As a life time rider and a 3 year tuner and repair employee at a small resort in New York. Every thing he said is sound and great information and advice for both skis and snowboards. I’ll definitely recommend him for a tune if anyone is in his area. Thank you for sharing!! Get out and ride everyone!!
What a great demo of the process. I love that you straight up used not just a brass brush to help clear out the excess wax, but a steel brush, too (nice mention of the directional component). I wondered for a long time why some people are so against using a steel brush to help get excess wax out that is down in the structure, instead of just wax at the surface. Clearly, it works for you and your customers.
Thanks for this Kev! Been looking for a good tuning vid with detailed explanations of how to use different things in the kit. I’ve been waxing my boards for two years now and kind of just winging it, so this is going to help immensely
Tip for anyone using p tex. When using this system, apply tape on either side of where the scrape is prior to applying the p tex. This will ensure that it only gets into the damaged groove rather than having it be where it really doesn’t belong. It also looks a lot cleaner when you do this method. Happy shredding everyone 👊🏻
Damn, that looked so good when he was all done with it. That tip about how to get the rust off the edges and also sharpening the scraper was pretty clutch. Great video, man!
New Mexico is also home to the southern most ski resort in the US. Definitely recommend. Great view of the White Sands National Monument and the Valley of Fire from the top of the resort.
Love this video and I am also hoping to hit up Taos and New Mexico next season and would love to meet you if schedules align. Been a long time follower of your channel and hope to make it to Whistler someday after seeing all content there.😊
New to snowboarding here, I just got my board. I just wanna ask if this condition is solely is due to lack of snow. The rental I got looked way better after 8 days without waxing. Getting this rough in just 5 days sound a little bit harsh to me.
Probably a dumb question but why do you scrape all the wax off? Like shouldn't there be some on there to have less resistance? (I've only had my board a month so I haven't waxed it yet, just curious as I'm new to all of this)
You only scrape of the excess wax that is too much. The wax that you really want on your board is kinda soaked into the base, so you don’t scrape of that wax (I‘m not a pro, these were just the things that i was told when i learned how to wax my board)
Think of it like this: If you zoom in on your base (like with a microscope) than your base will have a lot of "scratches" and holes and everything, so it isnt smooth -> more Resistance. Now all the wax does is fill in the holes and scratches therfor making the base more smooth and you have less resistance. Now the problem lies in the fact that the Wax itself is pretty "sticky" when put on snow. It is only the combination of Base and wax that makes it glide well. And therefore you want to scrape of the layer of wax that seperates the Base-Wax-Combination from the snow
Most of explanation you got down here. But it's also a difference if you have extruded base (EB) or sintered base(SB). EB is made with heat and is like one piece, SB is done under high pressure and is porous. So it holds more wax. Some boards also have structure. Structure pushes water out and if you leave wax in there the structure won't work. Water you ask? When you cruise down, the friction makes a thin lair of water. I was about 4-5y.o when learning waxing, am 40 now. So I've done it numerous times so2say. It's not that hard but U need patience. A good groundwork shows in the final result. Like groundwork on a car body before the paint job so to say. All my boards r SB. So I always take the bindings off, or at least loosen screws, so that there's no stress on the inserts. To avoid "base-dimps"(seen that happen😅). Tip to tail with a little wax trail behind the iron. Then I go tail to tip, and a final run tip to tail again. Trail should be few inches long behind the iron, consistent speed
I never scrape. Too messy and too much time. Plus the extra wax lasts longer and adds an extra layer of protection. I know im bout to start a war in the comments, but my take is: if you are racing and want the fastest base for 1 day then scrape, but if you just want a smooth ride that lasts multiple days dont bother
@@JohnDouqhhahahaha...yeah man, you're about to start a war here😂. But after scraping, it lasts about three to five days depending on the wax. HotSouce says that their is good up to a week (according 2 them that is). But how do you get an even base if not scraped off?? There's no way you getting that with an iron. Or maybe if your iron is wide as your snowboard
Good tips, shame about letting all the graphite wax scrapings ust blow all over the parking lot and elsewhere though. Doesn't that just end up in the run off as well?
I don't scrape all my wax off, I just level high spots and then brush it. Spring wax will get ripped right off in the morning if you have crusty groomers.
Great job fantastic info!. Kevin I’ve rode MtHood for over 30 years driving down from Seattle. I love it. New Mexico rocks. Check out Ski Santa Fe and Angel Fire Kev!!! Pajarito and Sipapu is a blast too Keep on shredding!
Shouldn't your board be warm like room temp before you wax it. Someone told me to never wax a cold board. Just wondering if there is any truth to that or not
Easier solution... Phantom DPS. One treatment. I have it on all my custom boards. Lasts the life of the base. It penetrates the entire base sheet so even if you scratch the base - it's fine. Just rub with the polish pads provided for the fastest smoothest glide. I glide past everyone on the flats. Sure you can apply a wax - if you like the zen feeling of waxing. PTex yes, grind the edges yes. Wax - never again.

Shouldn't your board be warm like room temp before you wax it. Someone told me to never wax a cold board. Just wondering if there is any truth to that or not
It should be room temp for bessst results yea - but they’re at hood so it’s probs not that cold out
Aaron is legit.
what temp do you run the iron when applying it to the board?
So long as it’s not smoking you should be good! If it’s smoking then it’s too hot
How was the riding?
The spring was insane! Board was super fast after the tune as well!
no edge polishing?
I think he did at the start
what grit sanding block?
Great tips from top guy. Thanks dude.
whic brand p-tex is best can i learn ur experience please
So it's not an issue the way he used the sandpaper and scuffed up the top of the board near the edge?
Is rusting edges what usually ends up ruining a board?
No , rocks are
Awesome job
Any suggestions for a good tuning kit?
You know you're an Oregonian when you recognize Timberline by the parking lot in the first 10 seconds 😂
Legendary parking lot!
Is p-tex the same as glue sticks?
No, it’s a polymer stick.

how hot do you want your iron to be?
Just don’t let it smoke and u should be good. If it’s smoking it’s too hot
How many days b4 u rewax?
Three or four

what did he use to remove the rust off the edges?
Use a Gummi stone and alcohol

Ooooo I’m hyper fixating the fuuuck out of this, great video tons of good info
Not making the video 13:37 long is a missed chance there!
Flawless
I dont agree w/ the removing the tuning on the tip and tail. When your on a STEEP STEEP icy runs I like the whole board to grab tbh
That k2 board looks like it needs more than a 'quick tune'. Thing looks like it needs a full base grind. 😬
Its had a long year!
YO! "the first rule of tuners club is don't talk about tuners club"!
The rotobrush saves my shoulder
But the graphite wax acts as a dirt repellent among other things
Wouldn’t rubbing alcohol dry the fuck out of your base??
Not sure bout this guys technique. The ptex was too much Fire and he did not appear to use any Gob oil!?
That is a night and day difference with that waxing.
Isn’t rubbing alcohol highly flammable? I’d keep a hot iron far away from rubbing alcohol.
Damp (water) rag works good enough.
You'd need about 400 degrees Celcius, a waxing iron runs closer to 130C iirc.
@@ZesPak Sorry. I'm not fckin Frech. I don't know what 400 degree Celcius is
It’s not that big of a worry

a generator to run an iron lmao
