It's so refreshing getting into something without all the bells and whistles. Sometimes a simple little hatchback with a 5-speed and a short wheelbase is the absolute right answer.

It has a short wheelbase, but it feels long. Maybe it's because I'm coming from a MK4 Volkswagen Golf. Mine is probably the S (it doesn't have any S badging anywhere on the car) with the 2.4 4 cylinder and AWD (which means it gets the 4 speed automatic transmission).

@@damilolaakanni I just sold my beautiful 2011 Sienna van for $1000 + an 06 Vibe! Its a much better interstate car than the van was.

The 2.4L model has oil burning issues, but the 1.8L model doesn't. Both engines suffer from startup rattle when the variable valve actuator wears out, which isn't a big problem anyway; just an annoying noise.

I'd heard about the oil burning issue. Not a huge deal if you keep an eye on your oil levels, but could get annoying. Didn't know about the rattle. Good to know! Thanks!

@@GearboxCarReviews Thankfully, the vvt rattle noise only happens on cold starts. It just lasts half a second, then its gone. Sounds pretty terrible though.
The same 2.4L engine (2AZ-FE) was used in a lot of Toyotas (Corolla, Camry, Rav4, etc.) and they all suffer from oil burning . It isn't an immediate concern, like you said if you top it up. But it does limit the longevity of the engine as it will cause carbon build up in the long term.

@Anna What do the brakes have anything to do with the engine?

@Anna What's the deal with the brakes? Other than the 1.8 having drums in the back, I don't see how different engines affect the brakes differently.

Just bought one today with 88k miles on it 9k. Freshly serviced and detailed by the local Toyota dealer. Was owned by an elderly couple, and is in mint condition. What a stealth beauty

I bought my mom an 09' Matrix S AWD, she's had it for over 2 years now and other than tires and brakes, I haven't done anything else, very useful when you need to carry a bunch of stuff. With the body kit and 17' wheels, it's a good looking car imo. The only criticisms I have is all the hard plastics in the interior and because it's only a 4 sp and AWD, gas milage is not very good. Other than that, it's a pretty good little car.

Yeah, unfortunately that's just par for the course when trying to keep the costs down. The more current cars don't have as much of the hard plastic, but there's still some and the rest is replaced by gloss black, which I can't stand. For the price though, really great car for sure.

Is it not?! Subaru calls the Outback an SUV because wagons don't sell in America, and it works!

That's a pretty little car! In manual too?

I had a 2012 scion xb with the 2.4 and the 5sp manual. It wasn't a power house but I enjoyed driving it and loved the size. I miss that car. Didn't realize the matrix had the 2.4 option as well. Seems these are a little easier to find with the manual, albeit with the smaller 1.8 motor.

Yeah, it's a fun little car. Slow car fast can definitely be a fun time too. Small NA motor that you can just wring out and play around with. Plus solid reliability. Nice little cars for sure.

I'm buying one of these tomorrow so I'm not putting so many miles on my maverick. What an engine, I was sold immediately. $5,500 120k miles 2009 S. Cannot wait
