    ‼️ PLEASE keep your betta in a 5-10 gallon tank! I previously stated 2 gallons is the absolute minimum, meaning nothing smaller than that, but after a year and a half, my opinion has changed to 3.5 gallons as the *absolute* minimum, even then, I’d recommend keeping it temporary until you are able to upgrade to a larger tank. Through personal experience with keeping bettas in 2 and 10 gallon tanks, I can confidently say, they LOVE the extra space and really use it to their advantage. Thank you for reading!

      So, I have a question. As of now, I’m planing on get a 0.75 gallon tank. So it’s not a full gallon. So many people have suggested that I get a bigger one, but I’m only getting one fish. Will my fish be thriving in my fish tank? Or is it to small?

    • @lishspetlife
      @lishspetlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi! I suggest getting something a little larger. I’d say the absolute minimum is 3 gallons even for one betta. I think 0.75 gallons is too small for a betta to be thriving. A 3-10 gallon is more ideal :) if you’re from Canada/America, Petsmart has a lot of tank kits which aren’t too expensive + they work great :) let me know if you have any more questions :)

      Hi! I would suggest running the filter for 2-4 weeks and adding fish food 3x a week into the tank (without fish) to build bacteria. You can test after the 2-4 weeks, hope this helps!

      I just recently purchased a betta fish and I am keeping it in a water bottle cap,
      Too small.or too big?

    I highly recommend adding one or two freshwater snails. They’ll keep the tank clean and their shells will protect them from the Bettas.

      @@lishspetlife have you done any videos about keeping freshwater snails with bettas ? i want to get some snails but i don’t want there to be too little algae for the snail or too much for the fish, you know ?

    • @lishspetlife
      @lishspetlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@veetoopretty hi! a good thing is that snails eat algae as well as left over fish pellets/flakes & you could also feed additional foods to them (vegetables). they tend to eat green algae and there’s actually no harm to bettas from it, so there shouldn’t be too much of a problem with having too much for the fish :) green algae grows from light. If you want more in the tank, keep the light on for longer periods of time & if you want less, keep it on for shorter. unfortunately, I haven’t made any videos on this yet & I won’t have one up for a couple of months :( there’s a lot of great sites + videos out there that I’m sure could help some more though!

    Love the video! I been fish keeping for...about 2 years?
    For anyone about to get a fish, keep in mind it's important to have the tank cycle. That means set up the tank a few weeks before you get your fish so beneficial bacteria can grow before hand.
    You can get some bacteria in some stores actually, just make sure it had time to build up in the tank.
    I Know the whole cycling of the tank sounds difficult, but it's actually easy one you get the hang of it!
    I hope everyone has a great time with thief fish!
    And if you fail once, don't let that get to you! Do more research and try again with more knowledge

      do you need to cycle thr tank every time you change water?

    • @lishspetlife
      @lishspetlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you don’t! when you change tank water, don’t change more than 50% :) the beneficial bacteria lives on surfaces of the tank, not in the water. as long as you don’t scrub down everything, you’re good!
      hope this helps :))

    Hey, I was wondering what I could use as a lid for my 5.5 gallon tank...I would still need some space for the filter and heater to go and I cant seem to find any lids that match :/. This video really helped me. Also how should the tank be like should be filled with stuff or do I leave some empty space or..? also how long should I feed the tank for? like 3 weeks 2? 1 month? Also I cant find where it says how much dechlorinater I need for the 5.5 gallon tank. I use the Prime water conditioner.

    • @lishspetlife
      @lishspetlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I would suggest using the lid to a tote/storage container & cutting out space for the heater & filter as well as holes for feeding. I’m glad the video helped :) You can choose to add substrate like sand or gravel + plants (fake/real) or decor pieces or you can leave it empty. It doesn’t matter if you have anything in the aquarium when you are feeding it. I would suggest feeding the tank for 2-4 weeks and about 3 days a week. It should say on the bottle how much conditioner to use, but I searched it up & it says 2 drops per gallon. I’m not sure if that’s entirely accurate though. So sorry for the late reply! Feel free to ask any more questions :)

    Hi, I am buying a beta soon. I already got the tank, filter and pump. I'm confused about the Substrate as it's very expensive and some plants with decorations as well. I cannot afford a kit to place live plants, can I place them with my hand? Please help me pick a cheap substrate as well, my tank is 8 gallons. Is a device that checks pH more than sufficient or do I have to check Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitride levels separately? Thank you in advance.

    • @lishspetlife
      @lishspetlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi!
      I’d honestly recommend children’s plays and from home depot, lowe’s, department stores. it’s a cheap, fish-safe option that I also use :) otherwise, you could look on a buy or sell site, but i highly recommend the play sand! You do have to wash it thoroughly a few times as it’ll be dusty.
      For plants, you could look at live plants. I think they’re a lot cheaper than fake ones and not hard to care for. Just have access to light for 8-10 hours.
      There’s test kits available at Walmart and pet stores that have separate strips to test for each category (ammonia, pH, etc.). It’s better to check the water levels for at least ammonia and pH :)
      Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions! I’d love to answer :))

    Hi, just found your channel. I used to have a freshwater and a salt water tank. My fish lived for years. However, I’ve never had a Betta. I haven’t had fish tank# now for years as we have moved a couple of times. Not planning on any other moves. So I’ve been thinking about getting a beta and putting it in a five gallon tank. Our water is hard and I’ve read that’s not good. So my question is should I buy water for this tan, would drinking water work? Thank you. I’m going to order on line everything you suggested and will let the tank get established before I get the betta.

    • @lishspetlife
      @lishspetlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Drinking water would work as long as the water isn’t very hard + it’s dechlorinated. For hard water, pet stores/Amazon sell a water softener. It’s in the form of a filter cartridge and you put it in the filter. It will remove the harmful minerals in the water making it softer. I really hope this helps! Comment if you have any more questions :) I have another more detailed video stating everything you’ll be needing for a betta, you can check it out here if you’re interested: th-cam.com/video/BkFURKb70_M/w-d-xo.html

    • @lishspetlife
      @lishspetlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi! I’m so glad it helped you! You basically have to have a cartridge in your filter & you don’t need to change it when you first get it, you’d change it when it looks very dirty (it should be dark brown). Moss balls are just a decoration you can put in the tank. It’s a live plant. Yes, you can use API quick start. Just make sure you use the correct amount for the size tank you have. For knowing if the tank is ready or not, you can buy certain strips & test the water, but I think it’s a little tricky for beginners, so if you want you can read the directions on the quick start and see how long you need to wait to add a fish in (since you’re not feeding). I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask:))

      Hi! This one is from PetSmart, but you can find similar ones at Walmart. My recommendation is the 10 gallon tank www.walmart.ca/en/ip/tetra-complete-led-aquarium-kit-10gl/6000187104461

    Is a sponge filter good enough for betta without using any filter?
    Do they need oxygen pump if there is a live plant?
    Is it okay for them to have 1.5 or 2 Gal of mineral water?
    I’m actually having a betta fish someday, and i’m still learning the requirements of it!
    This helps!

      Hi!
      A sponge filter technically is a filter, so it should be okay.
      You don’t need an oxygen pump.
      Bettas need about a 5 gallon tank. You also don’t have to use mineral water. Tap water with water conditioner works great! You can add some drops in (depending on the dosage required) and it makes the water okay for bettas.
      I’m so glad you’re taking the time do to research! I have a betta fish care series if you want to learn more: th-cam.com/play/PLQ-kLLVoWQbqPyfYqm5MbXkHNs14-epRs.html
      I’ll have more videos out soon! Let me know if you have any more questions :))

      @@lishspetlife also one last question! How many water conditioner drops for 1 Gallon? is it 2 drops?

    • @lishspetlife
      @lishspetlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d honestly recommend saving up for a 5 or 10 gallon. Walmart has tank kits for cheap most of the time. I got my 10 gallon with a light, filter, food & conditioner for $60 Canadian. I know it may seem pricy and not what you were initially thinking, but bettas need space to swim and a gallon really isn’t much. When I first started, I kept my betta in around a 1 gallon too, but I learned from my mistakes and realize that it is too small. I hope you don’t mind! I just want to help out :)
      Also, the conditioner bottle will say how many drops to add per gallon.

    How often do you have to clean the tank and replace the water?

    • @lishspetlife
      @lishspetlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on how big your tank is. The bigger your tank is, the less often you’ll have to clean it. I’d suggest doing a 10-15% water change every 2-4 weeks if your tank is between 3-5 gallons or a water change of 10-15% every 4-6 weeks if your tank is 6 gallons or larger. When you remove the water for the change, you can clean your tank as well. Make sure to refill the water with conditioner when you’re replacing it :)

    Do forget to let your tank cycle! As she said with feeding your fish less tank 3 times a week you could also just let the filter run for a while it will take longer but it’s a different way to do it always make sure to do research

    • @saf499

      What's the best way to let a tank do a cycle? And is this only the first time you set it up?

    • @baguette4607
      @baguette4607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@saf499 from what I’ve heard, setting up the tank completely and simply not adding the fish works best. set up the tank as you would if you were gonna out the fish in, and then sprinkle beneficial bacteria and some fish food in. quick start makes the process MUCH faster.
      depending on the tank size, it can take 2 weeks to 6 months, but I’d say if you have a 5 gallon, cycle it for a month. and don’t forget your testing strips!! if the water levels are ideal, you can put your fish in.
