You didn't mention the X Cup. The juicy X cup. Randomly generated levels. Never gets old. Also it's alot better on original hardware as the n64 controller uses an analogue joystick which makes you skid alot less on expert mode and higher.
Actually, from what I've played (via emulation), Climax differentiates itself way more than GP Legend than you said. The music uses the same soundfont (I think), but the race themes are actually remixes, and not just the GP Legend music. Spin Attacks are now also possible by pressing L and R at the same time, and Boost Spin Attacks are also possible by doing a Spin Attack followed by a Boost. Rather than getting boosts every lap, you now get boost fires. You do this by pressing boost twice in quick succession. You can also do Boost Fire Spin Attacks by doing a Spin Attack followed by a Boost Fire. Rather than retiring from a race after exploding off course, instead you get brought back to the course just like Lakitu from Mario Kart, although you will probably lose a few places. The graphics also do seem to be more smoother than GP Legend, and the game looks more colorful as well. It's a shame the game was never released outside Japan, since it does do a lot of things differently from GP Legend.
As someone who's beaten GX's story on Very Hard and X's GP on Master, I actually respect the fact that you admitted you weren't very good at the game but still had fun with it. I also respect your honesty about cheating to show off the unlockables. The series really doesn't have a bad game, the GBA games just kind of underwhelm when they're compared to X and GX. I think what lead to the end of the series was the reboot attempt with the anime and the last 2 games. In the anime itself, Captain Falcon isn't the main character. He's still important, but there's 10 episode stretches between times he does something that matters. It still highlights a lot of other characters in cool ways, and even has the best version of Samurai Goroh. Cool for the hardcore F-Zero fan, kinda weird for everyone else. Had Captain Falcon been the main character, it probably would have found an audience easier. Climax was also a pretty good game, but I think they should have delayed it and made it a launch title for the DS. Nintendo also doesn't try very hard to promote the series. When you look at Smash, Captain Falcon has been the only F-Zero character in the series for 20 years, and the only series from the original 12 to never receive a second character (assuming you count Yoshi as a Mario character). All in all, very cool retrospective. Love the line on your shirt by the way. Sounds like something Captain Falcon would say.

I think the GP anime is slept on, it’s super enjoyable and has an amazing cast of characters. I didn’t expect it to be as good as it was. Black shadow was a generic villain but it’s a good generic. His VA is a personal favorite of mine, he’s actually so much more intimidating than in GX. There are some fillers episodes that either suck or just give good insight. For what it was I’d say it’s a solid 8/10
An aspect I appreciate from it is how it handles or interprets the game series and its characters. The show's big episode count is do to the fact it dedicates a lot of them to specific characters. The obvious route to take with the anime would've been to make a show about Captain Falcon and his escapades, but instead it decided to make it about a new character getting introduced to the world and racers in the series. While Captain Falcon is an important part of F-zero, the series is more then just him, so I'm glad they went in that direction with it. A few of my favorite episodes from it were the self contained stories dedicated to some racers, or the ones where it's just the main cast hanging out.
I was really surprised when I came across this video after looking up "F-ZERO". Didn't think you would ever make an F-ZERO video. But in this starving climate of a lack of games, I do appreciate the dedicated video to F-ZERO every once in awhile. It was probably one of their worst dubs after OP. But if there is one thing i can say, It's that Nintendo gave the game such a huge lack of marketing. I don't even think i knew the game existed until i saw it on the internet. Nobody seems to know GP legend, and why most people assume that GX was the last game. Climax did even worse, given that it was released a month after the anime ended. (The anime did okay in japan from what i heard, which is why GP Legend did decently in japan, unlike america). NoA sucks sometimes. But so does NCL. But at the end of the day, I'm just glad someone is giving the series more positive exposure. So I thank you for making this video! (Also yes. F-Zero is one of my favorite gaming series. And in my own opinion, I think it is the best Racing Series because of how different it is, And that it makes you feel like you're going fast. As far as getting a new game I honestly think F-Zero will never get a new game. And even if they did make a new game, I think it won't be as good as F-Zero GX was. If anything, I would only like to see a Remastered Version of the game (GX), Even add DLC Characters like Samus in her Metroid Ship. I think that would satisfy us F-Zero Fans.
And Sega made it. It may seem weird, but what about Sonic in the game as well? And a proper Fox Mcloud, instead of his ''dad'' xD They even can do alternate costume ideas, like smash bros.
If you have a good gaming pc, dolphin emulator with a controller and F-Zero GX should work. I’d recommend it, because it’s pricy as hell to get F-Zero GX in physical form, lol. I’m lucky that I have the game in physical form though, even if it’s physically damaged (can’t complete mission 4 of the story mode without it crashing, but the Grand Prix is fair game).
Big thanks for making this video! Bought F-zero GX a while back, but I only knew the captain from Smash Bros. Needless to say, I fell in love. I have been on a gaming hiatus for a while, but started this week playing again and omg it is so great. Currently I am at chapter 9 of the story and the second cup in expert mode, while almost every character is unlocked. Really interesting to see the older games and I have played the SNES title in the SNES Mini, but it did not compare to GX. I was tempted to buy X, but after seeing gameplay here, I think I don't tbh. That arcade steering wheel seems waaay cooler ^^' Bit of advice, if you don't mention that you do stuff on novice, most people won't notice, and then you should not feel the need to also defend that fact. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it might take off a minutes of an already long video and everyone plays on their own way, gotta respect those things. "F-Zero doesn't really have a plot. You're just racing." Looks like _somebody_ forgot to look at the manual... Not that I really blame you; that's not the go-to thing for gamers to do nowadays. But for real, the F-Zero manual is freakin' great and, ironically, is loaded with way more plot and lore than you would expect, beyond just the sick Story of Captain Falcon comic. It's worth a look.
You need new ideas for a new F-Zero, Nintendo? How about a Career mode with customizable machines that can be upgraded with prize money? How about a mode with items like in Mario Kart but with an F-Zero styled twist to them? How about a Battle Royale mode with deadly items to destroy your opponents with, and the last-place racer is eliminated each lap? Need I go on?
I know this sounds late, but I'm sure you've heard of the fully-translated/patched version of F-Zero Climax for a free downloadable rom. So, maybe you can review that in the future?
Hey man! To play F-zero series in the historical order was my original plan. For now i've ended SNES verson, X, Maximum Velocity. And each of these gave me a hell lot of fun! If MV is the worst of them all - I'm really curious how would would be GX feels like! It's already my favorite racing games series!
Unfortunately, the closest we can get to an F-Zero game would be a hacked version of Mario Kart DS known as F-Zero DSX; there's even a whole channel about this. Never played it, but the courses were very nice! Other than Fast R MAX, I think it's the closest we can get. Not to mention Miyamoto's like the Japanese George Lucas nowadays... I lost interest in games, so I'm like a traditionalist. But even to this day, I'll always hope for a new F-Zero game! Long live this phenomenal franchise! I also made some fanfics if you're interested, but they're pretty much GX and GP Legend-based...
F-Zero on the SNES didn't include a multiplayer because it was technologically impossible for the developers to get it working, due to the high speed of the game. Fun fact, Mario Kart on the SNES was actually created BECAUSE Nintendo wanted a ''2 player F-Zero'', and with Mario Kart being a much more slower racing game, it allowed them to include 2 player function.
Don’t be ashamed of “only doing beginner.” F-Zero X made me pretty fricking mad at times, I don’t know how I ever beat all those cups on the difficulty settings I chose. Similarly, I don’t remember how I beat F-Zero GX’s ruby cup on master. I may have used some vehicle besides Blue Falcon, but I Stan Blue Falcon out of principle (it’s my favorite car, lol).
I'm not a fan of the N64 controller but it's still miles better than the Wii classic controller you showed, imo. That thing is far too small and cramped with the left stick in the same position as on Sonys controllers which I can't stand. Dualshocks are uncomfortable enough and cause hand cramps easily without shrinking them down and exacerbating their problems. Nintendo should have based the classic controller on the Gamecube controller instead of the Playstation one. The Gamecube controller was excellent, Playstation not so much (with the exception of the original, digital PSX controller, that one was pretty good).

Captain falcon was NOT running away from black shadow in the end of chapter 3, the complete opposite actually. He was rushing to the lightning area to confront him but had to save Jody on the way.
For your complaint about the original F zero and not knowing about pulling back on the D pad to jump farther. Back in the day games came with these things called instruction manuals that told you the details of the game.
"F-Zero X Races are much shorter" "I love that they are 3 laps" X Races aren't shorter because of the faster pace, tracks are longer to compensate for the faster speed, races are shorter because there's only 3 laps
No I recommend Fzero GX the controls are more polish and smooth compared to the first 2 games I easily won a race more times on Fzero GX than on Fzero and Fzero X so Fzero GX I recommend more the only true challenge is the story mode is really hard even on easy
Took me about 14 years to get it, but once I get GX i just felt in love with it. Years watching videos wasn´t near my true experience. From low poly, pre-rendered graphics and drawn png, to fully modeled machines and pilots, studio quality sound, much higher speeds, damn, that thing is one of the biggest generation leaps I ever seen. I knew what I was heading into, a hard shit and even though I play and loose in expert mode, not even master, can't even win novice in diamond cup I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! gameplay is my must in videogames. I remember playing chapter 2 about 30 times in a row (and took me around 50 tryes), I wasn't frustrated, i did enjoy it! because it actually took so little time after each try and it felt like i was learning a little bit more and that kept me on the road. I'm no longer buying new videogames, nor i'm a collector buying over priced shit every month, that's why I choose GX, just like old days, one game stands so much time before complete it, not needing the 100 tracks of Mario Kart 8 to keep it alive.
Batman, I don't know. Link would be Nintendo's batman by their status, attitude and abilities. Both are emblems of courage and walking arsenals. Also Batman hates guns, and Captin Falcon owns one. If I were to compare CF to a super hero from DC it would be Booster Gold. Both are futuristic heroes and have a similar fashion style, with big egos.
You missed the challenges mode in GP Legend, which was **a lot** of fun. It's a big reason why GPL is actually my favorite in the series. Tons of tracks, unlockable racers, mode-7 style graphics, great music..
I was never a hardcore fan or anything, but I remembered playing one of the F-Zero games and I've always liked how the tracks were set up. I have listened to Captian Falcon's theme from GX after this review and found it enjoyable.
I don't think it's unfair of a complaint about not being able to look behind in F-Zero since you could in Super Mario Kart, but at the same time, that game utilized the split screen to let the players look behind them. At this point, I and certainly many others would take a remaster of F-Zero GX. The frame rate and speed make this a fluid experience and I enjoy the challenge this game provides with its difficulty.

one interesting thing about the SNES game and Maximum Velocity is that if you know what the safe count is for each lap, you easily know what lap you're on

Although it would have been nice to talk about the Mario Kart franchise a bit more since, if Mach Rider can be seen as the precursor of F-Zero, F-Zero can also be seen as the precursor of Super Mario Kart since, at first, they wanted to do a similar game but with multiplayer in mind this time! (Since the technology couldn't allow it, which is a shame tbh) And it sadly explains the lack of games if you see it this way since F-Zero's popularity is nowhere as Mario Kart's! @Coop Great Video Dude :D One thing you forgot about F-Zero X is the X Cup. All the tracks are random generated and sometime you get tracks which the cpu cant handle xD. One time I was the only racer on the track, but sadly nothing special happen. You just finish the race and thats it. Funny enough the last racer that died is still in the hud in second place even he is dead. Btw they is a awesome rom hack named F-Zero X Climax for the N64. Its completely ok if your not the best, as long you have fun thats the only thing that matters :D
The Gamecube memory card I have with all of the AX characters unlocked is basically my life's work when I was a teenager. That story mode on the highest difficulty was a tough challenge for sure.

Lol, first of all, being a retired F-Zero veteran myself, I cant blame you for playing the games on easier difficulties, It can become frustrating after a while trying to beat the games beyond standard difficulty, even if I eventually finished all of the games (minus FZX EK and Climax) on master, doesnt mean I enjoyed doing all of it, I especially can recall spending a whole day trying to beat chapter 5 of GX story mode on very hard just to unlock the Cosmic Dolphin, with futile results, even if I eventually cleared it, nothing can repay me that whole day XD,. Nowadays, whenever I dust off the gamecube or the wii and play GX for some reason, I play on standard at most and only the cups with the least CRAZY designs, so I can definitely relate. I dont really have a least favorite F-Zero Game, since all of them gave me some kind of worth, the first one gave a good first impression, X had rocking ost and fun multiplayer, GX had the best content, MV was a familiar experience with new environment (tracks and vehicles), and GP Legend was like combining the first 3 into a compact experience. I actually watched the anime (it was long by the way, 51 episodes) Ive seen better series, but wasn't that bad all things considered, (it has one of the best mute city remixes), It was clearly made for a younger audience and to boost sales of the game and some merchandise in japan, Im glad that I saw it, but I dont think I would watch it again anytime soon. All in all, it was a good retrospective, and made me remember how much I like the series. Kinda strange you didnt mentioned the FAST series, which many of us consider it to be F-Zero Spiritual Successor, and has some references to the series, like the Fulcon Capital machine, and how in FAST RMX it has the same paint job as the Blue Falcon.
@@doctortoast4361 the only difference is that Wipeout appeared in the same generation as F-Zero X (PS/N64) while FAST was post Climax. you can say FZX and WipeOut to be both genre contemporaries.

I admire your ways of cheating. Although the only cheat I use is using different machines in story mode, and unlocking AX exclusive parts.
F-Zero and Burnout are my favorite arcade racing franchises. Both are dead, and I REALLY want them back with new entries.

Bought F-zero GX a while back, but I only knew the captain from Smash Bros.
Needless to say, I fell in love.
I have been on a gaming hiatus for a while, but started this week playing again and omg it is so great.
Currently I am at chapter 9 of the story and the second cup in expert mode, while almost every character is unlocked.
Really interesting to see the older games and I have played the SNES title in the SNES Mini, but it did not compare to GX.
I was tempted to buy X, but after seeing gameplay here, I think I don't tbh. That arcade steering wheel seems waaay cooler ^^'
Bit of advice, if you don't mention that you do stuff on novice, most people won't notice, and then you should not feel the need to also defend that fact. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it might take off a minutes of an already long video and everyone plays on their own way, gotta respect those things.
That all said, awesome video, I will check out the music, probably still watch the anime and finish GX.

This is a fantastic retrospective. You went above and beyond this one. I freakin LOVE F-Zero
Have you heard of FAST RMX? It's the closest thing to F-ZERO on switch. It's very simple, but I'd say it's around the same level as GX.
"F-Zero doesn't really have a plot. You're just racing." Looks like _somebody_ forgot to look at the manual... Not that I really blame you; that's not the go-to thing for gamers to do nowadays. But for real, the F-Zero manual is freakin' great and, ironically, is loaded with way more plot and lore than you would expect, beyond just the sick Story of Captain Falcon comic. It's worth a look.
You need new ideas for a new F-Zero, Nintendo? How about a Career mode with customizable machines that can be upgraded with prize money? How about a mode with items like in Mario Kart but with an F-Zero styled twist to them? How about a Battle Royale mode with deadly items to destroy your opponents with, and the last-place racer is eliminated each lap? Need I go on?
I know this sounds late, but I'm sure you've heard of the fully-translated/patched version of F-Zero Climax for a free downloadable rom. So, maybe you can review that in the future?
Hey man! To play F-zero series in the historical order was my original plan. For now i've ended SNES verson, X, Maximum Velocity. And each of these gave me a hell lot of fun! If MV is the worst of them all - I'm really curious how would would be GX feels like! It's already my favorite racing games series!
Unfortunately, the closest we can get to an F-Zero game would be a hacked version of Mario Kart DS known as F-Zero DSX; there's even a whole channel about this. Never played it, but the courses were very nice! Other than Fast R MAX, I think it's the closest we can get. Not to mention Miyamoto's like the Japanese George Lucas nowadays... I lost interest in games, so I'm like a traditionalist. But even to this day, I'll always hope for a new F-Zero game! Long live this phenomenal franchise!

F-Zero on the SNES didn't include a multiplayer because it was technologically impossible for the developers to get it working, due to the high speed of the game. Fun fact, Mario Kart on the SNES was actually created BECAUSE Nintendo wanted a ''2 player F-Zero'', and with Mario Kart being a much more slower racing game, it allowed them to include 2 player function.

F-Zero X made me pretty fricking mad at times, I don’t know how I ever beat all those cups on the difficulty settings I chose.
Similarly, I don’t remember how I beat F-Zero GX’s ruby cup on master. I may have used some vehicle besides Blue Falcon, but I Stan Blue Falcon out of principle (it’s my favorite car, lol).
I'm not a fan of the N64 controller but it's still miles better than the Wii classic controller you showed, imo. That thing is far too small and cramped with the left stick in the same position as on Sonys controllers which I can't stand. Dualshocks are uncomfortable enough and cause hand cramps easily without shrinking them down and exacerbating their problems. Nintendo should have based the classic controller on the Gamecube controller instead of the Playstation one. The Gamecube controller was excellent, Playstation not so much (with the exception of the original, digital PSX controller, that one was pretty good).

Captain falcon was NOT running away from black shadow in the end of chapter 3, the complete opposite actually. He was rushing to the lightning area to confront him but had to save Jody on the way.
For your complaint about the original F zero and not knowing about pulling back on the D pad to jump farther. Back in the day games came with these things called instruction manuals that told you the details of the game.
After seeing the anime falcon punch i had to rewind a couple times because i couldnt even focus after that. That punch was just so incredible.

X Races aren't shorter because of the faster pace, tracks are longer to compensate for the faster speed, races are shorter because there's only 3 laps
I'm scared though I realized if we get a new Fzero game it'll have less content than Fzero GX and have the finish it later free update approach.
This is why I find it hard that F-Zero doesn't deserve a new game!
(That and F-Zero X was my first one)
No I recommend Fzero GX the controls are more polish and smooth compared to the first 2 games I easily won a race more times on Fzero GX than on Fzero and Fzero X so Fzero GX I recommend more the only true challenge is the story mode is really hard even on easy
Took me about 14 years to get it, but once I get GX i just felt in love with it. Years watching videos wasn´t near my true experience. From low poly, pre-rendered graphics and drawn png, to fully modeled machines and pilots, studio quality sound, much higher speeds, damn, that thing is one of the biggest generation leaps I ever seen.
I knew what I was heading into, a hard shit and even though I play and loose in expert mode, not even master, can't even win novice in diamond cup I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! gameplay is my must in videogames.
I remember playing chapter 2 about 30 times in a row (and took me around 50 tryes), I wasn't frustrated, i did enjoy it! because it actually took so little time after each try and it felt like i was learning a little bit more and that kept me on the road.
I'm no longer buying new videogames, nor i'm a collector buying over priced shit every month, that's why I choose GX, just like old days, one game stands so much time before complete it, not needing the 100 tracks of Mario Kart 8 to keep it alive.

Batman, I don't know. Link would be Nintendo's batman by their status, attitude and abilities. Both are emblems of courage and walking arsenals. Also Batman hates guns, and Captin Falcon owns one. If I were to compare CF to a super hero from DC it would be Booster Gold. Both are futuristic heroes and have a similar fashion style, with big egos.

You missed the challenges mode in GP Legend, which was **a lot** of fun. It's a big reason why GPL is actually my favorite in the series. Tons of tracks, unlockable racers, mode-7 style graphics, great music..

I was never a hardcore fan or anything, but I remembered playing one of the F-Zero games and I've always liked how the tracks were set up.
I have listened to Captian Falcon's theme from GX after this review and found it enjoyable.
I don't think it's unfair of a complaint about not being able to look behind in F-Zero since you could in Super Mario Kart, but at the same time, that game utilized the split screen to let the players look behind them. At this point, I and certainly many others would take a remaster of F-Zero GX. The frame rate and speed make this a fluid experience and I enjoy the challenge this game provides with its difficulty.

one interesting thing about the SNES game and Maximum Velocity is that if you know what the safe count is for each lap, you easily know what lap you're on

Great video, I really enjoyed it! Although it would have been nice to talk about the Mario Kart franchise a bit more since, if Mach Rider can be seen as the precursor of F-Zero, F-Zero can also be seen as the precursor of Super Mario Kart since, at first, they wanted to do a similar game but with multiplayer in mind this time! (Since the technology couldn't allow it, which is a shame tbh) And it sadly explains the lack of games if you see it this way since F-Zero's popularity is nowhere as Mario Kart's!

@Coop Great Video Dude :D One thing you forgot about F-Zero X is the X Cup. All the tracks are random generated and sometime you get tracks which the cpu cant handle xD. One time I was the only racer on the track, but sadly nothing special happen. You just finish the race and thats it. Funny enough the last racer that died is still in the hud in second place even he is dead. Btw they is a awesome rom hack named F-Zero X Climax for the N64. Its completely ok if your not the best, as long you have fun thats the only thing that matters :D

Whenever someone tells me that Diddy Kong Racing is the best racing game ever made, I point them to F-Zero GX.
The Gamecube memory card I have with all of the AX characters unlocked is basically my life's work when I was a teenager. That story mode on the highest difficulty was a tough challenge for sure.

Lol, first of all, being a retired F-Zero veteran myself, I cant blame you for playing the games on easier difficulties, It can become frustrating after a while trying to beat the games beyond standard difficulty, even if I eventually finished all of the games (minus FZX EK and Climax) on master, doesnt mean I enjoyed doing all of it, I especially can recall spending a whole day trying to beat chapter 5 of GX story mode on very hard just to unlock the Cosmic Dolphin, with futile results, even if I eventually cleared it, nothing can repay me that whole day XD,. Nowadays, whenever I dust off the gamecube or the wii and play GX for some reason, I play on standard at most and only the cups with the least CRAZY designs, so I can definitely relate.
I dont really have a least favorite F-Zero Game, since all of them gave me some kind of worth, the first one gave a good first impression, X had rocking ost and fun multiplayer, GX had the best content, MV was a familiar experience with new environment (tracks and vehicles), and GP Legend was like combining the first 3 into a compact experience.
I actually watched the anime (it was long by the way, 51 episodes) Ive seen better series, but wasn't that bad all things considered, (it has one of the best mute city remixes), It was clearly made for a younger audience and to boost sales of the game and some merchandise in japan, Im glad that I saw it, but I dont think I would watch it again anytime soon.
All in all, it was a good retrospective, and made me remember how much I like the series.
Kinda strange you didnt mentioned the FAST series, which many of us consider it to be F-Zero Spiritual Successor, and has some references to the series, like the Fulcon Capital machine, and how in FAST RMX it has the same paint job as the Blue Falcon.
GIPSY Because RMX is about as much a spiritual successor as Wipeout.
@@doctortoast4361 the only difference is that Wipeout appeared in the same generation as F-Zero X (PS/N64) while FAST was post Climax. you can say FZX and WipeOut to be both genre contemporaries.
