What's it Like Starting a Farm in PUERTO RICO?

  • Today I visit Jimmy and Alia of JELA's Ark, a young family from Texas who moved to Puerto Rico to build their own off-grid homestead and organic farm.
They meet me in beautiful Guayama, guide me up the mountain to their stunning, ocean-view land, and give me a wonderful farm tour of their entire property.
We'll see their concrete home under construction, tour their container gardens, grow beds, orchards, and wild areas of the property. We'll learn what they're doing for water and hear about future plans to monetize via crop sales and eco-tourism.
This is a fabulous opportunity to see a tropical, Puerto Rico farm/off-grid homestead in the early stages of development and hear about some of the challenges they're facing as newbie farmers in the tropics.

I grew up poor in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and my life was simpler and better than the one I have forged here in NYC 🗽- I have fatigue living in NYC. I don’t like it. I love simplicity and family.

I wish more Puerto Rican from Puerto Rico brought more land to farm and live off the land. I know not everyone is as lucky to buy land from their hometown. I mean people who Grew Up in PR. Thank you for showing their video.

My cousin moved back to Puerto Rico after he retired. He lived in Chicago for many years. He started a farm in Jayuya PR. It’s beautiful. He grows coffee and other fruits. His coffee is grounded, packaged, and sold.

I have been watching your videos for the past week or so. This couple has a similar plan that I have. Wished I would of thought about it when my kids were young. You asked the question that I had about the iguanas. My family is from Cayey and my parents live there now. As I write this, I am planning a early retirement. Great collab. Thank you!

I am very happy for them ,following them since the first post .They are living my dream of going back to where i came from ,the country side with view to El Yunque. With their confidence they will achieve everything they want. Is kind of hard for me to go back to stay ,because my roots are already growing in New Jersey , but i enjoy what they are living.
    Dios les bendiga ,por siempre

I am becoming a fan of your videos. You are bringing me back 20 years ago when I used to live on that island. I am not knocking this couple but to be honest I had coworkers who did that same thing in the mountains of Ceiba a long time ago. It usually ends up with living this off grid life style for 4 to 5 years, then they miss living back on the mainland and end up selling the property. The views are amazing and I think this couple should prepare to Airbnb the home in the future.

At 5:18 in your video I think that gooseberry is called kettenberry or something like that. My mom has a bush on her land here in San Lorenzo And we make some really nice juice out of it in the blender mixed with a little water and sugar.

Approximately 2 minutes and 50 seconds into this video, you were showing where the house is being built right next to the country road. You have all that real state there and you’ve got to build the house right next to the Road. and then later on approximately 10 minutes and I don’t know how many seconds later you did mention that that was the road doesn’t make any sense to me, but that is a typical Puerto Rican thing, for I was born and raised on the island when we moved to the country, our house was not built next to the road
