Recently drank myself to the lowest point in my life. Month into the recovery game now. Matt is a huge inspiration to my guitar playing. Seeing him do it really makes me feel less alone.

20 years sober, here. Alcohol ruined so much of my life, and there are still ex-friends out there who want to stomp me for the effed-up things I said and did while blacked-out drunk. The toughest part of sobriety for me has been realizing that some people want to keep us in our "box" as drunken bafoons forever and refuse to believe that some people can truly change. Best of luck to you, and remember that you will still face hard times, but you don't have to take a drink to get through them.👍

Him saying “I was just over it” accurately describes how I stopped drinking after being a practicing alcoholic for 25+ years,I didn’t go to rehab or AA & nothing bad happened I guess I was just done with it....I do still partake in the marijuana but that’s never caused me an ounce of the problems that booze did

I know Matt from years ago. I used to bartend in Oakland. He's a good dude with the biggest heart. I'm almost 11 months sober myself working on a year it feels great. We lost a lot of very talented people in the scene because of addiction. It's good to see someone like Matt talk about it and just be honest and a real person. Connolly's and the Silver Lion existed many blackouts ago & those were good times but I think the best is yet to come.

I didn't smoke weed until I was 41 and even then it was because my doctor recommended it due to chronic pain I have. It has been a life-saver for me! I only smoke one bowl right before bed and it helps me to sleep through the night which has been an amazing change to my normal toss-and-turn routine. The funny thing is, I now hate drinking... it just gives me a headache.

@@neroignatiusrosewateryeah booze is definitely more destructive and will completely mess up your life if you lose control. The danger of weed to me is that it slowly creeps into your life without many down sides since you‘re not hungover and rarely feel like shit afterwards. But after some time of smoking a lot of weed it takes a hold of your life and changes parts of your behavior but you only notice it once the damage is already done. But at least it’s not as hard to kick weed since you don’t really experience withdrawal aside from a shitty mood

In regards to weed(cannabis in any form) being used/being a vice to escape the sober plane of existence: It's not so much a means to escape a sober existence, but more of a way to keep the needle ever so slightly off center. which in some cases can "ground" someone, whether or not they've had a history with any kind of addiction, with very little side effects.. Self control plays a big factor as well. It would be more of a "pad" or "buffer" than anything else.

2926 days for me so far. I have a healthy fear of alcohol now...and that helps me (along with other things) to stay sober. When I was drinking I wasn’t afraid to die...I was afraid to live.

A year and a half without booze now. I like that they touched on using marijuana as an aide to sobriety from alcohol. It helped get me out of harder hitting habits as well. You'd have a point if you don't think sobriety with marijuana is sobriety at all, but I'd still disagree, in my own experience.

Matt Pike continues to inspire me! I made the decision to quit drinking many times before it finally became the norm. Hang in there if you know it's the right decision for yourself. I'm at almost 7 years after a solid decade of black out binge drinking.

I've nearly the same story, minus any professional success. Got clean in '04, and was so sick and tired of all the shit that goes hand in hand with abusing booze, it was a lot 'easier' to get clean and stay clean. I didn't smoke any weed at all for 10 years, and it's a godsend almost exactly the way Pike explains it. Seen HoF and Sleep numerous times, and I'm so stoked Matt Pike could get to a comfortable place without that shit AND keep kicking ass on album and live \m/

I’ve been just over years with no alcohol. Lately I’ve been thinking about drinking more often than I’d like.. Then I remember how self destructive I get. It’s not easy.. I feel most of these issues are socially driven and not just chemical

I occasionally say to some people, "Matt Pike (and Austin based drummer Stephanie Bailey) are my Spirit Animals"; and they always look at me kind of odd. As in, "How are humans your "Spirit Animals"? We're all animals my friend. These individuals remind me that we are the smartest animals of them all. Thank you Matt for doing this interview; and for being you.

I wish Matt the absolute best. I know its hard as I too have struggled with it. I destroyed my stomach lining and that was time for me to turn things around. I'm not sober as I still drink beer but he's right about weed it takes away the need to drink. However, every day is a battle but things get better when you get your head out of your ass. All the best Matt!

Much love to Matt. Last Austin show at Mohawk was, possibly, the BEST show I've EVER seen. That being said, I lived in a bottle for a few decades. I've been a weed, water, beer guy, only, for a while now. Weed, water... no problem. Alcohol... shit can get fucked, real fast. More power to Matt, keep it goin', man! Love yer stuff!

I grew cannabis and made my own edibles and it helped me quit after 20 years of hard binge drinking 3-5 times a week. Now? almost 3 years later I am getting more into cannabis that is high CBD and minimal THC. I'm on some regular cannabis now, but I am on some CBD tincture I got from the dispensary too. Got some boutique hemp coming in the mail tomorrow, and I'm growing some light weed too! It's good.
