      I probably would have kept the rim for a lid to sit on top of. Bettas like to jump so you might want to add something on top to block him. Also, with smaller tanks the water evaporates super fast. I love the way rimless tanks look though, it's a bummer.

      I agree that bettas have preferences, my old betta loved bloodworms but my new one prefers shrimp and pellets! But despite preferences, keeping any fish in a vase is neglect and is extremely unhealthy for the fish, five gallons should be bare minimum. If they seem to be thriving after a long time, that’s great! But really, no matter what they prefer, this is not preference- this is ignoring the betta’s needs.

    • @Littlewings1211
      @Littlewings1211 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Devyn it may not have been completely about aesthetics. She may not be able to cope with a large tank for whatever reason, or may not have space for it. The tank he put it in is ok for one fish. Yeah a larger one would be nice for him but that’s like saying it would be nice to live in a mansion instead of a flat - you have enough room in the flat but a mansion would still be very nice if someone were to just give it to you. Then again you may get the mansion and feel like a marble in a cello. As long as he’s out of that pokey little bedsit (vase) that is what matters.

    Honestly, I know this video is 3 years old and Jeff is most likely dead at this point, but both tanks were bad. The 2.5 gallon was crammed with rocks and moss balls, and by removing the rim you let it become much easier to accidentally create a burst in the tank. I'm not saying that the vase was better, far from it, but the 2.5 wasn't much of an upgrade, either. There's a reason people tell you 5 gallons is the minimum, y'know?

      AquaLars FishNShrimps That law should be worldwide!
      Sweden is on point with their animal laws (been saying this for years when I was researching about dogs) if every country could take notes on the humane treatment of animals by Sweden, that would be great! there wouldn't be kids wanting a pretty little fish no more just bc it's cheap and takes up very little space, adults would think "no screw that, big tanks are out the question" the only reason why so many are used, abused and treated as a commodity, is bc of how tiny and inhumane set up you can purchase for it, one of the biggest myths for bettas!!

      Bettas can stay out of water for 1-2 hours. Suggest not putting a lid since bettas also gotta have oxygen from the air. Also try to train your betta to not jump out.

      Oinkey Mc. Loinkey Oinkey Mc. Loinkey I’ve read that bettas can survive longer than that... like, as long as they don’t completely dry out. After that whole ordeal, I’d rather keep a lid on than risk him jumping without a lid. My water level is a few centimetres from the lid and it’s not entirely enclosed (there’s like a centimetre margin between the edges of the lid and the tank walls) so there’s plenty of oxygen.. he’s fine

    • @limbotastic7432

    If she isn't persuaded, see if she likes wearing a pretty dress and living in a freezing cold closet for a few weeks, and someone can toss in a few chicken wings every once in a while, hopefully removing the waste regularly. Survive? Yes. Thrive? Not really.

      Survival and Living happily is 2 different things - if a fish fully is happy in an aquarium I cant say but it can be done that way that they have some activity going on. In the wild they spend most of their day looking for food or interacting with other fish (chasing girls or fighting for them) checking out new structures so they dont just float round...fortunately for the bowl keepers fish cant scream...but they sometimes jump out of the bowl- I wonder why...

    My only real issue with this setup is that betta fish are well known jumpers; some kind of a lid would make sure that you're better safe than sorry and you don't wind up with a crispy fish on the floor. Even just a mesh topper would keep that from happening without ruining the aesthetic too much.

      The size of the tank... Now that is a matter of opinion. I know people who kept healthy bettas in a gallon fish tank. Betta spendens, the colorful Bettas from the stores, which are fish that are farmed and domestically developed, they do not exist in the wild in this form. They have been raised and fully acclimated to this type of habitat. The wild species of Bettas need bigger tanks than a 10 gallon. That's like comparing wolves to dogs. Similar but quite different.

Turned into a 1/12 gal regular looking bla tank just because you wanted to do it your way instead of hers , I think the only up grade would have been to add soil under the gravel add a few more under surface plants that could make this a low maintenance tank and maybe a light to aid the plants unless she kept it in an area that got so light, I liked her way better !

    In my opinion (and from my research) 5 gallons is the MINIMUM for Betta. I agree with you that the filter you chose is too strong for that small of a tank. My other comment would be to condition the tap water you added and wait for the temperature to stabilize before you dump little Jeff in there! Removing the top rim weakened the strength of the structure but it does look nice.

      The only thing than an uncycled filter do is elevate the ammonia and nitrite level, which is highly toxic and often result in the dead of many types of fish that are delicate to lack of beneficial bacteria, and proper water condition, like bettas, despite everything that is said about them. Not even that natural plants could eliminate neither neutralize all that shit at once, here is idiotic to do that.

    I have a single betta in a ten gallon and I feel like it's still small for him. Bettas do love swimming a lot when giving the opportunity. So many people think they don't need room because "they aren't moving around," but they just need to see the fish in a large tank first. If you are "saving" your girlfriends fish, maybe she shouldn't have a fish. Fish are living creatures that need just as much care as any other animal, they should never be neglected or given the wrong care if you just research and understand that fish need to be happy too.

    • @killerslowpoke
      @killerslowpoke 6 ปีที่แล้ว +158

      I think you're thinking about cycling a tank. What they mean is water conditioner to remove chemicals in the tap water that are dangerous to fish (ie. chlorine and chloramines) You *can* let water sit out for 24-48 hours and the chlorine would evaporate, but the chloramines and other toxic elements would not. Adding the conditioner would remove both of these, and even some conditioners help detoxify ammonia (another element that is very harmful.)

      Courtney Oml stretch much? His girlfriend obviously didn’t know how the fish was supposed to be kept. Pet stores that sell beta fish tell you that “all you’ll need” is the fish, food, ‘decoration’, the tank, and to change the water! Beta fish are frequently bought fish that are frequently kept poorly due to being uninformed. It’s not THAT big of a deal.. I myself had a beta fish when I was younger and kept it in a tiny tank because I was an uninformed child who was told by a pet shop how to keep the fish wrongly. The beta sadly passed away, but I learned from my mistakes and know now that you should always research before purchasing any type of pet. I currently own a Ball Python that I am VERY informed on and is in amazing condition! Anyway, he obviously most likely told his girlfriend what she was doing wrong and she had now probably learned from her mistakes! It’s really not that big of a deal to call it cruel.. I understand it is somewhat ‘cruel’ but the fish was only in that condition for a couple of weeks as stated. That’s all. Have a nice day :)

  • @WastingSanityGR
    @WastingSanityGR 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A few things. Betta fish typically are exploring fish. They like to go into tight places. When designing the landscape for the tank, keep this in mind. Try to leave a finger space between the glass and the objects in the tank to allow your betta to swim in between them. Create winding paths for them to explore. But don't feel like you have to over crowd the tank with objects either. Have fun with your designs.
    Now for something really bad I saw in the video. Typically you do not want to simply add tap water to a fish tank and then toss the fish in with some water from the last tank. It is recommended that a water conditioner is used on the water as not all tap water is considered safe for a fish. This will make it safe for the fish (no matter what type of fish) being added to the tank. Do not add the water, then the fish and finally the conditioner. It is like poisoning your fish for a short amount of time. The best method would be to apply small doses of conditioner into a large water bottle when adding water to an existing tank. Also some conditioners take 24 hours so purchase the faster conditioners if you want to spend less time on that.

Also if you want, you can get a sponge filter instead of a hang-on-the-back since the current flow doesn't affect them so much. Plus sponge filters are waaaayyy cheaper. I pay 2-4 dollars for mine when I order them on amazon.

    My Bettas, female "Opal" and male "Uchiwa," are each in their own Marineland 5 gallon Portrait. These are lovely rimless tanks which are ascetically pleasing with a curved glass front and glass lids, also half the price of a Fluval but still with the hidden filtration, I had to add a Hydor heater and thermostat, 80 degrees please. Needless to say my Bettas love them! There is room to have an Otocinclus with them, of course Pothos plants that I "borrowed" from my mum and the ever important Marimo. My male was called a "Paradise Betta" in the store (never heard of that one before) and is extremely long finned of course he had health problems, fin rot and etc., however being in a heated tank with a tonne of almond leaves and regular water changes did the trick. He makes the most lovely bubble nests now it's sad when I clean the tank and they get broken.

      @@garylim2040 where do I start with this one,
      1: It would be hard to house that many Bettas because they are aggressive they need their own tank even females can be very aggressive towards each other and "sorority tanks" rarely work and if they are put together they can and will and fight each other often to death.
      2:Also that many tanks will take A LOT of room so you'd probably need a whole bedroom or even bigger space to hold that many tanks
      3: It can be really expensive to buy that many fish and supplies at once especially is you don't have a job or any source of income and you would need to buy the tanks and food too. A 2.5 gallon tank can go for around $10 and food can be around $5 depending on the size of the container
      4: The store would see it as people wanting more fish so they will supply said fish which will cause more to unnecessarily suffer
      5: I don't have any animals but I still consider myself an animal lover I hate seeing animals suffer and I'd love to adopt a pet but I know I won't be able to care for it so by not getting a pet I'm doing the animal a favor and not making it suffer because it's not properly taken care of. Instead I volunteer at animal shelters, donate to causes I support, and overall I do whatever is in my power to help animals I feel horrible that I can't help these fish more directly but hey I can still spread awareness of the cruel way they are treated.
      6: Aother example would be if your nan needed help but you couldn't help her that day dose that mean you love her any less? No, so just because this person wants to help but can't doesn't mean they're not an animal lover I'm sure if they could they'd help in any way possible.
      Whew that was a long one (that's what she said) I hope you learned something from my comment I'm not trying to put you down or bully I just want to offer advice and perspective I want to lift you up so you can be better today than you were yesterday I hope you take this into account next time you try and post a comment like this. Best wishes friend.

    I'm all for moving the beta to a better tank like you did, but it is WAY too busy for that size of a tank in my opinion. Take out some of the rocks or something because at that point it can hide and you might rarely see it besides when it eats. I'm sure your girlfriend wants to look at the fish, not a tank of water and rocks.

    K I'm not saying Jeff had a good setup before but I wouldn't call it saving him it's more like an upgrade

    To be honest, I think keeping bettas or any kind of animal in a goddamn vase is animal cruelty.

      @@GF-gc2kq Let's have someone keep you in a vase for a few years, then find out how you feel about it.

      Bettas don't need a 10 gallon aquarium, wild bettas live in puddles so its not much different.

    By the time you add the filter, the heater and the driftwood....pretty much the same amount of room as the vase..hopefully your girlfriend will want a bigger tank for him.... show her some examples of bettas in larger planted tanks so she can see what that could like like for her fish....

      Room is one thing, but the heater and filter are required, as well as water volume. Water volume is important as betta fins are fragile and prone to deterioration. Also without warm water they can get fin clamp and melt. This is a better overall tank.

      I'm not saying that it isn't a better tank..I know the fish needs a heater... I am saying that if it were larger it could be so much better...

    So, I think I would probably change the title of this video and maybe not talk about how happy Jeff is in his new bowl.

    I had a Beta, Leo. He had a smallish aquarium with a filtration system and a light to keep his tank temp...he was SO happy!

    I work at a Petco and after like my third paycheck I bought a betta and all the essentials but couldn't afford a decent sized tank sadly. Over time I saved up and went from a .9g to 1.5g to 2g to 3g and then finally was given a 10g. Jeff loves it and now has two catfish and a shrimp. Took a few months but glad I upgraded him.
