    I think the 4K display is not meant to be for game playing, it scales perfectly to 1080p, 4pixels for 1 pixel at 1080p, which on a 17" screen will be hard to notice. 4K for productivity and video playback maybe. This is better than having a 1440p display in my opinion.

      +HELLienadO This is what I was thinking, not sure where the mentality comes from that a high res screen is a waste of time if you can't run games at that res. My 780 is far from running AAA games at 4K res, but I still bought a 4K display for video playback, and because high PPI displays are awesome.

    • @HELLienadO
      @HELLienadO 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Olly Pellatt yep, while a 1440p display is fine, as games get more demanding, laptops start struggling to play at that res. Scaling down a 1440p display to 1080p will never look as good as scaling down a 4k display to 1080p, 1440p only scales down perfectly to 720p, which won't look good. You can play very well at 1080p on a 4k display that size, for a few years to come, and enjoy the 4k for everything else. 4k gaming only on very powerful, non affordable by most, desktop computers, right now. Of course, that will change as things evolve, 8k will be the next increment.

    • @JudgeZetsumei
      @JudgeZetsumei 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +HELLienadO Have you ever used a 4k display? I have a 32" BenQ UHD monitor and a Dell Inspiron 15 7559 with a UHD panel and like you I had the same assumption that 1080p will scale perfectly but unfortunately it does not. The same up scaling algorithms are applied to 1080p as it is with any other odd resolution. On my laptop this isn't really an issue at all because the screen is too small and the pixel density is too high to notice without planting your face to the screen. But it is very very noticeable on a larger display. This laptop being 17" may just get away with it as relatively speaking although it's a large laptop it's still a pretty small display.

    • @HELLienadO
      @HELLienadO 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Judge Zetsumei I have not, but I remember Logan from tek syndicate talking about exactly that, from his experience, and it made sense.
      A a 32" screen is probably too big for that downscale, but on a 17" laptop screen, which is what is being presented here, as you said, it may get away with it pretty well. I think they should've included that in the review.

    You can choose to only render 1080p
    Since 1080p on 4k means pretty much 1 rendered pixel uses 4 pixels on the screen, which wont result in a blurry image.
    So you can easily save battery power there.

      The point is that it was a waste of budget to put a 4k screen on it. Laptop would probably be 100 or 200 dollars cheaper without it.

      +Honorien it doesn't change the increased power consumption through the more power hungry panel either, you still have to draw all 4 pixels instead of one. It does however reduce power consumption cause the gpu needs to do less

  • @demogis

    I bought the SC1070 based on what I read about it; there's better written reviews out there than video. This LTT review of the 980m version really helped convince me to go ahead with the purchase. Recently, the price has come down a lot. It's solid and weighty. The keyboard is weird. The touch pad left and right clicks suck. I game a little on it. You can push ROTTR at full hd, but it gets hot. The 4K screen is beautiful. Scaling is handled well. I use it professionally, so the screen real estate is important. I do stats work and GIS, so needed some growl under the hood without it looking like a toy. Port placement is crowded on the right side. I wish it had another slot for nvme drive for RAID config. Wi-fi is a little weak. A real upside for me is the down clocking feature (nobody talks about this). You can really extend battery life to over 4 hours. That's really useful for regular productivity tasks. There's a g-sync version now and a 15" is on the way. Hope that helps any window shoppers out there.
    Easy

    • @totinospizzarolls4737
      @totinospizzarolls4737 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      A 1080p screen would've made this laptop very impressive, as it would be a lot less expensive (maybe $2400?)

    • @mattafaak
      @mattafaak 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Fredrik Carlén the problem is, running at non-native panel resolution (in other words, scaling) isn't always pretty as it would be on a native 1080p panel. Which is an important balance to strike on a machine of this particular pedigree.

    • @weewoo7802
      @weewoo7802 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +J.D. Whited He's saying that companies should just use a 1080 panel as the hardware isn't there yet especially for laptops. 1080P makes the laptop more impressive as it will perform better at 1080P, look better and be less expensive.

    • @dillonjohnlane
      @dillonjohnlane 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Fredrik Carlén You're entirely missing the point. At that point you're going to be paying lots of extra money just to have it look worse than it would have running on a native 1080p monitor because of scaling interpolation.

    • @fredrikcarlen3212
      @fredrikcarlen3212 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      J.D. Whited That would be true in most cases, however a 4k panel can scale to 1080p perfectly because each "1080 pixel" forms a 2x2 "4k pixel" grid, meaning that each pixel is equally sized when scaled. Removing the blurry effect that normally occurs when scaling.

    I bought a brand new Alienware 17 R3 and had to spend 4 hours fixing all the bugs before getting any gaming going on. I really wanted to wait for EVGA so release the SC17 but got impatient. Maybe next year.
    And I agree that 4k displays on gaming laptops is kind of a drag at this point. They are doing it just because their competitors do it. It won't matter for MOBAs and such, but for AAA titles with piss poor optimization like we have today that's definitely a drawback rather than a strength.

      Seriously, what could I have bought to not be a sheep? And what exactly is wrong with Alienware? LOL why are they so hated. They're not any more expensive than their competitors. The 2015 models onward actually have rather toned down design that won't make you look like a clown in public.

      +Linh Nguyen (KaWylde Guitarist) You might want to be aware that your laptop, just like its predecessors for numerous years, is a re-shell of Clevo innards. So you can get basically the same thing under numerous brands, and smaller boutiques can usually provide better service (including mid-life GPU upgrades) and better price.

      Dn Fx of course 4k in a 28" screen with a desktop in its back 4K is glorious, but, at least for me, it does not make any sense on a laptop, especially that 17" screen is still not big enough for 4K :\

      +iBoolGuy Aside from power consumption I see no downside on having 4K compared to 1080p, you can still play at 1080p and it will supposedly scale well because it can just double the pixels in both directions (1080p * 4 = 4K)

    • @Fox420
      @Fox420 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcel Burkhard im not sure if other monitors handle scaling better, but on my asus, youtube 1080p video looks pretty poo, blu-ray's look pretty good, and games look perfect because they render on the fly. Literally it's only worth having a 4k panel if it's in a monitor attached to a beefy PC, (......or mac #shudder#) not in a little laptop screen. It's approaching an apple-like level of pointlessly high DPI

    Full featured bios would be really welcomed to high end laptop enthusiasts. Hopefully EVGA would follow more on MSI and Clevo with high performance and configurable DTRs instead of the generic direction of putting everything in a small chassis that just hinders the performance to the point of that you just paid full price to use the components at well below %100 of their capability.

    It gives you great font rendering for web browsing and everyday work,
    and while gaming you can render in 1080p no problems, since UHD is a multiple of 1080p. Yes, the battery consumption is higher, but as you said yourself you are not going to carry this laptop to class every day! 4k is great and it's here to stay, get used to it! (yes 120Hz support on 4k and gsync is what I am looking for from the new DP 1.3 and new 2016 GPUs)

    My EVGA video card died, and the RMA process was not very convenient, and they did not provide a free shipping label, so it cost me $10 to send it in. They made me sign up, register, send my serial number through e-mail, use their RMA form after all the e-mails, and more. I just wanted to share that because it just happened to me.
    Other companies like Logitech, Corsair (even though Corsair makes some pretty unreliable components), and many others have much more streamlined service and will often pay for the shipping label.

      +homeycdawg having to sell this stuff to customers they wont get that most of the time. Laptops aim towards a PC gamer yes but they, for the most part, wont go as much into detail as say a desktop user will. When you sell a person a laptop with a 4K monitor thats labeled as a "gaming" laptop their going to have the expectation that the unit will be able to game at it with no issues.
      Alot of laptop manufactures do this and its rather stupid. You can say that its for one thing but in the end its a multi-purpose and if it lacks in one area its going to be a negative experience overall for most people. EVGA would have been better off putting a 1080P g-sync high refresh rate monitor that still looks as good at that size then opting for a pointless benefit for a laptop like 4K.

    Comeon laptop manufactures, please stop with the 4K is useful in a 17 inch display thing.
    However, thinking about the scaling with a typical 1080p video is probably better with a 4k than 1440p display as many people say, but its so hard to choose.
    1080p 144Hz G Sync would be great for general and FPS gaming, probably be the way to go for me. (plus better battery life but meh)
    1440p 75hz for general gaming.
    4K for video and image editing. Scaled down to 1080 for gaming.
    Or I will just get a desktop and a ultrabook.

  • @TheMrMKultra
    @TheMrMKultra 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well Laptops are far from ready for 4K gaming so with the 4K display I guess it's great for 4K youtube videos or so. An downscaling the resolution from 2160p to 1080p is much easier and sharper to the eye than from 1440p to 1080p. But yeah for the price I could easily go with a macbook pro 15" and not game on it.

    Hey Brandon and/or Edzel.... You might wanna shoot at a higher frame rate, shoot slower, or tell the editor to not slow down the shot at 0:57 - 1:08 its at bit glitchy...

    ...use sweet fx and inject smaa or fxaa in place of msaa to regain some fps at 4k

    fps on the b-roll was distracting, other than that this video was immaculate

    I personall love laptops built like tanks means they are going to last. I have a Thinkpad T420 myself right now so a thicker bulkier laptop is perfectly fine for me to carry around.

      +Montisaquadeis And they're much better in disassembly and servicing too, unlike the fancy "slim"-styled ones.

      Red Plague agreed. Had to take my thinkpad apart and redo the thermal psate and add another stick of ram to it since chrome was cosntantly eating up 90% of the 4gb of ram that was in it. Thinkpad now has 8gb of ram and fresh thermal paste as well to bring the temps down a little on both the intel i5 2520m and the nivdia nvs 4200m. Thinking of replacing the system down the line with a i7 4720hq cpu and a 960m and 8gb of ram for less then $1k should be doable with laptops like this out there www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015QZVA6G the older haswell chips are better performing then the newer skylake chips are.

      What angers me the most is that modern laptops lack the lid over the fan, that was used for easy cleaning. And the whole bottom part is now way much harder to remove, especially when it has the monitor bolted to it.

    4k will be nice for older ish games like wow,d3,starcraft2, but yes kind of silly to not have option for desktop class gpu.

    That's a small laptop is what I thought when he mentioned bringing it to class every day. I have an 18 inches with 2 inches of depth

    All I saw when they removed the cover is
    >option not installed
    Why would they save costs on the 3 cents SSD connector and boss is beyond my understanding. If I pay nearly 3K for a laptop, the LAST thing I want to see in the motherboard is unpopulated solder pads with "optional" components. Either remove the solder points altogether or allow me to install the optional modules myself.

    Mythlogic dia laptops are better. get the same CPU with a 1060 (full desktop class) GPU for $1700 little bit thicker, 1.7 inches, but you get 4 ram slots, 2 m.2 slots, 2 standard laptop hard drive slots. plus G sync on their 1080p monitor. Also there is the option of going for the 1070 GPU. the 16 inch model has the option for 3840x2160 LCD with G-sync. same specs and options other than screen. Thickness of the 16 inch model is only 1 inch, 1.13 inches if you opt for the 1070.
