I wanna talk about Gellert Grindelwald’s epic battle with Albus Dumbledore that has been hailed as the greatest duel of all time. Dumbledore’s victory was extremely important as it spelled the end of Grindelwald’s campaign and basically the end of grindelwald ever being seen in the public eye again..Now we won’t see this epic duel until the last fantastic beast movie but based upon the evidence that we do have in addition to being able to analyse the relationship between the 2 wizards, I’ve come up with 3 pretty solid reason as to why Grindelwald lost to his former friend and I’m going to take you all through those three reasons today so lets talk.

Consider this. Grindelwald is an accomplished seer. He has excellent views of the distant and near future. Perhaps in one of his visions he sees himself living in his home in his old age, and Dumbledore still loving him. He may, for many obvious reasons, believe this to be a sign that he wins the war. Also he may have lost the duel with Dumbledore because his heart wasn't in it and he realizes that Dumbledore still loves him.

considering that he use Crucio on Aberforth in front of Dumbledore, and his heart wasn't in it the duel, fat chance. the movie and the book vary quit a lot.

Dumbledore technically bested Grindlewald during their last duel in The Crimes of Grindlewald also. Their duel was a stalemate, but Dumbledore achieved his goal in destroying the Blood Pact, so i believe that will factor in how Dumbledore defeats Grindlewald.
I also believe that Grindelwald will eventually realize that he does indeed love Albus, and cannot go through with killing him. Factor this with the fact that Dumbledore had achieved his goal in Crimes of Grindlewald, I believe the Elder Wand will change it's allegiance to Dumbledore.

Although Grindelwald was using the Elder Wand, I think Dumbledore proved himself to be the more powerful wizard. As a result, Dumbledore managed to defeat Grindelwald, and win the Elder Wand.

Speaking of Voldemort having possession of the Elder Wand during his and Harry's final duel, I wonder if the Wand itself could feel that Voldemort was not whole.
If the Wand can feel power around itself, it makes me wonder if it could feel that Voldemort's strength was failing due to Voldemort only being a fraction of what he should be; soul wise. With his physical appearance deteriorating as Harry destroyed Voldemorts Horcruxes, it would make sense that Voldemort would also lose power. He would still be the most powerful wizard at that time, but he wouldnt be as powerful as, let's say, if Harry hadn't destroyed his previous Horcruxes.
So the Wand failed Voldemort due to Harry being the true owner and wouldnt harm its master, we know this. But maybe it could feel Voldemorts power failing as well

What if the elder wand lies outside wand lore? What if the elder wand shows loyalty to those who possess Peverall blood? The wand may have betrayed Grindelwald because Dumbledore may be more closely related to the Peverell family than Grindelwald. If the elder wand is a family heirloom and shows more loyalty to someone who possesses more family blood, then maybe it never bonded to Voldemort because he had so very little of his soul left. In addition Harry possessed two other deathly hallows which are also inheritances from the Peverell family. This would mark him and prove to the wand that he has a stronger blood bond to the magical item and therefore the wand would obey Harry over Voldemort

I think he key point is that Voldemort uses the wand directly against his owner, while this has never been the case before. Normally, only the real owner uses the elder wand until he gets beaten or disarmed.

  • @mikeseibert4889

I think Dumbledore beat Grindelwald even though he had the elder wand because he was the better wizard and the wand noticed because Grindelwald didn't win the elder wand he stole it so that's why I think Dumbledore won the elder wand noticed that Dumbledore was the better wizard so it turned on Grindelwald

There is no way Dumbledore win the wieldership from Grindelwald, if G is not the previous wielder. unless D beat the true wielder before the duel, and the wand recognize him as it true master like Voldemort's last battle scene.

I think that Grindelwald might just give up. That sounds weird but I’m preddy sure that it would be fitting because the most important message in the whole wizarding World has always been that Love ist the most powerful and so I think that Grindelwald might at first aktually win but is not able to finish his Ex off and finally sees how wrong he was. In my opinion that would be very cool to see because in that scenario we would get an epic end Battle but also a kinda cool Plott twist. Even Rita Kimmkorn said it in an interview with her, that she believes that the Battle wasn’t what it was made to be. Also an explanation why Dumbledore never spoke about the big duell later.

It will either be something like that or the elder wand will stop working for him as it stops recognizing him due to being swayed from his convictions or shown the truth. He believes it’s for the greater good. He’s not all evil. If he’s shown it’s not or that he fails and destroys the world if he gets his way, then it would be a complete 180 for his character and the wand could just be unable to recognize him. Just becoming like any other wand without allegiance.

    • @hanmuller9876

Just wishfull thinking. Wenn Harry tells Dumbledore in Limbus, that Voldemort faced Grindelwald in search for the elder wand He also tells Dumbledore, that Grindelwald didn't help Voldemort and that it could have been to avoid the opening of Dumbledores grave by Voldemort. Dumbledore then states, that He WOULD LIKE to think, that Grindelwald showed remorse in his elder days but that he doesn't know if Grindelwald rallye did. If Grindelwald would have given up in the duell due to love, he would already have shown remorse and Dumbledore would have noticed. Also it was always stated, that Grindelwald didn't love but only manipulated and others felt loved. So no love in this scenario.

I just watched the fight of Dumbledore and grendawalt and in that fight there is a point during the straight line casting that Dumbledore over powered the elder wand through sher will and determination. (The elder wand , in a sense, was bowing to him.) That is what frightened grendewalt and Voldemort. Dumbledore is a powerful wizard, PERIOD. His wielding of magic itself is uncanny, and that's not taking into account anything he learned and any magical artifacts he may obtain. Those would only serve to make him more powerful and infact a dangerous man because to much power corrups. And this is what Dumbledore knew about himself... His search for more power would corrupt him and grendawalt would most likely use him as a weapon. . And grendawalt saw all this when they were younger which is why he played on his love for him and had him to make the blood pac. If he wont stand with him or he could not use him as a weapon then he had to make sure Dumbledore don't stand in his way. And being blinded by love Dumbledore when for it.. But as it stands, the elder wand can sense Dumbledore wielding of magic is more powerful than grendawalt. In fact in that straight line casting part on the fight DUMBLEDORE BEAT GRENDAWALT.. HIS SPELL TOUCHED GRENDAWALTS WAND WHEREAS GRENDAWALT ONLY CAME CLOSE TO TOUCHING DUMBLEDORES WAND.

Hello Dean, The things of real consideration right from the get go of Albus meeting Grindelwald:
Albus truly loved Grindelwald However Did Grindelwald ever "really love" Albus or was he
just using Albus as hinted in the books ??
As powerful as Grindelwald is he had a feeling and a fear and being that he was a sort of a see-er
that Albus was just a touch superior Wizard to him, THAT is why Grindelwald put the idea of the blood pact in Albus's mind in the first place. Obviously Grindelwald wanted to ensure his not losing to Albus.
However fate always favored the more honorable man / Wizard because his intentions were far more pure.

Dumbledore was a broken youth. He was talented but very angry and lonely deep down on the inside. Dumbledore lost his father Percival because of some muggle kids attacking his sister. He had to deal with everyone around him thinking his father was a muggle hater and then his father died while imprisoned in Azkaban. He had to keep secrets because of what happened to his sister. So Albus had a ton of pent up anger.
Albus was also lonely because he didn't really have an equal in the magical world. He was seen as a powerful wizard and communicated with notable magical people but not a close relationship with anyone not even his family members. Loneliness and anger were what lead Albus to seek power and in seeking power he because something he didn't like but he also found an equal and a romantic love in Grindewalt. Albus couldn't have known that love was what he really was seeking because it was love that makes a wizard truly powerful. Love is the reason Grindewalt lost the battle, Dumbledore loved Grindewalt but he realized he loved the whole world more. That whole world included muggleborns and muggles too. So when he fought Grindewalt he was seeking to protect the world from the pain Grindewalt would undoubtedly bring to everyone. The Elder wand not only chose Albus because he was a touch more powerful but because he wasn't trying to take the wand for personal gain.
I think deep down Albus had to give up his romantic love to save the world and because of that sacrifice he was able to value the power of love and remember it was the power of love that Albus always told Harry was so powerful and to "pitty those who live without it"

Grindlewald was a true seer unlike Trelawney who's abilities were stunted by drinking. I believe he foresaw that Dumbledore would be so powerful so he set up their meeting. He got himself expelled on purpose because he'd already seen ahead of time Dumbledore's letter saying it was a shame. He went to Godric's Hollow and set up meeting Dumbledore and getting the blood pact. But what Gellert didn't expect was he'd actually fall in love and truly care about Dumbledore. Despite his being defeated, he never betrayed Albus. Unlike the movie, he refused to tell Voldemort anything though he knew he'd be killed. I believe Gellert lost the duel because he loved Albus and couldn't bring himself to kill him.

Hi Dean. Okay. I know that this is very off-topic, and it might not be something you want to explore. But I had an idea for a video to explore the following topic. in Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets, when Harry goes down to the chamber to rescue Ginny, he makes a potentially fatal mistake by throwing aside his wand when he tries to Bring her to safety initially. this allows Riddle/Voldimort to snatch up Harry’s wand. My question on this is, why did Harry not check for Ginny’s wand? I can think of a couple reasons, but I would really like to see someone else’s take on this. First, he would not have been able to gain consent to do this. However, during medical emergencies, it is not uncommon for those trying to help to search for identification Harry for any other information or items that can help them save a person, such as a medical identification bracelet, Epinephrine pens, etc. The other reason that I thought of, is that her wand would not have worked for him, as he never actually won it from her. However, surely it could’ve assisted him a little bit? I completely understand if you don’t want to pursue this idea, but thank you for your time anyway.

I think the duel we need to see is one that easily eclipses the duel between Dumbledore and Voldermort in the atrium of the M.O.M. The 3 hour length is hogwash. Simple rumor. It'd be nice to see it last several times as long as the atrium duel, though. Grindelwald won it from gregorovitch. He "beat" him. At the end of the day, Dumbledore and Grindelwald stood as two magical titans... Fortunately for the Wizarding world, Albus stood just a hair taller.

To be honest, I don’t care about Dumbledore and grindewald anymore. I feel we got the information we needed in the Harry Potter Universe.
I want Fantastic Beasts to just focus on the new characters that we have not spent enough time with. I feel Fantastic Beasts should be completely separate from Harry Potter and create new lore and stories. This is the main reason why these should have been books first.
That being said. Secrets of Dumbledore was better because it was more cohesive, but we don’t spend enough time with the newer characters.

They really need to make it a huge deal. They need to show feats of grindlewalds so insane that they just make dumbledore look like a first year failing student an an American magical school. But the reason that he wins is because he sets it up so that he cannot lose. Just like with Voldemort. Voldemort really wanted to kill Harry but in a duel proving he was the more powerful. It’s why he didn’t just kill him right off the bat. He definitely could’ve. He was the most powerful person on the planet. He didn’t have to even use a spell. He could’ve just beat him or any number of things. With grindlewald and dumbledore you have a previous friendship/romance where one party realizes what they want is wrong, and the other continues to go darker down the wrong path. The logical thing is for him to want to prove to dumbledore that he made the wrong decision. He wants to prove that it is for the greater good to subjugate muggles. This opens up a possibility for dumbledore to use this obsession against him. Set up a situation where he cannot prove the point, that he’s proven wrong, or something along those lines. Maybe even some type of forbidden time magic that shows grindlewald getting his way and completely destroying the world. That he is wrong. When he doubts himself the wand responds to this by giving its allegiance to dumbledore, or maybe not even that far. It just stops working like it should. Like learning he gets his way and still fails the world breaks him, so much they when they return to the current time the wand doesn’t even recognize him anymore. So it works just like any other wand or against him. There has to be deeper meaning to it. There has to be a big reason why he’s able to win. Harry only won because he spent multiple books or movies setting up the perfect situation to best the wand, and it required trickery, lying, and the help of the most powerful wizards on earth to even pull off. Harry Potter does a good job of explaining that the wand is more powerful, but I think we need to see just how powerful. That without these tricks and scheming it’s literally hopeless. Even for dumbledore. That when he wants to he can’t be beaten. Obviously in the most recent fight it’s shown he doesn’t actually want to hurt dumbledore. Might’ve been a good idea to show grindlewald thinking about what he could’ve done in between shots or before shots of what was really happening. If he wanted all he had to do was one shot ko dumbledore. He couldn’t have blocked it. But he chose not to.

Okay I know it’s gonna sound crazy, but I actually kinda believe what Rita said in her stupid book on the subject: I believe Grindelwald surrendered. Not before battling first of course, but surrendered anyway. Yes we all know Rita is awful and keeps telling bullsh*t, but after all, some of the facts she mentioned in her book were true.
JKR has a taste for mirroring characters and plots, both sides ending up with different outcomes solely based on their choices. She clearly mirrors Grindelwald with Voldemort. Both are villains, both wanted more or less the same thing, but each had a different end, because they made different choices.
while Voldemort is 100% merciless, and incapable of love due to the fact he was conceived under a love spell and would not hesitate to kill a baby as we know, Grindelwald is different. Not only he didn’t seem capable of killing a baby himself in COG and delegated the task to someone else instead (still horrible, but the fact that he couldn’t bring himself to do it is a big deal), but unlike Voldemort he’s capable of having feelings. He’s capable of caring about someone. I could be mistaken but I’m pretty sure I once read an interview of JKR saying Grindelwald never reciprocated Dumbledore’s feelings, but regardless I’m sure he still cared a massive deal about Dumbledore, even if just in a friendly or ‘small-crush’ way, and that’s what made him cease the battle and surrender. I mean, come on you guys, In the end he literally died to protect Dumbledore’s CORPSE, protect him from profanation; so if he cared that much, surely he didn’t really want to kill him.
My 2nd theory is that Dumbledore finally got through to Grindelwald and made him realise the atrocity of his acts and ideals, and that in the end he only died to try and delay Voldemort in his plan. But to me this theory sounds a bit more far-fetched. Grindelwald is still a villain, and it’s hard enough for a villain to feel remorse for that one person they care about, so never mind for the rest of the world.
Either way, I don’t know if you’ve noticed how fine Grindelwald seems to be with remaining in Dumbledore’s mirror-verse for their fight in SOD and not spilling blood from others, and then disapparated leaving anyone unharmed. He’s still a killer, but he definitely has his limits. Voldemort would totally have lashed out on innocent victims in his place, regardless of the number of opponents.
As for the allegiance of the wand, well I believe it did recognise Dumbledore as its new true master during the battle, but I also believe it did recognise Grindelwald as its true master prior to the battle. That would also make him different from Voldemort.

I think Grindelwald lost to Dumbledore simply crcause the latter was a better and more powerful and skillful wizard. If one can see the level of magic Dumbledore displayed in his younger days, one can know the power he already had whereas Grindelwald's power relyed in dark magic done with the elder wand. Dumbledore not only was able to cast powerful charms and encantantions but also counter charms, oclumancy, magic gadgets he himself invented (aka deluminator); list goes on. Grindelwald also had these abilities but with the exception of some.

If the wand chooses the wizard and the Elder wand chooses the most powerful wizard, then logically we, as humans, do not understand what the Elder wand considers as power.
Harry technically had no power. He couldn’t choose where he lived, or who he wanted to live with. His parents were dead. He was being bullied by the Dursley’s, school staff and students, he was lied to and manipulated by Dumbledore (for his well being of course), his life was in constant danger from Voldemort, and he was a child. He didn’t even win the wand in a duel, and yet it chose him.
This is my theory. Harry only used the cape to make things equal, or to gain knowledge. He never abused it for evil. Harry only used the resurrection stone to talk with his loved ones. He never abused the stone. In fact, he set it free. What ever he did was for everyone else, he could have used it for himself, but he didn’t. I think that’s why the Elder wand chose him.
The same can be said for Dumbledore. He’s merely a teacher, at odds with the ministry. He has lost his parents, his sister and total respect and support of his brother. He has made a magical blood pact to not make a move against the holder of the Elder wand. Yet when he seeks to protect Credence, it relents.
When you think about it which is more powerful? Someone who is powerful and does whatever they want, or someone who is powerful and only uses that power when necessary?
You must master yourself and your desires to be truly powerful. So the Elder chooses, in my opinion, the wizard who has mastered himself.
