I live in Rochester NY and have fished the erie canal alot I very seldom catch a small mouth bass i mostly catch large mouth bass ,rock bass, and an occasional walleye..i catch the smallies up here in the creeks..
Just hit sandy creek up man, got a kayak? I can show you the transition points from rock to sand and some grass areas that slot of small mouth hang out

It’s a pretty cool place to fish with all the different species. And it doesn’t seem to get pressured a ton so that’s a bonus. Tight lines🎣
The Erie canal go right through my area.....Delphos, Ohio. There its usually swampy.
