  • In this video, i diagnose a problem of a BMW stuck in park only when cold, it is setting an electrical code for solenoid 1. I have the Valvebody on the bench and we go through the process of ohming the solenoids to find the one at fault. Thanks for watching

    Great video Mr.Gary. I have 2007 530i. please can you show how to put back and the transmission service on these vehicles. in your opinion whats the service for them to last long time. thank you for your great explanations .

      I would service these every 30K miles, install a new pan/filter(the pan is usually plastic with the filter built in) use life guard 6 fluid

    I have same issue on 528I 2008. Once car is warm I can shift out of park. Where can I get this service. So Cal San Bernardino

    I have a similar problem... E91 came up with transmission fault while driving, then it would not get out of park... Got the car, redone wiring because it touched the exhaust and 4-5 wires were stuck to the dpf, cleared codes and now i get 4E86, 4E87 shift lock, and A0B6 on CAS. Should i find a used wiring for the gearbox, or what should i check next? Thank you

      Are those solenoid codes?

      @@GaryFerraro Yes, solenoid valve 3 and solenoid valve 4 (shift lock) The code on CAS is related to the shift lock. I powered the shift lock solenoid in the shifter and it works... could it be the valves? and no relation to the burnt wiring? Could the burnt wiring affected the TCU?

      @@ied3vil I don't think solenoid 3 and 4 are shift lock solenoids, does it say, pressure control solenoid valve 3 as a definition?

      @@GaryFerraro Also researching i kept finding this:
      Generally, those two faults (4E86 & 4E87) indicate issues with Solenoid Valves #3 & #4, but if both faults were saved at same time, it is likely there is an issue with the wiring in the area of the Gear Indicator, particularly if someone disassembled or damaged something in that area (shift lever area).

    i have a doozy for you.....been working hard on it ..no change
    I got a zf6hp21 with a e shift transmission on a 2008 535i. It is acting all sorts of funny. I ran 12 volts to all of the solenoids and they all seem to be actuating appropriately.
    basically. will not shift into park, but when its in drive or reverse it wont rev past 1500-2000 rpms and will not budge at all forward or backwards.
    WHEN PLACED IN NEUTRAL IT MOVES WHEN GIVING GAS GENTLY FORWARD
    getting error code 507D and A0B1
    i have protool app and inpa.. reset codes multiple times with those codes poping back up.
    i dropped and drained fluid, cleaned valve body, replaced bridge seal( old one was fine) and then put back together. reinstalled and put back together with new fluid..
    still have same symptoms.
    even tried new battery..
    at a complete loss.

      @@hugewingsfan8 yes, welded internals. Replaced transmission.

      Got hot and melted/cracked the gears and seized the transmission.

    so with the e shift the bridge seal can cause the issue with it not wanting to come out of park?

    Got 2004 bmw it says transmission I bring it to bmw to put computer to it saying it is a switch where knob is do u have link to by one

    Hi Gary..I have just done a fluid and pan change on my zf6hp19 bmw e90..I also replaced the bridge seal
    Mechatronic sleeve
    And the 4 sleeves ..
    My question is.. should I reset transmission adaptations? I see the procedure is quite involved for the learn process.. or is there a less complicated re learn procedure?

    If the lead frame is bad wouldn’t it do the same thing.

      Possible, I tested the solenoid, when hot it actually came down to 10 ohms, i'm thinking thats why i was able to get it out of park. So far i only issue i ever had with the tcm is a bad range switch which gives code 5088

    I have bmw 2006 525xi with code 4e87 shift lock 4.not much info available about this code. Car is in limp mode do not shift gears. it runs and drive but in limp mode.also i could shift into gears without pressing the brake Any suggestions or info how to diagnose it?

      May have a shorted EDS solenoid on the valvebody, have you tried clearing the code?

    I changed my valve body 2007 bmw 525 and got a valve body from a 2004 525. It fixed my other problem but now it’s stuck in park never had a problem with it. I’m think I should change the shift solenoid just like I did here. Thanks. Maybe I’ll put my old shift solenoid into my new valve body?

      I use mineral spirits, you could also use brake kleen too.

    Informative as always sir , I'm having gear stuck at 3rd on a Mercedes 2000 clk only when it's cold once it gets warmed up after driving a while everything falls back to normal , I'm a DIY kinda guy and suspecting the problem is due to bad conductor plate so I will change it , I'll appreciate if you hint me to look for something else while I'm at it , thank you for your videos

      Yes sir no codes on scanner and the oil level is accurate as well

      @@mmradian5233 Could be conductor plate, what you may want to do is swap around the shift solenoids(they are the same)also see if anything changes when back together. So in the morning it does not shift? how is reverse?

      Great I'll try swapping them around and note any changes yes just like the park problem when cold in video but without codes , the reverse also kicks at cold state then smooth out when warmed

    Hello, I have a question about a transmission fault but I don’t really know where or how to contact you so I will just drop the problem in the comments. my 2008 BMW 335i e90 transmission has recently gone bad on me, or so I think.
    The car turns on perfectly as it usually would, but once I put the car on D or R it will not move as if it was still in park . I scanned it for codes and what I got was codes : 4F81,4F91, 5088.
    Which are ration monitoring clutch A , Clutch A-D and gearbox selector switch sensor.
    I have no idea what to do and I am hoping for some assistance or maybe even guidance on what actions. Thank you.

      I do not believe these can be reprogrammed, they would have to wiped clean and then programmed, not sure of anyone who can do this

      @@GaryFerraro nothing wrong with this TCM but what I'm trying to do if someone change the transmission these kind of TCM you won't be able to Drive the car until you reprogram it and I do have a class in California part of security

    @Gary Ferraro I have a 2006 BMW 325i and i purchased the car in limp mode and the transmission wont let you go into any of the gears unless you use the emergency release tab otherwise its stuck in park, Im located in North Carolina any recommendations other than replacing the valve body seals mechatronics seals and solenoids? vehicle has 212,000 miles, also notice that it was leaking oil from the mechatronics sleeve seal

      Have it scanned for codes, record the codes and clear them, see what comes back

    Hi Gary! Great video first off!
    I have a slight problem with my BMW 325D ZF6HP19..
    The car drove fine up until a few days ago when I couldn't select P, the gear lever would just not budge, could still select D,N,R but not Park not even after rocking the car.
    Had a look underneath the car at the linkage and can select the linkage by releasing the locking mechanism with a screwdriver, but it seems to easily slip out of Park when I re-attach the gear linkage.
    Car has no fault codes.. just cannot select Park?
    Any ideas.

      ok, you have the regular shifter correct, park is not a button

      @@GaryFerraro yeah disconnected the cable, I can select each mode when I use a screwdriver to press against the spring plate and move the lever on the gear box, park engages, but when I re-attach the valve body and cable it continues to slip out of park but stays in d,n,r just fine.

      @@andrewprime6498 What if you just reattach the valvebody and no cable? still comes out. Something is keeping it from moving all the way into park
