I'm taking my wife out for her first backpacking trip and it feels like I'm back in the army with what my pack weighs. How much did your pack approximately weigh this time out?
Yeah, Bill, same way here with my knee replacement last year. I used to do stuff like that though and miss it but don't think I could do it anymore. But isn't it great we have these vicarious trips to go on?
Murphy's law for hikers: sun comes out when you turn back, or it rains like hell if you keep going! But hey, it's a privilege just to be able to spend a night in such a spot with the weather you had. I have done this loop in the other direction, hiking in along NW Bay and up from the Tip of Tongue, with overnight on French Pt Mt.where there are fine grassy areas to tent just off the trail and fantastic views at the ledges. I'd love to try an out and back over Five Mile Mt and Brown Mt to Fifth, and use that spot where you camped - but so far have passed it by in my quest for 4000 footers farther north. Tongue Range delivers as much challenge and scenery as a lot of places twice the elevation!
Hahaha! You know Sara is along for the trip when Sean (Shawn? Shaun?) has Big Blue (the Fjallraven pack) in the late spring. Thanks for what you do here on TH-cam. I've learned a lot from you.

Your lovely bride continually cracked me up. She kept you on your toes and was the jokester to your straight man (Loved the little comment she snuck in as the camera was fading about how the fire was still going!). You need to take her on more hikes. I agree with the other person's comment about your dog's look while you were eating. I'm surprised he didn't pee on your tent in protest! Great views, great information, great commentary, as always. It gives me a deep sense of ease to know that even experienced hikers make adjustments to their hikes. I've had to do that on more than one occasion. However, I've known backpackers who have "toughed it out" and almost ended up in serious trouble. If I do this hike I'm definitely looking for that overview (where you went looking for wood) and hoping I can sleep on an angle and not roll off a cliff. The view was awesome! Keep doing the camp setup and cooking portions of your videos. We need reminders of how a good camp experience makes the climb worth the miles! Again, excellent job! Thanks for the GPS data and other information as well!
Dude, i`ve totally been there when you just want to look at the camera and say "yeah, this sucks". Nothing wrong with bailing and having a better time at the resort. Good video as always
I carried a piece of 6 mil plastic just big enough to put under the tent, but when taking a break I would put it down on a smooth spot to sit/lay/eat on. I used my backpack, propped up with my hiking stick (a length of bamboo), to lean against as a backrest. We didn't have cell phones or GPS, but I would likely take a cell phone, if it had GPS map capability, if I was hiking today. Except for the first day, all food was freeze dried or as light as possible without water contained. There are some hiking type foods in grocery stores. Kraft mac and cheese dinners had a can for the cheese, but made a lot of food for it's weight. Lipton made some freeze dried meals. The beef stroganoff was very good, but the others (can't remember) were also good, just not my favorites. SPAM also has a can, but it is very good sliced and fried for part of breakfast the 1st or 2nd day. Real eggs in a plastic egg container were worth taking if used on the 1st or 2nd day. We squashed and packed out, in a big zip lock bag, any trash that we couldn't burn in the campfire. When we would be hiking for more than 3 days, I always packed up several days supplies in black 5 gallon buckets with lids, and the week before the hike we would hide these in the rocks in spots where we expected to be in 3 days. When retrieving them, anything that was no longer needed was placed in the bucket when the fresh supplies had been removed, for us to come back and retrieve sometime after the hike (usually a week or two later). I never had anyone tamper with these, but I always had a note on the container explaining what it was, and a request to "please don't tamper with it". I've been on hikes that took 2 weeks and 140 miles. Of course, when passing a food store or pizza joint, we made do with some fresh supplies, usually consumed immediately. I can remember by myself consuming a 1/2 gallon of ice cream after eating a cold cut sub sandwich at one of these stops about 50 miles into a hike.
Have the Limelight for over 8 years. Last year window on fly fell off. Sent back they stitched and seam sealed. No charge. Lifetime warranty. Been in torrential lighting and storms for 2 days straight. Not a drop..

I love the Adirondacks I only wish I had taken more advantage of them when I lived in NY, hope you found parking ok. Having a dog with you is the best space heater you can have.
Amazing site! This is probably the most beautiful site you've camped at besides that one site at the Linville Gorge. That site still takes the top spot in my book.
There is water up there on the ridge in the Springtime. Turn left (north) when you hit the junction of the Blue trail for a 100 yards or so before doubling back on the blue trail to head south to the Lean-to. After June or so it's dry though.
Hello Sintax 77, Sara (h) and Denali Greetings from Northern California. Thank you for sharing your family fun video. I really enjoyed it. You folks know how to have a good time in the Outdoors. The very best of good things for all of you. Stay healthy out there. 🤗

All those conveniences, chairs, non-hiking food, big tent, air pads, etc. Weigh so much that they can make a hike more of an endurance stress test and takes most of the enjoyment of hiking out of you quickly. I was even trimming the borders off maps to save weight. We found streams on the maps and packed a quart apiece until we reached the last source of water before our campsites, then carried a military surplus collapsible 1 gallon canteen that we filled there and went up the last hill with it. We each had one of these canteens, but usually only used one and hung it between us on one of our walking sticks with one of us holding up each end. 20' of parachute cord was used for a clothes line, to pull packs or each other up steep ledges, and held the tent fly between 2 trees as a shelter when needed. Shelters were always used when available, if space inside allowed. Firewood near shelters is almost always non-existent. Always plan on walking some distance to find it. That looked like a great place to hike. At 79 with 7 heart surgeries and metal knees I can only hike in my dreams or when watching you. Thanks for the pleasure of taking me with you on this trip. I enjoyed it.

Haha, yeah - I wasn't expecting that either
