I know I haven't been uploading to this channel for awhile (became too much work for me and was making my gaming less fun) but I have still been gaming! My latest interest has been shmups / STGs. While watching through the excellent "Pandemonium Reviews the Sega Saturn" series, I saw a video showcasing this game and instantly wanted to figure it out because it was just so weird and I loved all the music references.
Needless to say, after a decent amount of practice I was finally able to 1cc this game and here's the (uncommentated) proof! (Yes, I used autofire because I didn't want to risk injuring myself.)
My main goal in this game was just 1cc as opposed to going for higher scores. I planned to move on to another game after this run because I've barely scratched the surface of shmups (this is basically my first one) and want to see what's out there.
Plus, now that I've understood more how this game works, there are some things in this game I'm not particularly a fan of compared to other SHMUPs I've seen. I can't say for sure whether it's a skill issue, but I feel the random elements on some parts of the game can really screw you over (like random shot deviation on aimed shots). It also makes practice harder because save stating means some of the randomness gets fixed and will differ on your actual run. I also don't like how the bullets go behind the ship sprite as it makes it harder to learn the hitbox.
About the Game
So for the unfamiliar, this game (like many arcade games of the era) features a dynamic difficulty system which people call "rank". The game gets harder or easier depending on the situation. As part of this run, I was really curious to learn how this works but it was hard to find this information. After some luck I was able to find the info I needed and I've posted a writeup on this over on the shmups.system11 forums: shmups.system1... . If you're curious, you can even see a Lua script I wrote that outputs the rank information on the screen.
I've been calling this route "the coward's route" because it seeks to abuse the rank system in this game in order to keep the rank as low as possible (after acquiring all the powerups). Score becomes completely an afterthought and it focuses on survival (which is all I can muster with my current shmup skills).
The rank is minimized by intentionally failing to complete any of the stage missions, choosing "automatic" mode, and dying when possible (there's a glitch where you can die at the end of a stage and it doesn't count).
There were several unintentional deaths of course, but those also help to drop the rank on the last stage.
