My mother was diagnosed with psychopathy. She had some of these traits but not all. She mostly wanted to do the right thing in the outside world because that was “logical” but she was a very abusive mother with 0 empathy for my sister and I. It was very confusing and I’m still realizing the depth of the insanity I went through as a child because this was my mother. Thank you for making this video.

Being raised by a psychopath (my mother) was an interesting and very dysfunctional ride. I have done extensive reading in my adult life on the subject of ASPD to learn tools of dealing with her, and have been somewhat successful in setting up boundaries as an adult that I lacked as a child. She is a good person, who tries to do the right things, but it is clear that in her mind ahe is the center of everything in the world, and that to her, no one is capible of understanding her, or being as important as her.
Even with boundries set up over many years now, it is truly impressive the skill in manipulation a true psychopath has, and how often I fall into old patterns without realizing it.
People with ASPD are still people, who (for the most part) want to be good, they just don't know how, and it is really important that you don't end up sacrificing yourself to try and teach them. Helping is okay, as long as you yourself are not being lost in the process.

This is why I am always suspicious of particularly charming people, especially if they flatter me ... there was one coworker of mine who seemed to agree with me on everything I was saying when we were having a coffee (not in a super obvious way either, he would deftly reformulate the idea and respond in a different way like it was his own opinion and he was honestly pretty good at this) , but eventually I said: "you do a lot of mirroring, don't you?' He said "heh, you're the first person who's ever called me out on that..". Funny thing is, since I found out later that he was a psychopath, I'm pretty sure that must've been a lie, much like almost everything else he ever said.
I get shudders remembering how I ALmost dated him but fortunately I dodged that bullet!

When you read this, you need to be aware that I have GAD (generalized anxiety dissorder), and fairly severe at that. I had a customer that turned out to be a psychopath. I did the accounting for his bussines, and when I detected something that added up to financial crime, I told them they had to find someone else. And I told the dude why. I also did what the law here in Sweden requier of accountants and reported the customer to the law enforcement dudes. This resulted in me and my wife recieving death threats and the company owner comming home to us to "reason with me" with the help of some edge tools (knife). In the end, I cracked and ended up at home to mentally sick to work. That in turn resulted in my business going under. The upside? Everyone - from authorities to other customers to the bank where our mortgage are was super nice and super understanding when I showed them the reason why I got a meltdown and went sick. I got a lot of help to get back to a working life, and we didnt need to sell our home. Oh, the bloody psychopath? He ended up in prison for a lot of reasons, and he lost basically everything he ever had. I think he is out now, but I know for a fact that he is forbidden to have any roll in a company board or even try to run any type of business again for what is basically life. It has been a little hell for me and my wife, but in the end justice and the law enforcment worked.

I understand extreme GAD, it can make life very challenging. I am very glad for you that everyone believed you, they were accommodating and agreeable. And you were able to get the requisite mental health so you were able to rebuild your life. That is wonderful!
While reading this, I thought, "This is unlikely in America." Here, I'm thinking, the psychopath gets away with it and the person and family are the ones who are ruined. One reason is that mental health problems and treatment are shunned, seen as personal weakness and failure. You can see how this would explain many things about America.
More than that, perhaps psychopaths are idolized to some degree, and people live in fear of them and are reluctant to stand up to them. There is less of a feeling that we are morally obligated to make an effort to go out of our way because we own a social responsibility to society.
I'm not entirely sure if this explains why I feel that, "This is unlikely in America."
Does anyone agree with me or perhaps have a better explanation? I would be interested!
Again, congratulations to you and your family. You did the right thing and I'm sure that's not easy anywhere. You did the hard work to get your life back. And, finally, you saw justice done!!!

@Hue ManI actually toyed with the idea of opening the door behind me, wish might have ended up with the same result as getting out a gun. We allways have some rescued dogs at home in the form of Pitbulls. Pitbulls are useless watching for someone that tries to steal your tv - they couldnt care less. But if someone in their pack gets agitated and threatened? Ouch! But I felt like i couldnt do that to our pups. Had my wife been alone at home, however... they were extremley defensive regarding her. Sadly, both has passed away due to old age - and they are sourly missed!

That's me and my lovely mother. She absolutely used my insecurity against me. I'm always willing to admit I may be wrong so an easy target to her. She made me question my own memory and sanity, she had me half convinced I was the maniac but I finally got up the courage to mention that to my psych (I never dared until age 30, approaching 32 now).
Last interaction, she called me 20 times at work. I deliver stuff so I'm in traffic and I don't answer the bloody phone, which I have told her a hundred times.
Got home called her back. Rejected my call 10 times, I asked WTF is going on? She began to insult me, "I don't care if you aren't feeling well blablabla and words that would lilkely get this autodeleted...)
I had two days earlier after similar incidents begged her to tone it down, that she was ruining my life, put me in such a foul mood for weeks I almost lost my job. I did actually but boss gave me another chance...
Well that was it. About 10 times I repeated the message:
You will calm down now. You will stop attacking and bullying me.
I want proof that you're not concealing your bipolar and more from the psych anymore! I want thr psychs phonenumber and I want her to go on antipsychotics.
She tells her psych she's just depressed and she can be super charming and pretend to be a wonderful person plus she's considered attractive so she gets psychs to write whatever she wants....
Or else I would block her forever and never speak to her again. She just kept insulting me...
I asked her to think very carefully if it was really worth loosing the only member of the family who still talks to her just to let off some steam.
If she needed to insist on ruining her life and mine by refusing all medication that adresses the actual issue, not just anti depressants. She likes those. I do too, thanks to her.
My psych says the laundry list is clinical depression (not responsive to SSRIs), social anxiety and possibly ptsd. Wants me to see a trauma specialist, I told him to fk off but I would think about it. He chuckled at that and gave me a link to some healthcare website were covered specialists offered spots...
Anyway I did end up blocking her that day. I felt so relieved. Her thing was to treat everyone like garbage and then play the victim because everyone was mean to her (I wonder why...) and blaming it on me, I ruined her life blablabla.
So I feel a little guilty, she has no one left now. But I warned her for years this would happen and for 5 years she managed. But she threw it all away in a day and I am done with her.
Whenever I think, maybe I should take pity I remember all those years of abuse and decide against it. My life, well being, self confidence etc... have all improved massively since breaking off all contact. I'm a crappy son, I know but she's a horrible mother so I think morally I still come out on top, not that it matters, I just can't risk loosing my job because I snap at someone after she yelled at me all night, barely intelligible manic and raving likely drunk... 31 years old bi*** I don't fall for that stuff anymore. Ibsee the manipulation and gas-lighting coming from miles away. I'm just disappointed when it turns out I was correct. I wouldn't mind being wrong on that one but she's never disappointed my worst expectations.

It was interesting that positive reinforcement was so effective with teenagers who showed psychopathic tendencies. It kind of ties back to what you said earlier about them having super charged dopamine centers. Rewarding for good behavior trains their brains that the best way to get dopamine highs is to do good. And since that dopamine high is so important for psychopaths, you're really demonstrating to them that its in their selfish best interest to do good. In the real world that is likely to continue reinforcing that trend since doing good for other people tends to lead to more good and therefore greater rewards.

    • @BikeHelmetMk2

Yep. And if you can rehabilitate 1/3rd of your criminals that way (ignoring that children below a certain age legally are not "criminals"), that means getting tough potentially creates 50% more criminals to deal with later. (Inverse of -33% is +50% for the math impaired.)

if you were wondering how i was trapped in the relationship: She dragged me through 3 false domestic lawsuits when i tried to leave by hurting herself and then calling the police. more than once attacked me with a knife while drunk. i have a severed tendon in my hand. Domestic violence shelters told me they only had space for women, or just didn't take me seriously. Police laughed at me when i tried to go for help, when i tried to insist the told me "you don't want us to investigate, because if she contradicts your claim we'd be arresting you instead. Men are not necessarily much larger than their wives or girlfriends. And even if they are, if they’re not willing to dish out violence against their partner, they’ll be victims. Nobody wants to talk about this.

Panic attacks dissapeared completely went from 5mg Alprazolam + 4mg Clonazepam a day to benzo free soon after. Anxiety has only appeared possibly as butterfly's in stomach once since due to what I believe to be a female psychopath lol.
This was 6 years ago accepting myself as already dead freed me to myself however those around me seem to take issue to it. I'm never on time anymore it feels as if when I'm needed at a time that time it self run 10× faster and I don't really care about their time aside anyway.
Also have aged so little it can not be noticed physically sense its trippy.

    Different failures of empathy:
    1. You are not intellectually capable of imagining how you would feel as the other person.
    2. It simply doesn't occur to you to look from the other's perspective.
    3. You are capable of looking from another's perspective, but you just don't effen care.
    4. You care, but your ingrained, habitual pattern is to not be empathetic.
    5. You care about the other person's perspective, but you see their concerns as minor compared to a greater good (religion, political movement, or whatever).
    6. You actually get off on the suffering of others.
    7. You totally get the feelings of others, and you use that understanding to manipulate them for your own selfish purposes.
    8. You could be anything from (1) to (7), or be normal, depending on what kind of day you're having.
Nobody ever said human behavior is simple.

They do not care about other people perspective or feelings, they observe behavior and make deductions. Oh I am supposed to act this way when someone is sad, I am supposed to care about other people when they are hurt so I will use these words like those people I saw on that movie. They mimic sane and normal behavior to get what they need and want and to blend in. They do love hurting others. They find out what you love and like so they can take it from you or keep it from you. It brings them great joy knowing they made you feel bad, or devastated. They love drama cuz that gives them advantage in interactions. Most of us get worn down and stressed with drama, they thrive on it. They dont care if it goes on and on. We are striving for peace and harmony, they love things stirred up. I do believe "normal" people can develop "sociopathic" or psychopathic behaviors/tendencies over time, due to their experiences, but if you're worrying if you'll end up being a psychopath, I can say: no. You don't have to worry about that. Psychopathy (antisocial personality disorder) is a personality disorder that affects someone's whole personality, that means it's who they are as a person. You can only "become" a psychopath (or a sociopath, which is not a scientific term) when you undergo a change in your personality, which doesn't happen very easily, unless you have some kind of a brain damage or a tumor.

@@221b-l3t People talk about the Scandinavian prisons as being a "luxury lifestyle", but they are really not. First of, you always see the 2-3 same few example prisons that are being used (Halden being the most showed), and those special prisons run test-programs because they are designed that way and can afford it, much more than regular Scandinavian prisons.
Also the special prisons like Halden are supposed to mimic more of a college dormitory lifestyle, though one where your day is strictly regulated, since at the end of the day, it's still a prison.
Also if the inmates really found Scandinavian prisons so luxurius, why are most of them not coming back, or wanting to come back? Because they got a great balance between being humane while not *too* lenient. So while of course nobody is scared of going back to Halden prison, they still don't want to.

This is just evidence that humans are all psychopaths. The only reason we differentiate with labels and think some are and some aren't is due to the perceived actions on a case by case basis. If a psychopath never in their lifetime does "a psychopathic thing", does that make them not a psychopath? If so, is a person who thinks identically before and after they do their first "psychopathic thing" not a psychopath before they do it, and is a psychopath after they do it? Or were they a psychopath the whole time? So many questions. So little reason. Have a great day!

Sociopath and Psychopath are outdated terms and both would be considered Antisocial Personality Disorder, the most common difference between what the mainstream would know about the difference is that Psychopaths are by nature (due to genetic or other physical anomalies) unable to have empathy towards others, where as Sociopaths are those that by nurture (being raised in an extremely violent environment, or other environmental factors) forced them to naturally develop psychopathic behaviors as a defense mechanism in order to survive.

Ron Schlorff Because normal is defined as having characteristics tending toward average. Height, for example. Add up everybody’s height and divide by the number of people and you get average. So if someone mostly has characteristics close to average, they’re considered normal. However, there is a concept called “standard deviation.” When you compare people to the average, you will find that almost everybody has some deviation, some “weirdness.” If you measure each person’s deviation and then again divide by the number of people, you get standard deviation. Then you can consider people with very little deviation to be weird because they’re too normal.

Yeah... this topic is such a minefield, and tabloid 'how to' videos are a dime a dozen on YT because they get clicks. It riles people up and gives them the illusion that they're able to diagnose people they don't like armed with a short checklist, which is both flattering and incredibly convenient since they don't need to check their own behavior. And before you know it, you have a more widespread and potentially just as harmful form of psychological abuse.
Even seasoned professionals can find it very tricky to determine exactly what kind of psychopathology they're faced with, and they routinely argue, not just over the details, but the validity of entire classifications (something the history of the diagnostics manual clearly shows). Psychopathy comes in a great many shades and variations with different labels that intertwine with other forms again. Added to that, the exact nature of the human psyche is still not entirely clear, meaning that behavior patterns and the corresponding brain activity, will always be judged based on context, both in the impossibly complex interactions between multiple psyches, but also in the zeitgeist and the current expectations based on the values and needs de jour.
Don't get me wrong. If you bump into a particularly cold, dangerous, unpredictable or abusive individual; by all means run away. Just don't convince yourself that you're necessarily able to clinically label them, and be equally on guard with people who seem to love doing just that.

Let's hear it for the DSM-5! Remember: "homosexuality" used to be listed as a disease. That sort of idea in the history of psychiatry is a good lesson as to why classifications are very imperfect. Actually, this latest edition of the 'Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders' does have quite a few improvements. Like Asperger's being on the spectrum. However, we are so far from understanding the mind. "It's complicated!" lol

I know a person with psychopathy (now the umbrella term for this stuff) that is aware and trying to be better. As backwards as it may sound because I'm autistic, she's my best friend. I'm naturally going to keep making sure I won't get hurt because I know the tactics and I'll gently call her out if it starts. She helps me understand and navigate social situations I would be too nervous to be in or understand. We're on opposite ends of this mind spectrum but we work together and use our strengths to help the other where we're weakest, it's a mutually beneficial relationship. Neither of us connect well with others. We definitely have a third party mediate any fights and then talk it out like civil adults.
Also yeah she does like bitter things. Specifically bitter chocolates. Like those really dark cocoa chocolates. I feel like if I could taste the word bitter it would taste like a 100% organic cocoa chocolate bar. I'm the opposite and I prefer to eat strongly sweet tasting stuff like fruits or yellow bell peppers. I don't care what people say, as a vegetarian I can tell you that 100% the colours taste different. Like how you tell the different flavors of regular water. They do all have their own taste. I also strongly prefer the hottest peppers. I easy ate many California Reaper (1.5-2 mil scoville) grilled cheeses when I had the cheese. Do not plan to leave the house if you eat it. The fire that goes in is nothing like the one that comes out lmao the true test of tolerating hot peppers.

My ex is a psychopath. I've said to friends that after 5 years of intensive daily research into his terrible behaviors and issues, I have a psychology degree from Google.
Well, the daily article reading & videos, reading blogs etc started about six months in. Maybe closer to a year. I came to the conclusion that he has NPD, Narcissistic Personality Disorder. As time went on, after more research, after learning more about him, I had to conclude that he was a sociopath. In retrospect, I think I was trying to minimize his mental issues, "yes he has NPD but thank God he's not a sociopath!"
When I had to admit to myself that he _is_ a sociopath, I thought to myself "well he is a sociopath, but thank God he's not a psychopath!"
You guessed it, Not only did he display an incredibly selfish and controlling nature, a complete and utter lack of empathy, zero affection, no support or validation, and frequent uncontrollable rages... not only did he do all those things, all pointing to a sociopath, but much of it was premeditated. Aw, crap.
I realized that he enjoys hurting people, and plans it ahead of time. So finally I had to conclude that he's a psychopath.
He was very badly sexually abused by his own parents. There is a pretty clear connection between childhood sexual abuse and NPD, sociopathy, and psychopathy. So that is something to bear in mind, if the person in your life endured child abuse. My ex did, just the most extreme and horrible you can imagine, from age 8-15.

There are ways to tell if someone is a "psychopath" - this usually falls under the rubric of a type of "personality disorder", or more specifically, an emotionally or socially abusive person. One of the most important risk factors (more important than genetics) is abusive or negligent parenting. Huge topic, but there are some great resources out there for identifying these people, my favorite being "The Verbally Abusive Relationship: How to Recognize it and How to Respond", by Patricia Evans. (The title of the book is too narrow a description of the breadth of the topics that are covered. It DEFINITELY addresses psychopaths.). Highly recommended.
