+Stefan Nilsson Space planes are HARD. If I can build one that can get to orbit it doesn't have enough fuel left to get anywhere. Sometimes it's stuck up there. I did manage once to bring a stranded fuel-less pod with two clamped reentry craft. It was pretty hard.
+NFITC1 ive made 7 sstos with 1.05 but all with 1/4 fuel left after orbit so i gave up

Bring enough oxidizer to kick yourself by about 700m/s after accelerating to 1100m/s on air breathing mode
Balance the craft so that it is stable when empty and full (this can be tricky)
If you fail don't give up, trial and error is a very good way to learn

This is very nicely done! I've been trying to do a Moho SSTO for a while now but I've been thinking too big and over-engineering my crafts (again!). This must have taken quite a lot of patience :P
Yes everything involving ion means patience , I tried to make a Moho SSTO without ion but it just wasnt possible .

+Turbo Pumped wow guys, I can't even do a SSTO properly without either getting stuck in orbit right after achieving it or, usually, running out of oxidizer on my way into orbit, usually leading to more and more complicated builds that are less and less cpapable of even reaching the necessary hight to gain orbital speed XD

I have been thinking long and hard about it, and i got a 20 ton Tylo SSTO in my hangar, but it will have to use mining.

Interesting ! I have also thought of something similar as an alternative to mining, but with the ship itself being able to split in two and with the part with the nuclear engine serving as a lander. Then it can re-assemble itself when the nuke part returns from Tylo .
+Turbo Pumped Andrew Hanson did a SSTO to Tylo (but with a separate lander). It's also theoretically possible to go to Tylo surface and back w/o using only NTR- so yes, Tylo SSTO is possible. Albeit, it would be pretty big, and use ION, but still possible.

That was amazing. I can't wrap my brain yet around gravity assists.
I only just launched 1st satellite for Duna, a contract, I have to deploy it in specific orbit. In about a year, when Duna is in proper position, I will launch 1st manned mission to Duna, a gigantic ship, with an orbital laboratory, a science hopper for gathering science, a small Sat for mapping the terrain, two return vehicles - one for several passengers and a small one for the science crew (in case of emergencies) and orbital facilities for 10 kerbals or so. I plan to take a pilot, an engineer and at least 6 -8 scientists, to rank them up.
Once at Duna, everyone will have a chance to land and plant a flag, so they get extra XP. If the ship won;t be too complicated, I will also add a base that will land, part of a contract I have.
Still your minimalist approach is charming. How long it took you to test the vehicle, it seemed very balanced and robust.

You tried to match Moho's inclination when launching into orbit. Wouldn't it have been more efficient to start on an equatorial orbit and then change the plane on the last (high eccentricity) orbit at apoapsis ? Just wondering, you seem to have optimized your journey pretty nicely :-)
Good point. I thought of that too, but only after i saw how slow my speed at the top of the orbit was .
Both methods needs very little delta V though , but your suggestion is easier to do, so I will go for that next time.

Practice and a background in maths and physics which helps a lot in this game .
All my missions and crafts are 100 % stock so no mods.

1. Why did you use a nuclear engine? It is really heavy and not really fit for a small plane like this. I'd use a LV-909 and switch a bit of that liquid fuel for oxidizer.
2. You could have used an Eve gravity assist on your way to Moho to match the inclination and encounter Moho at a lower relative velocity (Eve to Moho rather than Kerbin to Moho). You would also lower the fuel cost of the Kerbin escape burn.

What if you got rid of that massive NERV and used regular rocket fuel to get into orbit? It would be less efficcient, but given the mass of the NERV, the craft would then weigh little enough for the ion engines to give it a lot more delta-v. Just a suggestion. Plus, you could get rid of that massive reaction wheel now that there's a single engine aligned with the center of mass.
Single engine? getting rid of the nerv and the rapier? you wont even get into orbit with a regular rocket engine.
No. Use the Rapier alone to get into orbit. Then use the ion engines for everything else. Just a friendly suggestion. ; )

rapier's isp is 305 while the nerv is 800. your setup/idea saves indeed a lot of mass and complexity but I get o think that if he did it that way, it's not for the added difficulty ;). he really needed the extra Dv.

I like to define myself as a good player. i built SSTOs that can go basically anywhere... but this? THIS? i just threw my hands up in the air when you landed back at the runway and screamed " YEAH SURE".
Just started to build SSTO's. I managed it only till my space station and back, so I watch shitloads of these videos, but this was fuckin epic Sir. Hands down :D Oh btw I made a copy of your bird and couldn't even take off due to low TWR, how do you lift 19.t with 1 Rapier?

+Octillerysnacker A small burn several hours in advance can adjust the intercept time for when KSC is in the right place. With that, and lots of F9, I can do it... 25% of the time.
Usually what I do is aerobrake down to a near circular orbit, the number of passes is determined by where the KSC is (i.e. more passes if it's in darkness, maybe 2 passes if its already on the light side)
I managed to get from Duna to the SPH's doorstep without any burns after entering Kerbin's SOI.

The ISP of ion engines is unreal. It just takes patience :) I wish they'd add a stock ability to refill Xenon. For some reason I simply must play stock...

I think some Ion efficiency was lost due to angling the engines.How did you stack up the rapier and nerv and still had balanced thrust ? wouldn't the rapier flip the ship at max thrust ?
I think it's awesome that one day in the future, people may have to plan out their own interplanetary flights, using gravity assists and such high precision burns as to use an atmospheric breaking as an essential part of the flight plan is pretty radical. I mean we're already pretty close with allot of the gravity assists of the probes we've sent to other planets in the solar system but imagine doing a Martian airbreak on your way to one of its moons... To be fair, we'd probably find it easier to set up a fueling station on the surface and just re-launch from there. But still amazing job, must've taken allot of persistence.

I see two fuel tanks clipped inside of eachother... kinda cheaty going for "small" craft.
from Kerbin LKO you should only make 1 (or with ion a series of burns) burn that gives you a encounter, then only 1 burn for your decelerating into orbit around the target, do not burn into orbit around the sun first before making nodes for a encounter, your are more fuel efficient while you are inside Kerbins gravity (SOI)
And here I am, still haven't built an SSTO. (that has enough fuel to de-orbit, anyway)
