Very Thorough!… I'm enjoying mine, even though it's pitched as a beginners camera, I'm finding it is a godsend. Initially I got is for street photography, but I've tried it out in events with the EF adapter and it slays!… I left my 5D2 at home, shot just with the M50, and the quality is superb. It takes a bit of getting used to, using the EVF and not seeing the flash! which is a bit weird. On the Street, silent mode it actually silent, (once you find where it's hidden in the menu) and the autofocus is superfast. Sometimes, I've found the EVF takes a second or too to come up from sleep in eco mode, but the camera still fires and takes the picture irrespective which is great. Night images are clean, shot some with a 70-200 f2.8 with the EF adapter, I'm absolutely loving the vibrant colours, the weight and as a result, this camera. Only downside so far is the battery. Having said that, It's teaching me to pace myself with just one battery, particularly on the street. It's like having one role of film; you got to make every shot count. I'm considering getting rid of my 5D, 7D, and 70D's…
Dodi, I think the image quality is better than the 5d mk2. Having said that, I've decided to keep the 5D2, for events, as the battery life on it is way better than the M50. I'm learning that you really need an arsenal of cameras in order to get the best all round. M50 for street photography, 5D2 for events, 7D for wildlife and sports, and 70d for video… You can get all those bodies for around £1500. I'm still after a 6D2, as I love full frame, and the lens selection it offers. Prices on the 6D2 seem to keep falling as people slay it online. That's good for me, I'll probably trade-in one of my 70d's to get it, and my line-up will be complete.

No frills review, loved it. Learned even more about my M50! Hint: Slap on a Viltrox EOS M2 to transform this gem into nearly a full frame sensor, works brilliantly with my nifty fifty, and has brought new life to my first gen Tokina 11-16mm. I bought this camera for a small stills camera to go along with my A7RII.. i love using the M50 so much I sold my A7RII before it lost anymore value. I canon is coming out with a full frame mirrorless soon which I will buy. I love the color it produces in raw and the picture quality is excellent for a crop sensor. Focus and Tracking is good too. Eye focus works great too. I sometimes will have to upload pics to my phone instantly to send to IG or FB. The colors are spot on and none of my Sony’s could ever get color right straight out of camera. So I always had to play with them in raw on my computer just to send to social media. This’s M50 is a huge time saver for that. For 629 body only it is Canons best crop sensor body for taking pics.

Maarten Heilbron I am really into GX85 and the only factor here for me is the articulating screen. I no longer consider the E-PL9 due to its lack of viewfinder and the screen swivels downward which is not useable if in the tripod.
Maarten reviews each camera based on its own merits and doesn't do the whole fanboy thing where one brand is better than the other. He answers the questions I want to know with a pleasant personality and a little humor.
Where have you been? I have watched countless videos to choose a camera and then to get acquainted with my purchase. I am a new camera user and I would have enjoyed seeing this video back in December. I have searched for "Canon M50 review" many many times and this video never showed up. Today arbitrarily, here itvis. The algorythm is broken.
Great review. Love the part about Canon's baffling M Series naming system. In my opinion your review of the on screen menu system is the most helpful part of the review. I own the M 100 and I find navigating the menu screens challenging, if I'm not carrying the user guide. I hope you will review the M 6 II when it's released.
I had great trouble connecting my camera to my smartphone but your instructions, out of a number videos, was the one that worked for me so thank you very much ☺
Nice review. Touches everything, one thing most reviews missed was some close up shots , which is what i was looking for. This video had one, and the object looked sharp
One of the best video out there, outstanding job! Just one thing, at 6:16 if you want it to act as a light meter you need to half press the shutter and the indicator will show you how many stops you're under/over exposed

Want to tell you my experience with the M50: Handling was good and simple by touchscreen and fully tilting screen. Very nice! It´s the way to make it simple in use per se in general that was great. For me it was a sympathic camera - easy to use. "Plasticfeeling" was not so bad. Cropfactor in video - you know before. Dualautofocus was great. Only one big thing to complain: the sharpeness!!! A l l my pictures are looking a little bit unsharp/"squishy". Equal which aperture/time I used. Yes, it could be the lense. Other little problems: it always took a little bit to long to shoot a picture because of the delayed trigger/shutter reaction. Only one dialwheel - menue navigation by touch took often a little bit to much steps/time. So in conclusion I sent the M50 back.In my experience the sharpeness problem was to big. Feeling pity for that - because I liked the idea. It were a great travelcamera...so this is no critic of your video / only another personal rating.
Mr. Heilbron, I just want to thank you for your honest reviews on all these cameras, specially the M50. I have noticed Canon has a Marketing machine that owns a lot of these so called camera experts. Keep up your great reviews, sir!!!

Oh no, Mr. Heilbron, there is not relation what so ever. It is just an observation of my after leaning more about different cameras and watching different reviews, specially on Canons. I think Canons are great cameras yet I find most reviews in TH-cam a bit overlooking shortcomings of these Canon cameras. In all fairness as it is said, "there is no perfect camera" ...yet lets be objective and try to provide the whole picture.
The most technically in-depth review on youtube about the Canon M50! I will have to watch it a couple more times after I buy the M50. (80% convinced to purchase the M50) The only Question is for Vlogging is there any other camera in your mind that will compete with the M50? The 3 crucial points for me are:- 1) Autofocus 2) Flip Screen 3) External Mic input. Kudos & Thanks Maarten.
Just got a Macro manual focus lens for mine, works really nice. I had hell trying to find where you turn off "Allow shutter to operate w/o a lens. Finally found it under the wrench menu. I really like my M50.
I just bought m50, I am having 700d too. I went to canon lens registration tool to register my ef-s lenses to m50...And I was shocked to see that I can register only three lenses as compared to 40 lenses in 700d. No TH-cam reviewer is talking about this huge limitation

That was very thorough. Thank you. And nice to see the Distillery District, City Hall, and other T.O. landmarks (wish the weather would cool down, though). The M50 does seem to have a problem with 'rolling shutter', in the 4K mode.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Rolling shutter is fairly typical of cameras in this class - you'd have to be a demanding film maker to be bothered by it.

I just bought this camera replacing my Fujifilm XM1. And, I really enjoy shooting with it. My main reason to switch was the pricey (though optically better) lens lineup of Fujifilm. I never find a mirrorless wide angle lens as cheap as Canon EF-M 11-22mm (€330)!
Amazing video! Thank you for this informative explanation of these features. I haven't decided upon a camera yet; however, this has been extremely helpful with my research. I'm currently leaning between the Canon M50, SL2 or T7i.
I am still deciding between this M50 or the M6. M6 is cheaper,more compact but solid build, more button/dial. M50 is newer, digic 8, EVF,more focus points etc. 4K and articulating screens doesnt matter for me. The price difference is about 80$ Can you give opinion? Is the M50 worth the 80bucks?
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. In general, all mirrorless cameras have inferior battery performance to DSLRs, as they always have to light up one screen or another. The exception are Sony models that use the new Z battery, which have the best battery life of all.
If you use the 15-45mm kit lens at 15mm you can use the 4K with wider angle than the 22mm prime. I think Canon thinking that most users would probably use the included kit lens.
Thank you for your informative review. For my travels I use either a Canon 7D or Canon 70D, but the weight and size makes it impractical for me. I also use external mic frequently. For the past year I use mostly my Iphone 7+ which is great for sharing but the image/video quality is unmatched by what I get from DSLR cameras. I am not a professional photographer but I just need a camera that gives high quality images, easy to share, and most importantly, easy to carry around.
damn dude, most detailed video i have seen so far. just starting out and looking for a camera. not going to do over 700$ though, hope this one fits the bill
Since you posted this video, Sigma has released three awesome lenses that make this camera even better for TH-cam creators and vloggers. I'd love to see you do a video that covers these lenses, The 16mm f/1.4 ef-m, the 30mm f/1.4 ef-m, and the 56mm f/1.4 ef-m. I've got the 16mm f/1.4 and it's a real game changer!

Oh dear ... I'll start to include crops again. I'm just really not certain - particularly in a camera like this - that it matters to anyone. I'm providing the benefit of the doubt, as I imagine it's done to make a better match of sensor pixels to the 4K resolution to reduce artifacts. I also overlooked that 4K is only available in movie mode - that was a more significant factor in my mind - I just didn't want to get bogged in trivial details.
@@ludacrisleon828 When we refer to a crop for video, it is not generally the change in aspect ratio that's being discussed, it's the use of less the the full width of the sensor.

Another very enjoyable video. This leaves me with an extra choice as a future vlogging camera. An APS-C sensor and dual-pixel AF does make a good combination. (NB From what I can gather when viewing other TH-camr's reviews, dual-pixel AF does NOT work in 4K, only in 1080P. This is a frustrating letdown on Canon's part). But beyond this, a good review of an interesting camera. But if I do decide to buy a Canon M50, I will purchase an extra battery (or two) and an extra battery charger.
That’s a nice little canera. It’d be great for B roll, imo. (Or A roll, why not?) I must also say your scarf is rather exquisite. I couldn’t pull it off, personally, but you rock it.

Thanks for your kind words. I was trying to test the tracking, but could not get it to lock on - in the video you see one of about a dozen attempts with varying approaches. I even tried stopping the train, locking on and then restarting it.
Choose any of those, they will provide very good results and are equally capable. I would discount the M50 because of the lens selection, but otherwise select based on your wallet, how it feels in your hand, and how much you love the design and brand.
Well your presentation is awesome you're like the best when it comes to cameras on TH-cam when it comes to cameras you're a serious contender thank you so much the M50 seems like I would understand the format better the way they have it set up in the camera then the G7 I'm not sure but let me know between the two cameras what you like better thank you for sharing this video
Thanks for the kind words. I think that both could be good choices, it would depend on what you plan to do. The Canon's advantage is the larger sensor, it's disadvantage is the quality and availability of native lenses.

The D5600 won't be much smaller and lighter. The M50 is limited by lens availability. I would choose the X-T30, I'm just finishing my review and find it to be outstanding on a number of issues.
I thought it was a great review, appreciate it. I also think you have a really pleasant voice, which is not always the case on TH-cam. I read in another comment that you use a Sony a6300. While the canon is cheaper and might not be a great comparison, what do you think of the m50 as an alternative to Sony?

I think the Canon M50 is a reasonable alternative, however, the Sony is a little more feature rich for video.There's also a larger selection of native e-mount lenses. For better lenses you'll end up with Canon's adapter and (mostly) larger EOS lenses.
I don’t know. What would the beginner like to do with a camera? Is weight an issue? Does the beginner understand or care about the difference between mirrorless and DSLR?

would the M50 be an upgrade if i already have and EM5ii with 12-40 2.8 and 35-100 2.8. im looking to upgrade because i want a camera with better dynamic range and lower noise at higher ISO. or would you suggest to get a Fuji ? thank you, i love your videos
I guess ... what is there about the M50 that you find more appealing? The larger sensor might give a little better performance at higher ISOs, but you might be disappointed. A full frame sensor like the A7 III might be better, but.
@@MaartenHeilbron i like the M50 because of the Canon colors Jpeg and the dual pixel AF. The Cankn EF-M lenses are smaller than the M43 now. I get noise on my olympus em5ii on ISO over 800 specially in thr blacks. I would go fuji also but the lenses are too expensive and their zooms are big.

@@MaartenHeilbron the issue with the G7xmkii is Manual focus, the ring is un predictable, annoying and flimsy...is this the same with the m50?

One of the best video out there, outstanding job! Just one thing, at 6:16 if you want it to act as a light meter you need to half press the shutter and the indicator will show you how many stops you're under/over exposed

Here in South Africa there's a three-month backlog on M50s, they sell out as soon as they arrive. I can't wait to get mine.
Yes, I understand it's a very popular model - we saw a lot of photographers with it on our last trip.
Want to tell you my experience with the M50: Handling was good and simple by touchscreen and fully tilting screen. Very nice! It´s the way to make it simple in use per se in general that was great. For me it was a sympathic camera - easy to use. "Plasticfeeling" was not so bad. Cropfactor in video - you know before. Dualautofocus was great. Only one big thing to complain: the sharpeness!!! A l l my pictures are looking a little bit unsharp/"squishy". Equal which aperture/time I used. Yes, it could be the lense. Other little problems: it always took a little bit to long to shoot a picture because of the delayed trigger/shutter reaction. Only one dialwheel - menue navigation by touch took often a little bit to much steps/time. So in conclusion I sent the M50 back.In my experience the sharpeness problem was to big. Feeling pity for that - because I liked the idea. It were a great travelcamera...so this is no critic of your video / only another personal rating.

Oh no, Mr. Heilbron, there is not relation what so ever. It is just an observation of my after leaning more about different cameras and watching different reviews, specially on Canons. I think Canons are great cameras yet I find most reviews in TH-cam a bit overlooking shortcomings of these Canon cameras. In all fairness as it is said, "there is no perfect camera" ...yet lets be objective and try to provide the whole picture.

Just got a Macro manual focus lens for mine, works really nice. I had hell trying to find where you turn off "Allow shutter to operate w/o a lens. Finally found it under the wrench menu. I really like my M50.
On most cameras that setting is not where you expect it to be.

I just bought m50, I am having 700d too. I went to canon lens registration tool to register my ef-s lenses to m50...And I was shocked to see that I can register only three lenses as compared to 40 lenses in 700d. No TH-cam reviewer is talking about this huge limitation

The M50 does seem to have a problem with 'rolling shutter', in the 4K mode.

I just bought this camera replacing my Fujifilm XM1. And, I really enjoy shooting with it. My main reason to switch was the pricey (though optically better) lens lineup of Fujifilm. I never find a mirrorless wide angle lens as cheap as Canon EF-M 11-22mm (€330)!
If cost is your criteria, then I'm glad you've found what you're looking for.

M6 is cheaper,more compact but solid build, more button/dial.
M50 is newer, digic 8, EVF,more focus points etc.
4K and articulating screens doesnt matter for me.
The price difference is about 80$
Can you give opinion? Is the M50 worth the 80bucks?
That is a tough decision - Canon has made these cameras too similar.

A good review clearly explained. How is the battery performance compared to DSLR cameras. Advisable to buy?
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. In general, all mirrorless cameras have inferior battery performance to DSLRs, as they always have to light up one screen or another. The exception are Sony models that use the new Z battery, which have the best battery life of all.

If you use the 15-45mm kit lens at 15mm you can use the 4K with wider angle than the 22mm prime. I think Canon thinking that most users would probably use the included kit lens.

Thank you for your informative review. For my travels I use either a Canon 7D or Canon 70D, but the weight and size makes it impractical for me. I also use external mic frequently. For the past year I use mostly my Iphone 7+ which is great for sharing but the image/video quality is unmatched by what I get from DSLR cameras. I am not a professional photographer but I just need a camera that gives high quality images, easy to share, and most importantly, easy to carry around.

I'd love to see you do a video that covers these lenses, The 16mm f/1.4 ef-m, the 30mm f/1.4 ef-m, and the 56mm f/1.4 ef-m. I've got the 16mm f/1.4 and it's a real game changer!

Oh dear ... I'll start to include crops again. I'm just really not certain - particularly in a camera like this - that it matters to anyone. I'm providing the benefit of the doubt, as I imagine it's done to make a better match of sensor pixels to the 4K resolution to reduce artifacts. I also overlooked that 4K is only available in movie mode - that was a more significant factor in my mind - I just didn't want to get bogged in trivial details.
@@MaartenHeilbron you mentdoesmethatnit shoots 4K at 16:9. Since the sensor is 3:2 that means it crops. Clear as day
@@ludacrisleon828 When we refer to a crop for video, it is not generally the change in aspect ratio that's being discussed, it's the use of less the the full width of the sensor.

Another very enjoyable video. This leaves me with an extra choice as a future vlogging camera.
An APS-C sensor and dual-pixel AF does make a good combination. (NB From what I can gather when viewing other TH-camr's reviews, dual-pixel AF does NOT work in 4K, only in 1080P. This is a frustrating letdown on Canon's part).
But beyond this, a good review of an interesting camera. But if I do decide to buy a Canon M50, I will purchase an extra battery (or two) and an extra battery charger.

Thanks for your kind words. I was trying to test the tracking, but could not get it to lock on - in the video you see one of about a dozen attempts with varying approaches. I even tried stopping the train, locking on and then restarting it.

Choose any of those, they will provide very good results and are equally capable. I would discount the M50 because of the lens selection, but otherwise select based on your wallet, how it feels in your hand, and how much you love the design and brand.
Could you confirm that m50 allows you to adjust exposure compensation when you are in Manual mode with Auto ISO enabled...?

The D5600 won't be much smaller and lighter. The M50 is limited by lens availability. I would choose the X-T30, I'm just finishing my review and find it to be outstanding on a number of issues.

While the canon is cheaper and might not be a great comparison, what do you think of the m50 as an alternative to Sony?
I appreciate your kind words, thanks. I shoot (video mostly) with the Fuji X-T2 and Sony A6300. I think the Canon M50 is a reasonable alternative, however, the Sony is a little more feature rich for video.There's also a larger selection of native e-mount lenses. For better lenses you'll end up with Canon's adapter and (mostly) larger EOS lenses.

I don’t know. What would the beginner like to do with a camera? Is weight an issue? Does the beginner understand or care about the difference between mirrorless and DSLR?

I guess ... what is there about the M50 that you find more appealing? The larger sensor might give a little better performance at higher ISOs, but you might be disappointed. A full frame sensor like the A7 III might be better, but.
@@MaartenHeilbron i like the M50 because of the Canon colors Jpeg and the dual pixel AF. The Cankn EF-M lenses are smaller than the M43 now. I get noise on my olympus em5ii on ISO over 800 specially in thr blacks. I would go fuji also but the lenses are too expensive and their zooms are big.
