The scene where Peter comes back and Green Goblin immediately knows it's him is one of my favorite scenes in all of comics, it proves that Gobby is his arch enemy
He didn’t kill Barbara to be fair and Jason came back so while it’s bad, like really bad, it’s not quite on the same level. Batman and the Joker also didn’t have a personal relationship, and were enemies from the get go. Also the Joker was actually evil where as Norman was purely insane in the early days having a Banner/Hulk relationship with the Goblin. This makes it a bit less emotionally complicated for Bruce than it is for Peter.
Barbara and Jason were heroes, his sidekicks. They knew the risks and who they were going rooftop to rooftop with from the jump. Spidey’s people? All civilians. Completely unprepared. @@yosefcitron5253 Agreed, the joker has done worse stuff in general, however, most of this wasn’t personal. It’s just the Joker being a sick POS. The Goblin’s entire mission is to torment Peter. The Joker wants to “play” with Batman, and if possible, get him on his side, the Green Goblin pretty much just wants to emotionally torment Peter for no greater purpose than he hates him. Seriously Norman is on almost Eobard Thawn levels of hate.
Nah GG is to Marvel what Joker is to DC, but Doc Ock is to Spider-Man as Joker is to batman. A pure ideological opposite, someone whose mere existence shows the cracks in the Spider-Man's beliefs
Kingpin as a Spider-man villain is something I always love. But I'm personally more with the idea of him being the Thanos of street level heroes. Every street level hero is gonna have to go up against him one way or another. Hence I always feel his potential is not explored as much as it could when he's focused on defeating a single hero. Just my opinion on it ofcourse.
I dont understand ock thats why I dont really connect with him like why is he evil again? I know some interpretations the arms control him or his brain gets fried but i just dont get it
I think Lizard is INCREDIBLY underrated and deserves to be in the discussion for at least the top four. Not only is he by far one of spidey's strongest opponents outside of the symbiote bros, but he's also got that personal connection with Curt Connors being his friend, making him more of a tragic character. Such a shame he's been in nothing good recently, to the point that nobody really cares about him anymore, which is a bigger tragedy than Curt Conner's predicament.
Lizard is just not as versatile as other spidey villains, like his arc always end with him cured and some kind of trauma from the stuff he did while transformed so if he gets overused he can become stale really quick
@JH0207 that's something you can say for a lot of other great villains like Mr Freeze, Harley Quinn, and possibly even Venom. Like some of those villains, I think there's still room for potential growth if the writers would just stick to something like how he could overall evolve or mutate to be more sentient and be a potential ally, but other potential consequences could derive from that. Also, because he's been pretty underutilized in media recently, the chances of him becoming stale quick is lower since they'd rather use other villains instead.
@@AwesomeMooseSmile When I was writing the original comment, I was initially gonna draw a comparison to Mr. Freeze and Bane specifically. I feel both of those guys have been victims of having one character defining story and writers don’t really know what to do with them after. I honestly think Lizard should get killed off or shelved for a long time but in a super tragic way. Maybe the mutation completely takes over and we watch as Curt gradually loses what little humanity he has left and he goes full animal (potentially kills a bunch of people) so he has to get locked up for a while in like a cage at the raft and if the writers wanna start using him again they can explore the guilt Curt is punished with in like a super tragic one shot. Or they could make him an anti hero hulk like figure who has some venom adjacent lethality, which could put him at odds with other NYC heroes
@@JH0207I kinda feel like SHED abd the following story is pretty much the story you're describing. Kurt lizard off goes off the deep end and Kills his son, then evolves into a much more powerful form that cannot just control reptiles but make regular humans act on their base animalistic impulses. Spidermans fairly outmatched and can't properly cure him but actually males the lizard ego start to feel shame for killing Connors kid and he retreats into obscurity. It's a really awesome story not just because of how much of an imposing threat lizard's become, but it also forces spiderman and the reader to face this question about the nature of people and what we'e capable of. It makes the lizard ego more than this condition Connors is afflicted with, but this sentient personification of atavism. Though in any case, perhaps they continued using the lizard in stories far too soon after that one? I don't think it's as perilous of a writing matter as it've been made to be. So long as the Lizard persona if left smart enough ti make a diverse set of schemes, and Isn't be able to be turned back into Connors in the convenience of an issue I think there's plenty of potential of confronting him in fights and in moral dihlemas.
My favorite is Herman Schultz. After building vibrational blast gauntlets with scraps in a prison workshop, you'd think he'd become some dark parallel to Iron Man but... no. He's just the Shocker. He's pragmatic to a fault--he just wants money, not vengeance or world domination. But, because he has no real aspirations beyond robbing banks, his tech has limits and he never pushes himself. He's a loser but he's not a maniac, and I like those sort of 9-to-5 professional types (Taskmaster is another villain I love, and Flash's Rogues)
Don’t forget the time he outright beat venom in a fight, was getting away with the money excitedly yelling about opening a cat sanctuary, and then he was hit by a car.
@@fromthethirdplanet Yeah but to be honest, he's quite a hard character to do live action I think. There are ways to do him - like the comic where he blacked out New York to make a message in the lights for people to see - but as soon as he appears, he's wearing quilts. He'd look goofy. And if they tech him up too much, like Rhino in ASM2, then he's no longer Shocker. 🤷♂️ The MCU got away with it just but he wouldn't have enough main event status in that form to be a major player. Shame though as I'd love to hear Spidey tell him he can't escape him. 😇
@@JeremiahEcks777 yeah you are right (you have a fantastic profile by the way), the quilt would look a bit weird in life action (knowing Marvel they’d probably CGI it). I’m just a bit sad that they butchered two of my favorite comic book characters (Shocker and Montana/ Montana Shocker) in one movie.
My favorite personally has always been shocker not because of the memes but because he's just normal dude and he legit puts spiderman on the back foot pretty consistently
For me it’s Doc Ock, he’s just always felt like Peter’s equal and biggest intellectual rival. In the same breath though Green Goblin is his most intimate and ruthless villain. It’s like with Doc Ock it’s a professional beef but with Green Goblin it’s an unhealthy obsession, like his inner demons manifested.
@@Fanimati0n I agree, but at the same time Octavius also makes sense for Peter as well. He’s essentially what would happen if Peter decided to abuse his gifts for his own ego. But I entirely agree with what you’re saying.
Short answer: Venom: Arch Rival (Similar to Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy) Dr Octopus: Arch Nemesis (Peter's opposite in a scientific genius with powers also based on an animal with 8 appendages) Green Goblin: Arch Enemy (Norman Osborn is the greatest enemy to Peter Parker and has caused more personal trauma to him than any other villain. Their battles are always personal.) Also, I'm going to add this: Green Goblin was the first villain to discover Spider-Man's secret identity. That was long before Gwen's death and I personally think that should count as the first thing he has done to Peter.
I was watching 2002 Spider-Man last night and the line from the green goblin on the bridge made me realize that Norman really is his arch enemy. "Spider-Man, this is why only fools are heroes. Because you never know when some lunatic will come along with a sadistic choice. Let die the woman you love, or suffer the innocent children." Then he immediately follows up with the line " We are who we choose to be. " And he just chooses to be the sadistic psychopath.
I still think of the Lego superheroes Venom transformation animation almost everyday. Just him freaking out and ripping himself in half just for a massive version to emerge is so awesome.
Rhino has always been my favourite Spider-Man villain visually and narratively. A true antithesis of Spider-Man’s brain with overwhelming brawn. Rhino also strongly represents the tragic nature of many Spider-Man’s villains, where great power does not manifest into great responsibility. Rhino is also super nostalgic for me as he was the first villain I ever saw Spiderman face off against in the 1960’s tv run that played on my retro tv channel. Edit: Honestly though spidey’s got one of the best rogues galleries of all time. He’s got a bunch of phenomenal villains.
Him and Batman both have the best rogues galleries in their respective brands. It's a big part of why they're the two most popular heroes. A hero is only as good as his villain, afterall.
As a Venom fan it's still so funny to me that alot of spider-man fans think Venom is spider-man's nemesis even though he really doesn't do anything significant to peter like even a character like kraven who with last hunt affected Peter's life more . To me the reason i love Venom ( eddie brock) is because deep down he is a pathetic loser who blames others for his own faults but slowly over the years he realises that he is a kinda fucked up and tries to improve everyday , he is pretty complex character and its sad that alot of adaptations just don't explore that besides 90s show and even just doesn't put eddie in his own story
I agree with you. When they mentioned that villains are often dark reflections of their heroes during the venom segment, I thought they were going to say that he was like if Peter never learned to take responsibility for his actions from Uncle Ben.
Eddie Brock is the only real Venom. I didn’t buy the Spider-Man 2 game cause they went with Harry’s Venom which is a lame version. Brock embodies the best Venom and is the one that actually gives depth to the character instead of the other hosts who bond with the symbiote accidentally just for it to throw them out and discard them to eventually go back to Brock who is its perfect match aside from Spider-Man himself.
I ask this without humor and with true sincerity, I want a comic panel with She-Hulk clutching Spider-Man and fending off editorial pencils ✏️. “Leave him alone!”
Well now that you mention it, Hulk and bruce have been having their own tough time lately...arguably a lot worse than what spidermans been going through actually!
In venom's defense, his deep relationship with spiderman and peter ads some points, he is even undetectable by spider-sense. In kinpin's defense, he killed aunt May in civil war and Peter beating the shit out of him is very cool and iconic.
Alot of people considered The Death of Gwen as the End of the Silver Age and not necessarily the Bronze age. However, it will always stand as a great and tragic moment in comics. Damn Norman! Also Norm being behind the clone saga was bogus. Even the original( when getting fired) writer urged the staff to not blame Norman...which Marvel blamed anyway. Damn exec's...
I agree with that Superior Spider-Man take..... That story is literally my FAVORITE Spider-Man story... And I'm from the old school...... Liked and subscribed....👍🇹🇹
18:06 I'm fairly confident that once Pete gets back into his body after Doc, he jokes about Goblin's "Man purse" and he INSTANTLY knows Peter's back. That's next level hate.
I actually have a good idea I think the comic lads could pull off nicely: What would we do if we ran Sony? This is a list of projects I’d consider doing: 1)Spectacular Spider-Man season 3-4 2) Spiderman 2099 Movie 3)Venom Vs. Spiderman with AG 4)Animated Peter Parker Series (older man with daughter) 5)Animated Spider-Gwen(from spiderverse) spin off movie
@@comiclads def a fair answer. I think I’d be nervous to give the rights over to Marvel knowing that Disney would own them. I’d have to give it a shot at a few spidey movies to see if any of them have potential
This is why I consider Spidey's rogue gallery slightly better than Batman's. Batman's #1 villain is Joker, but you can argue Spidey's #1 villain is either Green Goblin, Venom or Dr Octapus.
Green Goblin will always be my favorite Spidey nemesis because... I freaking love goblins. So I'm very partial but inbetween classic issue, Dafoe performance and Ultimate Green Goblin who I thought was lame until I read the comics to discover a terrifying Villain... GG is kind of legit. Spectacular Spider-Man Goblin was to me the only one who really managed to find a sweet spot where his design feel not too ridiculous. It's hard to pin down his character inbetween personnality disorder or master manipulator the line got blurred but it kind of add to the mystique. Problem is that it's very hard to make the "whodunit" aspect of this character that was one of his original appeal nowadays, Spectacular is the only medium where they really got mileage out of this mistery appart from the comics. It's kind of lame they have done the goblin storyline so many times in the comics with a new goblin everytime they want to lean in the "whodunit" aspect again. Most of later goblin actually have better design than the original yet they feel redundant appart from Harry.
My personal favorite Spider-Man villain has got to be carnage. I'm just a big fan of one dimensional pure evil villains and carnage fits that bill perfectly. I mean, the man threw a baby out of a window as a distraction. Allow me to repeat myself, HE. THREW. A. BABY. OUT. OF. A. WINDOW. AS. A. DISTRACTION!
Green Goblin is easily the best Spider-Man villain. Take Joker's crazy, Reverse-Flash's pettiness and Lex Luthor's money and combine into one. It's just entertaining to what all the crazy shit Green Goblin comes up with to make Pete's life worse. Plus, if a writer gets stuck in the writer's block or don't know how to finish a storyline (see Clone Saga). It's easy to just say Norman did. He hooked up with Harry's girlfriend and in a "What If" story unintentionally unalived himself by erasing his abusive father from history. Jackal is also a great villain, albeit a very confusing one.
The Gwen stuff was all retcon it was Mysterio messing with his mind, honestly now I think about they kinda did the same stuff with Paul and Mj yeah Paul it’s him he’s Spider Man Nemesis
Venom has always been my favorite villain for one simple reason, some muggers could be robbing a lady for her purse and he'd show up to help her, but god forbid if spider-man swung by he'd fucking drop that lady from a building top to get spider-man 😂
Depsite being Spidermans nemesis… Goblin has rarely appeared as a major villain in any of the video games until recently with the 3rd insomniac game. It’s for this reason that I think venom is mistaken by the general audience for being his nemesis
green goblin = joker for spiderman Venom = somewhat like Bane for spiderman resembles Dark knight batman bane trained in shadow stuff that batman was trained in.
something that wasn't mentioned was the start of/reason for back in black where kingpin gets may shot (granted on accident) which has peter wear the black suit again to just beat the crap outta him
The top tier clearly only contains the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Venom…. I think Marvel editorial wants it to be Green Goblin… but it probably depends on what era they grew up in… 60’s probably thinks Green Goblin, 70’s probably thinks Doc Ock, the 80’s is actually maybe Hobgoblin? 90’s is Venom… 2000-present is probably Green Goblin (except for Doc Ock’s Superior run) unless you count Joe Quesada and Marvel editorial
Doctor Octopus IS Spider-Man's greatest villain, while Green Goblin IS Peter Parker's arch nemesis. Come to think of it, Doc Ock has always been about besting Spidey, and being more superior than him. While Goblin has always been about trying to destroy Peter, and making his life a living hell, his one and only mission/obsession in life.
Regarding Venom. Venom is Spider-Man's darker reflection. He is more about challenging Spider-Man's worldview and demonstrating Spidey's darkest desires.
Also GG knew it was Doc Ock in Peter’s body just from how he was behaving and the tech he was using. And when Spider-Man got his body back, Norman recognized it within one quip. “It’s you.”
Otto Octavius since: 1) he is a real threat: In Amazing Spider-Man comic before Ock's first appearance Spidey beat regular criminals and wondered if he will ever face worthy opponent and ock appeared. 2) he smashed Aunt May 3) he STOLE PETER'S LIFE AND BODY AND MADE HIM A MILLIONAIRE.
Doc Ock in PS4 Spider-Man was one of my favorite depictions of the character. I just felt such a wave of emotions after the whole game and defeating him. I made the point that he might arguably be a different case with him being a videogame character. Still, I think the progression of his subtle transformation was very eerie to sit through, and he really helped to highlight just how much of a force Spidey's villains are, especially in a collective.
Its 100% Green Goblin BUT him, venom and doc ock all work as main antagonists to a spiderman saga. If you want to have Peter Parker tested, use Goblin. If you want to have spiderman tested, use Doc Ock. If you want to have morality tested, use Venom. All three attack a different aspect of the character which is why they all work so well.
Maybe not his apex enemy, but my favorite is Kraven. As a kid, DeMatteis and Zeck really sucked me into the character and he has been a favorite ever since. In my book, a close second is early Venom (Michelinie/McFarlane - Larsen). That version of the character is just downright dark and scary. I absolutely agree that the Superior Spider-Man storyline propels Doc Ock to the top of the list. I remember during that two year run, so many people were pissed off. Fans at the LCS all talking about how they ruined SpiderMan. It was so weird but this story, and how it played out, truly affected people (and not just the fans). There were articles in the newspapers about it. Looking back now, this was a very compelling story by Dan Slott (only thing he has done that I really like) and an excellent use of Doc Ock’s character, which cements him at the top of the food chain, regarding spider foes.
A way to make Cletus more interesting is that he can see killing people as a way to save them from the pain and evils of life which in turn could reflect Peter near obsession of saving every life including his enemies. Carnage will view life as a plague, death as the cure and himself as the doctor.
@@edwind8071villains dont needa be super deep for them to be great, whats so great about the joker, hes the most basic villain yet people swear hes the greatest, and why is that? its not cuz of his character its cuz of his moments and impact he has on batman, carnage is the same just for venom and spider-man
I keep hearing people say how much they hate Venom and Carnage. Maybe they aren’t ultra deep but Spider-Man needs killers. Otherwise he’d face no one but crooks and mad scientists. He’d be stuck in 1960s style stories.
When Peter was dying in Ottos body he relives some stuff otto went through including a memory of Aunt May saying nobody will know as she goes in to assumingly fool around and it cuts to outside of the cell with him screaming
Ok but Kraven ate a room full of spiders, captured Peter, fucking buried him alive, and then impersonated him. Actually crazy and I didn’t even get into the details.
That Batman comparison at the beginning was crazy lmao, Batman has had plenty of insane stuff done to him by Bane, scarecrow, the league of shadows and the court of owls bruh what
I always thought Venom was the best IMO. He has all of Spidey's abilities AND more, he's bigger, he's stronger, he knows everything about Spider-Man and Peter Parker due to the Symbiote relaying what it learned when it was on him to Eddie, he's immune to Spider-Man's spider-sense and unlike Green Goblin who will JUST kill or hurt Spider-Man's loved ones, Venom will actually threaten to and make the dread that much more scary. Not to mention, the unpredictability of the symbiote and it's species is to be taken into account. Venom is essentially dark and devil Spider-Man and that makes him the perfect foil/arch-enemy IMHO.
Venom, but specifically the TAS Venom. He was amusing to watch in his interactions with Spider-Man. Also they had built up Eddie Brock’s hatred of spidey before being bonded with the symbiote. He took a sick twisted glee in his fight with Spider-Man. A enjoyable villain to watch.
Norman just fits thematically with Peter's story and character in a way that the other villains just don't. Norman is kind of like the cool dad figure that share's Peter's interests and could be a guide for Peter but of course, he's evil. If Peter decided to follow his guide he'd be taken down the wrong path.
Kind of funny that all of the characters discussed in the video are basically fighting for the title of big bad in the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. Well, they couldn't use Kingpin because of rights issues, so they took Tombstone and pretty much made him Kingpin in all but name.
It's Goblin and it ain't even close. Heck even the insomniac games make this very clear making Norman essentially responsible and the cause of almost every major story event that happens in Peter and Miles lives from Otto Octavius, Martin Li, Harry Osborn even Aunt May and Jefferson Davis deaths
When Spider-Man and Batman teamed up in one of the DC/Marvel crossovers, it was Carnage that teamed up with Joker, wasn't it? So that's my vote. It's an unusual pick because there's nothing particularly personal between them, but if the writers of the crossover thought Carnage was a good match for Joker while Batman and Spider-Man were teamed up, they must've had some reason to not choose the Goblin.
My personal favorite has always been Kraven. His design and motive is simple yet cool. And one last hunt is an all time great comic story, maybe the best Spider-Man story

It's between Kingpin and Tombstone for my favorite.

I agree. Lizard is top 4 without a doubt.
You mean Quilt-Man?
😂
It’s a shame how they wasted not only one, but two shockers in the MCU.
The MCU got away with it just but he wouldn't have enough main event status in that form to be a major player.
Shame though as I'd love to
hear Spidey tell him he can't escape him.
I'm happy to see other people liking Shocker!
Venom, Green Goblin and Ock are definitely all up there together tho Venom is definitely most loved as how much media he has been in.
Bane is Batmans biggest physical and intellectual rival and yet Joker surpasses him
Doc is his greatest villain
@@TheBombasticFatRat Have you considered that this is a different universe and those are different characters than the ones we're talking about?
Doc is Spidey's greatest villain, & Norman is Peter's
@@Fanimati0n I agree, but at the same time Octavius also makes sense for Peter as well. He’s essentially what would happen if Peter decided to abuse his gifts for his own ego. But I entirely agree with what you’re saying.
“For me it’s Ock, too” 20:29 say that again?
Short answer:
Venom: Arch Rival (Similar to Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy)
Dr Octopus: Arch Nemesis (Peter's opposite in a scientific genius with powers also based on an animal with 8 appendages)
Green Goblin: Arch Enemy (Norman Osborn is the greatest enemy to Peter Parker and has caused more personal trauma to him than any other villain. Their battles are always personal.)
Also, I'm going to add this: Green Goblin was the first villain to discover Spider-Man's secret identity. That was long before Gwen's death and I personally think that should count as the first thing he has done to Peter.
Really great points🔥🫡
Venom is Peter’s shonnen rival.
Tell me he doesn’t hit that character arc beat for beat.
This part killed me. 0:58 the writing really has become more scary than the villains.
I still think of the Lego superheroes Venom transformation animation almost everyday. Just him freaking out and ripping himself in half just for a massive version to emerge is so awesome.
Kingpin is like the only villain that Spiderman has decided he's completely willing to kill if presented the opporitunity.
My favorite spiderman villains are venom, kraven, and shocker

I think my favourite villain is doc oc, mainly because of the 2018 game. That final dialogue of Peter and doc oc is just. Chef’s kiss.

Depsite being Spidermans nemesis… Goblin has rarely appeared as a major villain in any of the video games until recently with the 3rd insomniac game. It’s for this reason that I think venom is mistaken by the general audience for being his nemesis
I’ve always thought Green Goblin was his arch nemesis, but all of the stuff you said about Doc Oc I think makes him a great contender
green goblin = joker for spiderman
Venom = somewhat like Bane for spiderman resembles Dark knight batman bane trained in shadow stuff that batman was trained in.
something that wasn't mentioned was the start of/reason for back in black where kingpin gets may shot (granted on accident) which has peter wear the black suit again to just beat the crap outta him
The top tier clearly only contains the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Venom….
GREAT discussion. Love it. And the game/video footage for the visuals is really effective!!
“It’s you.”
Otto Octavius since:
1) he is a real threat: In Amazing Spider-Man comic before Ock's first appearance Spidey beat regular criminals and wondered if he will ever face worthy opponent and ock appeared.
2) he smashed Aunt May
3) he STOLE PETER'S LIFE AND BODY AND MADE HIM A MILLIONAIRE.
His greatest villain is the Marvel writers. They are the worst.
Just found you guys, y'all are really entertaining. I like the bit of comedy style you throw in
You rock👊🔥 thanks for watching!
Carnage is up there for me
.....why? Like really?
i think carnage is a little one dimensional to be one of his greats.
I think we all love carnage ! but he is really just doesn’t have much to him in terms of character
A way to make Cletus more interesting is that he can see killing people as a way to save them from the pain and evils of life which in turn could reflect Peter near obsession of saving every life including his enemies. Carnage will view life as a plague, death as the cure and himself as the doctor.
@@edwind8071villains dont needa be super deep for them to be great, whats so great about the joker, hes the most basic villain yet people swear hes the greatest, and why is that? its not cuz of his character its cuz of his moments and impact he has on batman, carnage is the same just for venom and spider-man
i very like Electro and Sandman just because of their powers. damn, so cool enemies to fight and see their fights with Spidey
Dude, it has to be Shocker. No way it ain't Shocker
Venom challenges Spider-Man mentally, Doc-Ock challenges Spider-Man physically, and Green Goblin challenges Peter in every single way.
I keep hearing people say how much they hate Venom and Carnage. Maybe they aren’t ultra deep but Spider-Man needs killers. Otherwise he’d face no one but crooks and mad scientists. He’d be stuck in 1960s style stories.

Bad writers.
Mac Gargan's journey from Scorpion to Venom should be studied...my favorite is Hob Goblin. Roderick Kingsley being the eventual HG is understated
The Vulture deserves a honorable mention too, as well as Mysterio and Kraven.
Three AMAZING villains🔥🕷️
Ok but Kraven ate a room full of spiders, captured Peter, fucking buried him alive, and then impersonated him. Actually crazy and I didn’t even get into the details.
I love electro such a good villain. Not too powerful but enough that spider has a fun time with him and his powers are cool
Keep up the great work!
Kraven is my favorite. The panel where he is eating spiders, burying him, Kraven will always be my favorite.
There should be categories to this, like Spider-Man's biggest physical threat, biggest intellectual/psychological opponent, and overall biggest enemy.
Venom is essentially dark and devil Spider-Man and that makes him the perfect foil/arch-enemy IMHO.
venom is literally a good guy superhero now not even an anti hero anymore. him and spidey are good friends and allies now

I would love to see more of these with different heroes

My personal favorite has always been Kraven. His design and motive is simple yet cool. And one last hunt is an all time great comic story, maybe the best Spider-Man story
