There are also ways of mixing a few watered down colors with acrylic. I've been looking for more videos about it online. But it looks similar to your style. Start off with the base and then use the colors to build off of each other to form a more realistic image. It would have more depth as well because it is thicker than the stain. Learned this working for theme parks as a theme painter. I need to try it at home and put a video out if anything.

Maybe not "watered down", but more like the idea of thinning out the acrylic. He says it isn't possible, I am not so sure.
Your method is similar. Use colors like brown, red, yellow, black and white to blend out. Star at the bottom and build up as it were.
