Welcome to Gearbox Car Reviews!
My name is Jason and I have a driving problem. I like to drive, but I don't have the budget for Jay Leno's garage. So I figured being one of those car review guys would be the perfect solution. I'll find whatever I can get my hands on and share some info about the cars and share some background info and the drive with you.
If you're in central CT and you have a car that I can take for a spin, please feel free to reach out! There are a lot of interesting cars coming down the pike, so I'm hoping to be a part of the last hurrah, before gas-powered cars fade away.
If you like the reviews and background info on different cars, make sure to subscribe and share. If you don't like the reviews, subscribe anyway so that I can get access to more cars and find something you're into!
Thanks & enjoy!

2024 Genesis G70 2.5T // Bigger Base Engine Makes for Excellent Value // Full Review
The Genesis G70 gets a refresh for 2024, with the biggest change coming under the hood. The 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder replaces the 2.0L engine. That engine was a weak spot in an otherwise excellent car, so that's good news for anyone looking at this luxury sedan. This engine pumps out 300-hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, with power going through either the rear wheels or all four of them (all-wheel-drive), with an 8-speed automatic transmission in-between. Other updates include new colors, standard Brembo brakes, updated buttons and HVAC switchgear, and a few other interior styling tweaks. The peppier base engine makes this G70 an excellent value when compared to the rest of the luxury sports sedan segment.

Hmm lovely but I go with gla35 I prefer the smaller version .I couldn't do a test drive due it's only by order in Cyprus the AMG versions... October will be delivered somebody will say why so long ....hmmm lest say "this is Cyprus" 😬
BMW still has those long throws. Does BMW have a short shifter kit, because they need that in the Z4 and all of their M cars?
Nothing from factory as far as I can tell. There's probably an aftermarket kit of some kind for the M cars though. I don't mind the throws in this kind of car. It's more the rubberiness that bugs me. I wish it felt more like the Supra.
Good car should’ve kept the v8 tho or atleast made it an option
I think the V6TT suits it pretty well, but I do love an NA V8. Would definitely be cool to still have as an option.
@@GearboxCarReviews it’s just like the rest of the world tryna make everything turbo just no my preference I’ll take an all motor over having to replace the turbo every year
Looks like you have space behind your seat. Can you recline the seat for more room?
There's a little bit more room, yeah. You're still going to run out of headroom pretty fast if you're tall, but there's a bit of space.
Foreign sportscars were always loud, but the only reason there was less wind buffeting was due to the "Vent Window" on each door.
You can pop the trunk using a little button just above the licence plate. Owned an ND1 for 2.5 years and only just learned it
Yeah, I totally missed that somehow. Glad I'm not the only one 😅 Appreciate the comment! Enjoy the ND!
Same in the Fiat 124
Great in-depth review! Yes, I agree I would choose 2.5 as well.
Thank you! 🙌

“This Thing” 😂
The thing with ND Miatas is that they have a pretty wide range of alignment adjustment. They also don’t really come aligned from the factory, so getting a shop to set it up for how you like to drive will drastically change how it feels and acts.
100%. I'm only speaking stock for stock here, but there's huge aftermarket support.
@@GearboxCarReviews no doubt. Keep up the good work on your videos 👍
Thank you! 🙌
Just got one. Wanted one for years. Traded in my 2019 Stinger GTS and have no regrets at all.
Congrats! Great car for sure. Glad you're loving it!
Tight back seats keep your rear occupants more secure when you're hunting down corners. Safety first 😎
😆 ha, I love it!
Get the mando for the adaptive suspension, the sport+ can be stiffer and the comfort more comfortable. With the price difference savings you can easily be at 400 whp with little money.
the exterior design puts me off - will stay with my 2021 for now.
Which entry-level luxury sports sedan are you choosing? Would you pick the updated G70 4-cylinder over the competition?
What's the deal?
Drawing of an original Civic
Great no-nonsense review! I took delivery of my RF Club a couple weeks ago. It's my first Miata; the only car I've owned that was comparable was a Lotus Elise 15 years ago. The Aero Gray is growing on me. I think the gearing is a little too short. I especially wish 6th gear was taller for highway cruising. Every other car I've owned has been similar for what gear you want to be in for cruising at a particular speed, but with the Miata, it's usually one gear higher, and that's hard to get used to. I also wish the exhaust were a little louder - when I blip the throttle downshifting I can hardly hear it. BTW I'm 6' and have no problem fitting inside.
Thank you! Congrats on the car! I think the lower gears are perfect for a twisty road, but agree the upper gears could be a little longer for highway cruising. Man, I'm dying to drive an Elise. Definitely the same sort of lightweight, handly ethos. Though this must feel like a luxury car in comparison ha. You should have plenty of options out there for an aftermarket exhaust. Surprised you fit so well, but glad to hear it! I guess it depends a bit on if your height is more in your torso or your legs ha. Enjoy!
Just bought one today with 88k miles on it 9k. Freshly serviced and detailed by the local Toyota dealer. Was owned by an elderly couple, and is in mint condition. What a stealth beauty
Cars are just to high 40k lol not happening we need a real currency that ant junk a sovereign one
The Genesis doesn't compete with the Lexus really. Never intended to. That's why they built it RWD with a super luxurious cabin. They were targeting the Germans with this.
I agree with you. Honestly, this video hasn't gotten a ton of impressions on TH-cam, so I'm throwing titles against the wall to try to get TH-cam to serve it up to more people.
Great car, hideous color.
100% agree
265 seems like a narrow rear tire for a rwd v8
It's not wide for a RWD V8, but it's wide for such a small car. Most RWD V8s are much bigger cars
Would it be better if these ride on 15s instead of 17s?
Better in terms of what? Ride quality? It might ride a little better on 15s, but I think you'll have a tough time finding 15s that fit, if there are any.
@@GearboxCarReviews Fitment Industries recommended 15x7 +35 on these cars. It seems most go for a larger wheel setup.
@@GearboxCarReviews Fitment Industries recommended 15x7 +35 on these cars. It seems most go for a larger wheel setup.
Do those fit over the brembos or is that for the standard brakes?
Finally, a review of a 2024 Mazda MX-5 (Miata) Club RF, not the soft top. Thank you!!
No problem! I was super excited this one was available. RF Club is how I'd spec mine!
@@GearboxCarReviews Ditto💯 IMO soft/rag top screams chick car. It’s already a unisex mobile because it’s small & cute. Wouldn’t mind seeing a subtle widebody kit on it. Just to make it more of a man’s car.
all these mx5 reviews keep saying the same thing over and over . it’s been said ! snore me !
Sorry man, I don't really watch other reviews, so I don't know what they're saying.
Because they are reviewing the same thing. Should they start making things up?
“The interior is not super high end…” The interior is perfection. Chefs kiss all day every day 👌🏻 BMW could take their styling ques from Mazda, this car is impeccable. Great review!
Thanks! I stand by it, ha, but it's near perfect for what this car is and what it does. It's nicer than a GR86 by a mile, it's comfortable (as long as you're not huge), and it's driver-focused. I'll take it any day of the week.
This guy is an idiot. Adjust your damn mirrors. If someone disappears and you can’t see them, you’re doing it wrong.
Don't know what to tell you man, I've got the mirror positioned correctly. Maybe it has to do with my seating position/height/etc vs yours, but I couldn't get a position where there wasn't a blind spot.
The benefit to the rf that most reviewers don’t seem to realize is you can get the gt with grand sport package which gets you the brembos and bbs wheels still. You don’t get recaros but I went with the tan leathers which I proffered anyways. Can’t do this with the soft top.
We don't have that option in the US, unfortunately.
I can’t believe how inexpensive this car is in the US. I paid about $53000 for my red 2024 RF Touring here in Poland and I still think it’s a great deal for a terrific sports car.
It’s about that in Canada too.
Oh wow, that's quite a big difference! I wonder why it's such a big difference there, but I'm not particularly familiar with the economy in Poland. Is that typically true of Japanese cars, or just some of them?
@@GearboxCarReviews I’m not sure why but the prices quoted in Poland always include the sales tax. The tax is pretty high so perhaps that’s the reason.
Probably shipping cost.
There is a button in the rear for the trunk. It's above the license plate on the right.
Yeah, I totally missed that somehow. I pinned another comment that mentions it. Appreciate it!
The best new Miata review I’ve ever seen. Thank you. I’m picking up a new red RF Touring with beige leather in three weeks. Can’t wait!
Wow, thank you! Congrats on the new car! Enjoy!
@@GearboxCarReviews Thank you, I will. As you said in your video, it’s pretty much impossible not to : )
Hey question, I was planning on buying this car l, is this already from the factory and part of the package or you modified the exhaust
That's the stock exhaust for the Apex Edition

I just bought a tiger eye used with 1.7k miles. Owner swapped ebony for the white stripe on another goldie. My goodness what a car. I walk onto the lot and the car I speced out the night before is sitting there, except for the black badges and splashguards I'm getting. Never seen midrange torque like this in a Japanese-heritage car. I do have a little trouble getting into sixth. I'm not used to a gearbox this tight. Magnificent car!
Nice! Congrats! Yeah, the delivery up through the tach is excellent on this and the SI/Integra. Such a great car. Definitely one of the tightest gearboxes around ha, but you'll get used to it. Enjoy!
@@GearboxCarReviews I just had tech training at the dealership an hour ago, sales guy had been through the Acura school. What a car. I freaked when the first CTR came out. But I'm too old to go around in a car like that, I said. But *this* car, Shut Up And Take My Money!
I'm driving the new CTR this week, and it's so great to be back in this platform again. It's more subtle than the last CTR, but definitely still more in your face than the Type S. I think I'd take the Type S too, all else being equal, for the looks and for the suspension.
Great comprehensive review! There is a trunk release near the rear license plate area
Thanks! Ah, I swear I checked and couldn't find it ha. I appreciate, glad to know there's a button
Thank you for the doesn’t have comments. That is extremely helpful for me. I usually have to dig for what they didn’t put into them.
Thanks for the comment! Glad I could help! That's one thing I realized recently that I need to do a bit more of--pay more attention to what's not there. Planning to do a bit more of that here in the future. Thanks again! And good luck with your search!
lol, my cheap make NISSIAN Juke has 50% more road noise , than the MX5 , 😂
I miss the Snake LED Fang Daytime running lights , they should have put white reflectors in front, instead of black panel plugs 😊
You shouldn't run your audio through a guitar overdrive pedal.
Run audio through a different type of overdrive pedal. Noted. I swapped cameras for the exterior shots and for some reason that kind of jacked the audio a bit. Working out the kinks on the audio.
@@GearboxCarReviews Still a great review! Some peaks in the audio don't detract from just how comprehensive of a review this is. Thanks for your work!
@@renloris460 thank you! I really appreciate it!
Can't wait until about May next year to buy one as a CPO.Looking for the white exterior with the red interior.Best combo in my opinion.Beautiful car.👍👍
Your torque numbers has to be wrong, 616 nm? The earlier model with 390 hp had 640 nm. 455 hp one is supposed to have 709 nm i believe.
You are absolutely correct! The 523 lb-ft is correct, but the conversion to nm is definitely wrong. It should be 709 nm. Thanks for catching that!
I believe this model the 4WD is constant. The 450h+ I think is FWD with RWD kicking in when needed.
Hey, thanks for the comment! I just double-checked with my Lexus contact. It's not full-time AWD in the sense that it doesn't have a standard torque split, but it's also not necessarily FWD with rear kicking in as needed. It's a constantly shifting torque split, that can technically go up to 100% either front or rear. I appreciate you pointing that out! I'll add it to the pinned comment!
@@GearboxCarReviews Thanks for the reply. I am trying to learn more about the model because we are considering to get for for our aging GLC. My understanding so far from my reading is that the Direct 4 system on the 500h is by default AWD. That means the rear electric motor will be driving the rear axle. What may vary is the front-rear power ratio. It technically could go up to 100% as you said that ratio is not the default driving mode......at least that is how I understand it.
Yeah, it's typically going to be some level of all-wheel-drive, but not necessarily in all situations, and there's not any standard torque-split ratio. It's constantly adjusting for the situation.
I am sure this is unrelated to the video but I am considering purchasing this vehicle but afraid of the known issue of the M260 engine having a defect of the cylinder head. Was this issue resolved for newer models?
I'm not too familiar with that issue, but from my quick research it looks like the issue was fixed and there was an extended warranty issued on the engine. But I would probably dive into the Mercedes forums a bit to find some more info.
Thank you for the reply. I upgraded from GLB200 to GLB35 and hopefully it’s fixed.
Does the cover for the panoramic moonroof block out the sun completely? I get sunburn easily and I normally use the moonroof in the early mornings or late evenings. Thanks!
Hey, there is a cover for it, and the moonroof does have some level of UV protection as well.
Excellent review of my future ride. Thanks!
This was such a smart move by Hyundai/Kia. It's a shame they don't have the panache of the luxury brands down in Westport, because these guys are doing it better from a value perspective than Mercedes
Yeah, I think they did everything right here. If you're 100% in on EVs and you need a third row, but you don't need the luxury, this absolutely should be on the list. It's just so tough to swallow if you're on the fence about EVs, which is so many people right now. Walking into a Kia dealer and seeing this next to a Telluride for $20k more, I couldn't do it. And I think the margins probably aren't huge either, they're hands are just a bit tied with the cost of new tech. A lease or lightly used though. That could be a solid move here.
Lol
Great review! I love to see people like you bringing awareness to such a niche market! I've been driving my 2021 6-speed Crosstrek for about 3 years now and I can say with confidence those MPG numbers are off from the manufacturer. I have never gotten anything less than 27.5MPG in any driving conditions and I can get up to 33-34 MPG if I drive conservatively on a highway commute. Otherwise everything you mention is pretty spot on.
Thanks! I wish I could do more of these base models and more manuals. Definitely always on the lookout for stuff like this. Appreciate the kind words! Glad to hear the MPG is better than expected. 33-34 is super solid, even 27.5 is really pretty good. Good to hear I got things right with the rest of it! Thanks again for the comment!
