Here in 2022, it's amazing how much more confident Ellie has become as a performer (saw her in Columbus last year, it was incredible). It's really cool seeing my favorite band change so much in a relatively short amount of time :)
Also as a musician it’s way more nerve wracking and personal acoustic in the npr tiny desk setting. Many amazing musicians suffer from these forms of anxiety.
faiq lutfi Yes sound unbelievable quality, I've seen Wolf Alice twice at festivals (tent stages) and one of their stand alone gigs in a venue and I have to say all three times the sound has been absolutely terrible! base completely drowning out everything else!! Could barely make out certain parts!! So this is a breath of fresh air!!
oh really? she's nothing really. I prefer genuine and ugly...even fat and repulsive beautiful hags who are real. this band wreaks of pretense and poser bullshit nothing original so much pretense here it literally drips
Her voice is like an instrument. Her discomfort doesn't affect her performance. So unique although i agree there is a bit of Cranberries influence there. Yet Ellie is certainly her own soul. She seems to tune into some channel all her own. Brilliant!
Some similarity, not a lot. She actually has more fragility than Dolores. Plus she's English, not Irish. She did grow up in an Irish/English community though.
A "bit" would mean only a small amount. Ellie looks fragile here but there are times she is a very confident front woman taking the lead in live performances. But I also know all too well about Irish women, having lived with a woman of pure Irish ancestry for years.
I've watched this a number of times but I've just noticed something amazing: in the second song, the guitar and voice start together, so there is no reference point, musically speaking, for her to start on the right note. She just does. They both start at the same time, but are both immediately in tune with each other. Incredible...perfect pitch???
I stumbled upon wolf Alice 2 hours ago and now I can't put my iPad down, I love that moment you discover an amazing band and have to listen to everything they've made on TH-cam!
Very cool performance. These songs work brilliantly as acoustic arrangements. It's amazing how much Ellie's stage presence has evolved since 2016. Here, she was shy and a little awkward. Compare that to her confidence and even swagger at some points in Wolf Alice's 2021 performance at the Reading Festival.
Her voice is so beautiful in this stripped down setting, i can see why she started as an acoustic singer. I also really love "Zero Hour" from "Visions," where she sounds ethereal & haunting.
And I like Wolf Alice a lot. Ellie may have seemed awkward and shy but she's got it together. They have a good sense of humour. This is a great platform for promoting any artist. A petite MTV is what it is.
I never thought I'd ever feel the way I once did years ago about music ever again. Wolf Alice changed that. Great that these talented musicians are doing what they do whilst making so many listeners happy. Fanfuckintastic imho. Have a great life peeps, we're all in this together.
Ellie's voice during Bros moved me to tears... The studio version almost manages that, but this... I don't know what to say. I get why she once said that there's a hint of sadness and panic in the lyrics now even more than before.
There’s actually quite a bit of acoustic sets with these guys they’re very good at it ! some of the best acoustic sets I’ve ever seen I keep saying what impresses me the most is people forget these are kids writing these adult mature lyrically impressive songs, and performing at a professional level, that’s what makes them so impressive to me ! imagine what they would be like when they get in their 30s and beyond and still playing music 💝💝💝
Since it isn't already listed in the video, the names of the performers are: Ellie Rowsell - Vocals Joff Oddie - Guitar Theo Ellis - Bass Joel Amey - Drums
some acts try so hard to be relevant.....but as someone who grew up in the 80s....loving radiohead, depeche mode led zeppelin black sabbath, and now, incubus, qotsa, dave matthewsJUST TO NAME A FEW....wolf alice doesnt even have to try...they are naturals.....born with it....seattle loves you...i hope all your dreams come true
At 54 I considered myself seasoned and don't spend a lot of time listening to newer or younger bands..... don't know how I came across Wolf Alice but glad I did
@@enkiitu she definitely had vocal training a few years ago.. her live vocals changed dramatically and you could see her supporting her diaphragm in the months following. She’s untouchable now and fair play to her for doing it.
Lovely performance, I thoroughly enjoyed it: raw, eerie and alluring. The unplugged/acoustic sound suits them, IMO. I definitely look forward to hearing more from them in this style.
It's definitely a non-classical vibrato, but it works. Ellie has since developed a more professional vibrato, which is crucial for their material on Blue Weekend. Very impressive, especially considering that she has had no vocal training.
What a great band. Proving that they've got the chops to play acoustically. Her voice is beautiful . Soulful. So many people try to over sing these days. I blame the XFactor. More like Wolf Alice please!
Turn to Dust is beautiful, probably my favourite Wolf Alice song. That wonderful folky Dorian melody in the verse makes it feel as though it's from another time
Just stumbled across this after hearing Bros for the first time on the radio. Can’t get enough of this acoustic version, I’m now quickly catching up with their work, how fast you ask? To give you a reference point I am somewhere between a snake and a mongoose…and a panther.
Sorry was commenting on Fluffy, I’d like to add that hearing the drummers voice / singing on any of Wolf Alice songs really compliments Ellie’s unbelievable singing voice,
I have probably watched this 100 times. Sometimes I think I will just listen to one tune because maybe I don't have a lot of time but always watch it all the way through.
Un. Real. I adore Wolf Alice and had no doubts they'd do well acoustically. Some bands are cloaked in their sound, Wolf Alice one of those... Some bands die in their vulnerability when that sound is stripped away. Here we see a heart laid bare and it beats loud, despite the cold and insecurity. Beautiful. They deserve all the accolades they've earned. As an aside: it's been years since I've heard a voice so effortlessly effective. Ellie is up there with Harriet Wheeler of the Sundays, to be held as standards of this vocal style.
Her shyness here reminds me of Hope Sandoval, I can't give a bigger compliment than that.
Six years later, Bros = one of the greatest songs. Ever. Period.
Your on your period?!
2024. Still enjoying this band. Wonderful positive comments from fans. Remarkable performance, so authentic & so unaffected by fame.

the audio from this video is a major full on brilliance !! hats off to the audio engineer !!
+faiq lutfi absolutely !
They always do a great job. World class show this one.
Hats off to the band too! lol

Ellie is absolutely hypnotizing in this.
Jaw Shwa her eyes...

no surprise there

More like sundays
More English folk tradition I think
One of the best groups around in the past decade. Ellie's vocals are always sweet.
she's so awkward and quiet in an adorably beautiful way I love it
It's easier to be awkward & quiet in an adorably beautiful way when you're beautiful to start.
Totally. Looks like she even blushed a bit, around 6:36?
🤮
@@BarronVonSchnoot ?
Watch their latest performance at Glastonbury. Night & Day.

He was tuning his guitar for like a minute. Pretty easy to grab her pitch from that
wolf alice being stunning as usual. thanks tiny desk for having them!
Stunning...spot on...and disarming at the same time.
worked at a hotel when they stayed for a week. Cool folks. The drummer was a kind soul. chit chatted with me during night shift. All kind souls.
You have to get these back, they have grown soooo much since this performance.

Ellie is so cute in this! I love when her face blushes because she feels awkward, makes it very authentic. The sound was quite lovely as well 🖤
Her eyes. She would devastate me in person.
yeah she's got yin sanpaku, like billie eillish, princess diana, marilyn monroe and jfk.
The eyes chico, they never lie.
What an amazing perfomance! I just love Ellie's voice.
This version of Bros is just so good bro
love how folksy this ver of Bros sounds, very much back to their roots
That little guitar lead at 5:42 is gorgeous

There is something magical in this performance
She's so beautiful
🤮
okay, i cried to Bros. that version is incredible.
She seems so stunningly beautiful in part because she's stunningly beautiful.

the version of bros in this video is simply beautiful, im so in love, the whole concert was amazing, but bros was beyond amazing idk
Takes me back to the great eighties band the Sundays. So sweet.
This was all fantastic, but I was really blown away by this version of turn to dust.
Ellie's voice during Bros moved me to tears... The studio version almost manages that, but this... I don't know what to say. I get why she once said that there's a hint of sadness and panic in the lyrics now even more than before.
It's like her soul is directly transmitted through her voice.
So agree

Never thought Wolf Ailce would dare to go accoustic. They look a bit nervous and uncomfortable, but I think it's courageous and turning out great.
Originally it was just Ellie and Joff as a folk duo, acoustic's their origin :)

They write every song on acoustic guitars. They look cool as cucumbers to me.
Cucumbers are cool.

The bass sounds so great in this
Yup i started jamming along on the bass
This is easily the best Tiny Desk feature. It brilliantly illustrates what it’s supposed to be - a stripped back acoustic session.
love this one- do think Florence + The Machine’s tops it though, probably due to Hazel Mills’ incredible backing vocals.
At 54 I considered myself seasoned and don't spend a lot of time listening to newer or younger bands..... don't know how I came across Wolf Alice but glad I did
I'm older than you and discovered them last December. Great, great band.
Me too🙌
Awkward, talented, beautiful--that's Ellie Rowsell. The entire band is terrific!
She is an amazing vocalist with sounds of classical training. I have a new respect.
th-cam.com/video/FeGmfaSKc_A/w-d-xo.html
You are wrong. She has zero training. Much less classical.
She does sound trained though which is remarkable. Recent glasto show she even sounds operatic at times
She was a chorister as a kid
@@enkiitu she definitely had vocal training a few years ago.. her live vocals changed dramatically and you could see her supporting her diaphragm in the months following. She’s untouchable now and fair play to her for doing it.
There is seriously no flaw in this performance, I love these versions of these songs!!
You've ruined me, I can't go back to the album version of "Fluffy" after this.
I like the electric versions as well. I love it when she screams "So Sweet"! Lol.
Same here.
I agree this is the best version by a mile
I did not even really understand the song before this version. Now I like them both better!
I hate the album version. Only because the version they used in the music video is far better!
That beady eye song, the guitar slide, kills me, so lovely and cool sounding. And her voice is pure magic!
Lovely performance, I thoroughly enjoyed it: raw, eerie and alluring. The unplugged/acoustic sound suits them, IMO. I definitely look forward to hearing more from them in this style.
She had such beautiful vibrato and knows exactly when to use it. Beautiful voice!

Beautiful, mystical music and beautiful young people.
Absolutely phenomenal. Found this with my second Gin of the day in hand, and I can imagine no better pairing. Love your sounds, thank you for existing
Zack Vye Great idea! I've no gin around, but I'll pour myself a glass of scotch and hit repeat!
And cheers! 👍🏻
With 3 albums behind them now they should do another, significantly longer one!!
This Band is simply amazing.
Wolf Alice

Very different from what I expected from them. Great performance from a talented band,
Turn to Dust is beautiful, probably my favourite Wolf Alice song. That wonderful folky Dorian melody in the verse makes it feel as though it's from another time
I like the way she says funny, I've always loved that fluffy acoustic version since back in the day
they're so good in acoustic too. love how versatile they are. npr please invite them again
My God, NPR makes phenomenal sounding vids. This sounds so good even through a pc and my Grado SR80 headphones.....love this band
They look so young and cute!!!
By far the best version of this song. Can’t get enough of it.
The best Tiny Desk ever! I've watched it at least 50 times and it still gives me goosebumps at times!

thanks KEXP. thanks NRP.

this version of fluffy gives me life
Another great TIny Desk gem! Really enjoyed this performance. Looking forward to hearing more from these guys
Have you listened to their next two albums since this?
Ellie's persona here reminds me of Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star..cept that she smiles at the end
The thing about NPR... You know youve made it when you play a Tiny Desk Concert.
not true. sadly so many still go unnoticed or looked over.
What a lovely, intimate little set. Six years old now, but I'm so glad it landed in my search results.
I've returned to this performance many times. Love all 3 songs. Nice blend by the entire group.
Wow! They are always impressive in any venue. Check ‘em out - they adapt like no other band I’ve seen/heard. Fresh air!
Those vocals are so beautiful and haunting I want to bottle them up for myself.
my only complaint is that the setlist is not longer. i wish we could hear all of their songs like this; the mix is BRILLIANT
Yes it is!
I have probably watched this 100 times. Sometimes I think I will just listen to one tune because maybe I don't have a lot of time but always watch it all the way through.
Ellie looks so awkwardly cute in this. Just can't stop listening to Wolf Alice - roll on the next album!
Brilliant performance. Kudos to the engineer, too. Sounds great.
Wow Bros sounded absolutely amazing, love that version ❤
this is where you see a bands true colors very cool colors
I think, this group is so cosmic..That was awesome..Thanks Wolf Alice
We need them back! 😭❤️ Blue Weekend is one of my favorite albums so far this year

I love this camera shoot on Pisces Iscariot on shelf! Best ever b-sides and outtakes record by Smashing pumpkins
I'm with Faiq on that. The sound is so spot on. And the music and voice of Wolf Alice is beautiful bevyond words

Possibly my favorite performance by them
wolf alice gives me such homely vibes, I feel so comfortable when I listen to them their music it's so welcoming and embracing oh my
A regular on my re-watch list since 2016, great performance!
5yrs on and I've only recently discovered (Blue Weekend) the band....still, this raw and pure version of Bros....
so in love with acoustic version of Fluffy!
