When I was a kid, there were these two bald eagles that would build a nest every year near the river by my grandparents house.
Grandpa called the wildlife people (I don't know who exactly),they said he must be mistaken as they were extinct where we live. He sent them photos and they still said it couldn't be.
Over the years many people, including a forest ranger and a newspaper reporter called in their sightings and sent in pictures. Finally, after about 15 years some scientist guy was down there studying the fish in the river and "discovered" the family of eagles. Now, it's official, what was already common knowledge. There are bald eagles near many of the lakes and rivers in my county.
I'm basically trying to say that just because the "right" people haven't seen something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I'm way behind to do this but I do know of a really interesting explanation for several crypids: Old old folklore. As in Ice Age old. It sounds a little crazy but we actually have instances of stories making it from that far back: the aboriginal people of Australia actually have stories documenting a rise in sea levels about 20,000 years ago. There's also a story that I believe is Inuit about the king bear/ weasel bear: A massive polar bear that destroyed a village. We thought it was just a myth for a long time, and then remains of an animal fitting its description were found confirming the story.
For an example from the list the Orang Pendek sounds a lot like Homo Florensis, a short hominid native to Indonesia that overlaps with modern humans!
It obviously doesn't catch everything but I think that it's an interesting idea to consider! Ice age creatures get STRANGE.

This reminds me of a theory I have heard about the human fear of dragons and scorpions. The first humans were around during the time of the last dinosaur-like creatures. So early humans had to be careful not to be eaten by "dragons." There was a prehistoric animal called the sea scorpion. Its ecological niche was sort of like the alligator. Early humans would go down to the edge of the water and be grabbed and pulled in by the sea scorpions! So through genetic instincts and through folklore passed down for a million years, modern people are still scared when they see the shape of a dragon or scorpion.

    • @alfredfabulous3640

      @@davidbrasher3595 Bullshit!
Sea scorpions lived way before the first mammals existed (and were gone the time they finally did turn up), that is even before the arrival of dinosaurs!
In fact, sea scorpions could have been amongst the first creatures to go on dry land!
So far before pthipthalik - the fish/ampibium like creature that ventured on to the new environment and ultimately become ancestor of us all!

I think one of the reasons we’re so interested in Cryptides is because we actually know so much now. That nothing really surprises us anymore, and we’re secretly hoping/wanting to be amazed by something if not by anything at all.

    • @CRneu
      @CRneu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

i think a very large part of why cryptids are so pervasive is a lot simpler: scammers. There is easy money in it so people perpetuate the myths to sell things. Then human psychology takes over and folks make it part of their personality to be more tribal/part of a group.
At least in my experience here in the PNW, the folks that "believe" in bigfoot make it a large part of their outfacing personality. They have stickers on their cars, they post about it on social media, they watch the history channel all day and repeat what they hear. They're now part of a community of "enlightened" believers. When in reality they're just being scammed into buying merchandise or "research".

And I mean deep, not just where a coyote could dig it up and a hunter discover a skull (apparently coyotes tend to bite at the neck and pop heads of dead migrants off and run away with them for a quick meal.) If you get tired digging the hole, think about how long you'll be sitting in prison regretting your laziness. As long as the recently disturbed ground remains unnoticed in whatever remote area you choose. I wonder how many missing people were just buried remotely; in true crime shows murder victims are discovered a shallow or nonexistent grave. My friend used to deal weed and once we found multiple partial sets of human teeth stuffed inside the bricks of pot. I wonder if they were the only remains left if you disposed of a body on a pig farm or dissolved it in acid Breaking Bad style. Maybe some cartel member got creative?

Unicorns are pointy horses. They don't have one corn though, for some reason, they have one horn. They are magical creatures. The only one we've come across was a refugee from the Land of the Faeries, the Queen's pet. It stank atrociously, and was maddened on reaching the "real" dimension of the Disc to find that time - to which it was not ordinarily subject - was passing and that the sky was only blue...and the Queen's unthinking cruelty was no longer in sole command of its head. In short, it was insane - as evidenced by its charging Granny Weatherwax - a thing no mortal creature would ever do. Animals are extremely good at knowing what would be more-than-suicidal. The unicorn was taken by Granny Weatherwax to Jason Ogg's Smithy, where she had him shoe it with silver horseshoes

Hey! I'm from Paraguay! Funny thing about the Ache is that early anthropologists thought they were descendants of the Vikings. That theory was supported by some rare engravings found in the Jasuka Venda archeology site. The engravings were found to be something totally different and the Ache origins still remains a mystery (they are from the Guarani family but their language has some words that aren't Guarani in origin and that proved very hard to trace). A sad fact about the Ache is that they were legally hunted in here, sanctioned by the state in the early days of the expansion not many years ago.

Hey in America they found Irish ogum engravings bt the weird thing is that there's an Irish myth that tells of a monk who set of for a new land with 11 other monks when he returned he described floating pillars of crystal and an island of blacksmiths throwing molten rocks at them now the crystal pillars are icebergs and the island of blacksniths was Iceland and then in the 00s a man sailed from America to Ireland using the route in a traditional Irish dugout

There may be another group of whites who made it to the Americas: part of the Olmecs. They left imagery of blonde-bearded whites along with round-headed West African blacks. I'd love to type about it, but I'm going to be in pain if I don't stop typing so maybe see my other comment for some more details & hooks.

"Dobharchú", literally "water hound" is an old Irish word for "otter". It's pronounced dower-choo, ch not as hard as a k, but it's a sound English speakers don't use, so I guess koo is close, just say it from the back of your throat. I don't know of any dialect that would pronounce it dubber, but I'm not very familiar with dialects north of Mayo. Dobhar is a very old word for water, still used in Welsh. "Lough" is pronounced lock, although it's got another soft sound at the end not used in English. Lock is the closest you will manage if you're only ever spoken English.

Your movie idea sounds like a great movie man! Although, I thought it was gonna go a different direction.
I was imagining the hunter guy was gonna show up for the hunt, the kid was gonna transform, and the hunter dude was gonna end up killing the kid while he was in Bigfoot form, and the mount the Bigfoot head. Then the Bigfoot head turns back into the kid's head after its mounted (don't ask me why it took so long to revert... Hollywood...) and now the dude wakes up one morning to find a kid's head stuffed and mounted on his living room wall. He screams, the wife wakes up and sees it, they pukes and she cries and calls 911, and he realizes he can't _possibly_ convince the cops of what actually happened, so he goes on the lam and now the movie is a procedural crime drama about catching a psychopath who was actually just a decent guy who made an honest mistake.
I guess you could say I had some assumptions, but honestly I think it'd be a pretty good movie either way, right? Lol.

I love the idea that some cryptids are maybe, perhaps, kinda real… as others have said here, there are many creatures alive today who would have blown our minds hundreds of years ago. And so much of our planet is yet unexplored that I have a hard time believing there aren’t any mysteries left…
Also, love your Werefoot movie idea 😂

I was driving home one winter night in southern Ontario, Canada. Yes it was snowing and visibility was compromised, but it wasn't a raging snowstorm, just lots of pretty white flakes straight down. I saw an animal coming out of the field on my right and it was tan colored, so I thought "deer" and slowed my car in case it crossed the road. When it hit the road maybe 6 meters in front of my car it was about the size of a golden retriever and moved just like a cat with a long solid tail. It disappeared into a stand of trees on the opposite side of the road and never looked my way. I sat there for a minute thinking that wasn't a deer or a dog. I think it was a cougar, but they are no longer supposed to reside in southern Canada. I guess this one never got the memo.

Hey Joe, love your videos please keep 'em coming my friend! Ok, since you asked I'm going to share a story I've only told to a couple of people. I completely understand those that won't believe me in fact if it hadn't happened to me I wouldn't believe it either. Also, I absolutely love all kinds of mysteries especially of the paranormal variety though i'm mostly skeptical by nature. This is the only paranormal thing I've ever witnessed, I am not insane, and I'm completely sober now as I was at the time this happened:
The date is kinda hazy, fall of either '02 or '03, but i worked at a boarding school as an overnight dorm parent in Anadarko, Oklahoma. There wasn't much to do other than find ways to stay awake. It was about 3:30a.m. and I'm kinda bored so i decide to empty the trash cans early, normally one of the last things i do before i leaving at 8:15. There wasn't much in them maybe half a small sack wrapped in a large bag. I had to take it out to the dumpster across the street through a small parking lot next to another dorm directly to the west of it. So I'm bouncing along swinging the trash bag in a circular motion sorta humming as i go. I'm about halfway there and something catches my eye on the left side, in my peripheral vision i see what i instantly think is a boy standing in the leafless tree that leads up to the 2nd story of a window into the girls dorm. I work in the boys dorm so as one can imagine catching teenagers out isn't that shocking, in fact my initial reaction was to smile as I'm turning my head to say something to them. when i stopped and looked upon the "boy" what i saw i can only describe now as a shadow person. I know I know but hear me out please...
Before this if you asked me what a shadow person was i would of said i don't know and please leave me alone. But since this happened i have researched to the best of my ability what it is and it still frightens me at times. What i saw was maybe 7 feet long, very black, and it had no features at all. it actually looked like a stretched out dark shadow. It turned to look at me and quicker than i could even follow with my head the creature slithered down the tree and darted off into the woods nearby. It did in three strides would have taken me at least 20 running full speed. I just stood there kinda in shock at first then quickly became scared shitless. Maybe the most frightening part was i thought i saw a girl in the window talking to it before ducking down as i was turning my head. For the second or two afterwards as i stood there staring at the window i did not see anyone, so I'm not actually sure whether she was there or not. I quickly took the trash to the dumpster and sprinted back into the boys dorm and tried to gather myself. It was a long night after that and i was very eager to leave the campus. In fact I quit the school and moved to Oklahoma City soon after. Not entirely because of this incident but in retrospect maybe more than i realized at the time.
I was wondering if you have ever heard of this phenomena and have any theory as to what i could have seen? I've since learned it is a very popular "myth" in that region especially among the many Native Americans in that area.
Ok well thank you for your time sorry this ran a little longer than i had intended.
    -Stephen A. Moon

My family found a cocoon on a bush in our yard when I was a kid. We put it in a jar, thinking a butterfly or moth would emerge. Instead we got something that looked like a pale brown, sorta upright sitting lobster with wings it kept folded on its back (only saw a little bit of wing underside a few times and remember it being quite colorful-yellow and purple). It also kept "laying" what looked like little green seeds. They were hard and had bright green juice in them. I have a distinct memory of my mom smashing them open with a rock, very perplexed because they looked like something you'd see growing from a trees in the area. It didn't seem to be poop or eggs, so what he hell was it?
We kept the "bug" in a cleaned out 4-pound Skippy Peanut Butter jar with air holes drilled in the lid. And it pretty much filled up the whole thing. The guy was larger than any bug I'd ever seen. The protrusions (antennae?) on its face were very lobster-like. Hug dark brown eyes. Bumps on its face. Quite an amazingly strange creature.
We let it go after a couple of days, placing it in a tree so it didn't starve, having not eaten the leaves or grass we placed in the jar. There's no insects like that in Nebraska that I know of, and we've never another one since. Mutation or cryptid, I'll never know unless someone can identify this bug of all bugs. I wish now I had counted its legs! It might have helped in determining taxonomy.
I've seen a couple of strange creatures in the same area, but nothing like this. One was a giant fly that was a little bigger than a Matchbox car. There was a green, furless caterpillar that ended up in a bush out front once. It was bulky, three to four inches in length, and had sinister black eyes. It made strange "grumpy" sounds when my dad threatened it with a stick (which it bit). That one probably is a known animal and likely came from the cornfield just across the road, though I've never seen one since. We also once caught a giant toad that was so huge it knocked over the 5-galleon bucket we trapped it in. Nope, it wasn't a frog, just a huge toad. But none of these animals have come close to baffling me like the cryptid in the cocoon.

Coelacanths... thought to be extinct until a lady caught 'a living fossil' :)

The Natural History Museum in London has models of animals on the wall, with living species facing one way and extinct ones the other; the coelacanth faces the wrong way.

    • @michaelwoodhams7866
      @michaelwoodhams7866 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It is related, but not quite the same thing. There were no legends of coelacanths stalking the night. There were ancient fossils, which, given the lack of recent fossils, were naturally interpreted as a long-extinct species.
Wikipedia says "Cryptozoology is a pseudoscience and subculture that aims to prove the existence of entities from the folklore record, such as Bigfoot, the chupacabra, or Mokele-mbembe. Cryptozoologists refer to these entities as cryptids, a term coined by the subculture." So by this definition, coelacanths would not count as a found cryptid.
This raises the issue of another not-quite-cryptid scenario: an animal accepted as real but generally thought to be extinct, but which some enthusiasts believe or hope might be still existing somewhere. I'm not sure if there is a term for this, but I think there have been a few cases of these being found.
Update - the term "Lasarus taxon" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lazarus_taxon seems to cover both the coelacanth case (missing for large periods of fossil record and then turn up again) and the "I'm not extinct yet!" case Ii.e. rediscovered). This still doesn't cover what to call a species that I think will be a Lasarus but everyone else thinks is just extinct.

    • @turtle2720
      @turtle2720 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The best breakdown ever on Squatch was done by Lloyd Pye (rip): the Starchild guy. We know quite a lot about Sasquatch, and even why it's hard, but not impossible to find.
    It boils down like this:
    1. Perfectly adapted to the environment to the point of being the apex. No natural predators.
    2. We know animals communicate via language. Squatch seem to be at least Dolphin level which is super high.
    3. They presumably bury their dead and build teepee like structures and break trees as sign post type communication.
    4. They are omnivore.
    5. They live solitary and in small family clans being of about 3 to 4 females, some Cubs, and one Male.
    6. The predominant sightings are female Squatch and they hunt and gather similar to lions: females hunt and gather while males protect the children.
    6. They bury their feces for the same reason primitive humans did: safety from predators. Bears and mountain lions are not stupid to feces freshness tracking . Squatch habitually cover their tracks like ancient humans, especially for sleeping purposes.
    7. They are nomadic.

Particularly the Olympic Peninsula and much of British Columbia. These evergreen forests are _dense_, And humans have set foot in so little... I live in Oregon, and the forests in th S/SW, though they have been heavily logged, are still mostly unexplored.
There are many cryptic creatures that have appeared in the stories and traditions of indigenous people so strongly that there has to be something going on. Much like how nearly every area of the world has a story of a cataclysmic flood, these stories of creatures have too many commonalities to be dismissed.

So a species of hominids surviving in the endless forests somewhere in North America? I mean we find weird and new creatures all the time, even in already well known places. So one of our relatives holding out is not the most unlikely possibility. I mean, we have a duck billed poisonous beaver thing that lays eggs living in Australia.

You know I've often wondered if maybe some cryptids WERE a real species that went extinct and are now either sitting at the bottom of a lake or in a dense ass forest. I mean A LOT of the cryptid stories started long ago, yes there are more modern ones but many of them are hundreds of years old. So who's to say they didn't actually see something that was in the process of going extinct, it got pushed into the annals of history and hundreds of years later people jump to the most unlikely answer because it's fun or mass hysteria. Like he said we have a deep rooted feeling about things that could be hiding out in the dark or nigh unexplored areas of the world, we WANT it to be bigfoot or whatever so we can say we saw/found it. Then two-hundred years from now someone finds a 500-year-old skeleton and everyone's like "Ohhhh...so it was basically the bison of its day".

Your brain can apply the feeling of reality to imagination. This often happens in child brains, which is why you probably have a memory of seeing something that you know never existed. I remember being put to bed and seeing a classic green and warty witch nose peeking out from the bathroom door. Not real, but completely cemented in my brain.
What people think they see and what’s real are not equal. And with all the entertainment showing ghosts and monsters, it lays the foundation for people to ‘see’ something.

It starts making more sense if they were cold-blooded, because the impact that wiped them out would have kicked up dust clouds that would have dimmed the sun for decades.

I had read something at one point that supposedly beaked dinosaurs (aka birds) were more effective at filling certain niches (such as scavenging seeds), whereas the toothed dinosaurs (non-avian) were outcompeted by mammals, etc... in such appropriate niches. I believe beaks and a lack of bony tails (and perhaps more porous bones) are the big separators between the avian dinosaurs and their close dinosaur relatives such as the dromaeosaurs (velociraptor, etc...).

I live in the mountains of Colorado. When I walk outside at night, I keep an eye out for mountain lions, club in hand. Just recently we had a jogger attacked by one. Fortunately for the jogger, it was a young lion (meaning small) and he was able to literally choke it to death. Unfortunately, the jogger still ended up torn up pretty badly. Good news, he survived the encounter.

Back in the late 19th century, a lieutenant in the British Army was attacked by a leopard in his tent (the officer's tent, not the leopard's :)). He was a big guy and managed to choke it to death. But he was in a pretty bad way from the animal's claws. This was in what is now Zimbabwe, I believe. A local Bantu tribe found him, and their "medicine man" (or whatever they called them at the time) nursed him back to health: it took six months.

I've lived, and worked, in a very remote area of the Pacific northwest for all of my adult life (30 years). There is definatley enough "hidden/hardly explored" areas to support bigfoot. I don't believe they currently exist, but it's highly probable that the sasquach went extinct recently...like 100-1000 years ago. Also I'm a regular deer hunter, and there being no physical remains for a large animal out here is very likley too.

Maybe up in the northern reaches of BC and Saskatchewan, but these days pretty much everywhere else in the PNW, trailheads are stuffed with parked cars, and it's actually pretty hard to go anywhere without running into the inevitable hiker, mountain biker, backpacker, hunter, birder, kayaker, whatever.

I agree that the no remains being found is problematic, but you did state that you were a hunter for over 30 years, have you ever found a dead mountain lion? I know a lot of hunters, being one myself, and no one has ever found a dead mountain lion, yet we know they exist.
