Sailing to Brixham and waiting out the storm(s)

  • We find ourselves recently arrived in the port of Brixham, having just sailing over from Portland and before we know it, we're hit by not 1, not 2, but 3 storms in the space of a week.
    Many sailing enthusiasts and sailors generally, we find, are somewhat superstitious, so when you stumble across a good luck omen like Carly did in this episode, in Brixham, what would that propel you to do that you otherwise may not?

    Also notable shoutouts to ‪@SailLife‬ for his meticulous work on a sister vessel of ours plus ‪@SVImpavidus‬ and ‪@SailingBritaly‬ for sharing so much useful mechanical knowledge, which I'm about to try out for myself with an outboard engine service, wish me luck! If you like boat work, be sure to check these awesome channels out, too!

    Happy Birthday Dom, hi both, why dont you try this one for mooring your dinghy safely and ensuring it stays in the water. So when approaching the beach, drop and set your anchor at or about the low tide mark, attach a highly visible buoy to the anchor line and also attach a pully. Approach the beach with a clothes line loop passed through the pulley. When you beach, tie the painter to the clothes line loop and pull the dinghy out to the buoy, secure and hide the shore side end of the clothes line loop onto/ in rocks or ground spike. The buoy is to show that the dinghy is not adrift, use rope which does not float for the clothes line loop. Ground spike could be a corkscrew type. See Roger Barnes channel episode "Overnight at Sillon des Anglais" for a similar setup. Safe sailing

    Don't underestimate the dinghy theft risk, my parents had theirs taken at night while tied up to their boat on a mooring in Brixham- and they were aboard! Bright distinguishable marking on everything, chain to a railing or pontoon whenever possible and add a tracker disc under the cowling. Fantastic cinematography and a great cast - well done Cadoha

    Chain it to a near bye palm tree !! However -- I was on Montserrat when Hurricane Hugo went over the top of us -- yes it was 9 Sept 1989 and I was almost 30 !!! -- we had been sailing a Hobie 16 in the week before and tied it to a palm tree, which is what you did. We went for a wander after the hurricane and all we found was the forward cross bar still tied to a tree. That said we never found the slide from Air Studios pool -- it blue away during the night, while we were sheltering in the studio. Lesson learned -- to buy Motorbike Security Cables and locks to tie your valuable items together and to or round a hard point.

    Another superb travel vlog, always a pleasure to watch. For the dinghy put a small block of C4 under the seat, get the tracker disc, with geo-fencing, if the dinghy goes outside the area, you can then remote detonate the C4, problem solved, goodbye pirates.

    You do so well at making sailing look absolutely epic! Yet another lovely location. Mistiming the tide when you’ve gone ashore by dinghy is awful, although at least you didn’t have to drag it through oozy black mud 😖. We’ve done that. Never again.

    • @CadohaAdventures
      @CadohaAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can safely say that we have walked a mile in those black mud shoes now, well thankfully it was no way near an actual mile, I'm just figuratively speaking, we screwed up the tide times more than once with the dingy/ spending too much time ashore 😂😂

  • @richardayres2949
    @richardayres2949 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Always worth having a long painter and a short painter on your dingy. When you leave you dingy near some steps in and estuary or river, e.g the Yelm it will still be afloat and not hanging mid air!

    Your camera work is wonderful and the choice of music is truly evocative. When the four leaf clover was found and having watched Dom move from mishap to mishap...I rather ungraciously thought, « contrary to all givens, he is going to get stung by the only adder within 20 miles. » But no...our hero survived and only slightly warmed his hands on the hot oven tray. 😉⛵️⛵️👍 Just made this winter’s supply of bramble jam.

    Good episode (once again), more Hank comments he seems to know what he is talking about.😉 You cannot prevent boat theft and it is more likely it gets nicked at night when on the mooring. Many sailors lift theirs up on the boom and leave it hanging above deck height. On shore take the HT lead with you.

    You were in my favourite stopover .... fishcombe cove. I regularly use the free mooring buoy in the cove ( you can see it over your left shoulder at 6.06 and always tie my dinghy to the handrail on the steps. Had no problems so far other than normally staying too long in the Rising Sun/Sprat and Mackerel and the one next door to that) and have to paddle to recover it. It gets wal to wall boats at bank holidays!!!! Re dog poos my dog (now deceased) had a long strand bath mat on the deck that he used, the nearest thing to grass I could find on the boat and easy to dunk over the side afterwards. What model is your freezer I am thinking of buying one. The seals are a local resident. That was SAugust so you are probably either on the dart or moved on to Salcombe (check out the gin distillery if you like gin) Really nice vid of my locallity.

    Great vid thanks for doing this. I’ve been thinking about those moments when the sea sickness has struck you. I get it occasionally too an it’s the worst. i read somewhere that a cure for it can be to stick an ear plug in your non-dominant ear (who knew such thing existed), although after a bit of research I think the consensus is it doesn’t really matter which ear you stick it in (which is lucky, because I don’t know which my non-dominant ear is). ANYWAY, I tried it when it hit me last, and it really eased the symptoms massively. Yes, I know it’s totally weird but I figured I’d share this, and maybe next time it strikes and you just want the world to swallow you up because it’s SOOO bad you’ll try anything, maybe give it a go and let us know how it works for you. Anyway, happy sailing and loving your work (and of course Hanks...)

    • @CadohaAdventures
      @CadohaAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've been cruising Lyme Bay, Torbay, Dartmouth and Salcombe for thirty years and never had a dinghy theft. I heard somebody rattling around in the small hours once in Teignmouth, but it turned out to be someone putting my dinghy back, having borrowed it in the night. I still worry about it being stolen when I'm ashore, but remind myself to relax about it.

    Great episode, cracking little cove that, a couple of tips, scale and gut fish over the side, I was waiting with interest to see you gut it lol, you edited that out ha ha 🤭 but never leave the guts in any fish and freeze them, I assume those weren't actually frozen but fresh from your friends, but if not always gut fish asap and then freeze. Oh and because I enjoy giving you a bit of stick each episode never leave a pan handle sticking out of a stove,,,, you'll regret that one day 😉 good job 👍

      @@CadohaAdventures I'm glad you take the advice as it's meant to be, just friendly advice, I follow after my dad, he's got the tact of a house brick too 😂 o.k fish,,,, some will say it's o.k but I've been fishing all my life and the fish guts are basically 'a brewing septic tank' commercially they will leave them in chilled for 24hrs (sometimes longer) and then process, but basically if you freeze them the bacteria slows down but still active and it can spoil the fish, especially oily fish like mackeral etc, so in principle gut the fish as soon you can, for instance if I go fishing rarely will I bring fish home with guts and scales on, I clean them in seawater just before heading home, if you store with guts in they will start to smell when thawing, so the moral of the story is, they last longer in freezer because they're a better quality product going in. And it's a whole lot less messier than doing it at home, once scaled and gutted beforehand all you have to do is prep and cook or freeze,,,,, you also don't have double bagged smelly guts in your waste bin waiting for rubbish day. And as I'm like a slobering Labrador who can't resist having a little chomp at the bone I reckon you had right load of fun trying to fillet that bream, with a blunt knife ha ha,,,bream I'd have cooked whole, minus the guts if course 😜

    Its good you have a lock for engine to dingy, I've seen others using wire rope such as your rigging with "U" clamps {can't recall the proper name} but then look for two large rocks trapped together with a space, put the wire rope through and padlock it.
    I watched a couple of British lads who left their dingy on a beach in France and it got nicked. Or not tied properly, i suspect the French being French it got removed by officials. They are clamping down on people anchoring etc.

      Hey, Vince. It's a Dometic waeco 50L chest freezer and seems to run at about 60w? The solar seems to keep up with that, and our fridge/ freezer that we already have in the galley, plus charging everything and lights etc. But if we have a few cloudy days back to back, the batteries take a real hit with the freezer running.

      It is a waceo Dometic 50L freezer which apparently draws 60w? It's been great and the batteries have been fine, but if we have a few cloudy days bs k to back them we start the engine to juice them back up. We also have 800Ah of bank and 750w of panels, so without them it'd be too much of a drain.

    • @CadohaAdventures
      @CadohaAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually have a video of it fairly early on, but essentially I turn off all the sensors (that also kills the use of intelligent flight modes) so that the drone will come close enough to catch and I also strap a handle onto it so that I can easily grab it again too.

      Well our plan was originally to head to the Med. then Covid happened, we lost half the season and then when we could get out, we decided to coastal hop along the UK, have fallen in love with almost every place we've been to, and now had a slight change of plan because of everything that's happened, so I think this is fair to call a shakedown season, for the boat and us. We know what more we now want on the boat, and we also realise that our actual sailing skills and a little bit, wanting, and so we're going to be making some boat upgrades as well as some sailing skill upgrades for ourselves this winter.
