this was my first large diaphragm condenser mic I ever purchased. I've used it for years and understand the cardioid sound of it. Definitely one of the best microphones in it price point. If your just starting off in the audio world without a lot of a budget to start - this mic with give you the most bang for your buck.

Firstly, a good review and summing up. You covered virtually everything a potential buyer might wish to know.
I have owned a B2 Pro for over 15 years now and have to say that, at the price point, it’s hard to fault it. For those starting out in audio and on a budget, versatility might be the name of the game and your video certainly makes that point. It is a good ‘all rounder’ and learning tool.
The supplied windscreen works nicely to round of Sibilance for podcasts and the Figure of eight and Omni polar patterns really do increase it’s usefulness in this field, especially for round table and two way discussions but a pop shield rather than a windscreen is a must for singers in order to get the most out of this microphones sensitivity. Experimenting with proximity and placement also helps with any mic and there are a lot of useful switches to play with on this one. BTW...In case you are new to switchable polar patterns on a microphone, always turn the volume/gain down whilst switching between patterns to avoid popping noises.

FYI, the U87 has built in resisters to take care of that high end issue otherwise it would sound exactly the same. With a little digi eq you can truly clone the 87 to the point of flipping between mics without hearing the changeover.

I requested this mic review some 3 years ago XD... I've been using 2 of them since 2011, haven't had any complaints except the self noise and the fact that you need a good pop filter. Anyway Great review, keep doing what you're doing.

Great review. Sounds like a good instrument mic. This could work on a grand piano. The 10k boost would catch high partials helping the tiny treble strings offset the 9' long bass strings.

  • @MrHamit64

I like it. But then again remember I like brite condencers. It almost seems to be Rode NT1-A bright. Pluss the fact that it has all 3 pattterns gives you the option of all techniques of Stereo. Even Mid Side. Set 1 to figure 8 and the other to cardioid..

In response to a comment below...
I've had this mic for nearly 2 years now and still love it. I play an electric guitar clean through a Mustang amp that goes on XLR to a mixer and sing through the B2 pro into a TC Electronics Harmony XT. I mostly play 70s and 80s stuff like Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, James Taylor, America, Niel Young, etc... Although it's very true that it accentuates mouth noises, try to keep in mind also that it accentuates everything else like say deep rich lows and usually unheard mids. Basically it's crystal clear. For me it's perfect. Although I'm a male try to think of Diana krull (sp?) and her beautifully breathy vocals. Or for a male maybe Tony Bennit (sp?). If your looking for intimacy and you don't scream into it, it's narly as good as you can get at any price range. And as far as I know that's the only way to get that beautiful breathy tone that's completely full and natural...through a very transparent condenser mic. But sure, if you swollow or say smack your lips it will also catch that. Just like every other good tool on the planet though, you need to get a feel for it and then you get used to it. Not a bad thing in my book. As a matter of fact I would say that this sounds like a Neumann u-87 only more clear! Blasphemy I know, trust me, but it's my honest opinion. And no, it's not as smooth, warm or evenly balanced as the U87, but it is unapologetically CRYSTAL CLEAR. As some have said, to a fault! But really, you can definitely manage that with either a screen mesh filter or the provided slip over cushion cover. I use the slip over cushon filter that's provided most of the time to eliminate the high-end and it's just perfect for me. But sometimes I just go with a screen or even both depending on the application. And yea, most people don't like this level of transparency, but if you're looking to sing say softer and catch the fullness of your voice in its entirety you absolutely can't go wrong or buy anything cheaper that will even come close to this as far as I know. And if it does exist, please, let me know LOL But yea, I understand this is not for most. But if you need intamacy, look no further.

@Podcastage just about all home studio condensers have the same annoying issues even though some have it even more than others (bright, raspy, thin, sibilant) but you can actually get this mic modded by this guy named John Bonell. He does really good mod work. I had my Rode NT2-A modded by him and it is easily the best condenser mic I have now. It used to be bright and raspy and sibilant but he fixed all of those issues and the mic now sounds fuller and overall better in general. Check out his site. The mod for the b2 is $250 but it turns your mic into a beast that sounds like it's $1500. I plan on getting this mic and doing that myself. I was skeptical about this at first but you have my word that this guy means business. He modded my rode mic and my pre amp and they both are awesome now when they use to be junk. You make the choice, my friend. Thanks for the great reviews though! Heres John's site if you are interested.

You can replace the capacitor responsible for the high frequency de-emphasis with a higher value and it'll make the mic flatter sounding, because that's the big issue with these Chinese U87 style mics. The capsules aren't bad but the circuit isn't a good fit for a K67 capsule due to a lack of high frequency attenuation (in mics like this and the MXL V67G, 2001, and similar mics there's not much attenuation due to the cheap capacitors).

    • @EdRopple
      @EdRopple 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Agreed, with the caveat that it's a lot of work for not a ton of value. I've done a re-cap (and re-capsule) job on a couple of V67Gs, mostly because one of my friends really likes how they look, but the amount of work involved was pretty silly given that it was a cheap mic to start with. Fun project, but for the time it took I could've just gotten a better mic.

I’m trying to set up my own home studio and bought this mic a few years ago and debating whether I should be buying an alternative mic or not. I’m using the focusrite Scarlett solo 3rd gen interface and GarageBand as my software. I’m having a huge problem with white noise, I can hear in this video that you don’t have any white noise at all in the background, I’m wondering how you set this up and if this is just what the microphone is like and you need to make alterations or whether or not it’s something else?

The review I've been waiting for from bandrew! I own the older version and love this mic. Now let's hear bandrew's take on it. (I'm commenting before watching)
    After watching:
A great and detailed review as always. I can vouch for everything he says about the mic. It's very clear, very sensitive, and overly bright. If you don't use the provided windscreen you'll have problems with overly bright and sibilant recordings. And dear lord mouth noises, they are the bane of my life with recording spoken word with this mic. The older ones (in a sky blue packaging) use a different and better capsule (word is they are leftover capsules from rode's Chinese factory when they left for Australia) and an m-audio board design. If you can have them modified (they change a couple of capacitors with higher quality ones) the self noise will drop drastically and the voice becomes flatter. The mod can cost you as much as the mic mind you.
Since I've been using this mic for over a year I thought I share my experience and knowledge on it.

    • @dylanj8676

The older ones were made by 797 Audio. They used the circuit and capsule they used for the Rode NT2. 797 also made the older Studio Projects mics, as well as some of the better MXL mics.
The current B2 Pro might use the same capsule, I'm not sure. Either way it's a decent capsule in the wrong circuit.

I can understand why he's moving away from those, though. Hair-splitting about budget mics is probably not the best use of anybody's time--there's only so many ways a budget microphone manufacturer can tweak simple/low-end microphones. Anything by a reputable manufacturer in the upper half of that range--MXL 770 or AT2020 for condensers or pick any of the $99 stick mic segment (sE's my favorite but a lot of that is how it feels)--is going to be fine.

    B2 PRO or Rode NT1-A

Kiko TV Easy, Rode Nt1-A, self noise just exceptional.., B-2 is kind of noisy. But if you're thinking of Nt1-A spend a little more for the NT1.., has also very low self noise and a flatter response.

I've been using this mic for several years. I liked it as my first condenser mic. But as time goes on I've noticed some things that have really turned me off. The sensitivity to mouth noises drives me crazy!!! It seems to pick up even the smallest wet clicking noises from speaking. I like to get right up on top of the microphone and it almost makes this mic unusable. Be warned if you want to buy this mic, that it is a major problem. Check out any of my videos and you'll see what I mean.

B-1 sounds better than this one too. B-1 in my ever so humble opinion is a great mic and has been around for years and has never priced dropped in all that time. In other words the B-1 is stand out in the 100 price range Large D mics.

@Stefano Pavone Necessary? Depends on what you need. I like having the option to switch because vocals and instruments record differently and its nice to have the option to record different sounds by switching the pattern. I prefer the B-1 overall.

This guy sounds like a broken record from other reviews. If you aren't a Neumann then I'm going to bash you. He aways lacks the ability to put things in perspective with price in mind. You're not telling anyone anything we don't already know. I know let's all go out and buy a Neumann U87 so we can stop this unnecessary video...

I've had this mic for nearly 2 years now and still love it. As some have said, to a fault. But really, you can definitely manage that with either a screen mesh filter or the provided slip over cushion cover. I use the slip over cushon filter that's provided most of the time to eliminate the high-end and it's just perfect for me. But sometimes I just go with a screen or even both depending in the application. And yea, most people don't like this level of clarity, but if you're looking to sing say softer and catch the fullness of your voice in its entirety you absolutely can't go wrong or buy anything cheaper that will even come close to this as far as I know. And if it does exist please let me know LOL But yea, I understand this is not for most. But if you need intamacy, look no further.
