Good comprehensive video Josh. I have a rack and pinion model and for 10 years had no issues then had trouble with the pinion gear stripping out. I replaced it and all seemed well for about three years then it happened again. Bought another 40 dollar gear and was installing it when I noticed the gears didn't mesh up. They literally were barely touching on the tips of the gears. After much investigation I found that the German made motor (Really nice quality) had a series of 8 screws that held the head of the motor in place where the initial gear reduction was located. These fasteners had loosened over time and the sheer torque of the motor rotating caused the pinion to move out of alignment making it appear that the gears were stripped. I wrapped it in some rags and placed the thing in a vise and tightened them all up. The pinion came back into alignment so the gears meshed perfectly. Never would have suspected this to be the issue and two pinions later plus the original, the problem is solved. The original gears will actually will work now that it all aligns properly so I have two slightly worn backups. The strangest part to me is that this trailer has only been on the road twice for a total of about 450 miles. It's been stationary for 15 years. Rack and pinion slides work well but aging parts do require periodic adjustment!!
Thank you for posting this. Most videos I’ve seen are anywhere from 6-10 years old. I think the RV business has a problem with updating information on their products! You are helping to solve that!
I've been doing acrobatics, trying to find the floor plan I want. It is increasingly obvious to me that in order to get what I want, I will have to consider a slide. Which I didn't want. Thank you for a complete review of all the slide systems. Take it from me. I will never again purchase any RV with a Shwintek. Pure and simple the biggest piece of crap you will ever have to deal with. I have a Redwood RV. Not cheap. I have a slide that I have now replaced motors on. And paid to have it professionally reworked 4 times. Failed again first time out.
We bought a 2014 bullet and had the cable slide system. It worked great and was quiet. The only problem we had was the motor was defective, the gears in the motor broke. It did leave us with the slide out about 6 inches and i was lucky that I was able to push it in by hand, because the motor gears were broken it didn't allow to use the manual slide attachment. Who’s had the cable slide fail? ✋👋 This Guy. Who’s had to manually bring the cable slide in with a drill and the flexible bit? ✋👋 This Guy! One of the cables on our slide broke and the slide would not come in. The actual cable broke and the RV is only a couple months old. I had to manually override the slide to get it in to tow it to the dealer to be fixed. I know I may be the exception but it doesn’t give me a lot of confidence in cable slides. Hoping it holds up from here on out...🤞 But, great video Josh. Thanks for keeping us all informed on this RV stuff.
Haylett RV - That is very true and I get that. If the new cable lasts without issue I’ll be happy with it. The silver lining was that I got experience manually overriding the slides in my driveway instead of in a park or somewhere with no help or cell service. Always try to look on the bright side of life...
Awesome vid Josh! I have a 2013 Bullet Premiere with 2 Accuslide systems. I have to adjust slack on the in cables but like you noted, it's no big deal. Take off foam things and turn adjuster nuts. Takes 2 mins and I do maybe once/yr.
I currently have my cables and chains all off as I'm looking at the upper inner cables since they seem to be rubbing the outer jambs on the inside towards the slidout room. Wondering if the jamb pulleys are worn or need some shims to space them back out. Not a repair for all of course but I'm the type that takes everything apart.
Love the rear cap! 2020 was great... 2021 is a grand slam! As for bathroom sinks. 1 I think I would prefer. Counter space i think I would like and use more.
Like your explanation of the different slide out types. Very informative. I have a Mallard 34’ travel trailer with 3 slide outs with the cable system and I found out the hard way that when you push in the big slides that cables go slack and you have to put tension on the cables by pressing the out button until the cables are under tension again. I did not know that and after driving some bumpy roads to a campground to set up and push the slides out, we heard a weird noise to find out that the chains had come of the sprockets due to not having put tension on the cables driving over the bumpy roads. Luckily my local camper repair shop had an opening to bring in the trailer for repair. I wish they would explain something like that when you buy a trailer with the cable slide out system or would put that in the manual.
Josh, I was told by a local mechanic that the wire will stretch over time and need to be tightened. It is not inexpensive to do. Another great video, thank you.
Can it stretch? Sure. Same as your seals or anything else. RVs are built with an intended life span. Also, stretching a cable and disabling the slide as a result are two different things. Cable slides aren't new. I see them come in on older used RVs all the time. Slides work fine.
The cable slides remind me of the cable lift systems they put in pop-ups. I had a 1973 starcraft pop-up and I finally replaced the cable lift system in like 2005 or '06. They last a looong time.

Cable Slide Overrides are located at the top/center of the slide. There is a big bulky piece of slide fascia that's actually the cover for the motor override.
I just found you and have been binge watching all day.We have had our rack and pinion slide out fixed twice and it broken again.The motor works fine.It takes 3 people to close it!!!1 to push the button while 2 on the outside pushing it in😆😆😆.Never knew to check on top or under for debris.Do you think if we checked on top,bottom and underneath and there is nothing,what do we do then? new sub. Thank you for all the great information. I am interested in a cougar 27sgs with all cable slides and was put off by the cable system. But this video and a few others have started to change my mind.
Cables tend to stretch and break. Schwintek are fine as long as it is not a super slide, too heavy. The rack and pinion type slideouts are the most trustworthy made. So says a friend of mine that works on rv's. Take it for what it's worth.
I will admit I personally have the most peace of mind with rack and pinion as well I know mfg agents advise cable slides are better statistically, but I also know that rack and pinion system still gets the job done after a dozen years reliably
My mom's RV just had to be serviced with a cable slide. Wire snapped and pulley system got messed up....she also had another slide fail last year (RV is only a few years old other time was a motor issue). They may be reliable for some but for her she never wants cable slides again. (I think at this point she has almost 4K into repairing)

Norco Accuslide pulls in and out. Pull your top trim off and take a look at the cables and adjusters. Couple of excellent newer vids on YT showing how to adjust. Does the motor run but no movement?
Hi Josh, thank you for your help with understanding all these things. I need some help BADLY: I live in the middle of nowhere by myself, without even neighbors, except one, whom I try not to over-bother, LOL. I have a Hoosier Maverick that I purchased from Haylett in 2013, that has been my nemesis and truthfully, I am hurt by the lack of information that was provided to me, hence I only had major problems every time I used it. I can NOT bring it to Haylett, I live 6 hours away, and I would like to trouble shoot as much as I can, because I don't want to be without a trailer in case of an emergency for one of my horses. However, the slide is not working, not even a click or a buzz, and I cannot locate the mechanism. HELP????
There's no way I can trouble shoot something like that via TH-cam's very limited text chat. But that's why we have a service team. Give them a call and let them go to work for you.
Informative as always Josh! Is it acceptable to use my schwintek dinette slide out in the “in” position while traveling and stopping at say a rest area for the night and unable to use my slide out? Will be using it to eat at and have a 4 year old and 2 year old that would be sleeping on it. Thanks!!!
We are not handling that brand currently so I cannot speak on their behalf really Beyond that - I would say yes. I do not commonly see them used inappropriately

Hi Josh I'm looking at the 2024 Rockwood 282RD which does not allow bathroom access when the kitchen slide is in travel mode. I know the slide mechanism is rack and pinion and I have heard that this slide mechanism allows partial opening while rig is attached to vehicle so to allow quick access to stair and bathroom. Is that true? Recommended?
so funny - I literally just recorded that one yesterday and told the factory to consider travel access in models today on that model! Rack and pinion does allow for partial opening. That's correct. Hey Josh I really enjoyed the video, but I am wondering of the quality of the slide walls, I looking for an rv right now to replace the one that flooded, but I see a definite quality issue between that of a Cherokee travel trailer and say a Rockwood Signature, the Cherokee slide walls on the outside look flimsy and soft while that of the Rockwood is like a hard laminate. Could you elaborate on this a bit please.
Laminated Slide-end Walls look/feel solid. When you can fist-thump on something it makes you feel good. But there's no strength difference between a laminated and non-laminated slide end wall. Frankly, non-laminated slide end walls are lighter in weight and allow you to run wiring thru them for power outlets which is pretty sweet.
It wasn't just open range -- it was the Supplier of the Accu slide system. It affected a large number of MFGs. Open Range was one of many of them. SOME Keystone sub-brands suffered from the same issues, but there are different suppliers of cable slides. Not ALL of them had the same challenges. The reason this is so highly associated with "Open Range" was due to the fact that they used that accu-slide system almost exclusively at the time on their wide body models. That was also resolved over a year ago & hasn't been an issue since.
Well what can l say but ( you did it again Josh ) l have been trying to find the answer to the question, What are the depths of fiftwheel slides l kept on getting answes like 101 or 96 inches like I was dumb or something. When l saw this video l told myself voila Josh is the smart guy on the internet on these matters and in the middle of the video l heard these magic words ( like the up to 36 inch slides ) l kid you not l felt so relieved and happy. If l could have hit the like button 50 times l would have. So thanks and thanks again so would this meana unit of 101 inches plus 2 times 36 inches facing each other would be 173 inches thus 14.41 feet?
This isn't something that specific to brand X or Y, but rather to specific floor plans. Typically Jayco tends to do well by offering both a true hide-a-bed or theater sofa + true U-Dinette which means an extra long slide, but they're certainly not the only ones.
Everyone seems to be afraid to say this is the best slide. I am stranded in KC because slide will not go out. New Thor class A. Swinntec slide. I am looking at Newmar and Tiffin. And guess what Josh. There usually is a best!
It's not a matter of being "afraid to say THIS is the best slide," it's that each slide system has benefits and drawbacks. I'm sorry to hear about your challenges and hope you're able to get moving again soon!

I have an 07 keystone Raptor. After I bring my slides, they start to slowly work their way out. I can't seem to get a schematic from keystone. Could you give me an idea of what might be the culprit that's causing this? Then I could have a better chance of tracking it down. Right now, I don't have a clue. Thsnk you Josh.
I'm afraid I cannot assist with this one. Sounds like a failing slide system clutch. Low dollar solution? Measure the distance between the slide flange and sidewall, cut a board to match, put something like a scrap of carpet on the ends so it's not rough wood contact, and make your own slide block bars. Not ideal, but would be effective.
Good video. Answered a few questions I had. But how do they work? Like the cable driven slides? What pushes the slide out? I'm assuming the cables bring the slide in but how do they push it out?
I will say I don't fully understand the push/pull mechanic of a cable slide myself. I'm sure it's very simple and I've had it explained to me, but it just doesn't sink in and register with how my brain works. But I also don't know the exact working details of the engine or transmission in the car I drive every day. It works. I know that much lol
It's probably just a horizontal version of the cable lift system in a pop-up. i redid one once and the system was ingenious but I couldn't explain it. There's probably a video somewhere on TH-cam that shows it.
Thanks for the overview. One thing that hangs me up is how slides I’ve seen still appear to be “rodent friendly”. I’m mostly referring to the heavier units, especially those slides above the axles. How do they keep mice from entering the underbelly with all those obvious holes required for slide mechanicals? Thanks
It should be noted there are fewer ways for Rodents to enter an RV than there are houses. The difference is you don't tend to leave a house unattended next to tall grasses the way many RVs are left. The noise you make inside a home naturally acts as some level of deterrent as well. Bottom line is if a mouse wants to get into something, then it's going to get into something. I've seen instances of mice gnawing through literal concrete. Best you can do is fill your RV with various deterrents (easy enough to google search solutions).
Josh, I have one of those never heard of failures. My 2019 Bullet was fine, worked great, went in to my dealership for other work and on returning home and setting up the unit and extending the slide it made LOUD grinding and didnt go out well. I inspected the exterior I found sagging on one side of the cables.Called andreturned it to my dealer, and now what a run around. The dealership is saying I was at fault , and I need to pay the price. I'm having a hard time finding parts or How to fix it video's to walk me thru the repair. I bought a lemon, it's been one thing after another. Any suggestions to help me out?
A question for you friend, we bought a used 2005 Trail-Bay Travel-lite 5TH wheel, and the Glide-out has to be cranked in, I know it is underneath the rig? If you have a video showing this process, please give me a link?
The lack of expansive living space and private sleeping. In the same amount of room/weight/cost you can get a traditional side-living slide out and private bedroom MOST folks find preferable.
Do you have a video showing proper slide operation? In other words how do I know when my slide is all the way In/Out without damaging anything? PDI wasn't real thorough on this topic. Thx
Based on your two recent posts it sounds like you were rushed out of that place as quickly as possible. You may contact asking for additional assistance as this is an extremely basic inquiry. I'm curious as to what else they didn't tell you. In short: you push the button till it stops moving and you hear the motor groan a bit. As soon as the sound changes you stop.

What's your opinion on skirting and if it's a positive one, well... what are the best options for someone who want the most durable, best value and maybe the most economical single-use option?
If you’re going to camp thru the coldest seasons, then it’s a really good idea. I have seen some people use varieties that almost stick on like tape for single use, but I dislike how they can leave signatures on the RV I would do some looking into them to see what style might work best for you

Another great video Josh! Question though. My wife and I are purchasing an '05 Rockwood Mini Lite 2109S. I didn't see any slide mechanism on the sides so I looked underneath and saw a lone, toothed rack mechanism in the center, mounted directly to the bottom of the slide-out. Thank you for the informative video, Josh. For several years I have had my concerns about all the different slide mechanisms. You have answered many of my questions and I greatly appreciate how you explained pros and cons of each. I have one question though. If a customer found the perfect structure and floorplan of a travel trailer but hypothetically didn’t like the stock slide mechanism, have you ever heard of a custom ordered trailer using a different slide technology? This may be a pain in the butt question because all mfgr’s have different policies. But if it was a given that a different system would work, is it conceivable that a factory would or could build it to order? A simple sentence or two in reply would be greatly appreciated. Fair question regarding ordering an RV with a different slide type, but that's 100% not available. That would COMPLETELY change things like wall/floor/frame engineering, wall cut/sizes, etc. It would literally need to be re-designed almost from the ground up.
The problem with the Schwintek is how difficult it is to replace a motor. Especially if the motor is close to a corner wall. Lippert needs to redesign to make this easier to service.

I can definitely say I have been looking at these recently and thought the cable slides looked stupid cheap. Too bad Keystone doesn't use Azdel. I'd love to hear how manufacturers argue against using Azdel. I love the Keystone Premier trailers, but no Azdel.....

@@JoshtheRVNerd Good video, I am clear on my thought of deflection of the weight / and the seals are good --- mine is a 2006 Terry - Quantum 33' --- 14 years old. I am using this on my property in south Florida, for a full time set up with slides out and they are large slides, and it will not be traveling.. Take the age and the full time set up, as a factor and to take the shaking out of it during walking and wind.. Should i used them for minor deflection and to stabilize the movement... Thank You
I'm not aware of a recurring event on MHC slides currently. Given the number we sell it stands to reason I'd have heard of a systemic issue. We've always been quite happy with Montana's engineering actually. May I ask what information you received to give you the impression of a challenge currently?

@@adrianabayari Note the dates -- that is historic. No such problem exists currently. The issue had nothing to do with Montana, but rather the slide out system provider. Open Range used the same supplier at the time and suffered the same issue. It was vendor related -- not MFG error. The vendors changed specs and engineering on a slide system a LOT of companies used without sharing the details. The vendor's new design was flawed and caused a lot of issues for a lot of people. Thankfully, it's been resolved for 3-4 years.

Best explanation on slides ever, PERIOD. I have cable on my 2018 Keystone Outback 266RB. Smooth and it is fairly quite.

Our 2018 bullet slide motor leaked on to the slide roof and bubbled up the material. Taking it in Wednesday to have them look at it.

Nothing is 100% failure proof. A case like yours is certainly the exception to the rule.

I have a Mallard 34’ travel trailer with 3 slide outs with the cable system and I found out the hard way that when you push in the big slides that cables go slack and you have to put tension on the cables by pressing the out button until the cables are under tension again. I did not know that and after driving some bumpy roads to a campground to set up and push the slides out, we heard a weird noise to find out that the chains had come of the sprockets due to not having put tension on the cables driving over the bumpy roads. Luckily my local camper repair shop had an opening to bring in the trailer for repair. I wish they would explain something like that when you buy a trailer with the cable slide out system or would put that in the manual.

Josh, I was told by a local mechanic that the wire will stretch over time and need to be tightened. It is not inexpensive to do. Another great video, thank you.
Can it stretch? Sure.
Same as your seals or anything else. RVs are built with an intended life span.
Also, stretching a cable and disabling the slide as a result are two different things.
Cable slides aren't new. I see them come in on older used RVs all the time. Slides work fine.
The cable slides remind me of the cable lift systems they put in pop-ups. I had a 1973 starcraft pop-up and I finally replaced the cable lift system in like 2005 or '06. They last a looong time.

Cable Slide Overrides are located at the top/center of the slide. There is a big bulky piece of slide fascia that's actually the cover for the motor override.

I just found you and have been binge watching all day.We have had our rack and pinion slide out fixed twice and it broken again.The motor works fine.It takes 3 people to close it!!!1 to push the button while 2 on the outside pushing it in😆😆😆.Never knew to check on top or under for debris.Do you think if we checked on top,bottom and underneath and there is nothing,what do we do then? Cables tend to stretch and break. Schwintek are fine as long as it is not a super slide, too heavy. The rack and pinion type slideouts are the most trustworthy made. So says a friend of mine that works on rv's. Take it for what it's worth.
I will admit I personally have the most peace of mind with rack and pinion as well
I know mfg agents advise cable slides are better statistically, but I also know that rack and pinion system still gets the job done after a dozen years reliably
My mom's RV just had to be serviced with a cable slide. Wire snapped and pulley system got messed up....she also had another slide fail last year (RV is only a few years old other time was a motor issue). They may be reliable for some but for her she never wants cable slides again. (I think at this point she has almost 4K into repairing)
I can respect her position. It doesn't matter how rare something is when it happens to you personally naturally
Seems to me that as long as the manufacturer puts the right one in for the job it's all good.

On a cable system what pushs out the slide. My 2013 keystone won't go out something holding it at the bottom corner
Norco Accuslide pulls in and out. Pull your top trim off and take a look at the cables and adjusters. Couple of excellent newer vids on YT showing how to adjust. Does the motor run but no movement?
Which slide system has a prob. with partial open and close for quick access to bath or frig?

Hi Josh, thank you for your help with understanding all these things. I need some help BADLY: I live in the middle of nowhere by myself, without even neighbors, except one, whom I try not to over-bother, LOL. I have a Hoosier Maverick that I purchased from Haylett in 2013, that has been my nemesis and truthfully, I am hurt by the lack of information that was provided to me, hence I only had major problems every time I used it. I can NOT bring it to Haylett, I live 6 hours away, and I would like to trouble shoot as much as I can, because I don't want to be without a trailer in case of an emergency for one of my horses. However, the slide is not working, not even a click or a buzz, and I cannot locate the mechanism. HELP????
There's no way I can trouble shoot something like that via TH-cam's very limited text chat. But that's why we have a service team. Give them a call and let them go to work for you.

Informative as always Josh! Is it acceptable to use my schwintek dinette slide out in the “in” position while traveling and stopping at say a rest area for the night and unable to use my slide out? There are advantages both ways. Neither option is the "wrong" answer. It's just a matter of what fits your needs and comfort levels best.

Hi Josh I'm looking at the 2024 Rockwood 282RD which does not allow bathroom access when the kitchen slide is in travel mode. I know the slide mechanism is rack and pinion and I have heard that this slide mechanism allows partial opening while rig is attached to vehicle so to allow quick access to stair and bathroom. Is that true? Recommended?
so funny - I literally just recorded that one yesterday and told the factory to consider travel access in models today on that model!
Rack and pinion does allow for partial opening. That's correct.

Hey Josh I really enjoyed the video, but I am wondering of the quality of the slide walls, I looking for an rv right now to replace the one that flooded, but I see a definite quality issue between that of a Cherokee travel trailer and say a Rockwood Signature, the Cherokee slide walls on the outside look flimsy and soft while that of the Rockwood is like a hard laminate. Could you elaborate on this a bit please.
Laminated Slide-end Walls look/feel solid. When you can fist-thump on something it makes you feel good. But there's no strength difference between a laminated and non-laminated slide end wall. Frankly, non-laminated slide end walls are lighter in weight and allow you to run wiring thru them for power outlets which is pretty sweet.
Did Open Range have a lot of cable slide problems? But Keystone did not? Thanks.
It wasn't just open range -- it was the Supplier of the Accu slide system. It affected a large number of MFGs. Open Range was one of many of them. SOME Keystone sub-brands suffered from the same issues, but there are different suppliers of cable slides. Not ALL of them had the same challenges. The reason this is so highly associated with "Open Range" was due to the fact that they used that accu-slide system almost exclusively at the time on their wide body models.
That was also resolved over a year ago & hasn't been an issue since.
Well what can l say but ( you did it again Josh ) l have been trying to find the answer to the question, What are the depths of fiftwheel slides l kept on getting answes like 101 or 96 inches like I was dumb or something. When l saw this video l told myself voila Josh is the smart guy on the internet on these matters and in the middle of the video l heard these magic words ( like the up to 36 inch slides ) l kid you not l felt so relieved and happy. If l could have hit the like button 50 times l would have. So thanks and thanks again so would this meana unit of 101 inches plus 2 times 36 inches facing each other would be 173 inches thus 14.41 feet?

Forest River builds *everything*. And really it's just a banner. Forget "Forest River" and look at each brand. Each brand is like a separate company
Any idea which bunkhouse brands have the deepest or longest superslides?(dinette and sofa)
This isn't something that specific to brand X or Y, but rather to specific floor plans. Typically Jayco tends to do well by offering both a true hide-a-bed or theater sofa + true U-Dinette which means an extra long slide, but they're certainly not the only ones.

Everyone seems to be afraid to say this is the best slide. I am stranded in KC because slide will not go out. New Thor class A. Swinntec slide. I am looking at Newmar and Tiffin.

I have an 07 keystone Raptor. After I bring my slides, they start to slowly work their way out. I can't seem to get a schematic from keystone. Could you give me an idea of what might be the culprit that's causing this? Then I could have a better chance of tracking it down. Right now, I don't have a clue. Thsnk you Josh.
I'm afraid I cannot assist with this one. Sounds like a failing slide system clutch.
Low dollar solution? Measure the distance between the slide flange and sidewall, cut a board to match, put something like a scrap of carpet on the ends so it's not rough wood contact, and make your own slide block bars.
Not ideal, but would be effective.
Good video. Answered a few questions I had. But how do they work? Like the cable driven slides? What pushes the slide out? I'm assuming the cables bring the slide in but how do they push it out?
I will say I don't fully understand the push/pull mechanic of a cable slide myself. I'm sure it's very simple and I've had it explained to me, but it just doesn't sink in and register with how my brain works.
But I also don't know the exact working details of the engine or transmission in the car I drive every day. It works. I know that much lol

It's probably just a horizontal version of the cable lift system in a pop-up. i redid one once and the system was ingenious but I couldn't explain it. There's probably a video somewhere on TH-cam that shows it.

Thanks for the overview. One thing that hangs me up is how slides I’ve seen still appear to be “rodent friendly”. I’m mostly referring to the heavier units, especially those slides above the axles. How do they keep mice from entering the underbelly with all those obvious holes required for slide mechanicals?

It should be noted there are fewer ways for Rodents to enter an RV than there are houses. The difference is you don't tend to leave a house unattended next to tall grasses the way many RVs are left. The noise you make inside a home naturally acts as some level of deterrent as well.
Bottom line is if a mouse wants to get into something, then it's going to get into something. I've seen instances of mice gnawing through literal concrete. Best you can do is fill your RV with various deterrents (easy enough to google search solutions).
Josh, I have one of those never heard of failures. My 2019 Bullet was fine, worked great, went in to my dealership for other work and on returning home and setting up the unit and extending the slide it made LOUD grinding and didnt go out well. I inspected the exterior I found sagging on one side of the cables.Called andreturned it to my dealer, and now what a run around. The dealership is saying I was at fault , and I need to pay the price. I'm having a hard time finding parts or How to fix it video's to walk me thru the repair. I bought a lemon, it's been one thing after another. Any suggestions to help me out?

A question for you friend, we bought a used 2005 Trail-Bay Travel-lite 5TH wheel, and the Glide-out has to be cranked in, I know it is underneath the rig? If you have a video showing this process, please give me a link?

No slide in particular will fare better in such conditions. You'll be fine with anything once set up.

The lack of expansive living space and private sleeping. In the same amount of room/weight/cost you can get a traditional side-living slide out and private bedroom MOST folks find preferable.

Based on your two recent posts it sounds like you were rushed out of that place as quickly as possible. You may contact asking for additional assistance as this is an extremely basic inquiry. I'm curious as to what else they didn't tell you.
In short: you push the button till it stops moving and you hear the motor groan a bit. As soon as the sound changes you stop.

Again it varies. Many XL heavy duty diesel pusher companies actually have their own proprietary slide systems.

Hey Uncle Josh, given how we've been talking about cold weather camping lately and all, I have to ask... What's your opinion on skirting and if it's a positive one, well... what are the best options for someone who want the most durable, best value and maybe the most economical single-use option?
If you’re going to camp thru the coldest seasons, then it’s a really good idea. I have seen some people use varieties that almost stick on like tape for single use, but I dislike how they can leave signatures on the RV
I would do some looking into them to see what style might work best for you
Are the Power Gear type made by Lippert? Mine has the motor inside the coach and there is a track bolted onto the bottom of the slide.
I actually do not know the supplier of that system. Apologies. That's something I'll have to look into.

Same thing they're using today. It's called a power gear system. Ideal for small/light/above-the-floor slides. Used often in motorhomes actually
Thank you for the informative video, Josh. For several years I have had my concerns about all the different slide mechanisms. You have answered many of my questions and I greatly appreciate how you explained pros and cons of each.
I have one question though. If a customer found the perfect structure and floorplan of a travel trailer but hypothetically didn’t like the stock slide mechanism, have you ever heard of a custom ordered trailer using a different slide technology? This may be a pain in the butt question because all mfgr’s have different policies. But if it was a given that a different system would work, is it conceivable that a factory would or could build it to order?
A simple sentence or two in reply would be greatly appreciated.

Fair question regarding ordering an RV with a different slide type, but that's 100% not available. That would COMPLETELY change things like wall/floor/frame engineering, wall cut/sizes, etc. It would literally need to be re-designed almost from the ground up.
The problem with the Schwintek is how difficult it is to replace a motor. Especially if the motor is close to a corner wall. Lippert needs to redesign to make this easier to service.
I do prefer stuff that's easier to work on

I can definitely say I have been looking at these recently and thought the cable slides looked stupid cheap. Too bad Keystone doesn't use Azdel. I'd love to hear how manufacturers argue against using Azdel. I love the Keystone Premier trailers, but no Azdel.....

I am using this on my property in south Florida, for a full time set up with slides out and they are large slides, and it will not be traveling.. Take the age and the full time set up, as a factor and to take the shaking out of it during walking and wind.. Should i used them for minor deflection and to stabilize the movement... Thank You

I'm not aware of a recurring event on MHC slides currently. Given the number we sell it stands to reason I'd have heard of a systemic issue. We've always been quite happy with Montana's engineering actually. May I ask what information you received to give you the impression of a challenge currently?

@@adrianabayari Note the dates -- that is historic. No such problem exists currently. The issue had nothing to do with Montana, but rather the slide out system provider. Open Range used the same supplier at the time and suffered the same issue. It was vendor related -- not MFG error.
The vendors changed specs and engineering on a slide system a LOT of companies used without sharing the details. The vendor's new design was flawed and caused a lot of issues for a lot of people. Thankfully, it's been resolved for 3-4 years.
