Orange Amplifiers caught up with Matt Pike before Sleep's sold out show at the Kentish Town Forum in London. Matt discusses his influences and how he uses lots of amplifiers to create a wall of sound.
Why he doesn't have a signature head/cab with orange is beyond me.

1st Because he doesn't fuckin need it, he has his tones with the regular ones. And 2nd because orange aren't assholes that just put mikes name on their amps and say, hey dude this is a signature model it's one grant more (for the same thing).
Only if it was Green like his old Matamp's.
If you do any research, those matamps that him and Al were always using constantly had issues. Not to mention, the matamps of today are not made by the same people, nor are they owned by the same people. Dave Green is the guy that was making those gt120s for them. From what I hear, the new gt120s are more modern voiced than the ones you recognize. Let's also not forget that the gt120 was essentially a souped up or120 and a lot of the newer oranges are closer in tone to those or120s than you'd imagine. You can get the dopesmoker tone without the amp saying green on it. Just see them live and you'll get it. He's also using a plethora of effects pedals. He's got a new fuzz/boost coming out with black arts, and he's using a couple lone wolf audio pedals for his dirt too. Amps are nice and all, but he gets a lot of his dirty sound from a combination of his hands and the pedals he's pushing those amps with.
zakkeryc Matt has had issues with every amp. As an owner of two Dave Green-era Matamps they are problematic. However I will strongly disagree that when he had the Matamp stacks it sounded radically different than he does now with those Oranges or his Soldano or any of that. I rehearse just a few rooms over from High On Fire/Sleep at the Oakland music complex and I've been seeing them for years, the tone isn't close. That being said, they're also finally working on new material.

Hi, I'm Matt pike and I'm the only man brave enough to legit run 6amps at once with pedals on each. Jesus no Mic required, that shit is loud, trust me, when I saw sleep, it was earthshattering.
Jordan Mayer loud is an understatement. You can feel the air in the room shift when they kick into a riff.

I saw Sleep 7 months ago and I'll NEVER forget his live sound. His amps literally sounded like they were fucking on fire.
Dude, when I saw Sleep for the first time I thought "wow, this dude has a lot of dummy cabinets and shit" but when the Dragonaut riff hit my face I started to melt. Being first raw at a Sleep concert is amazing. I'm not a guitarist, I play drums and when I go to concerts I focus a little bit more on the drumming, but Matt made me forget that Sleep have a drummer and a bassist/vocalist. I was so fascinated by his playing and by the tones that those Orange amps produced... Jeez...

Josh B looooool gjere actually is a guy on youtube who is known for being very similar to bob ross and he plays ambient music on guitar. he is called "chords of orion" check him out. worth it

The thing I like about Matt Pike is that he chases tone like a damn blues guitar player... Except he's got the musical doppelgangers for Bill Ward and geezer Butler in the band. Aonghus MacCready green amps weren't discovered by sleep until 1993 during a uk tour. Sleep's Holy Mountain was recorded with Laney AOR's, Hiwatts and Matt also had a blonde Fender head but I'm not sure what model it was.
Yeah soon as I head him say they'd been using them since the beginning I was like.. hang oooon. Some serious rewriting of history there to earn his endorsement haha
But there are Green amps clearly visible in the Dragonaut video like he says..? Al's always been the Green man, not sure if Matt ever used them. Being a pretty niche US brand I find it hard to believe they discovered them in the UK. Citations?
My old band was recording our album at Razors Edge with Billy Anderson at the same time he was working on Holy Mountain and we did quite a few shows with Sleep around that time and they didn't get the Green's till after that album had been finished and released and I don't remember anything by Orange in Matt's rig.
I used to see Matt all the time at Pat's house. Now Matt is a big rock star

One of the gnarliest looking dudes in rock today, but super humble and nice as pie (as far as I can tell from this vantage) I’m glad Matt’s trying to live a little healthier these days. Gotta keep him around!

The Holy Mountain tone was pure Laney AOR 100 PTL though, nothing to do with Orange except for maybe the cabs

PIKE IS GOD!!! Matt pike is hands down the guitar hero of GenX and even into the millennials. He comes from the ideologies and tones of the old school i.e. Sabbath, Zeppelin, CREAM, LeafHound, etc. Mixed with the appreciation for newer genres such as metal when it comes to gain and it’s mixed with classic fuzz sounds. He plays riffs not just parts for the sake of making up Parts to be faster and heavier than other bands. He plays with a certain groove and soul. Anyways I won’t go on forever but I believe a Gibson Les Paul through multiple full stacks with fully loaded cabs says it all.

I bought a dark terror but it was too much for at home. They only sound good stupid loud. They really start to shine when this starts shaking in the house. My wife and neighbors didn't approve so the amp had to go.🤣😂

What does he mean by using frequencies?
When we interviewed Matt he discussed using different sets of amplifiers such as Rockerverbs as his main tone, taking into account certain frequencies and then layering Dual Darks on top for the more treble type frequencies and then usually Thunderverbs to gain bass frequencies. He brings these amps in at different points of songs to add dynamics to his playing. Hope this helps, Matt is such an interesting guy to chat to about amplifiers and how he uses them to add dynamics.

Honestly I lose a bit respect for Matt here. He always used the amps he really liked. He had Laney, Green / Matamp heads, Soldano, Emperor cabs - just stuff he was really convinced of. Then all in a sudden he got endorsed by Blackstar. And now he plays Orange amps (exclusively?) and tells us he is "using Orange for kind of a long time". Uhm...
yprs True, I do know that Matt and the builder/owner of Matamp heads had a big falling out during HOF Surrounded by Thieves era. I read Matt and the dudes skipped out on the money they owed to Matamp cause at the time they got fronted the head and cabs!! with an understanding of HOF paying him back later, Matt Pike gave him the bird about it and burned Matamp..Lame AF if true.
Back in the early days of High on Fire, I saw them play a handful of times, & before one of those shows, I was talking to Pike outside the venue & he told me that the amp he used the night before (a Matamp) had blown out during their set. Said he was glad that the van was stocked w/ more Matamps. About halfway through their set that night, you know what happened? Another one blew. Ha! He had to go out to the van to grab another.
Matt was known for not properly impedance matching his head and cabs in the early days of HOF, Matamp in the 90's might not have been perfect, but Matt didn't go easy on the amps!
In regards to matamp and orange's history,
"SLEEP, from Santa Clara California owned several recovered GT's as green amps for bass & guitar
with various green speaker cabs. On the down side lots of gear anxiety with the quirky old amps
often blowing on stage. These odd units owned by SLEEP, were the only ones in the
USA besides 4 other pieces. They remained a myth."

I'm starting to like orange amps I'm a metal head and been playing metal for years but now that I'm 33 the metal is not as heavy as I use to write so now I'm writing more heavy rock. and orange is the rite amp for me

Im lstr on this but he just means the thing where u know where when u got a super distorted guitar its harmonics come out naturally? Like when your playing a regular note you get the harmonics of that note to just because ur so distorted. He means that, cus u get so much fucken tone. Only acdc was cus they were just so fucking loud. Lose ur hearing going to one of those. Big balls sight worth seeing thoou

I don't get how you can sing into a microphone without screaming and be heard when the amps are THAT loud....there are all of these bullshit tutorials on how to get the guitar right but nothing on how to EQ a loud band.
