I'm a supervisor at a horse trailer manufacturing company. I have experience with the last 2 slideout controls along with another that is not shown. The very last one shown we do a lot of. The last one shown is junk. It rides like a pendulum. There is no pressure at the top as only the floor has the motors and turn screws. There is nothing to hold it steading so it moves around. There are plastic rollers on the sides that dent aluminum skin if that is used on the sides. We have to put a stainless steel strip to stop the dents. The one before it with the gear teeth on sides we looked into that one. It looks like s good set with a lot of positive seal. Very easy to install and maintain. We also use one made by HWH that is hydraulic. Very heavy duty and solid.
Hey! Thanks for the feedback. I have one doubt though... I'm assuming these systems are on rollers below? How do you prevent cantilever loading? None of them seem to have jacks on the outside.
Bought a new Winnebago in 2004. The slide system is hydraulic and has been flawless. There are independent controls for each slide. It uses the same hydraulic pump as the jacks
On the rack and pinion slides there isn’t a motor attached to the pinion gear. The 2 pinion gears are connected with a long shaft and mate with racks on both ends of the slide. They just keep both ends of the slide moving together and even, but don’t physically push anything in or out. The actuator is a motor driven screw inside the gold tube just in front of the rack. It does basically the same job as the hydraulic cylinder on the hydraulic slide version.
Would have been interesting to hear about maintenance needs, support of the slide and longevity of each system. To me, the cable system seems like it would be the shortest lived.
I have the rack and pinion on my forest river cardinal and the system works great. Although my greatest issue with it is that there is no Manuel system set up for it. So if you have an issue whether it be electronic or hydraulic and you find yourself out in the middle of nowhere than your in trouble. Mechanics charge heavily by the mile and that’s not a promise that it will get fixed. There should definitely be an emergency Manuel system set up for cases like this since a travel trailer is for traveling outdoors.

Thanks for explaining the difference in mechanical systems on slides but what keeps the slide from falling out . Is it the slide resting on the side wall . I’d like to see how that works . I’ve watched videos of different manufacturers making trailers but never actually see what holds the slide in and not falling out on the ground.
Same slide they have been making for years, the rack and pinion under the bottom works REALLY well.

On our 2018 Jayco Pinnacle we have 3 slides and three different types of slide systems. Rack & Pinion on the Dinette/theater seating slide, Schwintek on the bedroom slide, and the Lippert/LCI on the Kitchen/entertainment slide.
Although it is only 3 years old (bought it in 2017) we have only had one issue, it was on the Lippert/LCI system. It was not really a failure of the system as much as it was a poor crimp connections to one of the phase feedback for the motors. Repaired the crimp and it has been flawless ever since.

@@kevincotton1453 I have a 2016 Ford F-350 Lariat Supercrew SRW with the 6.7 Liter powerstroke diesel. The only issue I have is when hauling the fiver I have to use the cruise control otherwise I find myself going too fast. As far as the Fiver we like it a lot! This is our 4th Jayco product and can honestly say that they are very well made.
I know this is 4 years old, but I would like to see it again this year but with INSIDE the coach as well. Thanks for you time bud

Great overview video on the different slide systems. The slim rack and schwintek are both owned by LC1 and effectively work the same. (Before anyone comments they do have some small differences due to the controller function.) We have a 2019 Jayco Pinnacle and the large slide uses the Slim Rack. The design is a little bit more robust than the schwintek. Both systems do have their problems, some potentially operator induced.
can you explain more about "operator induced" looks like my 2019 travel lite aura has the slim rack system. It worked about a month ago, then one side went out. Wondering if I broke it somehow..

I've had the hydraulic rack and pinion, schwintek and the cable driven. I've had more experience with the cable driven slides than the others and have never had an issue. I did have my hydraulic rack and pinion slide on my avalanche keep coming out unequally and had to keep adjusting it. I also got little visitors in the underbelly that came through the holes and caused some damage and died in there and caused some smells. They need to come up with a better way to seal the holes. Not a huge fan of the rack and pinion but it wouldn't keep me from buying a 5th wheel we like as well as any other slideout system. My voltage has 3 cable driven slides and have worked great.

The best thing you can do is use a rubber seal lubricant on the slide seals and get some slide lube for the tracks. Do this once a month and let the slide in and out a few times to coat. Two easy and cheap options. Great idea for a video though Joe :)

I'm in the process of shopping for a new camper. I'm between a Forest River Viking 262BHS and a Dutchmen Kodiak 289BHSL. The biggest thing stopping me from buying the $8,000 more "higher end" Kodiak is the fact that it has a cable driven slide, where the "lower end" Viking has a rack and pinion slide and a better equipped outdoor kitchen.
On out 2018 Jayco Northpoint 377RLBH we have the slim rack system on our kitchen, tv, fridge, oven, pantry weighing a bit of weight, I'd assume. It's been a great system with no problems for us or the previous owners.

Just traded in my 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins and got a 2019 Ram 3500 Cummins with the Asian trans. A full-time rated 5th wheel next. Love your video's keep them coming you do a awesome job thanks.

I'VE HAD TWO UNITS IN MY SHOP IN THE LAST MONTH, BOTH OF THEM WERE 2017 MODELS, AND THE ALUMINUM RACK BOTH BROKE IN HALF ABOUT 3 INCHES AWAY FROM EXTERIOR MOUNTING BRACKET

You can retract a cable slide when a cable fails. You have to use two people though. One person has to be up at top of slide using a drill and adapter to turn the manual override while person outside pushing slide in. Not fun but it works. Had it happen to me. Our cable slide is our kitchen slide and is probably too big and heavy for it but that’s what Keystone put in. Dealer installed rollers under slide when they fixed the cable to make it smoother and less likely to fail again.
When the gear box fails, the drill does nothing.
Left turn, left turn, Return - No argument here. But, he commented that the slide can’t be moved if a cable fails. I’ve personally had a cable fail on our open slide and had to close it to get it to move it and get it repaired. It is possible to close it with a broken cable.
Technology is always evolving! Interesting break down of these slides. I have had the cable slide outs in my travel trailer and now the schwintek one you mentioned seems to be popular on my last three motorhomes.
I also have the Schwinn tech slides. I always either run the generator or make sure I'm plugged in before running it to make sure the voltage is very high. They run faster and smoother than battery alone. I keep the tracks clean and keep it lubricated. They run very smoothly and I've never had a problem in the several years I've been using it.

Love your videos, but one correction, on the large slides there is no motor on the rack and pinion gear of the slide. The rack and pinion is there only to "time" the slide tubes so the slide slides out evenly. The actuator, electric or hydraulic, is attached to one of the tubes, not the rack and pinion. It was the gold object in the first R&P slide you showed.

Schwintek's kiss of death, is the poor wall supporting some truck campers wall slide use...Lance is one for sure. If the walls and header aren't super robust, these are a rambling-jam-o-matic! ---- Host Truck Campers uses something like an old Happy-jack system that is bullet proof.
It's been a few years, but haven't had an issue with my cable driven slides yet. Toy hauler, so two opposing slides...one regular depth slide and one deep slide. Maybe I'm a lucky one...and hopefully my luck will hold out.

Pretty much share your opinion regarding rack and pinion, and schwintek systems. I believe cable driven slides would be a showstopper for me. There would have to be something really special about a camper for me to by one with that system.
Thank you for describing the difference between these systems as I was thinking of upgrading my 2015 Keystone Cougar fifth wheel to a cable system. Currently, it came from the factory with the linear actuator assisted by the rack and pinion alignment gears that are not powered. The linear actuator seems under powered and I am afraid that when the motor does fail I will be laying on my back under the rv trying to manually retract the slide-out with a socket wrench. The motor on the cable system is located inside the camper and easy to get to, compared to the linear actuator that is only accessible from under the trailer and would not be fun to service for a DYIr.

We bought a 5er with two slides, one large and one small. Both are the cable type. I does make me nervous because there are some pretty obvious weak links in the design. Over all it is a cheaper and lighter design, so I think we will see more and more of them. I think I prefer the old heavy steel rack and pinion style but there is a weight cost to those older, “tried and true” designs.
Excellent video idea. I’m not so sure about that LCI system though; I don’t like the aesthetic of them and it appears to have a massive hole in the external weather-striping where water (or critters) could easily ingress.

Great simple explanation , I am very anti cable after having a pop up years ago but so far my dresser that slides in and out has worked great. Never seen the last two you showed . Only problem I had with the hydraulic was super simple ,, the 12 volt resettable fuse was going bad and the pump would only run for a 15 second stint before tripping it. Great video.

I have a 2020 front living room. i have schwinn slides on the living room area and the bed room. They are great except i am having water come in at the bottom track. the water seems to ride along the tracks. i put a bead of silicone to try to stop it. it worked for a while but today with all the rain its at it again, i checked the rubber seal and it is good so not the problem. any advice would be appreciated. thanks! love your videos!

I have got screw rods for both side with gear on me Phoenix Cruiser. The issue can be the screw block in the end of the RV that drag the slide out in and out. This is of composite material. This can crack into pieces. Has happen one time for me. Right now I think I have some problem. Its some uneven movement, and the ''wall'' don flush with the slide out on the lower end(tilt)
I am also interested in the insulation on slides - walls, tops and bottoms. I have heard that sooner or later slides can allow cold or hot air in through the cracks between slide and main body. Just how well are the slides sealed with main body of RV? One video complained that while winter camping he lost all heat inside his trailer through the slides.
There are rubber slide seals that seal a slide box in the opening of the RV. Most RVs have two layers of seals, an inner and outer. The condition of these rubber seals can determine their effectiveness. It is important to check them often and replace as needed.
My family has had horrible luck with the cable driven slide. It tore up the vinyl. We fixed it the best we could and adjusted it as tight as possible, but it just doesn’t work well. It takes two people to extend and retract it now.

I have the hydraulic rack and pinion system on my trailer and the only thing i hate is during longer periods of time where we don’t use the trailer , both slides will settle and slightly open a couple inches when it’s stored
You need an accumulator installed in the hydraulic circuit. It will maintain system pressure with the hyd. system de-energized.
Analogous to a capacitor In an electrical circuit.
Assuming no hyd. fluid leaks, hyd. fluid essentially does not compress.
Anybody with a hyd. system would be advised to have this in the event the hyd. pump fails to operate for whatever reason (prime mover failure for example). This would allow emergency operation, again assuming no material leaks.

Ok so given what you do know about which type of slide system do you recommend as the one to get just asking in case friends ask me for advice because I have sent people going after stuff you recommended in the past and told them to check out your videos when they were asking about what other stuff to get and they have been happy with what they have gotten
Had a schwintek on my 2015 rockwood and it was temperamental. It seemed to get stuck in or out at the worst times. Dealer couldn’t figure out why and the reset/manual function was useless. My new jayco has old school rack and pinion and it’s smoother, and just works so much cleaner. I hope for the best. Thanks!
Mostly agree. Swintech I have just seen to many failures on. Motors failing, motors coming losse, Sometimes within the first year.
I have a cable slide nothing to change out a cable and yes when you brake one it is hard to push back in but you can do it.

I am building an RV out of an all-aluminum, 16'ft, cab-over cargo box, rear roll-up door & Tommy Lift. I am planning on one-two opposing slide-outs (couch & desk).
Wondering why no pneumatic systems are not popular given most rigs have air compressors.
I have a 2010 Tiffin Allegro Bus 43QGP . I'm thinking that our bedroom slide used the under the bed Rack and Pentium system. It because with the slide is out you can't seen any thing looking underneath the motorhome nor on both sides . This slide must be hydraulic because it will not push out or pull in until me start the engine. I have been having problems that when it is 1/2 the way out it will stop and if you give it a couple sec then press the push button it will then push the slide all the way out.
The problem I experienced with the Schwintec is that there’s no way to manually operate the slide if it’s stuck in. There’s no access to the motor retaining screw that’s on the outside when the slide is closed. So if you have a cable problem from the module to the motor you are forded to damage the rack in order to get the slide out to extend. It really needs a manual way to extend the slide out if needed
Where the pinion goes into the frame, on the rack and pinion system, is there usually a rubber bushing or a gasket to close the hole? The one on my trailer is open and it seems to be the entry point for rodents.

I had a Keystone that used the cable system. It was nothing but junk. Broke the cables a couple times. They need a lemon law for campers. Seems like most campers these days are disposable the quality just isn’t there.
I started with a keystone. My cables never failed but they were always sagging and despite my complaints the dealer never repaired them to a taut condition. My grand design has rack and pinion. I'll never go back
Good video but did not cover the problem with the one i have. It has tubes/ pipes. I think it works like a screw jack.

I bought a brand new camper with a Schwinn Tech slide. It failed in the most epic way! I have heard that a ton of new Schwinn Tech slides are failing. Yet the older ones worked fine.
I like your videos. I have a 2008 jayco jay flight and it has a system similar to the rack and pinion but has 2 tubes with a row of holes in them. I assume that the drive has pins that insert into the holes as it goes in and out. Do you know anything about this system?
It may be the same system on my 1001 Travel Supreme. Mine has 2 rectangular steel rails with holes in the bottom. There are also a couple of scissor type arms which pull or push the slide in. You would also have electric motors and potentiometers. The potentiometers are smaller than a rectangular cigarette pack which controls the motor pushing out or pulling in and also the amount of pressure it applies when contacting the side of the trailer....a limit switch. They will be beige or black.If this is the type you have, there is lots of info and pics I can provide to maybe save you some problems down the road.
What about the chain driven slides that IWS Class C r.v. use.They have a crack you use if there is a issue with slide.

Great video! We’re thinking to buy new Jayco Redhawk Class C. We’ve been told it has PowerGear slide (Lippert). What type is that, how reliable is it, and is it easy to manually retract if it malfunctions? I’m not very handy and concerned with getting stuck somewhere.
Without seeing it in action, I don't understand how the cable system "pushes" a slide out. I can visualize in my lizard brain how the cable system can pull a slide in, but not how it extends the slide :(.

If you can visualize how the slide is pulled in then you can visualize how the slide is pulled out. The brackets and cables you saw on the outside portion of the slide are mirrored on the inside portion of the slide. The cables are routed through fixed pulleys attached to the inside of the trailer. Each side of the slide box, 2 cables attach to the top (1 inside and 1 outside) and 2 attach to the bottom (1 inside and 1 outside). When the cables are pulled they make the slide move in or out.

Not a fan of cable driven. I’ve seen a major mess from one screwing up. They were pulling their slide in and it pulled the exterior wall loose ripping it from the RV. It was very ugly situation.
That’s what I don’t like about cable driven. They pull on the wall, if the slide binds at the floor the wall is what gives up.

What kind of slide systems do full time/ park models use that don't need external support to keep slides from sagging?
You must find out why the slide is sagging first. The most robust system would be the standard Rack and Pinion because it uses the most significant materials.

How bad is replacing a cable in field. We have an Open Range w/ 3 cable systems.
Schwintek seems like junk to me. I just had to replace a motor and the slide controller on my 2019 Jayco Eagle. That damn thing had been giving me problems since I got it. My other 2 slides are rack n pinion and they are way better, robust, and reliable
That sucks. The "schwintek" is the ones I think I have, but no issues yet. Thankfully!
I do not like my cable slide system, the pulley on the inside of the rv ripped off the wall and it took several hrs to fix it.

Truck camper with slides, off road / over landing capability, 4 seasons/ living, fully contained . Does such a thing exist or have I just not found it yet ? I have analyzed to the point of paralysis. I’m stuck, I can’t afford an expensive expedition vehicle. I’ve thought of a 3500 or 350 truck minimum with everything from a pop up style camper so as to not get to top heavy , fully contained, yada yada yada and I really could use some good advice to help me get unstuck. I’ve got to get my rig pulled together some way soon , I am running out of time. It might take both front AND back wenches to pull me out of this , btw , my dream rig must also have both, weight and payload is also a BIG factor in my endeavors. Lol🤣 HEEEEEELP 😫😫😭😭🤪🤪 me out J.D .
