    • @steamsteam6607
      @steamsteam6607 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mohammed Hamza Funny but in truth this has a LOT of potential usage. It's very cool that they use their position to pioneer some things we obviously wouldn't have the gear or money to try out. If you wanted to make a gaming café, set up large gaming room in a ho(s)tel, any of the other imaginable options without having a seperate computer for each taking up space this video/series is extremely helpful and interesting. I hope they continue looking at this until they manage to create a setup realistic enough in usage, price that people could start using and building similar machines. I'm thinking the board, case manufacturers just need to make a dedicated solution. Maybe even if it is in a "produce on demand" form factor given the potentially limited market for these kinds of things. Sharknado on the other hand is a fluke in every way imaginable but perhaps as a bad joke or massively over budgetted, out of control lost bet.

He's also employing a lot of people and paying for other fees, such as gigabit internet, their insanely expensive server, etc. They may get a good amount of revenue from youtube, but that doesn't mean they're swimming in thousands of dollars worth of hardware constantly.

    • @FrEEZ1nG8P01nT
      @FrEEZ1nG8P01nT 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Augsburg Lp There is apparently more of us :D I wanted dual or quad G34 socket motherboard, as they are relatively cheap on ebay. Initially two AMD 16core opterons 62xx or 63xx, as they are like 50€ each. Some ram ofc, this will be probably the most expensive of the hardware :D. The gpus, well, any secondhand radeon could do, HD 5970s or so for now.. But with this, every VM can have just one gpu. You can not distribute the power dynamically. AMD released first hardware-based virtualization gpu - S7150x2 just this year, so we need to wait for that to come to consumers territory. Also nvidia GRID can be interesting too, but it is software-based mainly, but still very cool.

    • @FrEEZ1nG8P01nT
      @FrEEZ1nG8P01nT 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Suhkma Dheek
      yeah, that can be a bit of a problem. But TFLOPS and prices.. from what I found, older ATI cards had fewer problems with IOMMU than nvidia ones. And for r9 nanos, I think that was just temporarily problematic due to still new buggy drivers. We will see.. I would like to see current state of this, especially with KVM or even openstack :D That would be nice.

    This was very interesting. I like seeing the over the top builds, and I wish I had the resources to do this kind of thing myself!
    I wonder if you could deal with the card thermal issues by using PCIe breakout cables. I don't know how long you can get those before you start to lose performance. But If you can get a reasonable cable length then you could build a rack on top of the server, add more spacing between the cards and perhaps put some tower fans in the room to move air around better?
    I'm also interested in the thin client stuff. The zotac mini PC's look interesting. My main work server is at home, so I'm using a Lenovo Miix 300 (atom z3745f) with splashtop to remote access it. It works pretty well but I'd like a bigger screen and keyboard when doing that. For the moment I'll just buy one, hook up the tablet to micro HDMI, slap in a dongle and keyboard/ mouse combo and live with it. But I may update this to a permanent "at her place" zotac mini-pc solution instead.

    • @dcforemanuk

    • @evening_kovacs
      @evening_kovacs 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah isn't there a game service that's kinda like this where they house the actual hardware somewhere, receive input from you and stream the output of the game to you?

    • @cracklingice
      @cracklingice 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure over a not so great internet connection you'd be looking at 100ms, but what if the service was rolled out like some streaming services where there are a few hundred service hubs so there's almost always something nearby (and therefore around 20ms) and those service hubs communicated with each other for multiplayer gaming. While I still firmly believe having your own hardware would always be better for everything but your wallet, we're not all that far off from cloud gaming being a possibility.

    • @cracklingice
      @cracklingice 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plus, this was done over gigabit ethernet with likely a ten gigabit (potentially multiple) for the server. far far faster than most internet service.

    • @hellterminator
      @hellterminator 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It's not a transmitter, it's just a “fake screen” because Steam is retarded and can't run headless.

    • @cakebrin3r
      @cakebrin3r 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wat? its plugged into display port isnt it just a wireless display port connector?

    • @hellterminator
      @hellterminator 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      cakebrin3r No. Steam needs to think there's a screen connected in order for the streaming to work. This thing just takes in the video stream (and throws it away) and sends EDID saying it's a 4k 60Hz monitor. Its only purpose is to convince the graphics card that there's a screen connected (even though there isn't one).

    • @cakebrin3r

    • @hellterminator
      @hellterminator 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You don't. They don't exist. The required bandwidth would be too high. There are some wireless display bridges but they mostly suck (they use heavy video compression, so they're suitable for office work, but not much else).

      +LinusTechTips Although I guess using 4U blanks and mounting a rad would work as well. Or a cheap case and just destroy it to put rads everywhere since your cooling so many 980TIs. That would probably work out to be the best option. Shouldn't be too much custom work either since you would only be cutting holes for the rads, a pump, and a res, and mounting them. This could work...

      DO IT.
      Although the installation might be a night mare... try putting 10 GPUs into their respective PCI slots?
      What you should do is get the GTX 980 Hydro Copper edition, those blocks have upward facing ports.
      If you then attach quick disconnect fittings you'd be able to plug in the cards individually.
      You can then connect them through small quick disconnect bridges and have them in series.
      It's easier to remove a single card in case you need to, but would make the last card about 20-25 C warmer then the first since the water would rise about 2-3C per block.
      or use a long bridge with multiple T blocks and quick disconnects to have them run in parallel.though you'd need some beefy pumps to handle the loss in pressure from 10 blocks, but the cards would run at approximately the same temperature.
      Another option is do a hybrid parallel/Series, two lines coming in, and split them up to sets of GPUS (5x2, 2x5, 4(GTX980)x2+2(titans) and then combine the lines back up to the rads.
      It would be an insane water cooling project! with lots and lots of hours of fun aka crying silently in a corner because there's something wrong somewhere.

    So... Steam Streaming is the bottleneck there, right? I mean, I used it, it's pretty awesome, but even a gaming PC and a single thin client (in my case a Windows tablet on top of a docking station working as HTPC) all wired (Ethernet) will still have similar problems (latency, getting wonky at times, dropping resolution, etc).
    Theoretically, if you build this powerhouse and made wired connections everywhere to use it directly, I guess you could already make a lanhouse or an entire family setup like that.
    Of course, it'd still be kinda ridiculous the ammount of HDMI and USB cables going around (plus all the signal amplifiers/boosters), but it seems this monster could take it. :P
    Oh, in the end, I moved my office to the side of my living room and made it like this. Using a wireless keyboard, and a really long HDMI cable. The steam streaming experience wasn't bad... I was very surprised how well it worked, honestly. But man... nothing better than a direct connection. xD

Downside is needing to wire it and the cost, but that would solve the need to bother with HDMI/USB and boosters.

Put it all in one custom closet and you solve power with one high voltage terminal, noise isolated to a soundproof enclosure, and the cooling with an elegant design for the closet(vs having to vent out 10 different pcs around the house)

      Well linus when a bit overboard. Instead of having 10 GTX 980s you could used 10 GTX 1050TI's since in home streaming only support 1080P 60FPS anways and a 980 is overkill. Also you dont need as much ram as he used, 8GB of ram per user is fine for most gaming applications, also he used super overkill CPUS, each vm/player only really needs 4Cores, You dont need all that SSD storage because HDD's would be much cheaper and the only difference in performance between SSDs and HDDs in gaming is just loading times. Also you dont have to do it on such a big scale, you could used referbished server hardware (which is really cheap) and only have lets says 4 gamers 1 CPU since that is more realistic in a normal household. I myself am actually working on a similar project. I already have a server with 2x X5670's with 24GB of ram and I am going to make 3 gamers 1 cpu. I have 2 GTX 560ti's laying around and a HD 7770 which I am going to throw into my server, give each VM 6 threads and 8GB of ram each with 500GB of HDD space and I would be able to stream 720P 60FPS to my tvs and thinclients around my house. It is deffianlty not as impressive as what linus has done but I would argue that it is more practicle. Since the only time I would actually used all 3 vms at the same time is if my friends come over for a lanparty and all they have is a shitty laptop that doesn't game very well. I would be looking to upgrade the GPUS to 1050tis since they would be able to handle 1080P at 60fps alot better but its a start.

      Linus made a video on how to get review samples, and a major point was that you need to be able to get exposure for the product and your channel currently has only 35 subs and no content. Literally impossible. The fastest anything can go is the speed of light, and at the speed of light the time it would take to go from my house to tokyo is 36 milliseconds. Lower latency is definitely possible, but there's a hard limit as to how low it can go unless our current laws of physics are extremely wrong.
      edit: and that's the speed of light in a vacuum. The speed of light in an optical fiber is far slower, so the limit with current state-of-the-art materials is actually 54 ms.

    • @Canuck307
      @Canuck307 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Joshua Brown (ANONY_FOX) Actually Nvidea said they will only be supporting 2 way SLI. Which they have stated before, but are now pushing harder on the issue.
      3 and 4 way SLI will still be capable with the 10xx series cards.

    • @Canuck307
      @Canuck307 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua Brown Sorry, I saw you mention 2 way SLI support. Which has always been supported by NVidia.
      As for 3 and 4 way SLI support, which NVidia has never supported in full. Will now require a enthusiast mode in the BIOS to be written. No longer just plug and play.
      Which is why I elaborated on your comment "1080 series will only work in two way SLI". That is a false statement! In fact "10xx" series will work in 3 and 4 way SLI as well...

      Bitcoins have been ASIC accelerated for a while so it isn't worth it with cards. Some other cryptos are borderline worth it. Mining was always terrible for Nvidia cards (some key instructions missing, AMD was about 2x as fast). You could do protein folding though, but then it would be easier to just use a single OS with 8 cards.

    I've been waiting decades for us to actually get to a point where you can have one dedicated "box" where all your actual computing/gpu power is located, and just distribute the power dynamically as needed to whatever device you need to use on the fly, wireless, with no drawbacks. It seems like we're starting to approach this point finally. It's been around in basic forms for a long time, and the idea/concept has been around even longer, but there was always too many drawbacks or obstacles in the way to make it worth it realistically for me to even consider. Now we're getting closer to it actually being practical and feasible. My main concerns were the lag/drawbacks but it seems we're starting to get those down as well. We're not there fully yet obviously, but getting there clearly ;)

    I love the idea of the house of the future with a home server providing compute and other resources wherever needed. I would also love to see some sort of whole-house cooling. Every device, whether it's a computer or a surround sound receiver or TV or battery backup or wifi router or gaming console or whatever generates heat, and operates better with a longer lifespan if temperature can be controlled. A standard cooling solution that could be connected to easily and which could centralize heat management (dumping it outside in the summer, delivering it to rooms needing heat in the winter) would be amazing. Obviously we're a million miles from anything like that being remotely possible, but I can dream...

    Damn Linus, i can see the potential of your vision. A home based tower providing the pc utility on every screen of a home, or a gaming rig for a training esports team who wants to be mobile and efficient,even public pc accesses could utilize these. Too many possibilities. I can already see it happening

  • @MrHav1k
    @MrHav1k 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Things like this are cool, but the extra hardware and lag makes it more complex than having your own tower. It'll never take over until it becomes easier to do this than having a dedicated tower and maintaining that.

    • @DeathBringer769
      @DeathBringer769 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're starting to solve those drawbacks and practicality problems though. We're not there fully obviously, but we're getting closer. It's exciting. My main problems with it are exactly what you're saying, lag, extra hardware/trouble, etc. But if they perfect it to the point where you can have dedicated computing/gpu power in one place and just distribute it freely at will to whatever device you need, wirelessly, with no drawbacks... That's the future I'm excited for, and it's getting fairly close.

    I think it's a nice idea, a computer cluster for a multi-player gaming setup. Could it be a good business idea? Like to have potential for renting out one GPU at LAN parties and have the case out of the way to save room, or similarly in arcades you can add some PC games there.

  • @morzinbo

    The other video would make for a nice LAN party or internet cafe setup, but this one here is the dream. Won't be possible until someone figures out a way to stream video over the network without major latency issues.

    I dreamed about this when I started building my own pc. A central pc that would act as a heating unit for a room or even a small flat. All the unused processing power used to mine cryptocurrencies if heat is needed in winter while reducing dynamically the clock as needed for the summer. Integrating it into a 2-phase cooling system would be even more efficient. What amazed me is the streaming gadget, so everything can be wireless now.

    Did you have a single network cable going to the server or multiple? I would think if all of the network cables were hooked up and setup correctly through a good switch like a Ubiquiti, then the network lag would be negligible. If it's all through a single 1Gbps connection, then I'm surprised at the little lag noticed. Most of it looks like network lag to be honest. I don't think the server was even breaking a sweat.

    I think next time you could use the fact that you can have one computer in the closet for every device to better spread out the components, and have the closet itself be the cabinet of the machine, and implement some weird ultra-complex cooling solution that turns your closet into a freezer. That would help a lot with trottling
