  • Piyush Goyal is a second generation politician and currently serving as a minister in PM Modi’s cabinet looking after Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution and Textiles. He is also leader of the upper house of Parliament and plays a key role in ensuring smooth passage of legislation in Rajya Sabha. Goyal is a trained chartered accountant, holds a law degree and has worked as an investment banker. He is one of the BJP leaders who has seen the transition of BJP from the Vajpayee-Advani to the Modi-Shah era. Under the leadership of Goyal, India achieved its highest ever exports and is credited for bringing in newer reforms to quality control, domestic manufacturing and ease of doing business in the country. Before taking charge as union minister in 2014, Goyal donned several hats in the organisation and has served as national treasurer of BJP. In this edition of ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, Goyal talks about the unprecedented rise in exports from India, he also talks about how the 'Make In India' is helping achieve better and quality manufacturing by domestic manufacturers and how government is committed towards making India top three economies of the world. He also explains the reason behind the messy Maharashtra politics and exuded confidence on getting the Delhi Ordinance bill passed in Rajya Sabha.

I have been living in the US for almost 7 years now. Atleast, for the first 4-5 years I hardly saw any clothes or art products made in India in any stores here. But for the past couple of years things have changed and I do see more and more products made in India!! This definitely is a testament to our good quality products and a changing landscape of our export industry!

India is the largest producer of cotton and 2nd largest producer of synthetic yarn (after China). Then why India is 5th/6th in garments export? China is 1st, Bangladesh 2nd, Vietnam 3rd. Interestingly, cotton is not produced in Bangladesh. The reason is productivity. India has low productivity in all sectors.

I live in Australia. My Australian colleague bought clothes online and came to me. He said, "Look, I bought these clothes, and it says 'Made in India' on them. They are not cheap Chinese products. You must be very proud of your country." I thought he would say that Indian products are not good, but to my surprise, he praised Indian products. So it seems the 'Make in India' initiative is working and changing foreigners' views about India.

As a power minister he was instrumental in reducing the cost of led bulb from an average of rs 275-375 to 100-150. He placed an order of 8 crore led bulb to the industry. Till date government of India has given free distribution of 44 crore led bulbs to the masses under Modi

Government buys cotton from farmers on MSP and sell it to Bangladesh at lower prices because of international markets prices are low than our MSP.
So cotton which sell in Indian market at the price of MSP and eventually end product become costly.
This is the biggest issue with freebies like MSP. It won't help farmers or indian consumers.

Great discussions always, Smita! When we purchase Indian goods in Canada, we often find that the packaging of Indian goods, esp food, is unattractive, and not convenient. For example, a bag of snacks is packaged in a clear plastic bag while the competitive products from other countries would have a very attractive package. To open the Indian package, you would need a cutting tool while the competition package would have a notch which would make it very easy to open the package without any cutting tools. This is a small example, but convenience and looks matter when people shop. Indian products are superior quality but their appearance and convenience regarding packaging is often inferior. For some reason, the clothing from India is often disappointing. The clothing shrinks tremendously, or even then the fabric is good, they use the stitching thread bleeds color. I think it would be a good idea for India to do a focus group study to determine how people perceive Indian products compared to other similar products, and work on fixing small quality issues that have a major impact on the purchasing decisions.

Fully agree. As far as garments are concerned, India should learn from Bangladesh. Clothes from Bangladesh are usually as per the taste, and likes of people in Canada, whereas Indian clothes appear too much 'Indian' I would say, like bright dark colors that don't really gel well with the crowd and preferences of locals. Also the material is bit coarse compared to their competitors from Bangladesh and Vietnam who manufacture nice smooth and soft fabric.

Wow..Great interview. PG is such a nice interviewee..he speaks straight and convincingly. And he seems to be so genuine in his work and personal life that he didnotbrequire to mince the words or dodge any question thrown at him. And when the likes of Adani, Bajpeyee and Modi has picked him, chosen him and entrusted him with important responsibilities this guy got to have some charisma to serve our nation. I will not thank PG but leaders who saw the talent in him and put it to the nation's use. And for sure thanks goes to Smita Prakash for bringing him on this platform for janta's better understanding about the concoction of political-admin-social milieu around the governance of this mammoth entity on the earth called Hindustan.

UPA had the best cabinet ministers. Starting with Manmohanji who knew all the economics in the world. He had a secret recipe to make everyone rich. But in a forest there can only be one King. In our case the only family who should be rich and powerful is Nehruji family. That is why Manmohanji did not make everyone rich. He instead made Nehruji family rich, his cabinet ministers rich, his children rich and made Indian citizens become rich in ignorance and stupidity who worship him as god incarnate of Economics even though he shoved a knife down their throats.

Get out of the cave my friend. Manmohan singh was on of the key contributor to the 1991 crisis because of his role as an economic advisor and there on an RBI governor. But somehow the Congress party was successful in painting him as the hero for " liberalising" the Indian economy. The reality is that the IMF slapped the govt in the face and forced them to do so. There's a famous RK Lakshman cartoon that portrays what happened in 91. Anyway not many Indians know this cause neither they understand economics nor do they read history which is really sad. If they really did, Manmohan would be the most disgusted person in India, a crippled economist and an illegitimate prime minister !

Thanks to ANI and Smita Prakash for an interesting, widely encompassing interview with Piyush Goyal. He certainly represents a rank of BJP politicians with the most promise for the future of his party and for the transformation of Bharat into an economically developed country, with a new geo political heft, in tune with its age-old roots in a dharmic culture. It was gratifying to listen to some of the accounts of economic progress permeating down to the most disadvantaged sections of the population, such as the tribal community in Rajasthan, that finally had a new two-room house and a kitchen with a gas cylinder and a toilet outside. That many like Piyush Goyal in the BJP and RSS have grown up with a spirit of community service ingrained in their political career and have not risen from an entitled culture and political connections, inspires hope for the future of India. In fact, former Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, mentioned Piyush Gopal in an interview, as among India’s future leaders with the most promise!

These podcast should connect national vision, to that of state mission for a given ministry. Thus brining synergies.
In fact we should have podcast for each ministry, so Indian citizens and stakeholders connected to that can benefit. Something ANI can use to nurture young anchors skilled in a particular area who can connect all the govt officials from center to local bodies.
