from the manifold under the car....look under the exhaust manifold and you will see the small pipe glowing as well....I wonder if they are sending hot exhaust gas to the front of the side pods or chin spoiler for extra downforce...
Slapbladder if I remember correctly lotus tried something like that and it didn't work out to well for them. doubt redbull would follow suit. then again Asian Newey is a genius so if anyone were to get that working real world instead of just in theory. it's be him
This goes from 0 to trouble in 0.001 seconds
RIP V8 ERA
2006 - 2013 ❤
I've come to hate the FIA now because they took away the one thing that makes F1 so much better than all other formulas, the sound of 18,000 RPM's.
Seb n webber will miss this
At last! Fuck those V8's! Bring the TURBOS back!!!!!
The lobes on that cam must not be that high as they say it don't have a lick to it or the engine is not thumping
yeaah baby !!!
:D
monster of a car
I was just thinking to my self the v6 must really be crap because I haven’t seen one warm up vid like the real engines had!
Next F1 engine will be similiar to mi lawnmower
skip to 1:08 if you want to hear something.
Dear lord what had Renault built back then ? Straight up demonic
What happens to all those engines? Its too bad they don't offer them to the public.
SECRETS
They get torn down for analysis for R&D purposes. Im guessing.
That's selfish lmao
you can buy one, BMW still sells their engines
A Player BMW sells their F1 engines ?
Alonso did this on youtube when he left Renault. Look for it. The sound is unreal. The sound in this clip sounds like air, not that impressive. I'm sure it's just the device it was recorded on. Anyway, look for the Alonso clip.
It kills me that there's nobody sitting in the cockpit, and everything's controlled by electronics! That, and the garage floor's cleaner than dishes coming out of my dishwasher!
